Thank you to Net Galley for the opportunity to read a digital ARC of Dan Palmer’s latest novel - The New Husband coming out on April 14th...just in time to be a GREAT 2020 Summer vacation read!
The New Husband is an intriguing and fast paced novel that will keep you unable to resist turning to the next page. Each chapter ends with a cliff hanger that will keep you going on and on until there is no good chapter to find your stopping point. At times when I had to put the book down, all I could think about was when can I pick it up again?! I found it unpredictable with jaw dropping surprises at several points.
Just because you love someone doesn’t mean you know them.
Nina Garrity learned that the hard way after discovering that her missing husband, Glen, had been leading a double life with another woman. But Glen's gone―presumably drowned while fishing on his boat―so she can't confront him about the affair or any of his other misdeeds. A year and a half after the accident, Nina considers herself a widow, even though the police never found a body. Following a chance encounter with Simon Fitch, a teacher from her daughter Maggie's middle school, Nina finds love again and has hopes of putting her shattered life back together.
Simon, a widower still grieving the suicide of his first wife, has found his dream girl in Nina. His charm and affections help break through to a heart hardened by betrayal. Nina's teenage son, Connor, embraces Simon as the father he wishes his dad could have been, but Maggie sees a far darker side to this new man in their lives. Even Nina’s good friends wonder if Simon is supremely devoted―or dangerously possessive.
But Nina is committed, not only to her soon-to-be new husband but also to resuming her former career as a social worker. Before she can move forward, however, Nina must first clear her conscience that she's not making another terrible choice in a man. In doing so, she will uncover the shocking truth: the greatest danger to her, and her children, are the lies people tell themselves.
I received this ARC from Netgalley and was thrilled since I had already read Palmer's other book, Saving Meghan. A great writer and one who didnt disappoint me with this book.

I this is how the books starts. We all think the worst of Glen as his wife did, but somehow she carries on, even to find a new boyfriend. One her daughter has doubts about. Halfway through the book part of the truth comes out (no spoilers here) and we find out what really happened when Nina lost her husband.
Nina is also finding out her new husband-to-be isnt what he seems although her daughter has been trying to tell her. This book is a page turner and has you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the other shoe to drop. Put it on your TBR list when you is finally released in April 2020. You wont be disappointed. #Netgalley #fivestars
Thank you Net galley for the chance to preview this book!!
I do not read a lot of thriller books, but when I do I tend to really like them. This one started out a bit slow for me but that could have been due to a hectic life at the time. For the first half of the book I did not really feel any suspense or fear. It was just setting the stage for what was to come. Let me just say, the second half of this book had me holding my breath. I could picture this playing out before my eyes like a movie and I was frightened. There was suspense and pure shock of some of the things that were done. As in all good thriller type books, the bad guy is unsuspecting by authorities and other people, which makes it always so hard to trip them up and to get people to believe what he is capable of doing. I found myself yelling at the book, so I knew it was good. I was completely sucked into this drama and all the emotions came out. It also sent a really important message that many people need to read and be reminded of about abuse of many kinds, about being careful in relationships. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to be scared by things that go bump while reading.
Nina is trying to go on after her husband disappears under mysterious circumstances. She is as surprised as everyone when she lets Simon, a middle school teacher at her daughter's school, into her life. On the surface it is all good, he seems to adore her and wants to take care of her and her children. When they move in together things aren't as perfect and she begins to wonder if she made the right choice, but she never expects what happens next. What is the truth and what is a lie? Will her family survive?
Wow how twisted can a person get. This is what kept running through my mind while I was reading this book. Kudo's to the author for keeping the reader on edge of seat to the very end of the book.
Wow, just wow! This book caught me totally off guard. The twists and turns are amazing and the one to figure out what is going on first is the youngest person involved in the story and then the family dog helps point out what is going on and what has been happening. Well worth the time it takes to read this book!
Thank you to NetGalley for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Oof. Dang. I want to say I didn't see that coming, but I definitely saw that coming. But as Willy Wonka said, "The suspense is terrible...I hope it will last."
Some minor editing issues and a small issue with continuity, but a highly suggested domestic suspense. I look forward to more books by this author.
Side note, slight spoiler. I really want to see The Silence of the Lambs again now.
I love a great mystery to unravel. This pulled me in right away and kept me reading late into the night. I know really weird, unexplainable things can happen to people but this just seemed like a LOT of stuff was happening to this family. Sometimes I felt parts of the story were over explained to the point I wanted to skip ahead a little just to get past the over detailed parts. The ending came together but it was just a lot of stuff coming from different directions to take in during the last couple of chapters. I give it 3.5 stars.
Amazing!!!! This book pulls you in and keeps you guessing. Nina’s husband Glen goes missing and is assumed dead. Nina soon has a new man in her life, Simon. Not everyone gets along with Simon, including Nina’s daughter, Maggie. Maggie is determined to keep Simon from joining the family permanently.
I love how this book gives little hints about what is happening. It slowly unravels the story in the best way. I don’t want to give anything away but this book will keep you guessing and has more than a few amazing twists.

Nina’s world is turned upside down when they find her husband Glen’s boat abandoned with her wonderful golden retriever Daisy on board with blood on her paws and Glen no where to be found.
Flash forward two years, Glen is still missing. Nina is dating Simon, a history teacher in her daughter Maggie’s school, who Maggie isn’t a fan of, but her brother Connor adores. Nina is smitten and Simon seems perfect, until her relationship with her daughter and her friends become affected and more and more strange things start happening.
In the beginning, this book seemed a little slow for me, but then when it picked up, full speed ahead. It was creepy, disturbing, my spidey senses were on high alert, and I felt like I was watching a lifetime movie in my head.
I obviously am biased and LOVED that there was a golden retriever, who was perfect as can be throughout the book.
I loved how strong Maggie was dealing with being bullied at school, losing her friends, and sticking to her gut throughout the book. I also enjoyed watching her evolve into a better person with her mathlete best friend Ben by her side.
I really enjoyed the crazy ride with all the twists and turns of this book. 4 🌟

This book was a wee bit disappointing as well as very predictable. It may be hard for some reader due to the content of the book. It started off slow. And for me it just never picked up much.
I received an ARC through NetGalley.
I found the beginning of this book slow, but I think it serves a purpose. Once it picks up, it is a wild ride that I could not put down.
The subject matter may be difficult for some readers.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Glen Garrity goes missing while on a fishing trip, leaving behind his wife, Nina, and two teen-aged children, Connor and Maggie. His boat is found covered in blood, but his body has never been found. Was it an accident, did he stage his disappearance or was it foul play? Nina soon learns that Glen had been leading a double life and that just because you love someone, it doesn't mean you know them.
17 months later, Nina has somewhat come to terms with her husband’s disappearance and is letting go of the past. She and her children will be moving in with her soon-to-be-fiance, Simon, who will end up being the second man in her life that she loves and doesn’t know. Simon, a teacher at the kids’ high school, hits it off with Connor. Maggie, on the other hand, is sure her father is still alive and will return to the family. Simon’s charms fail to win her over, and Maggie does see the darkness inside Simon. However, their increasingly contentious relationship means she is just the girl crying wolf and no one will believe her until it’s too late.
The book is written from more than one perspective, including Nina and Maggie’s. While the story-line has some surprises and nothing is quite as it seems, I felt the book (a hefty 384 pages) was slow-paced and repetitive. First, we hear Nina’s version as it happens, then we relive it when she tells her therapist, then we relive it yet again as she thinks about it, then we hear it from Maggie’s perspective. In the end, it’s not enough to keep the momentum of the story flowing at a thriller pace. Second, Maggie’s narration seems written for a YA audience. Her perspective is vital to the telling of the story, but a lot of time is spent on Maggie’s teen-age angst as she is bullied in school, which becomes boring. Third, I know it’s a cliche, but this is a Lifetime movie. You will physically yell things at the book: open your eyes, how can you not see that, are you really that stupid, get OUT of the house!!
It’s an entertaining book if you’re looking for distraction.

Note: I received an advanced readers' copy in exchange for my honest review of this book!
I have really been into thrillers recently, and this one was a bit disappointing. I do not want to give much away in this review, but I will say that it was predictable and I guessed the end in the first few chapters. It was still an enjoyable journey, but not too suspenseful.
Nina Garrity's husband Glen is missing/presumed dead [blood found all over his fishing boat] Simon Fitch, a teacher at Nina's children's school enters her life, offering love and security. Two years later, they move in together.
Nina is vulnerable and naive. Simon is a lying, manipulative, control freak. Get it?!
Isn't it ironic that when Nina returns to work [against Simon's wishes] she's employed as a social worker at the Davis Family Center when her own family has issues?
What can I say about this book? Well written. A page turner until about 60% in and then I said: "Whoa." I'd pretty much had enough. It had, for me, become absurd--and tiresome. There were hints dropped throughout that made me certain of a few trajectories; I was correct. It became somewhat predictable. I lost interest though I did want to see how it turned out.
Spoiler alert: how did Glen get phone reception in an underground cell? {maybe I'm in error though]
What rang true: depiction of teenage angst--Maggie, her new found friend Ben, and her previous friend Laura--all accurate portrayals.
At the end--ridiculous. Too neat and tidy. And another spoiler alert: really? A book deal. $200k to track down Simon's former wife, help Detective Wheeler's widow, and for the Garritys to live on? I think not. It doesn't go that far.
The Epilogue. Groan.
So: I think it's time for me to take a break from psychological thrillers. This was an ok read, but ultimately, not so much.
Nina Garrity's husband, Glen, is missing and presumed to be dead. After Glen's disappearance, Nina discovers some disturbing information about her husband. His betrayals make Nina feel as though she never really knew her husband. Luckily, Nina has Simon Fitch in her life. He's charming, attentive, loving, and seems to know what Nina needs before she even realizes she needs it. Nina's son, Connor, adores Simon. Simon shows Connor the attention that Glen never could find the time for. Nina's daughter, Maggie, sees something else in Simon. She resents his presence in their lives and feels as though there's something about Simon that isn't quite right. Not long after Simon and Nina move in together, some weird things start to happen. Nina is frustrated with Maggie for not accepting Simon, but does Maggie have good reason to believe he's not all he seems to be?
I found this a little slow in the beginning, but I never wanted to stop reading. The second half of the book was a wild ride. Once the author revealed what was going on, I had an inkling of what would ultimately happen in the end, but I didn't know how it would happen. I was lucky to win a previous giveaway for Saving Meghan and had really enjoyed that, too. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from this author!
The new husband. Is a pretty predictable thriller. A pretty good read though. For everyone who is getting remarried or going back on the dating scene. You just never know who you might be getting
Ohhhhh, this is creepy as hell.
I don’t want to give away the story.......woman loses husband and finds what she thinks is a perfect new guy even as she is not sure what happened to her husband......that is just the very baseline for this incredible story., reaches creepy in a way I would not have thought of and sincerely hope we never see in real life......great story.
Definitely need to read.
While somewhat predictable this story still kept and held my attention. Even though I thought I knew what was coming next, I still kept holding out for a good twist...which unfortunately never came. The characters were unlikeable and gullible although it did show the gradual controlling and abusive behavior as well as the length abusers will go to which it is always good to shed light on. Looking forward to more by this author
This was a quick, interesting and enjoyable thriller. I found myself flying through the book, wanting to find out what happened next. At the same time, this book seemed very familiar to me like I've read something similar or seen a similar movie. I couldn't put my finger on what it reminded me of but it was all very familiar, which made it fairly predictable. Despite being predictable, I really enjoyed it.
This is a story of Nina, a mom of two teenagers, whose husband went missing a few years prior. She has started in a new relationship with a guy named Simon, who also happens to be a well-liked teacher and the teenagers' school. This story is told from several point of views and I really liked that approach to this story-telling. I thought author did a great job developing the teenage daughter, Maggie. Maggie's chapters were my favorite to read. I did get slightly annoyed with Nina because certain things kept being presented to her and she would just ignore them.
Overall, this was a fairly predictable, while still very enjoyable thriller and would definitely recommend for someone looking for a mystery fix.
