EXCERPT: Something big was about to happen and it would blow her life apart. They had an agenda, one that Susan was a part of. Her own words came back to haunt her.
'A secret becomes a secret, not by making a vow that it will remain a secret; it's more of a subtle process. It's unwritten, unspoken - a memory buried in the deepest recesses of one's mind.'
They'd promised to keep her secret. So much for promises. Her life would be ruined when everything came out.
ABOUT THIS BOOK: Susan Wheeler is a devoted mother. She would do anything for her three children. She drops them off and picks them up every single day. Until one day when Susan kisses them goodbye and then never comes to pick them up.
Susan’s mother Mary is worried. Susan is recently divorced and has been finding things hard recently, but she loves her kids – she’d never leave them.
Susan’s sister Clare is furious. It’s just like her to go missing. It’s not the first time, either. Susan has always been a troublemaker. Always seeking attention. She knows Susan has been lying to the family for years. And she knows that Susan has been sneaking out of her family home for weeks…
As the hours turn into days, even Clare becomes fearful for Susan. And, when Mary discovers Susan’s diary, she begins to uncover a dark secret from her childhood. Something no one in the family knew. When the final diary entry leads the police to a man who is discovered dead in a local park, they’re left wondering whether Susan has vanished because she is a victim. Or because she is a suspect.
MY THOUGHTS: I really liked the first book in this series, The Next Girl. Although I didn't immediately take to the main character, DI Gina Harte, I grew to like her as the book progressed. There were some interesting personalities amongst the supporting characters, and I looked forward to seeing them grow. And therein, I think, lies the problem. They have not developed at all. And while Gina may have changed her character a little, she doesn't seem to have grown as a person either. To be quite honest, I don't understand how she ever made it into the Police Force!
The second book in this series, Her Final Hour, was a real let down for me. While it had similar faults to the first, in that some of the investigative techniques left a lot to be desired, where The Next Girl had developed into a good crime thriller, this didn't happen in Her Final Hour, and it hasn't happened in Her Dark Heart either.
I am going to quote a passage from my review of Her Final Hour because it is equally true of Her Dark Heart....'This book is clumsily written, as though it was dashed off in a hurry. The dialogue is mostly stilted. As I said earlier, there is zero character development. It was repetitive, and the characters constant dwelling on and rehashing of their traumatic pasts became extremely wearing.'
The greatest pity is that the actual plot is good. It could have been a really good read. The execution has let it down.
I said in my review of Her Final Hour, that I probably would not read any more of this series. But I did. Now, I will definitely not be reading any further books in this series. But, on a positive note, all the covers are exquisite.
I understand that reading is an entirely subjective experience and that, while this book wasn't one I enjoyed, you may well love it. So if the excerpt piques your interest and you like the sound of the plot synopsis, please get a copy Her Dark Heart by Carla Kovach and read it. I sincerely wish that I had enjoyed this more than I did.

Her Dark Heart is the fifth book in the DI Gina Harte series but can be read as a stand-alone. While I usually prefer to read cosy mysteries and was a bit wary to read a crime thriller (I hate gruesome and gratuitous cruelty scenes/chapters), I must say that the author never falls into that style even though she writes about serious and dark topics.
I haven't read the whole series yet but only the book before this one (The Liar's House) as I discovered the author only a couple of months ago. Although I really like the main character Gina Harte, there are some things that were a bit too repetitive, like the constant mention that the disappeared woman's mother reminded her of her own mother – I almost expected that lady to be related to her! I also enjoy the other police characters but would love them to be more developed in future books, especially Briggs. I will definitely check out the first three books to learn more about them because I did really care for them.
I really enjoyed this book, especially because most of it is written in the third person but some chapters are narrated by the perpetrator. We get a glimpse into his twisted mind without knowing what happened so long ago. The writing style was so different that I was on the edge of my seat and really felt more tense while reading these chapters. There were many twists and turns and suspects and even though I guessed some parts (quite late in the book), I still didn't expect the ending. Very gripping and very hard to put down, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys crime fiction.
Thank you to the publisher who provided me with an e-copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Her Dark Heart is book number 5 in the Gina Harte series. Mother of 3 Susan disappears one afternoon and fails to pick up her children. She is in the middle of a messy divorce but her mother is convinced that something sinister has happened. Her sister and soon-to-be-ex husband are equally sure she has run away as a form of attention seeking.
A body is soon found but it is that of a man, possibly the last person to see Susan before her disappearance. Gina and her team are now unsure if Susan is a suspect or a victim and must begin to unravel family secrets to get to the truth.
The plot is completely compelling and the narrative is split between the police side of the investigation and the kidnapper/murderer. The police characters work together well as a team and the process of solving the case feels realistic.
We see a lot more emotion from Gina this time because the mother of missing Susan reminds her so much of her own mother which causes her emotions to overwhelm her at times. There is still the hope of a relationship with Briggs which simmers over the course of the book. Gina’s vulnerability and humanity shine through the book, adding a personal aspect to explain her motivations and make us identify with her.
Her Dark Heart is the fifth book in the Detective Inspector Gina Harte series but don't panic if like me you haven't read the previous four titles because this book can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone.
When mum of three Susan Wheeler disappears,Gina and her team finds themselves caught up in a complex case that has more twists, turns and dead ends that a Pac Man maze.
Susan was going through a acrimonious divorce from her allegedly abusive husband but despite her troubles and her past history, her devoted mum Mary insists that Susan would never abandon her beloved children. Susan's older sister Clare is certain that Susan, who as far is she is concerned has always been a attention seeker has just run away and will eventually return home to lap up all the fuss and attention that she will receive.
But then a body is discovered and Gina and her team learn that Susan was the last person to speak to the deceased. Now they are left wondering is Susan was a victim or a suspect.
Then another member of Susan's family disappears and Gina and her team find themselves in a desperate race against time to uncover the shocking truth before someone else dies.
The short snappy chapters of this mesmerising thriller alternate between Gina and Mary who were both wonderful, feisty, likeable characters who each had their own diverse personalities. Gina was carrying a lot of baggage around with her due to her guilt over her abusive husbands death, her forced estrangement from her family and her conflicting feelings for DCI Briggs. I loved the banter and camaraderie between Gina and her team and how they all worked together, even Briggs was a really likeable character who obviously still had strong feelings for Gina. Fortunately there was none of the interdepartmental backstabbing and top ranking officers undermining Gina investigation at every junction of the case. As I said,Mary was a feisty, take no crap from no one character who was determined to discover the truth behind Susan's disappearance. She was also brave enough do what a lot of people refuse to do and admit the mistakes she had made in the past but that didn't stop her repeating the same mistakes in the present day. I didn't think that Clare was a very likeable character, she was very jealous of Susan and was obviously harbouring secrets but did she know more about Susan's disappearance than she was admitting. Interspersed throughout the book was chapters that were voiced by a very twisted but also very clever and calculating character. These chapters were very sinister and creepy and often gave me goosebumps and sent shivers down my spine. But who was this person and how did they fit into the story.
Her Dark Heart is a exceedingly well written, tightly plotted thriller that had me hooked in from very first page and frantically turning the pages. It is a very chilling story that has some very intense moments and a truly unexpected reveal that almost caused me to drop my kindle in shock. I most definitely didn't see that twist coming. If you love a thrilling mystery/thriller police procedural that has a feisty, flawed heroine and keeps you guessing then I highly recommend that you get your hands on a copy of this brilliant book. I haven't read the previous four titles in this series and now have the pleasure of rectifying that as soon as possible. Very very highly recommended.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Her Dark Heart, the fifth novel to feature Midlands based DI Gina Harte.
I am so glad I discovered this author so a HUGE thank you to #bookouture and #netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. 'I found the story very believable and well written. I could see this being a movie. It is one of those where you keep thinking you know what is coming but twists and turns and then some more.
I look forward to reading more of Carla Kovach books, Again thank you for allowing me the privilege of reading this book
WoW.............Her Dark Heart by Carla Kovach is the fifth book in the Detective Gina Harte Book and it was just Brilliant. This is one author I just have to turn my phone off, cancel everything for that day, so I can get comfy in my chair, then become in-grossed in the book. Plus, I guarantee it will be a toasted sandwiches for my families tea that night........or a take away. I find once I start reading Carla's book Its hard to put down especially as its a great pounding page turner. I just want to see what happens. This book did not disappoint its full of twists and turns that will have you wanting more. The characters were just brilliant throughout.
Recently Divorced mother of 3 Susan Wheeler is a devoted parent and works from home as a Book keeper. When, she fails to pick up her young son from the Bluebells Day Care Nursery. The only one that cares is her beloved mother Mary, she is worried why her daughter has not picked her grand son up from the nursery. Mary, knows thats Susan loves all her children and would never leave them without contacting someone first.
Clare is Susan's sister, she is a single parent and has a young son, and they live with their mother. Clare feels she has to work hard to get their mother attention throughout their childhood. So, when Susan did not pick up her son from nursery she became annoyed that Susan was getting all the attention again! Susan used to run away from home throughout her childhood and turn up a few days later with the attitude that nothing has happened!
The clock is ticking for Susan as hours turns into days. no one has seen Susan. Her Mother Mary has become more worried about her and she knows her children are missing her. Mary pops back to Susan's house and starts to tidy and have a good snoop around to find anything why Susan has disappeared. Mary finds an old diary from her school years and she uncovers a very dark secret from Susan's childhood. Something that no one in the family knew about. Mary starts to read the diary and is shocked on what she reads.
Detective Gina Harte is investigating the disappearance of Susan.
A local man is found dead in the local park.........and Detective Gina Harte is called to the scene.
Is this man anything to do with Susan's disappearance especially as Susan's know him from School.
WoW..............What a book. I highly recommend this series of books and especially to read these in order. However, it can be a stand alone book as well.
There 5 Books within this series by Carla Kovach and these in order are:
1. The Next Girl
2. Her Final Hour
3. Her Pretty Bones
4. The Liar’s House
5. Her Dark Heart
Big Thank You to Bookouture and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased
Her Dark Heart is the fifth book in the Detective Gina Harte crime thriller series by Carla Kovach. In this case, Gina Harte and her team are trying to find Susan Wheeler, a mother who went missing, leaving no clues behind. The detectives become more pressured to solve the case as days go by and tension in the community escalates.
I love this series and really enjoy reading about Gina. I have always loved how well-portrayed she is. She is such a tough detective with great instincts. On the other hand, she is also a mother, grandmother and a woman just trying to get over a dark past. Her vulnerability makes her easy to root for. Her astuteness in solving cases always provides for a captivating read. In this story, Gina is dealing with memories of her mother and regrets that come with the loss. I don’t know why I wasn’t too keen on Gina’s personal issues this time. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind getting a case where Gina won’t be going through a major thing in her personal life.
Narrated from multiple points of view, Her Dark Heart is a combination of domestic suspense and crime thriller. It had my mind racing as I tried to complete the puzzle. However, the unpredictability of the narrative made it hard to guess any of the twists. This is a fast-paced, captivating read. Another great addition to the series.
This case hits too close to home for Gina Harte. The mother of the missing woman could be her own dead mother come to life. Now Gina has to find the woman, a murderer and the courage to come to terms with her past. I liked how real the struggle Gina fought felt. And I was despised about the doings of persons children trusted. How easy it seems to be getting close to someone and then ensuring the silence. The end gives hope for the future and that’s how I like a book to end.
I have been a huge fan of Carla's work for a little while now. Ever since I had the good fortune to pick up the first book in the series featuring Detective Inspector Gina Harte. 'Her Dark Heart' is the fifth book in the series and it's another corker from Carla Kovach. I thoroughly enjoyed 'Her Dark Heart' but more about that in a bit.
What can I say about Detective Inspector Gina Harte? Well she is a dedicated police officer, who been through a lot lately both professionally and privately. You can guarantee that when Harte investigates a case, she will investigate to the best of her ability and until the case has been solved. She is in charge of a small team and I get the impression that they all get on and that they all have respect for Harte. I have to say that my fondness for DI Gina Harte only increases with each book that is released in the series. She has to be one of my favourite female lead detectives of all time.
I was drawn to this book from the compelling synopsis, never mind from when I started to read the book itself. As soon as I started to read the story itself, I just knew that I wouldn't be able to put the book down. The book wasn't exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn't bear to miss a single second of the story. Thank goodness it rained all day because it meant that I didn't have to take the dog out and could therefore read all day. This was a binge read book, which I read over the course of a day. In Gina Harte, I felt as though I had been reunited with an old friend and I began to feel as though I was another member of her team again. I reached the end of the book far quicker than I had intended to. I know that sounds negative but I certainly don't mean it that way. I was enjoying the author's writing style, the storylines and the characters so much that I just didn't want the book to end.
'Her Dark Heart' is brilliantly written but then I wouldn't expect anything else from Carla Kovach. She certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start with a beginning that will stay fresh in my mind for a long, long time to come. For me, the story started with a bang and the pace didn't let up from then on. The story hit the ground running and maintained the pace throughout. Carla uses such vivid and powerful descriptions that I really did feel as though I was part of the story myself and an extra member of Harte's team.
Reading 'Her Dark Heart' was much like being on a scary and unpredictable express train style rollercoaster ride with more twists and turns than you would find on a Snakes & Ladders board. On more than one occasion I almost had to read through my fingers as I feared what was going to happen next or I was reluctant to turn the page for fear of what was awaiting me over the page. I had to give myself a talking to as I realised that if I had any hope of discovering how the story concluded the of course I had to keep reading. This is one of those books that will get the adrenaline flowing and will send your heart rate and blood pressure through the roof.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Her Dark Heart' and I would most definitely recommend it to other readers. I will definitely be reading more of Carla's work in the future. The series featuring Detective Inspector Gina Harte goes from strength to strength with each new book better than the last. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
Number 5 in the Gina Harte series.
I love this character as she is strong but is damaged by her past. We get to know her even better in this book.
The plot is dark with lots of twists to keep you guessing right to the very last page.
Great series and I'm already looking forward to the next one.
This book is a fast paced thrilling ride. I could hardly put it down. it is a gripping page turner. I found the the first few chapters a little confusing as it changed from different viewpoints. I quickly caught up and just wow. This is the 5th book in the series but I must admit it’s my first read (probably why I was a tad confused at first) but honestly it can stand alone. This is a haunting gripping story the foreboding and gripping tail all the more nail biting since I did not known the backstory. However, I quickly became immersed in Gina’s world. I love the glimpses into e mind of each character and i just could not even begin to guess how this was going to go. Total win on the intensity and gripping mystery aspect of the plot and writing. Completely floored by the reveal at the end. I highly suggest this one it’s a fantastic book. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
As a big fan of Carla Kovach, I was excited to read this latest release in the Detective Inspector Gina Harte series.
Gina is in charge of a case to find a missing mum of three. Susan Wheeler has recently filed for divorce and disappeared leaving little Rory at nursery with no-one to pick him up. Her mum Mary is distraught and knows that Susan would never leave without her children. Soon to be ex-husband and sister Clare are far less concerned about the disappearance, in fact, both seem to dislike Susan.
I enjoyed all the insights into Gina Harte's personal life. As always the demons from her past affect her deeply but she is always completely professional at work and well respected amongst her team. As a reader, you just know that Gina won't rest until the case is solved.
I had my suspicions from early on, some were right but as always most were wrong. I think Carla Kovatch has a talent for offering minute details to make the reader feel involved. However, she then throws a huge spanner in the works and produces an outcome that you could never even imagine!
This is the fifth in the series but they can be read out of order. The author does a great job of updating Gina's backstory without making it repetitive for readers who are staunch followers of the series.
This is a fantastic dark police procedural that will keep you gripped far into the night.
I’ve read books 3 and 4 of this series and really enjoyed them but I struggled with this one. I found it slow going and it was a bit of a chore to finish it. I love Gina’s character but there was a lot of filler about Gina’s relationship with her mum and her past. I didn’t find any of Susan’s family particularly likeable either which made caring about their story difficult. We also don’t really get to know Susan which meant I wasn’t overly bothered about whether she was a victim or a killer.
That being said I will still be reading books 1 and 2 when I have time. I will also definitely pick up any future books in the series because I love the main characters and I’ve enjoyed the previous books.
I received a copy of the ebook via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
A brilliant cracker of a story which made me a fugitive, hiding from everyone until I finished the book.
A police procedural where the cops were called when a mother of three went missing. DI Gina Harte was back at the helm with her team.
My second book by author Carla Kovach, I had to admit the writing was stronger and bolder often taking the darker paths of life, especially in the end. I loved that the author could tell me facts without going into graphic details. Balance was maintained in the entire book. I could get the vibe of a real mystery amongst characters which felt real. Family secrets were indicated to, which made the story far more intriguing
A special mention about DI Gina Harte. She is becoming my favorite now with this book. She was stronger here, yet more vulnerable in some ways, with a personal story that took her into the thoughts of her past. She had to let go of her grief for her own mother to search for the mother who has been lost to her children for days. She was relentless, and I loved how she was so ably supported by her team.
Clues were written in at the perfect time which made me a tag-along detective. I could guess the villain a few minutes before the cops. Ah well, I would do better next time. Overall, a perfect midnight read
Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of this book via Netgalley and for letting me take part in this tour. I am a huge fan of Carla and Detective Harte so I couldn't wait to dive back in. This is book 5 but you could read the books as standalones if you wanted. I think you would get more out of them if you read them as a series though.
Susan Wheeler has gone missing and Detective Harte and her team are assigned to investigate. As well as looking into Susan's disappearance we also learn a lot more about Gina's personal life. If you have read the previous books you will know this has been building for a long time and I have been looking forward to this since the very first book.
I have to make a special mention of Susan's daughter, Phoebe. She is one brave, feisty child. I was extremely proud of her.
The crime itself has a lot of twists and turns and while I did guess small elements of it the majority of it was not predictable. Carla has always done a very good job of shocking her audience. Carla keeps you on the edge of your seat right up until the very end.
I really enjoyed this book and it was great to really understand Gina more too. I can't wait for the next instalment of DI Harte.
Her Dark Heart is the fifth book in the excellent DI Gina Harte series, set in the fictional town of Cleevesford, Warwickshire. While I always do like to read series in order, this one could easily stand alone as each mystery is separate and you get all the backstory you need. These are well written if not particularly original police procedurals which cover some fairly dark topics but they are not overly gruesome or gratuitous.
When separated mother of three Susan Wheeler doesn’t collect her young son from preschool, her mother Mary is sure something has happened to her, but her other daughter Clare thinks it’s just the same attention-seeking behaviour she showed as a teenager, for which she has always resented her. Still grieving the loss of her own mother, and hiding a terrible secret, DI Gina Harte takes the missing persons case, but when a friend of Susan’s is found dead, the team must find her before the killer strikes again.
Firstly, may I congratulate the author on consistently having the most beautiful covers in crime fiction - every one in this series has been both stunning and appropriate. Secondly, for writing another gripping thriller that successfully kept me wondering what was going on. I can’t say much more about the plot without spoiling it, but Kovacs manages to keep producing great reads when some Detective series start to run out of ideas by this stage.
I do have mixed feelings about the heroine, though, and I will admit to being a difficult reader who doesn’t like her MCs too perfect, or too damaged, and also gets bored with too much angst. Gina has spent five books torturing herself about killing her abusive husband in self-defence, years earlier, (this is not a spoiler) and dithering about her feelings for her kindly boss, DCI Chris Briggs. Each time, by the end of the book, it seems like she’s sorted herself and her complicated relationship with her daughter out, but by the next one she’s back where she was, drinking too much and feeling that annoying mix of self-pity and self-loathing. I just want her to see a counsellor and meet someone more appropriate so she can focus on what she’s good at - solving crimes.
I’ve said this before but it bears repeating, I would like to know more about the other members of Gina’s team rather than all the personal stuff being about her. The same characters keep recurring but they are not developed at all.
These are the elements which stop this being a 5 star read for me. I will however happily continue the series if it is to continue.
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC which allowed me to give an honest review, and apologies to the author for it being a couple of days late.
Her Dark Heart is available now.
"Her Dark heart" is the fifth book in the 'DI Gina Harte' series though it is the second one I’ve read. This was a great read for me as a standalone psychological thriller, but no doubt it would have been better to have read the books in chronological order, from the beginning.
In this instalment, when divorced mother of three, Susan Wheeler disappears, reactions are mixed. Susan’s mother Mary is worried. Susan had recently been finding things hard, but she loves her kids and would never leave them. Susan’s sister, Clare, is furious as this is not the first time she has gone missing. She believes Susan is an attention-seeking troublemaker who has been lying to the family. She knows that Susan has been sneaking out of her family home for weeks. Eventually, even Clare becomes fearful for Susan. When Mary unearths Susan’s diary, she begins to uncover a dark secret from Susan's childhood. When the final diary entry leads the police to a man who is discovered dead in a local park, they’re left wondering whether Susan has vanished because she is a victim or a suspect…
The author has written a really clever and fascinating story that drew me in right from the very first page. Detective Gina Harte takes up the case, assisted by her team, hoping to discover what happened to Susan. Feisty and down-to-earth, Gina is a brilliant Detective Inspector. The supporting characters were an interesting assortment; some I liked, others I wasn't so keen on, but they all had a valuable contribution to make to the story-line.
The fabulous plotting and great pacing by Carla Kovach also aided my enjoyment of the story. I suspected several of the characters, yet as is often the case, I failed to identify the actual perpetrator. Told from differing points of view, the story twisted and turned throughout the chapters, optimising the tension levels as the story propelled its way towards the revealing denouement.
If you love a good detective series and psychological thriller with plenty of shocks and twists then "Her Dark Heart" is for you. I highly recommend this novel without any doubt.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my request, from Bookouture via NetGalley and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
This is book #5 in the Detective Gina Harte series. It can be read as a standalone book, but for better understanding of Gina’s story, I would recommend reading the books in series order. We are back with Gina Harte who has been given the case of a missing mother who failed to collect her children from school and nursery. In the middle of a divorce, it is completely unlike Susan to go off and not pick up her children. Susan’s mother, Mary is worried when she finds a diary belonging to Susan which uncovers a hidden secret…
I’m pleased to be back with this series as I’ve really enjoyed the previous books and I love Gina Harte’s character. It was also great to see Gina’s team back to assist her and I was particularly happy to see her boss, DCI Briggs, who Gina has had an on/off relationship over the previous books. Whilst they seem to be stuck in the ‘off’ position, I eagerly read on in the hope that switches over as I love their relationship together. Gina is a great character who has been through a lot in the past thanks to her abusive husband, and I’d love to see her with a happy ending.
The plot of the missing Susan Wheeler was fast paced and gripping. Told from different points of view, the story twisted and turned throughout the chapters building up the tension as the story raced its way to its revealing conclusion. The characters were a mixed bag, some you liked, others you just couldn’t stand (you’ll know who I mean when you read it!!) but they all contributed something to the storyline!
This is definitely a dark suspense filled thriller, which left me furiously turning the pages to get to the end. It certainly gets you thinking of what was going on and where the storyline was taking you!! A great read, which I would definitely recommend!!
Excellent psychological thriller! It moved at a fast pace with twists and turns throughout! Well-developed characters and plot. Highly recommend!
All I can say is BRILLIANT!!!!
I'm so glad I discovered this author so a HUGE thank you to #bookouture and #netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I found the story very believable and well written. I so see a movie! It is one of those where you keep thinking you know what is coming but you are oh so wrong! There's twists and turns and then some more! Who can you really trust?
Susan Wheeler has vanished. She does not pick up her son from the Bluebells Day Care Nursery and this is very unlike her. Nobody can get hold of her and the next day her mother reports her as missing. She is busy getting a divorce and is struggling to keep it together but her 3 children are her everything. Surely she would not abandon them like this? Surely the fact that she went missing as a child has nothing to do with what is happening now.........
"It's nice getting the old gang back together, all of us coming together where it all began."
DI Helena Wheeler is in charge of trying to figure out what happened to her but meeting Susan's mom brings back a lot of bad memories.
I am definitely going to read more books from this author. This is book 5 in the series but I dont feel like I missed anything by not having read the first 4.
