This important book examines the very real voter suppression and disenfranchisement in the US by exploring the history, law, and race relations. There is no better writer to inform us on the matter than Gilda R. Daniels, who served as the Deputy Chief in the US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division and has extensive experience and expertise in voting rights. This prescient book is a must-read for all voters in the upcoming 2020 presidential election in the US, but also for all those who are interested, invested, and believe in a true democratic process.
Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review. You can find the full review on GR since it's very long. I post an excerpt here.
But a quick TLDR: The book is absolutely fantastic, giving the reader a densely packed book backed by hard data and rea-life example impacted by voter suppression. Daniels traces the racist system back to its root in the 1870s and carefully explains the historical context leading up to current political struggles with voting and registration access and the unlawful suppression of BIPOC votes in present-day US.
Excerpt from my review:
"This book masterfully explains a very complex topic and leads the reader through the maze that is voting rights and voter suppression. With clear language, she delivers evidence-backed content that will blow your mind with the sheer audacity of the people who are suppressing Black voting. The consequences are far reaching and when you see the connections and the network, it’s hard to express the hatred and frustration burning inside you. The injustice is sickening and I hope that current political leaders and activists can achieve the long overdue correction of this systemic issue entrenched with racism. The stakes have never been higher and I really hope that they can implement new legislations to protect the voting rights of BIPOC."
