I was disappointed by The New Husband. Drawn in by the enticing cover and intriguing description of the story, I was expecting much more than I got. The plot was bogged down by clunky writing to the point of being cringe inducing at times. The main character, Nina, was supposed to be a smart woman, yet she did the dumbest things. For me, this was a slow read and not a fun one. There are better books out there.
I received an ARC of this book for my honest review. This is the first book I've read by this author, it definitely won't be the last. At first it seemed a little slow starting. I was unsure why this book was noted to be a chilling, twisty thriller. I put it down for awhile as it didn't grab my attention. I'm so glad I picked it back up as right around chapter 24, there's a twist that will blow your mind and keep you wanting more. At times I wanted to reach in and shake some sense into one of the characters! It was like open your eyes lady, this is not normal. Anyone that has ever been in a situation of being controlled and or abused can definitely relate to the epilogue at the end of the story. What started out a little slow turned into a 5 STAR read for me!
I don't think that I can stress it enough- I LOVE Lifetime movies and books that are Lifetime movies in novel form. They won't always be the greatest books ever, but just like laying on the couch watching tv all afternoon, I devoured this book in an evening.
Nina's husband Glen disappeared in a fishing incident. He could have died, but there's also the possibility that he had a secret life and skipped out on his family. Devastated Nina moves on with her life and meets charming middle school teacher Simon again by chance. They fall in love and move in together. Nina's 15 year old son, Connor, adjusts to the new man in their life and the new home, but her 13 year old, Maggie, is not accepting any of it.
As a matter of fact, she's quite sure that he's not the person that her mom and brother think he is. With the help of her new friend, Ben, she sets out to prove it and also prove her dad didn't leave them. But is she really right or is she just a confused preteen?
Yes, it was predictable, but it was also well written. I liked the way the chapters shuffled between characters so we got different perspectives. It was fun. Not everything has to be serious literature to be enjoyed. Some people like erotica, I like schlock
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my review.
I think I’m finally catching on to the logic of authors that create a clueless, trusting female lead character like Nina Garrity. I want to scream at her to wake up and smell the roses, but all along I’m greedily eating up this book to see if she ever learns her lesson. Nina endured an entire two months (!) of single motherhood after her husband curiously disappeared. She quickly (and knocked-kneed weakly) falls for Simon Fitch, a science teacher from school. Her kids, Connor and Maggie, have polar opposite reactions to mom’s break-neck speed of moving them in with a new man: Connor is enthralled with Simon but Maggie knows something isn’t quite right with Mr. Perfect.
I’m so aggravated at Nina’s weaknesses as a mother and a woman that I don’t even realize how much I love this book until I get to the final few pages when I sit back and say, “Whew! What a serendipitous ending!”
(I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review. Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for making it available.)
Wow, what did I just read? What happens when your husband disappears and you find out he’s been having an affair, along with other bad news about him? You fall in love with someone who seems too good to be true. Even if things feel a little “off” to you, you stay with him because he’s a great cook, and has money.
This book, with its intensifying, suspenseful pace, was just what I need after a string of contemporary romances that I’ve been reading. This was just the thing to balance out my reading, lol!
I received The New Husband by D.J. Palmer for free through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Do not start this book before bed or if you have other things that you need to get done-- as it is hard to put down once you get started! It keeps you engaged until the very end. I really enjoyed it.
Holy snikey! What a great book and easy to read.
Almost two years Nina Garrity's husband Glen disappeared. They aren't sure if he was the victim of foul play but most signs are pointing to him faking his own death etc. However, it seems to be for the best for Nina and her two kids; 8th grader Maggie and High schooler Conner. The family has moved on and Nina is starting a new life with Simon Fitch, a history teacher at her daughters middle school.
So right off the bat, Simon irked me. It could be the name, historically names like Simon, Neil etc have been the "evil" ones in books I read as a kid. (Thanks Christopher Pike! :) ). He seemed to perfect but also at times too wishy washy and almost played the victim too much. Of course him and Maggie aren't going to get along. I don't want to give too much away because this is a thriller, but there were soo many alarm bells going off about him! He is bat shit crazy! 100% crazy and of course, you know there is going to be something wrong with him, only I wasn't expecting what it was! While the book is some what predicable on some levels, there was a twist I never saw coming and I actually had a full fledge "WTF" moment on the train where I gasped out loud. That's how you know a twist is good!
This was a fast and fun read by D.J Palmer and I can't wait for its official release! Thank you so very much to NetGalley and St. Martin's press for the ARC.
This was a twisted ride all the way to the very end! Wow very good I couldn’t put it down I finished this in 3 days! The characters were all very well written and believable.. thank you for letting me read an advanced copy for my review.
5 stars! Glen disappears leaving his wife and two children behind. He had some secrets... He lost his job. He had a rendezvous with a waitress— Nina had the photos to prove it. Nina now has a new man in her life, Simon. He’s a teacher at the school her kids attend. He wants to take care of them and be a real family. However, Maggie, Nina’s daughter, knows something is off with Simon. Maggie is the real MVP of this story. Perfect pacing and enough of a draw to keep me up until 1:15am to finish. Also, an accurate depiction of how abusive relationships begin. 5 stars without a doubt. Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The New Husband has the same similar cheesy B movie type tone that I found and loved in Mr Palmer's Saving Meghan. It worked it that book and works here too. While I HATED HATED HATED (you get where I am going with this) both Meghan and her mother Becky in that book, I felt the opposite about Nina in this one. Although the pacing was a bit off for me I still really enjoyed The New Husband. Plenty of creep factor here with a nice side lesson concerning lies that were tell/are told.
Thank you St. Martin's Press for the advanced readers copy! I loved Saving Meghan by D.J. Palmer so I was so excited to recieve an early copy of The New Husband! This was a great thriller that kept me guessing. Loved every part of this book!
I liked this book...but I didn't love it.There were so many twists and turns that you kept reading just to see what the next page has to give. However, a lot of this book was so predictable that you didn't need to read too much to understand who the character is and of what he is capable. I don't know if I thought this book had a happy ending though. How about if you tell me what you think??
Classic tale of things aren’t always what they seem. This was a very engaging story from the start. The author did a fabulous job of making me adore Simon. The way the story unfolded and true motives and feelings were uncovered was fantastic. I was expecting a little more wow from the ending, but overall I really enjoyed this story. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from this author.
This psychological thriller starts off low key. Nina’s first husband went missing while fishing one Saturday morning. Almost two years later, his body has never been found. But after his disappearance, she discovers he had a secret. Well, more than one.
Now, she’s involved with Simon, who on the surface seems perfect. Maybe a little too perfect? Maggie, her 13 year old daughter, sees a different side to Simon.
We hear from both Nina and Maggie, among others. I got a kick out of Maggie’s chapters. Palmer nails the snarky side of a teenager, combined with a lack of confidence. Palmer is also smart to use first person narrative for Maggie, but third person for the others .
This book was just ok - unbelievable, even tacky at times. I plowed through it mostly to find out the why behind Simon’s actions. I keep saying I’m going to stay away from psychological thrillers because lately they’ve been such a disappointment for me. This one included.
If there’s a moral to this story, it’s for women not to rely on men.
My thanks to netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance copy of this book.
Nina’s husband is assumed to have drowned in a boating accident. After his death, Nina learns that Glen has been leading a double life with another woman. Glen isn’t there for her to confront, so Nina has to get on with her life. Simon, a teacher at her children’s school, comes into their private lives by chance. He and Nina soon develop a relationship and decide to move in together. Her son is happy with the plan. He and Simon do “guy” things together. Her daughter, Maggie, is not happy at all. Maggie senses an evil undercurrent in Simon.
Simon’s first wife died tragically. He doesn’t like to talk about it too much. It upsets him. But he is quick to use his emotions to control Nina. He distances Nina from her close friends and even from her children. The ending has a twist that I didn’t see coming.
The book is great. It was a book I had trouble putting down.
Mysterious and keeps you thinking. It’s hard to know someone fully and you learn more the longer you are with them. This one was dark.
Incredible, The New Husband by DJ. Palmer's psychological thriller has it all!. I could not put it down, finished in one afternoon. A story that revolves around a mother and her two teenage children, her missing husband and the new boyfriend who move into a new house. I held my breath at times with a racing pulse. There were times when I could feel my skin prickle and the end is quite an amazing tear jerker. Thank you #NetGalley #StMartinsPress #TheNewHusband
An early morning fisherman discovers an abandoned boat adrift with only a barking dog onboard and blood all over the deck. What happened to the missing owner? Hours later, police knock on Nina Garrity's door to return her dog and inform her that her husband Glen is missing. An intense search is conducted, but a body is never found. Glen Garrity disappeared without a trace. Two years later, Nina has moved on with Simon, presuming her husband is dead or more likely - given the shocking revelations she uncovered after he went missing - he's living a secret life. Nina's confidence is badly shaken after uncovering her husband's lies and indiscretions, but the new man in her life, home, and bed constantly reassures her that she's almost perfect. Nina's children, Connor and Maggie, have different opinions of their soon-to-be stepfather with Connor embracing him while Maggie suspects him of being a monster in disguise. She is convinced her dad is alive and will return to their family so she seizes every opportunity to antagonize and investigate Simon producing a never-ending explosive atmosphere in their home. Simon is pressing Nina to set a wedding date, but before she fully commits to him she needs to be sure he's what he appears to be . . . the perfect man. She can't afford to let a man make a fool of her again.
The New Husband is a menacing, atmospheric psychological thriller that radiates creepy vibes. The story is told through Nina and Maggie's point of view for the most part until later when another point of view is revealed. This is an extremely hard story to talk about without divulging spoilers which would be a shame as the plot depends heavily on readers experiencing this story as it unfolds. The author sets a sinister tone in the first few pages - a sense of impending doom that multiplies as suspicions and doubts ferment. It's left up to the reader to work through the manipulation and deceit to figure out who's telling the truth and who's lying. After the lightening intro to the story, the pace slows down a bit only to increase again in the second half as the story takes an unexpected turn, and readers discover a big, missing piece of the mystery. One might expect having this information would lessen the intensity of the rest of the story, but instead it escalates everything as the stakes are raised and the sense of urgency and imminent danger become frantic.
The New Husband is a story of obsession, deceit, suspicion and lies. It's a story of recognition, acceptance and acknowledgement that the lies we tell ourselves - the ones we choose to believe - are the biggest threat to us and our loved ones. While the story stretches the boundaries of believability a time or two, I think fans of mystery, suspense, and psychological thrillers will love this book! Highly recommended!
I felt this book was very slow and took a while to get into it. I finally found a grove and was able to stay with it. However, I felt the characters were flat, and the ending was very rushed. It was very much like reading a lifetime movie! I would recommend to those who like “light” thrillers. Thank

The best way I can describe The New Husband is that it resembles one of those 1990s thriller movies where everything is so linear and over the top from start to end. You know who is who, you know who is the story's psycho and you how it will end. You might enjoy it or you might not! All that is very much applicable to this story too.
After reading many thrillers, one would expect a lot from a book he will choose. My expectation of this book was not much from the beginning. I knew this was one of the domestic thrillers but to be honest I found myself rolling my eyes a lot as the story progressed because there were things that became so strangely unbelievable. Not that those things could never happen in real life but I feel the author did not present them in a way to convince me about them.
This is not one of those thrillers that have twists or turns. So when you get into it expect none. Everything was linear from the start. There is a gradual reveal of the state of the new husband but nothing comes as puzzling or shocking. I mean once you get the complete picture of the man's personality halfway through the book then the story flattens and you will just want to get over with it as quickly as possible.
The New Husband is not too bad, but again I don't consider it an enjoyable thriller. It is just OK as a book, as a thriller I can't say the same. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this ARC in return for this honest unbiased review.
The book is expected to be released on April 14th, 2020
