This one was a slow start but ended up being so good! The author did an excellent job showing all the emotions in this novel. I highly recommend this one! I can’t wait read others from this author.
The New Husband by author D.J. Palmer was a little slow getting into in the beginning but that was so the author could set the stage for what was to come. The more I read, the more I got into it and in parts I felt like I was sitting on the edge of my seat holding my breath! The author did a great job with character development. Simon is all kinds of crazy! Even though I was able to figure out exactly how the story was going to play out, with no real surprises, it still completely held my interest and is a book I would definitely recommend. I feel really bad for people out there that actually live these types of experiences but realize that they are very real and do happen. I’d like to thank author D.J. Palmer, St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for both the e-arc and the physical arc to read, review and share. I’m really looking forward to reading more by this author in the future.
OMG! I loved this book. It reminded me of a Lifetime movie where the viewer already knows that the new husband is sinister but you watch the story unfold and judge the main character for not figuring it out. There are many suspense moments in this book that I loved. It was hard to put down. Thanks to the publisher for the advance review copy.
Nina's husband goes missing under very questionable circumstances. She finds a friend and then boyfriend in Simon, a teacher at her daughter's school. Nina's son is ok with Simon but her daughter absolutely hates Simon and doesn't trust him. When Nina and Simon move in together, things go from bad to worse for Maggie. Maggie still feels her dad is alive and doesn't want them to give up on him. As strange things start happening, it is quite a wild ride! The secrets, twists, and turns make this a book you can't put down! Who is lying and who is telling the truth? That is what you have to figure out. I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
Wowee... This took my sleep and a full day away. I could not stop reading this.
Beware of those men who make you doubt yourself and what you thought. This is a wild ride and block out time to do it justice.
Thank you to Net galley for an advanced copy of the New Husband.
Does he make you question things?
Nina a recently single mom to Cameron and Maggie is trying to hold everything together after her husband Glen is presumed drowned while fishing.....they found his boat with a whole lot of blood and they think he may have fallen into the water......Nina meets Simon a teacher at her kids school and Simon who just so happen to makes her favorite dish, Simon who seems to find excuses to keep Nina from her friends, Simon who talks Nina into changing her hair and Simon who gets into nasty fights with Maggie and she almost dies without her epipen (who is not buying Simon's perfect facade) And the therapist......I can't believe Nina would be so stupid and thank God for the dog Daisy who for a heart breaking chapter or two was missing. Simon was not a character that I cared about, he was creepy from the beginning, like reading woman's magazines that Nina wasn't sure she bought. This book was suspenseful and at times, I didn't want it to end, other times I wanted to shake some sense into Nina.
Well...this was a bit unexpected. I was chugging along thinking that this book would end a certain way and then BAM! That was a surprise twist. As I was reading, my hatred of NIna kept growing. Like, girl...come on now. Don't you see that all isn't right here? I absolutely loved Maggie, her teenage daughter who from the get go paid attention to her intuition that something wasn't on the up and up. Even the dang dog wasn't with it. Overall, this was a quick, fun and suspenseful read. I recommend for vacation or a commute.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC.
A great thriller page turner! I loved how well Simon's character was developed throughout the story. It was easy to see how he so expertly manipulated almost every one. Hard to put down. Highly recommend.
This was my first read by D.J. Palmer and I can see why people rave about him! Although a slow start, this book lived up to its hype with suspense and drama. It's a fairly lengthy book but with the amount of details and character development it matches. This will not be my last book by this author!
It's been a long time since I read a thriller that is so obvious, so transparent, throughout the entire story. The "villain" is telegraphed from the start, blatantly apparent. The gaslighting of the main character is incredibly heavy handed. It's frustrating to read a character who seems perfectly smart and competent but then ignores all her common sense. The saving grace for this book was the partial narrative from the daughter's point of view. The middle school girl was the best character. The one little twist may have come as a surprise to readers new to this genre, but if you've ever read a thriller or two, it was all too predictable.
Another edge of your seat thriller by D.J. Palmer. Fast paced plot, great characters and unexpected twists made this a page turner that I kept reading late into the night. Highly recommended
Wow, what a great read, the more I read the harder it got to put down, it kept me at the edge of my seat...... Simon is one crazy guy, so many twists and turns , you just keep hoping for things to not be what they seem and for everything to be ok.......will definitely read more by this author
So WOW. The story captured my attention from the first sentence and kept until the last word. I actually kept trying to flip to the next page, realizing it was over so then went back and reread the last chapter. The characters were well written, well developed (except maybe for Connor, I would have like more from his perspective);, the twist, well that was something! Don’t want to give away any spoilers. Looking forward to more from this author.
The New Husband by D.J. Palmer is a domestic novel as well as a mystery of sorts. It starts slowly but by the denouement it is filled with violence, murder and torture. I must admit the end was hard to take. A woman's husband disappears while fishing off his boat. Blood is found and he is presumed to be dead. The woman takes up with a new man who is a teacher in the local high school. He eventually moves in with her and her two children, a daughter who can't stand him and a son who gets along with him. I found him a little too solicitous to his companion which made me suspicious which was warranted. I will leave it to you to find out what happens. I enjoyed the book but didn't find it compelling.
Oh HECK YES!! 🙌🏼 The New Husband was so deliciously dark and twisted. A domestic thriller that leaves the reader frantically turning pages. This is a slow unraveling with little tidbits to keep the reader in the loop while the characters are caught unaware. The truth was so shocking and disturbing, I gasped. IT’S SO GOOD! I devoured this book in a day and enjoyed every minute. I enjoyed the authors first book, Saving Meghan, but this sealed the deal and now this is a must read author for me. The New Husband was fabulously written and executed, a full 5 ⭐️ for me. My enormous gratitude to @stmartinspress for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for the chance to read and review this book. When Nina's husband, Glen disappears she thinks he is either dead or disappeared because he wanted to escape his family. Along comes Simon to fill his place, but does Nina really know anything about Simon? Things are just not what they seem. I liked this story, but thought it was a bit predictable. Also, how could Nina have been so blind? Recommend if you like a good thriller!
I enjoyed this book immensely! It was intriguing throughout and about halfway you started to get the answers you were looking for. Simon was crafted to be the charming abuser and Nina was the mourning wife looking for answers about her missing husband and uncovering his dark secrets. They met at a vulnerable time and it was the perfect storm for Nina to fall into Simon's trap. I was as drawn into this book as I was Saving Meghan.
I wish the chapters had labeled perspectives. The chapters switch between narratives and it would have been helpful to have them labeled by character name so you could follow along quicker. You could figure out who was talking in the first few lines of each chapter but having them already labeled would have been beneficial even though it could have given some of the plot away.
Suspense, mystery, and a whole lot of creepy makes for a great read!
Nina's husband, Glen, goes missing suddenly, but while the town is searching for Glen, Nina discovers his hidden affair. Did he run off with this mysterious woman? As she digs deeper Nina uncovers more truths about Glen that she never knew. Desperate to help her family survive the circumstances they find themselves in, here comes Simon, the teacher from her children's school, rescuing her and the kids both emotionally and financially, or at least that's how he wants it to seem. Nina's daughter, Maggie, has reservations about Simon from the start, and sees a dark side of him no one wants to believe exists. What happens will leave every reader asking, how well do I really know the people in my life?
Great story, plot is well developed at a nice steady pace. Loved Maggie and Ben!
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Top notch!! I loved every minute of this book!! Oh Simon!!!! This is definitely a 5 star story for sure!!
Up all night once again, couldn't put this one down. Great read. So many times I wanted to scream at Nina to OPEN HER EYES. I hope to see more from this author soon.
