Have a Deadly New Year by Lynn Cahoon is a novella in the Farm to Fork series that takes place between books 3 and 4 and takes place over a couple of days during New year’s eve and day. It is a short 88 pages and fairly quick read. And even though it is a short read the author still makes it hard to figure out who was the guilty party.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
Super bummed by this one. I usually enjoy the County Seat, but Angie came off as a giant nag. Hopefully, the next full sized book will be better.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book, which I voluntarily chose to review.
A fun holiday mystery with Angie and the gang. The story was good and the mystery was interesting. I enjoyed the premise of Angie and her friends catering for the rock band and the added issue of being snowed in with a killer made for an enjoyable read. Looking forward to the next Farm-To-Fork book.
I received this book from NetGalley and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
Have a Deadly New Year by Lynn Cahoon is an easy to read novella from the Farm to Fork series. I did not want to put it down.
Chef Angie and the crew have been hired to cater a dinner at the home of a rock star who is getting his old band back together for a new tour. Thanks to the star being an old friend of Felicia's they are being allowed to stay in the mansion for an additional few days for a retreat and some fun in the snow. When one of the band members is found murdered the next morning, the plans for a peaceful retreat goes out the window. No one can leave the property and the fingers are being pointed at everyone as the murderer.
The novella has plenty of suspects, a great setting, and enjoyable characters.
I was given an ARC by NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review.
"Have a Deadly New Year" is a novella in the Farm-to-Fork Mystery series by Lynn Cahoon. In this installment, the kitchen crew from The County Seat are catering a weekend for a recently reunited rock band and plan to stay in the lead musician's mansion for a week after the band leaves for a press tour. The singer, Cliff, went to school with Felicia from the restaurant. As a result, Angie and the team are excited to meet rock stars from the band Postal Mutiny.
But it turns out not everyone in the band is keen on getting back together, and there's a huge fight between Cliff and band member Dane during dinner the first night of the weekend. When one of the musicians is found dead the following morning, there are plenty of suspects. A huge snowstorm and a local child kidnapping prevent the police from investigating immediately. That means the kitchen staff are trapped with a murderer.
I enjoyed the locked-room aspect of the story and was guessing the killer's identity until it was revealed. It's a fun story but there was very little character development because it was only about 85 pages long.
First off this is a fun short (hour or less) read. Think of it as a quick between the novels kinda book. For those who question if it’s worth the $2 cost I say yes! On to the premise, a catering job at a retreat that turns into trapped with a killer. As I said before a fun quick read to get us ready for the next Farm to Fork mystery releasing April 7th titled Deep Fried Revenge!
This quick novella is perfect for an afternoon reading while the weather outside is frightful. Angie and the gang have closed the restaurant for a week to cater a private event for a famous band that is getting back together for an upcoming tour. The owner of the house, a college friend of Felicia, is throwing in a week at his house after the event. Angie and Felicia have planned a retreat, full of cooking and planning. Of course, whenever Angie is around, you know there is bound to be a murder. When one of the band members dies from a drumstick thrust into his chest, everyone is worried. Is there a murderer in their midst?
I enjoy this series and its characters. They are a close-knit group, who joke around with one another and the dialogue is well-written. I am still not sure about all of their backgrounds, but that is something else that keeps me interested. The mystery had a few red herrings, but it was quickly and easily solved. There was not a big reveal, but rather and confession during a questioning period. It was a well written story and there was a full story packed into those few pages. It definitely did its job of keeping me interested in this series while waiting for the next full length story to come out.
Have a Deadly New Year is a great quick cozy mystery. The characters are interesting and the storyline is entertaining.
This is a short novella in the Farm to Table series. The folks at the County Seat take a catering job that ends with a murder. Although short, it's still well written and the characters are interesting. I liked the dynamics between the County Seat crew as each was protective of the others. I didn't guess who the culprit was, and that's a good kind of mystery
I received an advance copy of the book from NetGalley and this is my honest review.
In this engaging novella in Ms. Cahoon’s Farm-to-Fork mystery series, restaurant owner Angie Turner, sous chef Estebe, and the rest of the County Seat gang travel to Sun Valley to cater a party for a rock band, whose leader, Cliff Henry, is an old friend of co-owner Felicia Williams. Their plan for an additional week of rest and relaxation goes awry, however, when one of the band members is murdered. Due to weather conditions and a missing child, Angie and company and the remaining band members are ordered to stay together at Cliff’s mountain retreat. What ensues is an entertaining spin on the classic locked-room mystery, where everyone is a possible suspect with a viable motive.
Although this is a novella, there is a lot going on. The mystery contains a good number of clues and red herrings to keep the reader guessing. And, surprisingly, in this short work, there is a great deal of characterization. Felicia, whom up to this point I had seen as superfluous, comes alive in this story and her past involvement with Cliff makes her immanently more likeable. Estebe, too, plays an important role in this story, and Angie once again proves herself quite capable during the murder investigation. The only downside is that the mystery is wrapped up too quickly! I would have loved for the story to continue.
As a novella, Have a Deadly New Year shines. This brief interlude with Angie and her restaurant friends has whet my appetite for the next novel in this series, which I believe will be published in the first half of 2020.
Note: I received an ARC of Have a Deadly New Year from NetGalley and Kensington Books/Lyrical Press. The above is my honest review.
This is a quick, fun novella in the Farm-to-Fork series. This was a fun way to catch up with Angie and the gang while waiting for the next book in the series. The plot and characters are well developed and I enjoyed trying to solve the mystery. I would recommend reading the other books in the series first.
An entertaining and well written cozy mystery. A good plot with a few twists and turns. Mystery fans will love this book. I received an arc from the publisher and this is my unbiased review.
Angie and her staff are excited to cater a sit down meal for a famous band and their people. The main band member has offered them up his house for a week after the party. Angie plans to spend that week working on new menu items, letting her crew have some relaxation time and enjoying the time off. Things are going well until right before dessert the band member get into an argument and everyone leaves, going their own way. Angie, excited about the out week is disheartened when one of her crew members finds a band member dead, a drumstick protruding from his chest. Who hates the man enough to kill him in such a way. Things aren't going the way Angie had hoped, they are stuck at the house with the band and their people while the police investigate. It doesn't help when the weather turns bad and the police aren't able to come to the house, who wants to be stranded in a house with a murderer. Angie keeps her crew together hoping to keep them safe until the police can find the killer. Will every one make it out safely or will the weather give the murderer a chance to kill again. This is a fun series with a great cast of characters and it always includes a fun mystery to follow and try to figure out!
No one would wish their worst enemy to Have a Deadly New Year. However, for the employees of the Country Seat restaurant and the reunited members of a 1990s band, it looks to be a dangerous holiday season!
Angie and Felicia own a small farm-to-fork restaurant. Felicia has a college connection to the recently reunited band Postal Mutiny. When she works out a deal to cater one meal for the band at the remote ski vacation house of the lead singer in return for a week of free lodging, it sounds like a win-win. However, the band’s constant fighting results in one member being “drumsticked” in the chest. When the sheriff is called away to search for a missing child, Angie steps in to solve the crime.
Angie, Felicia, and the other restaurant folks in Have a Deadly New Year feel like long-lost friends already. This is the first book in this series that I’ve read but it won’t be my last. The characters act realistically and feel genuine. The mystery was good too. 4 stars for this engaging book.
One more thing. Just a call out to the dedication to band members everywhere—you were the first friends I had who practiced mindfulness before it was even named that. Thank you for all the great life lessons.
Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Have a Deadly New Year was a fun and entertaining cosy mystery novella. The characters have depth and the mystery was interesting with some twists and turns.
Cozy Mystery – Lite Version
This is a very short, novella-length cozy mystery. I found it to be a very lite version of a cozy mystery. Most of the book is spent setting up the scene. Then the crime, the angst, and boom here's the culprit. I really doubt that this book would be worth buying unless you love the series. At only 85 pages, it is very, very short. I usually love this author's work, but not this time. However, you may love it! I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.
This is the 4th book in the Farm to Fork series by Lyn Cahoon. I have read the series and recommend it highly. This can be read as a stand alone and is a novella installment to the series. Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley. My review opinions are my own.
This is a fun short read . All the characters are here in this novella involved in a mystery . After accepting a catering job at a well known band members extravagant home a murder occurs . When a snowstorm leaves the guests and a possible murderer stranded together everyone is on edge.
This is a fun short mystery and a fun addition to the series. Well done to the author for a fun read.
I had such a good time with HAVE A DEADLY NEW YEAR, even though this is the first story in the series I’ve read. I was very glad to find that I wasn’t the least bit lost and could easily step right into a Cozy Mystery that kept my attention throughout. But, it also gave me a taste for this series which I’ll pick up throughout 2020 to get caught up on because I do want to know how it all started – that’s just the type of reader I am.
Angie and part of her crew are catering to a rock band’s reunion and plans for a getting together again tour. It helps that one of the rock stars is a friend of Felicia and that after this gig is done they all get to stay at a rock star’s home to just relax and plan for next year’s menu back at work. Unfortunately, things did not go exactly according to plan when one band member is attacked and left for dead. Now with a child missing and a blizzard overtaking them the local sheriff has other priorities to the living and Angie and her crew are left behind with a killer still among them.
There are twists and turns and a delightful story here in HAVE A DEADLY NEW YEAR. Shorter length doesn’t mean less danger or suspects that’s for certain. I enjoyed myself in this world. This story was enough of a taste of these characters that I will be following future stories and catching up on the previous titles. If you love a good Cozy Mystery with an entertaining cast of characters and a puzzle to solve then you’ll want to pick up this story soon.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
This is a quick installment in the Farm-to-Fork series. I haven’t read the other books in the series but the book stood alone.
The team from The County Seat restaurant takes on a quick on-site catering gig for a hot band in exchange for a week at the star’s mountain retreat afterwards to practice new recipes and plan the restaurant’s menu for the next quarter. It is a brilliant plan till one of the band members is murdered. An emergency in a snow storm prevents the sheriff from investigating the murder right away. And leaves the team and the band stranded in the house. With a murderer. The team bands together for safety and ends up investigating the murder.
This was a fun, quick read. I look forward to reading more in the series.
I am thankful for the electronic copy of this book I received from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
Have a Deadly New Year is the fourth installment in Lynn Cahoon’s Farm-to-Fork Mystery Series. The well-developed characters are fun and likable, and the story flows smoothly at a steady pace. The mystery is well-plotted and interesting. This novella is a quick and easy read.
Angie Turner and her best friend, Felicia Williams, own and operate a farm-to-table restaurant, The County Seat, in Angie’s hometown, River Vista, Idaho. Felicia had set up this catering job with one of her boarding school friends, Cliff Henry, the lead singer for Postal Mutiny. As part of their payment, he gave them the use of the luxurious cabin in the mountains for a week, which they planned to use as a retreat to brainstorm ideas for the winter menu at the County Seat. When a shouting match interrupts the dinner, most of the guests leave, and the next morning, Dane, one of the band members, is found dying in the dining room the next morning. Dane dies at the hospital, leaving Angie, Felicia, and three of their employees in the house with six possible killers. The County Seat group work together to figure out who murdered Dane after Sheriff John Pearson and his team have to leave to help find a missing child and are prevented from returning due to a blizzard.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
