Wow, definitely a thriller, a massive page turner! Warning it is very dark, The storyline is substantial and believable and you do get really great looks at a very disturbing personality. Everything is laid out and each incident shows faceted sides. I’m glad that I read it but don’t know if I want to use the term enjoyed because it was so dark and disturbing but it was very well done. There did not appear to be any unexplained lapses in the story and everything tied up as beat as shoelaces!
From the author of Saving Meghan comes the new domestic suspense tale.
Nina's husband disappeared 18 months ago. Is he dead or did he run off with a woman? No one really knows. She and their two children are not adjusting well when Simon, a middle school teacher enters their lives.
13-year-old Maggie hates Simon while Nina is letting him control her life.
I'm stopping right here. The 13-year-old and I figured out in Chapter One that this was another sociopathic person and a grown woman who is a social worker but couldn't see what was right in front of her until her daughter almost dies.
Unfortunately, it was pretty much the standard template of domestic suspense without the suspense.

This twisted psychological thriller was very slow and entirely two long that I felt ruined the enjoyment of a really good premise. Glen goes missing from his fishing boat on a lake leaving only blood and the family dog Daisy. Nina is notified by the police that her husband is missing and a search brings no body and no closure. Her two kids Connor and Maggy are heartbroken and Nina is also. This story basically begs the question of how much do you ever know about your husband.
After Glen is declared missing and presumably dead Simon Fitch ingratiates himself into Nina and her two children's life by returning Daisy who Simon really set the whole missing and returning of the family pet himself. Simon is a diabolical sociopath and psychopath. He rushes Nina to move in with him and it is the middle school aged Maggy that first spots the dark sides of Simon by his rage. Maggy just won't accept Simon and Nina being a social worker doesn't feel comfortable leaving Simon and Maggy home alone together. Simon has proposed marriage to Nina but she doesn't accept because she feels it is too soon.
What really happened to Glen? Was he really having an affair with Teresa a waitress or was Glen set up? What happened to Glen's job in investment banking that he was so devoted too? Why is it every time Nina makes plans with her friend's for a girls night out Simon interferes? When Nina decides to go back to work why does Simon try to persuade her that it wouldn't be good for Maggy?
This had the potential to be a very chilling story which it was but it gets too bogged down from the very beginning with two much detail which makes it very slow. The length of this novel drags and it is ultimately too long. I did like the idea of Maggy being the youngest character who through the eyes of a child gets the first glimpse of who Simon truly is. At times there were elements of this story that were creepy and allegorical. I really wanted to like this more as I have won a good reads giveaway by this author which I am grateful for. But due to the fact that the writing of this one gets so bogged down as to take the fun out of this good premise I don't know what to expect from the book that I won. I also think that the reader has to suspend belief in the overall big picture of how this novel ends. I have to rate this as 2.5 stars rounded up.

This was a thrilling read. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end at times. I recommend this book if you enjoy a good thriller!
Glen has gone missing. It’s been almost two years but Nina has moved on and is moving her and the kids in with Simon. Maggie however, is not happy about the situation. Something is up with Simon and she is determined to find out what it is before her mom officially marries him into their family. Is Glen really dead? If not, where is he?
This book was great. Maggie was such a badass kid and I loved the friendship between her and Ben. I thought that was a really beautiful portrayal of being open to someone different than you and realizing how truly great they were. I also really enjoyed that Maggie didn’t back down even when she got pressure from all sides to accept Simon into their family. I did not see the twist coming at all, it definitely caught me off guard!
Loved it!!! It was creepy and scary. I was not expecting what actually happened to Glen. I believed one thing about him to find out I was completely wrong. There were so many red flags but Nina ignored every single one. Big, huge, red alarms were flashing and Nina kept her blinders on and continued to set up house with a man she hardly knew. The worst part was, she put her children in that situation. I felt horrible for Maggie. She was the only one who could see what was really going on. There were so many twists and turns. I kept questioning what was happening. Some people are just crazy scary!!!! All the planning and work that Simon put into getting what he wanted was insane. The book is full of so many lies and secrets and one very smart teenager with an unlikely friend who can see through it all.
Definitely recommend the book. It was a great thriller/suspense. I couldn't put it down because I needed to see how it would end. Look forward to reading more books by the author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from St. Martin's Press through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book has a good flow and a decent plot. Some of the writing was a bit hard to follow.. the flipping back and forth between voices of the characters did not work well. Overall though I found this to be a worthy entry into the genre of domestic thriller and I'd recommend it. (I already gave away my paper copy, and someone wants it after she's done with it so there's that.)
Ninas husband Glen has disappeared after going fishing one day. No remains have been found and everyone believes he either drowned or left her to be with another woman. A year and half later, Nina is moving on to a new man. Simon Fitch. She is struggling financially and Simon has promised to care for her and her children Connor and Maggie. But as they move in together, Maggie begins to question who Simon really is. Is he too good to be true? Or is she in denial about the mistakes her father made? And if so, what REALLY happened to her father? So many questions, secrets and paranoia that will have your head spinning! This is a cant put down kinda book!
Just an amazing psychological thriller that is filled with suspense!
Do not plan to stop reading this book until you have finished!
Nina needs to be sure her son and daughter will be taken care of now that she is a single parent.
Her husband Glen did the unthinkable. He has moved on with his life or is dead in the lake someplace. Nobody knows for sure.
Did Nina move too quick into a relationship with Simon Fitch to achieve family security? She is positive he loves her, isn't she?
Does she know anything about Simon or his family or his past?
He is providing love, security, housing and safety for them.
BUT..... things are not always what they seem to be!!
This cozy new family has many hair- raising secrets!
The only one who seems to realize that some thing is a -stray is Maggie, Nina's teenaged daughter who is sure beyond any doubt that her Dad would NEVER do what they all accuse him of!
Maggie will not believe any of this nonsense and is going to prove them all wrong!
She is truly my favorite character! This is an intense novel and definitely a true heart stopper!
I was captivated by The New Husband from the very first page. Nina's husband goes missing after a fishing accident. We follow Nina as she attempts to rebuild her life with her new boyfriend, Simon - a teacher at her daughter's middle school, and keep her son and daughter happy. Simon seems like the perfect boyfriend and partner. But beneath that perfectly crafted exterior, is Simon too good to be true? And what really happened to Nina's husband?
I flew through this book on the plane. It was a fast, engaging, and suspenseful read. I thought I knew where the story was going, but D.J. Palmer did a wonderful job of keeping me guessing and captivated. I don't want to give anything away, so I will keep this review is short and sweet!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Just because you love someone, doesn't mean you know them. Nina finds that out the hard way after discovering that her missing husband, Glen, had been leading a double life with another woman. Glen is gone and presumed drowned while fishing on his boat. A year and half later, she meets Simon and finds love again. Simon, also a widower, is still grieving the death of his first wife. Simon believes that he has found his dream girl in Nina. Nina's son has embraced Simon as a father figure. But soon Nina's friends begin to wonder if Simon is possessive rather than devoted. And Nina is committed to getting back into her career and move forward. But before she can move forward, she must first clear her conscience that she's not making another terrible choice in a man. While doing so, she uncovers a shocking truth.
WOW! This book was incredible! What a total thrill ride. It's dark and twisty - the quintessential phycological thriller. I will admit, it was slow moving through the first half, but it picked up and flew after that!
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for and eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
DJ Palmer is a terrific writer who keeps the reader turning pages.
The story begins with a small, unmanned boat floating on a lake, blood everywhere, and a bewildered dog alone onboard. Fast-forward to Nina, a single mother of two teenagers, moving into a new house with her new love, Simon. Nina’s husband, Glen, is missing and believed to have been on that boat. The story is told from different perspectives, and is easy to follow. Although a bit predictable, the book is definitely a page-turner. Recommend this book, and the author’s previous book, Saving Meghan.
This was a twisted creepy story. The character Nina wasn't really developed all that well and I just didn't care for her at all. Simon either, but Maggie made the story very readable. If this were a movie, she would be the star and the others supporting characters. And the son, Connor, he was not developed at all. It was more like he was in the background watching and unaware of what was going on. But I did like the book, and did not expect the twist in the second half happening so soon, although I did figure out what Simon had done.
Although there were some plot devices I didn’t care for (just a lot of “things” that seemed to move the story in an obvious specific direction) I thought this was a great thriller. Very fast paced! Excited to read more from this author.
This is a book you will not want to put down. I really enjoyed it! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy!
Oh my do I love a good book about a creepy husband! I don't know why honestly but they are always the best thrillers! So much suspense and creepiness and the characters were definitely fantastic in a creepy way. Bravo D.J. Palmer!
The New Husband is a pretty standard thriller of a novel that honestly reminded me of a Lifetime movie. Nina Garrity's husband disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and after his disappearance troubling facts came to light, which has led Nina to question her entire relationship with him. However, 18 months after this disappearance, she and her 2 children, are moving in with Simon Fitch, the perfect man. The older child, a teenage son, likes Simon but is a paper thin character.. The younger child, a tween, Maggie, loathes Simon and hates that her mother has moved on so quickly. It is particularly painful as Simon is a teacher at her middle school, so she cannot escape him. As a reader, I couldn't help but wonder also why Nina was so quick to move in, despite the fact that it's explained by financial problems. The character also has social worker training yet is blind to al the red flags in the relationship. However, if you are looking for a lightweight thriller, you could do worse. I liked Maggie and her determination to prove that Simon is the bad guy she believes him to be,. However, If you are hoping to discover a novel with lots of shocking twists and turns, this is not the book for you.
The New Husband tells the story of a master manipulator. Nina Garrity, reeling from the disappearance of her husband Glen, meets Simon Fitch, a teacher from her daughter's middle school. Still fragile (emotionally and financially), Nina falls in love with Simon and moves in with him. Nina's son embraces Simon, but her daughter Maggie sees Simon as evil. As their relationship progresses, Maggie becomes more suspicious of Simon and even Nina's closest friends question his motives. But who should Nina believe?
Told from alternating perspectives (primarily Nina and Maggie), The New Husband was a wild ride. D.J. Palmer does a fantastic job of developing each character and their actions. Specifically with Simon, I kept questioning whether he was doing things because he cared or because he was possessive. To sum it up, I could not put this book down! Huge fan of DJ Palmer and this book did not disappoint!
Nina Garrity’s life imploded when her husband went missing; the only evidence left is a fishing boat with blood. As no body was found, she and her family have no clue what happened wondering whether Glen Garrity just decided to run from his life or is truly gone. Nina finds her husband, Glen, was leading a double life; his machinations have left the family near destitute. Even before Glen’s disappearance their marriage had some serious problems. Having two teenagers in the mix adds to Nina’s strife at providing for them and herself.
While trying to put her life back together, Nina becomes involved with a teacher at her daughter, Maggie’s, school. Simon seems like the perfect man and very opposite to Glen. He is considerate and loving doing everything to make Nina’s life easier, but then, they move into together and perfection becomes paranoia especially for Maggie when strange things start happening to their family. Maggie believes Simon is at the root if she can only prove it. Nina goes back to work as a social worker which adds additional stress and strain giving fuel to Simon’s contention that this is bad for her and the children. He wants to be the only provider, but Nina has been there, done that before and it did not turn out well.
Nina has a lot personal angst for herself and family because of her situation and Simon knows just how to work it. This story is quite the psychological thriller. Though Simon seems like a truly genuine nice guy, looks may be very deceiving as his unsettling behavior underpins a complex and dark story that will please readers of this genre. This book gives readers a striking tale told through the first person POV of thirteen-year-old Maggie and third person of other characters.
This was so good! It took a me while to figure it all out, but I was super suspicious of the teacher who moved in on the grieving parent! I had no idea what was coming though..
Twists and turns kept me guessing almost to the end. I have already recommended it for when t comes out!
