I’m a big fan of this author and as usual he didn’t disappoint. As a reader and a mother, it was hard not to get incensed at the mother in this book as she kept overlooking clear red flags about the man who had quickly replaced her missing/presumed dead husband. But as someone who lost a husband and desperately wanted a replacement, I could also relate to her ignoring the red flags. Quick moving, slightly too predictable but still a fun read.

Let me start by saying the second half of this book is fabulous. The first part? Not so much. I found the first have of the book dragged. It became bogged down in irrelevant, over descriptive narrative that felt like a bit of a slog. That being said, once the action started to pick up, this book moved swiftly along and became a real page turner. It's just a shame that the first half is so "wordy". I would recommend this book if you are willing to put in the work - especially as the reasoning behind Simon's actions come to light.

What a page turner! This is my first book by Palmer, but I doubt it will be my last. The story was cleverly plotted and kept me on my toes. Recommended!

The New Husband is the latest psychological thriller from DJ Palmer. I have to confess, as I started this book I thought it was going to be a very predictable story. I was certainly wrong. Mr Palmer has come through with another almost impossible story to put down. I want to thank Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for an early copy of this book to review.

This may be one of the darkest and most twisted plots I have read in quite sometime. I loved it! Her husband Glen goes fishing and disappears, then rumors begin to spread about an affair.

Nina is lost, at home with her children Conner & Maggie with no means of support and a home she cannot afford she has few options. Uprooting her life and moving home to her parents house seems the only option. A chance encounter with one of Maggie's teachers at the middle school changes everything. Simon is all the things Nina now believed her marriage lacked, an attentive man who puts her first. The story that unfolds is one that will shock you to your core, don't miss it!

I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A newly single mother falls quickly for a man who turns out to have secrets in his past.

Let me start out by saying that the majority of the reviews are very positive for this book. So halfway through, it left me wondering whether I was reading the same book as everyone else. But, I persevered and kept thinking, “just wait for it, it must get better.” Well.... it didn’t. There are so many good thrillers out there. This is not one of them. Bottom line: the story is repetitive and stagnant. Do yourself a favour and skip it.

Wow, this book was great. It was dark and mysterious. It makes you think about who you can trust in your own life! There were several moments when I gasped. I was completely shocked!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Thank you to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of The New Husband by DJ Palmer. WOW! What a book!! This one keeps twisting right to the bitter end.

So how well do you really know the man you're married to? Or living with? Our story starts with Glenn's boat found with blood in it but no Glenn. Where could he be? Is he hurt? Dead? Did he disappear to start a new life? Wife Nina has no clue and the police don't know. In swoops widowed teacher Simon to pick up the pieces. He seems like just what she needs to put her heart and life back together. But is he? Is he really a knight in shining armor or something else???

Such a great read. Highly recommend if you like stories that keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat!

Maybe her old husband died or split, but the new one seems some ominous signs. Sadly, too much is easy to guess in this well written, but ultimately less satisfying novel.

The New Husband is a complete mind game. It is so hard to get a grasp on who is seeing things clearly and telling the truth. It is a book that is a fast read that will keep you on the edge of your seat for the second half. There is a reveal in the book that actually had me ask "what the #$@!" out loud. This is a psychological thriller that I will not soon forget. 4.75 stars

Nina, a social worker and her two children Maggie and Connor are a wonderful family thrown into chaos by the disappearance of Glen her husband and father of her children. She can’t understand why he left. He disappeared without a trace and the police have since stopped looking for him. Enter Simon Fitch, a handsome social studies teacher at the high school who finds Nina’s lost puppy and brings it back to her. Before Nina knows it, he becomes a big part of their lives. At his insistence, they buy a new house together and move in as a family. Sinister things begin to happen almost immediately. Simon is one of the best characters I have ever had the “pleasure” of reading. He is secretive, cunning, and relentless. All the qualities a woman doesn’t need in a new husband. D.J. Palmer had me turning pages breathless with anxiety; afraid of what would happen next. Don’t miss this psychological thriller with a spine-chilling kick.

Your husband disappeared without a trace, enshrouded in scandal and plummeting you and your children's lives into financial and emotional despair. As you attempt to pick up the pieces, a kind teacher from your teen's school rescues the family dog, then brings by your favorite meal, and before you know it -- you're purchasing a house and moving in together. Thank goodness that after such heartbreak, you've found stability and a chance to start over! ...or is it too good to be true?

I read The New Husband in an afternoon/evening, which isn't unusual for me, but I was looking forward to seeing how the ending came about. The "twist" was rather expected, but there were definitely small surprises all the way through the final pages. The ending was satisfactory, if a bit rushed. The "reason why" seems to be a common theme in the genre lately; I just finished another book this very week with a similar concept. I wouldn't say that this book is breaking any huge barriers in the domestic thriller world, but the book was genuinely enjoyable and fast-paced. I would recommend without reservation.

Thank you to DJ Palmer, St. Martin's Press, and NetGalley for an ARC in return for my honest review.

The New Husband.... D. J. Palmer ......

Nina’s husband is missing....blood is found on his fishing boat but there is no body. Possibly too soon but she becomes involved with one of the teachers at her daughters school, Simon. He is kind, thoughtful, wants to take care of her and the kids. But something isn’t right..... her daughter Maggie can see it....but her brother Conner and Nina not so much. This psychological thriller will have you second guessing !!

Thank you so much Netgalley for an advanced copy of the book!! This will be released April 14th!!!!

A slow and intense building up of what is to come.....I thoroughly enjoyed this book! This would make an awesome movie! Was the story 100% believable.....no but yet soooo entertaining! 🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 !!

The New Husband is a good suspense book, with a great story plot. Unfortunately, the pace is a little slow in the first half part. There are a lot of details and it kept me away from being eager to know what will be happening.

Thank you Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for an early copy of The New Husband.

It is now a year since her husband Glen’s disappearance, when Simon Fitch, the history teacher at Maggie’s middle school, comes into Nina’s life. Putting everything else aside, she is determined to start over with Simon. Under the circumstances, what would you do when such a new man comes into your life knowing exactly what to do to make you happy? That is, until he doesn’t!

Nina Garrity’s husband, Glen has disappeared. He was on his fishing boat. There is blood on the boat. There is not sign of Glen or his body. He is presumed to have drowned. He has left Nina with two teenage children, Connor and Maggie, and no money. And that is not the worst of it, she finds out that, unbeknownst to her, he had lost his job and he may have been having an affair.

Since she believes herself to be a widow, Nina becomes romantically involved with Simon whose wife has died. Before long they have purchased a house and have moved in together. But Nina has not yet consented to marriage. Before she says yes, she wants to be somewhat self sufficient, get a job, and earn some money of her own.

Her children have differing opinions of having Simon in their lives. Connor enjoys spending time with him. Maggie, however, sees something dark in Simon, does not approve of him, and refuses to change her mind about him and in fact she is determined to somehow reveal this dark side to her mother. Before long, major conflicts develop between Maggie and Simon. Nina is convinced that things will get better if she can only set things right with Maggie. But before she does, everything comes unhinged putting the entire family into serious danger.

Maggie is the strongest and most likable character in the book. She never backs down from her convictions even when she is threatened. When her friends have all abandoned her, she finds that true friends are not always the popular kids in school. She finds a true friend in a most unlikely and unpopular boy named, Ben.

The title is a little misleading since Simon is not yet actually Nina’s new husband. As for the writing style itself, there are times when I felt that descriptions and metaphors are somewhat forced and so I found myself saying “what?” several times.

The book addresses many themes including family, spousal abuse, kidnapping, bullying, the importance of friendships, and especially betrayal and lying.

The story has an engaging plot. There are several twists, some predictable, along with one very unexpected turn. There is some hint of foreshadowing. The plot is reasonably realistic and not so far fetched as are some psychological thrillers. Even tough the villain is introduced early in the story, the buildup to the ending continues to hold the reader’s attention. Overall, it is well planned and sequential and is a recommended read for those who enjoy the psychological thriller genre.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book from which this review is written.

I have just finished reading The New Husband by D.J. Palmer. Thank you to Netgalley, the author and St. Martin's Press. for my advanced copy, in exchange for an honest review

I am giving this book 2.5 stars

It started off quite interesting, and then I quickly began to lose interest. I thought that it was very predictable, and that the characters were ones that I could not emphasise with. The storyline was just a tad on the hokey side for my liking. This actually felt like a YA book to me, and perhaps that is a good audience for it.

I realise that I am not giving a rating that the majority of readers are for the book, but it was not one for my liking, and I just wanted to get through it once I started it.

Okay, so I’m just going to be honest,
This book wasn’t for me.
On the positive note I will say it was very fast paced, I liked the writing style, and I really liked the chapters told from the teenaged daughters perspective.
That being said....The first half of this book did nothing but frustrate me. It fell into the “OMG would you just listen to your kid something is clearly wrong here! Ugh” trope and that is one of my least favorites.
Even this trope aside, the whole story follows a very predictable plot line.
I feel like I can’t say this book was really bad, there is just nothing to make it stand out. It wasn’t original at all. Maybe I just read to many suspense/Thrillers.
