didn't get to read it, thought it got sent to my netgalley shelf app but sadly it didn't , so I won't be able to read and review it like I was hopping to do
For a second book, it was pretty good. I read it with my son and he enjoyed it after reading the first.
Malamander is one of my all-time favorites and I could not wait to get my hands on Gargantis! We get back to the action with Herbert and Violet. This one takes place more on the sea than in Erie, but I loved it just as much.
The fantasy aspect and saving the town worked just as well as trying to find out Violet's past.
I love Erie and would give anything to visit the hotel and the town. It is so mysterious and you can almost feel the town in the writing.
This is one of my favorite middle grade series and I cannot wait for more adventures with Herbert , Violet and the town full of suspicious people. I cannot wait until the next mysterious monster comes to town.
Thanks to NetGalley and Candlewick Press for providing the ARC in exchange for an honest review. 4 stars
Coming back to Eeerie-on-Sea and following Herbie and Violet on another mysterious adventure felt a bit like visiting with old friends. This second instalment set in the not-so-quaint and more than a little 'eerie' seaside town was action-packed from the go and was just as exciting as the first. Although the ARC had some missing illustrations, I still loved the ones I saw and it's probably one of my favourite aspects of the books! Technically, even if you haven't read Malamander you can still read this book and you won't get lost, but why would you even wanna do that? 😉
In Gargantis, we learn a lot about the legends and old fishermen's tales alongside Herbie and Violet against the backdrop of a ghastly storm that's brewing over the town. Is this just a 'regular' albeit more violent than usual storm or is this because a monster has awakened? As always, there's a certain sense of foreboding to the story as Herbie manages to wind up being responsible for an artefact that many people in town would literally kill for. We get to see many familiar faces, but we're also introduced to new and intriguing characters such as Old Squint Westerly and Boadicea Bates, as well as another very creepy nemesis in Deep Hood. Taylor a fantastic job in creating a spooky atmosphere, and especially in introducing a new villain who will have goosebumps racing down your spine! You'll no doubt be kept on your toes with a few surprising twists thrown in, especially at the end, that will leave you eager for more!
While I was hanging on to see how our duo would save the day, the best part for me continued to be the wholesome friendship between Herbie and Violet. They have such contrasting personalities but they bring out the best in each other, and you can see that theirs is a bond that's for a lifetime. While Herbie will always have a soft spot in my heart, and I was eager to learn more about how he ended up washed ashore as a baby, Violet really stole the show with her go-getter attitude and unfailing support for Herbie. Sure, it might've gotten them into many of the scrapes they experienced in the story, but she encouraged Herbie to confront his fears, though never alone, and that was so wonderful to see! This is the type of friendship everyone needs in their life, and they're both so great and really deserve the best 💙
TL;DR: This was such a delightful sequel that I'm sure many young readers will absolutely enjoy (I know that my young-at-heart self really did)! 😉 It's full of action and mystery, as well as supportive friendships and a lot of heart. I can't wait to come back to Eerie-on-Sea to learn more about Herbie (because now I'm really even MORE curious to learn about his history) and Violet in the next instalment!
There's a storm brewing over Eerie-on-Sea, and the fisherfolk say a monster is the cause. Someone has woken the ancient Gargantis, who sleeps in the watery caves beneath this spooky seaside town where legends have a habit of coming to life. It seems the Gargantis is looking for something: a treasure stolen from her underwater lair.
Thanks to #NetGalley, the publisher #CandlewickPress and the author #ThomasTaylor for providing me with a digital ARC of #Gargantis in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and not influenced in any way. This book is the second in the series, the first book is Malamander. I loved this book, the illustrations are wonderful and the plot certainly got me hooked! I cannot wait for the third in the series to be released. This book comes highly recommended..
Not quite as incredibly charming as the first but still very much matches the tone. This series reminds me of a seaside Lemony Snicket and that’s very much a good thing!
Step back into the world of Eerie-on-Sea and join Herbert and Violet once again as they try to solve the mystery of Gargantis. If you haven't read the first book of this series, then I highly recommend you do to understand how Herbert and Violet came to this eerie city.
The illustrations alone in this book are stunning, and I eagerly look forward to seeing all of them in the release of this book. You will meet a very mysterious character called who is trying to steal the treasure that Herbert is valiantly trying to hide. What is this? Just imagine a funny looking character that looks like a cross between a fairy and a lightning bug, at least in my imagination anyway.
If you are looking for a sea-faring adventure full of twists and thrills, then this book is for you!
It was wonderful to be back in Eerie-on-Sea! Gargantis is an excellent Follow up to Malamander. The story is just what you are looking for once finishing The 1st book. The author gave us more of the quirky world and lovable Characters. The folklore/legend the author has created is sure to make this a classic.
Thank you Netgalley & Walker Books for an eARC of this book. All opinions are my own!
I somehow keep ending up with ARCs of Taylor's work, and they're always fantastic. The art always helps enhance the atmosphere, and the books themselves are wholesome and adventurous in the best ways possible. Eerie-on-Sea has such a cool atmosphere that jumps off the page, and Gargantis is so weirdly optimistic from beginning to end that I'm never sure where things are going to go. Twists and turns come out of nowhere, but don't seem out of place.
The characters continue to be so endearing from the first book, with Violet getting more plot development and Herbie possibly getting some resolution at some point in the sequel with some things that were dropped? Definitely keeping my eyes on the sequel, because this poor kid needs to know here. Blaze also might be one of my new faves, he's a good middle ground for Herbert and Violet to bounce off.
Ultimately, a worthy successor to the first, and an amazing ride all the way through. One I'd recommend to anyone looking for a cute little adventure.
It was SO GOOD to return to Eerie-on-Sea! I loved the first book in the series, Malamander, because it was adventurous and exciting and creepy and the setting was so wonderfully depicted. And I'm delighted to report that all my favorite elements of #1 reappear just as strongly in #2, Gargantis!
This installment of Herbert and Violet's story involves a huge storm, local fisherfolk lore, a sea monster, a clockwork crab, another terrifyingly not-quite-human bad guy, and some more hints revealed about the possible fates of Herbert and Violet's parents! All of my favorite characters from the first book appeared again - including Seegol and his seaside diner, which never fails to make me really crave a good batch of fish and chips.
I really cannot rave about this series enough. If you like your middle grade fiction chock full of adventure and mystery, featuring smart and capable characters, with just enough scary stuff to give you goosebumps without keeping you up all night, all set in the most fantastically developed and deliciously eerie seaside town, THIS IS FOR YOU.
Final verdict: I'm obsessed with it! I thought this book was amazing! It's now officially one of my favorite books! I shall be shouting about it from the rooftops for days and I am currently recommending it to everyone I come in contact with!
This was soooo good! It was so good that the first book is bland comparing to it. I loved everything. I cannot talk about anything so I wouldn't spoil it, but the third book can't come soon enough. This became one of my favorite book of all time.
A wonderful sequel for fans of Malamander! In this book, Eerie-on-Sea is being hit hard by harsh storms and legend has it that these storms are caused by a sea monster known as Gargantis. When Lost-and-Founder Herbie Lemon receives two mysterious lost objects (a clockwork hermit crab and a glowing glass bottle), it sets him on an adventure to uncover the truth about Gargantis.
There's a quirky sort of charm to Eerie-on-Sea and its residence, which will appeal to fans of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.
I enjoyed Malamander so I was excited about Gargantis and thrilled to find I enjoyed it even more then the first book. In Gargantis readers get to see more of Violet and Herbert’s wonderful friendship, learn more about the history of Eerie-on-Sea, and have another great adventure. The book does have some great new elements but also focuses on expanding the readers’ knowledge of its already loved setting and characters. I enjoyed having less exposition in this book to focus more on the character development and lore of Eerie-on-Sea. Most importantly I loved how we get the start to some of the answers to the larger overarching mysteries of this series. This new mystery is a lot of fun and full of great twists. Overall I think fans of Malamander will be excited by this next installation in the series.
This is a great series and I loved both instalments.
Gargantis is an excellent story, well thought and gripping that I throughly enjoyed.
It's well written, the plot is well crafted, the world building amazing and the cast of characters interesting and rounded.
It's a story that can appreciated by people of any age and I loved it.
It's strongly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
I received this ebook in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I purchased and read Malamander in preparation for Gargantis and am pleased that I did. Malamander was wonderful and Gargantis was even better. It was full of adventure and many twists and turns. I hope that there will be another book in this series as I would love to follow Herbie and Violet as they continue to look for lost and found items as well as family.
I gladly give this book 5 stars!
This book was just as phenomenal as the first installment, Malamander. There's just something about Eerie-on-sea that grabs you and doesn't let you go. Gargantis is a whirlwind of events - fast-paced and heart-stopping, full of adventure and magic. A perfect book for any middle-grade fan!
Gargantis continues the story of life in Eerie-on-Sea. Herbie and Violet are once again having adventures that MG readers are searching for. Filled with enough twists, turns, and unique characters to keep even the most reluctant reader asking, "What next?"
Thank you NetGalley and Candlewick Press for the opportunity to read an advance reading copy.
Gargantis is the second book in an epic, eerie, and mysterious adventure by Thomas Taylor. Set in the world of Eerie on the Sea, we get to return to this place and hang out with Herbie, Violet, and Erwin again.
Gargantis starts off with the way every great ocean adventure begins with a bottle and a message. It was the more mysterious of the two books. This story was filled with twists and turns it seemed in every other chapter. This book did not go in any way that I expected, which made for an epic adventure. There was much more world building in Gargantis with a few new characters.
The main characters Herbie, Violet, and Erwin. Herbie Lemon is more of a wall flower, and he is extremely honest. Because of his candor, he is put in charge of returning lost items to their people. Violet is the female lead and she is a brain who figures out clues, even I failed to catch onto. Lastly, there is Erwin the cat who comes in clutch throughout the series. All the characters have fun names that are all seaworthy.
Gargantis filled with vocab and trivia facts, that I learned a lot from as an adult. The book is filled with gorgeous illustrations that really bring the characters and some scenes to life. My favourite place/item from the book is the Eerie Book Dispensary. Characters have the Meremonkey pick out a book for them. It is a book that is need by the character. I think that is such a cool magical concept. I wish they exsited in real life.
While this is the second book, and would be best read after completing Malamander, Taylor gives enough background on each of the characters, so you learn everything you need to know for this next great adventure.
I received an electronic Advanced Reader Copy of Gargantis from Candlewick Press through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own.
Gargantis is every bit as good as Thomas Taylor's first Eerie-On-Sea adventure Malamander. I love good world building and in Eerie-On-Sea Taylor has created a great backdrop in which to set his adventurous mysteries. Herbie and Violet are characters that are immediately appealing and relatable enough that you find yourself wishing you could join them on solving the mystery of the ancient fish bottle and it's magical contents. I love Taylor's writing. It is compelling, descriptive and filled with the type of detail that makes Eerie and his eccentric characters jump off the page. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves mysteries, thrillers and adventures stories. I will definitely buy a copy of this book and will without a doubt recommend it to my students.
