My final conclusion is wow!!!
This sure was an interesting story and I definitely didn't want it to end. The book held me captive from beginning to end.
I sure had no idea who the culprit was until the end. The many interwoven characters from different aspects of law enforcement and how the plot blended them together was definitely interesting.
Brooke and Asher bonded from shared trauma and experiences. Fighting to stay alive and also bring down the bad guys who were part of what seemed to be an international crime ring. The issues brought forth from PTSD to human trafficking, I love how she dealt with these topics with grace. Brooke is a fighter and though she still has some issues from her time in Afghanistan, I love how she still put herself out there to try and help others.
The faith elements in the story were also wonderful, you were created for a reason. The romance wasn't overly there but blended well with the story and it's fast paced nature.
Overall, this was another win for me in this genre and I'm definitely looks forward to the next book in the series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions expressed are solely mine.
I loved this start to a new series by Lynette Eason. I am never disappointed with these stories. This one starts with a former army special ops soldier and a former military psychiatrist. These two both have stuff to work out from their time in a war zone. It ends up with them needing each other to help them through a lot of twists and turns. There is a little romance throughout and a lot of action. I can’t wait to find out how this story continues in the second book of the series. I received a copy of this book from Revell for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Reads. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts.
What a twisty, complicated story! This was an atypical Lynette Eason read for me in that I was not able to figure out very many details prior to a couple of pages before the twists or reveals came. Sometimes her books are more predictable to me (yet still quite enjoyable), but this one kept me guessing throughout. Something that aided that was the high tension present in every chapter and the stakes that kept ramping up with each turn of events.
The style was good overall. I did struggle at times to keep a few characters straight. I think this was because many names were given in a few patches early on. That made it more difficult for me to settle in to which characters were POV holders and which were supporting. It settled out in my mind eventually, but this was a bit of a struggle for me. There were a handful of word or phrase choices that bugged me, and they seemed out of character for the author compared to her earlier books. Other aspects of the style were great. The author voice was clear, the military details seemed spot-on, and the human trafficking aspect appeared well researched and applied. My reading experience was enhanced by the details of the way of life in Afghanistan, particularly as it pertained to American female military personnel, as this helped me immediately feel immersed in the tale.
The plot twists were fabulous, and I never really got a foothold on figuring things out ahead of time. Usually, with an Eason book, I can figure out one or two of the main bad guys way before the big reveal. This time, though, I was unable to do so. The pacing and surprises and high tension lent themselves well to creating an edge-of-my-seat reading experience that kept me mentally off kilter in the best way.
One thing I always know I’m getting with an Eason book is fantastic, well-developed characters. This book continued that trend, and I was happy to get to know the cast as I moved from one chapter to the next. The supporting characters were just as developed as the leads, which increased the quality of the book as well as perfectly set up the next one in the series (because, yes, now I’m completed psyched and ready to read Sarah’s story—so glad she’s up next!). The problems they each faced were raw and real-life and well executed. Because of that, this story felt organic and realistic and like it was happening to people who could have pounded on my door for a safe hiding spot from the bad guys in pursuit.
Overall, this story was another winner from Mrs. Lynette Eason. It’s a great fit for fans of military fiction, real-world problems, and thrillers. It was a great start to the Danger Never Sleeps series, and it left me eager to reach the next installment’s release date, which definitely won’t arrive soon enough.
Triggers: PTSD (a main theme), human trafficking
Content: a smidge of graphic war violence in an early chapter
Collateral Damage by Lynette Eason – Likable engaging characters in a suspenseful story
As someone who loves to read Christian mystery/fiction books, I was excited at the opportunity to read Lynette Eason’s newest book, Collateral Damage, the first book in the Danger Never Sleeps series.
Collateral Damage starts off at an army base in Afghanistan where the men are preparing to arrest a fellow soldier, Isaiah Michaels who is suspected of being a traitor and selling information to the jihadists. Sergeant Asher James doesn’t believe the allegations because it doesn’t square with the man he knows. But he has been charged with leading the operation as two MARP vehicles set out to Kabul to arrest Specialist Michaels who has been spotted at a bar. Military psychologist, Brooke Adams is looking forward to heading home in three weeks. She’s meeting some friends at The Bistro in Kabal. When Specialist Michaels tries to catch her eye, Brooke does her best to tune him out and focus on her friends who have become like family so far away from home.
What happens next is just the beginning of an action-packed story filled with suspense and lots of twists and turns. What information did Isaiah Michaels find? Did he betray his country? What accounts for the large increase of adoptions at Morning Star Orphanage over the last year? How does it all fit together?
I found myself invested in this story because I liked the main characters and I wanted to get to the bottom of the mysteries. I appreciate that the story did not have filthy language or sexual immorality. The Christian faith was a part of the storyline and the two main character behavior and choices were influenced by their faith.
I did struggle with the first chapter because it was long and it introduced at least fourteen characters in a very fast-paced story. After that chapter, the pace and number of characters slowed down. I think it would have been better to break it up into two chapters. I did figure out who the bad guy was but that didn’t take away from enjoying the book. I was interested to find out his motivation.
Collateral Damage is the first novel I’ve read by Lynette Eason and I really liked it. The best part of the book for me was the engaging likable characters. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
If you like suspense and action with likable characters, read Lynette Eason’s newest book Collateral Damage.
I would like to thank Revell Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read Collateral Damage by Lynette Eason. I was provided a complimentary copy of this book to read but was not required to give a favorable review.
this is a revitting suspense story, Asher and Brook both where in the service and in the middle east. both where injured and are trying to survive. now strange things are happing and someone wants them dead. I could not put the book down till the end if you like suspense you will want to read the book I was given a copy by netgalley but this is an honest reivew
Wow… I just finished this suspenseful and thrilling read. I believe it is one of the best books that Eason has written in a long time...and I love her books! It had a gripping mystery and was so suspenseful that she had me on the edge of my seat. If you want a rollercoaster ride with a thrilling ending, you’ll want to read this award winning author. Collateral Damage is the first book in her Danger Never Sleeps series. Once you start it, you won’t want to put it down!
At first I wasn’t sure where she was going with a couple different storylines and different viewpoints, mainly in the beginning. However, all of those viewpoints come together beautifully with a message that is so important in today’s world. Where danger and evil can go unseen so easily and criminal activity be happening right on our doorstep. I really can’t go into more without giving away the mystery of this awesome book, so I won’t! You just have to read it for yourself. I did love a few things that I can share though...
I loved the characters, the heart of the story, and nonstop suspense. The romance really starts with two veterans struggling with PTSD helping each other only to be put right into the crosshairs of a killer. That really added to the storyline. Another area I loved was the focus on a group of military females and males...how each struggles with deployment. Then, the story carries on after they return to civilian life where they are around other veterans with similar struggles. Eason did a great job in portraying PTSD symptoms and how much it affects real life. Her portrayal of the military has all the action of a Ronie Kendig novel, which added a whole new level to the story! Combine that with Eason’s masterful suspense and you have a truly gripping read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good suspenseful mystery with a message that needs to be addressed. Want to know what that message is? Then run don’t walk to buy Collateral Damage. High praise for this new series. I am looking forward to her next book.
Due to the message of this book it does involve a heavier topic, but I found Eason dealt with it in a way that reminded me of her Women of Justice series. One of my favorite series, so I’m looking forward to her next book.
I was graciously provided an advanced reader copy through the publisher and NetGalley. I was not required to give a positive review. I am giving my honest opinion.
Brooke Adams is a former military psychiatrist , who barely escaped an explosion with her life. She is setting into civilian life, when her past comes back to haunt her and a killer on her trail.
Asher James has worked his way up in the military into the special forces through old fashioned hard work, doing dangerous things that few could imagine, but he's been having trouble sleeping at night. So he goes to Brooke, because he remembers her from a mission in Afghanistan.
Together can they help each other, and stop the killers before it's too late?
Fast-paced, suspenseful new series from Lynette Eason. I didn't want to put in down and read it all in just two sittings. Asher is a very brave man who has faced down fear on many levels, I liked how he wanted to help Brooke and took it upon himself to help protect her.
Brooke has leaned on her faith through all the traumatic experiences that she has been through, she is passionate about her work, and wants her work to be meaningful. I admired her resilience and how she encouraged others to turn to their faith as well.
There was great relationship building throughout, Brooke and Asher had a unique understanding of each other because of their similar past experiences. There were many well developed side characters and a lot going on. I didn't want to put it down, as the pieces all fell satisfyingly into place. There was such a well balanced blend of relationship building, suspense, mystery, romance and faith. This fantastic read will not disappoint!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Asher James has just gotten out of the service and is having some serious nightmare problems. Brooke Adams was a military psychiatrist when Asher was in the service and he hopes to enlist her help now that he is home and she is in a private practice. Brooke is having some serious nightmares of her time in Afghanistan as well, but when Asher comes to her office and finds a dead woman his military training kicks in and he manages to escape the killer who is still in the office. But now the question is, why does someone want Brooke killed and WHO is that someone? Asher is determined to find out what is going on. Now both of their lives are in danger.
What a roller coaster this story was! So many twists and turns and so much evil exposed. Asher and Brooke have been drawn into quite a web of terrifying circumstances and they will stop at nothing to save the lives of many people, but who can they trust as the culprits seem to extend all the way to the top! I was so stressed reading this book that I had to put it down several times before I could continue! It was so exciting, heart-wrenching and fast-paced! One of Lynette Eason's best so far. If you like suspense, a bit of military flavor and some romance then definitely get this book!
Debut book in Lynette Eason's newest series, Danger Never Sleeps; and it definitely started the series off with explosions literally. Beginning in Afghanistan during the US-Afghan war Sgt Asher James finds his group in the middle of an IED followed by an explosion in a nearby cafe where he saves Military Psychiatrist Captain Brooke Adams. The action continues from there and peaks higher and higher until a final solution to all the things occurring in an Afghan Orphanage that connects to base personnel.
I have yet to be disappointed by any of Eason's suspense novels. Full of realistic characters and events this one really was top notch. Dealing with stolen body parts used for transplants, I never guessed the villain until nearly the end. Including many threads that all finally came together at the very end, I appreciated the light romance that played a nice background without overpowering the dramatic suspense. There were a couple of secondary characters that I can imagine taking main stage in the next book which I will definitely look forward to reading.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from Baker Publishing through NetGalley. Opinions are mine alone. I was not compensated for this review.
Title: Collateral Damage
Author: Lynette Eason
Series: Danger Never Sleeps book 1
Chapters: 29 plus epilogue
Pages:384
Genre: Christian Suspense
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Publisher: Revell
Lynette Eason has been my go-to for suspense and law enforcement novels. Now it looks like she’s going to be my go-to for military fiction in the Christian fiction market along Ronie Kendig. I didn’t know how I was going to feel about Collateral Damage because outside of Revolutionary war fiction I don’t tend to read military fiction as I’m scared that the authors not going to do their research or in my opinion not do justice to characters. But since I’ve loved Lynette Eason’s law enforcement suspense I was willing to give this new series a try and she really did her research.
The hero and heroine shows that there are no unwounded in war. That they all have scars just that some aren’t physical and they war can affect people differently.
I plan to continue the series and I look forward to the second book releasing this year.

Thanks to Net Galley for the Digital Arc. I have read all of Lynette Eason's books. I like the way she writes and this one is no different. Good story! I will recommend this to friends and give this one a 5 star.
Another wonderful series has been started with Collateral Damage. Thank you Lynette for writing stories that never fail to give readers suspense mixed in with romance.
I was so excited when I saw there was a new series by Lynette Eason. I am a big fan of hers, and knew I had to get my hands on this book. Eason took me on a wild ride, and I didn’t want to get off. I had no way of guessing what would happen next, but sure had fun trying to. Being an active military therapist would be so difficult. I couldn’t imagine knowing all the things that our military has to go through like she did. Brooke gave her everything until it seemed that she had nothing left. When an explosion shakes her world she knows it’s time to go home. The only problem is, suddenly home doesn’t feel safe either. Remembering Asher from their time overseas, she is surprised to see him show up at her practice. That is only the beginning of many twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. The abuse of power and the corruption will break your heart and take your breath away. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a one of a kind story. This book touched some heavy subjects including what little value some people place on orphans. I can’t wait to see what Eason writes next, but I know it will be good. I received a copy of this book from Revell Publishers and was in no way forced to post a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Lynette Eason has started her new series, Danger Never Sleeps, with a bang. I mean that figuratively and literally. Only a few pages in and an MRAP vehicle is hit by an RPG, taking out the entire crew. I believe the story as a whole will be a big hit as men and women alike can find something that draws them in, as if they are right there in the thick of the action. Suspense for the men, romance for the women, the story has an equal amount that I found appealing. Christian fiction at its best, the faith element is present without being pushy or overpowering, rather encouraging and uplifting. I enjoyed the story and was trying all the way through to figure out what was happening and who was behind it. The hero and heroine are Asher and Brooke, but so many others play key roles throughout as the scenes go back and forth from Afghanistan to the United States. The sad fact is that events similar to those spoken of in the story actually happen in our world. While enjoying a good read, we should never allow that to lull us into complacency. We need to pray faithfully for our law enforcement officers and military personnel who are faced with getting to the truth and bringing criminals to justice. I recommend this book and look forward to the next one in the series. The only good thing about having to wait for it is that I can catch up on the sleep I missed while sitting up late to finish reading this one.
I've read other books by Lynette Eason before (specifically the Blue Justice series and the Hidden Identity series). I just found this one okay. I didn't find it nearly as suspenseful or as developed as the prior books I've read. It was a quick read. Unfortunately, I just wasn't hooked and I don't believe I will be reading this particular series in the future.
Thank you #netgalley and #revell for the eARC.
Lynette Eason's new series, Danger Never Sleeps, has started off with a bang - yes, quite literally!
Collateral Damage will keep you up late reading because as expected - it's a page turner. Lynette Eason always delivers on her suspense & mystery. I thoroughly enjoyed the settings jumping back and forth from overseas to South Carolina. You could almost feel the emotion, energy and intenseness of the climate and surroundings. It brings to light the darkness and pain of being in war situations that leave so many with PTSD. Eason did a beautiful job of highlighting the healing that can happen when getting the necessary assistance of professionals in order to manage the pain.
I'm a big fan of strong female characters who have military careers. Not only does Eason do a great job of showing female strength, but she showcases incredible female relationships - no catty behavior in this book! I could write so much more as there are many more details I could highlight, but these are the ones that stood out to me. If you enjoy Colleen Coble, Irene Hannon or Dani Pettrey, you will enjoy Collateral Damage. This is a series that I will be waiting (not very patiently) for the next book to be released!
This book was such a great start to this new series by Lynette Eason! I had to stay up to finish reading this because I could not go to sleep without knowing how it would end. Asher and Brooke both served in Afghanistan and knew each other as Asher pulled Brooke out of the aftermath of an explosion. Now they are both back in the states and living their lives but both are dealing with the aftermath of serving and Brooke has unfinished business. Asher gets drawn in Brooke's life when he shows up at the office for his appointment and finds a woman dead and it turns out that Brooke was the target. Through their various connections they begin to try to piece together what is going on; however it is hard to see who to trust and who shouldn't be.
This book is fast-paced and Asher and Brooke are constantly looking over their shoulders and trying to stay ahead of those hunting them down and figuring out who all is after them. The horror of what is actually taking place with the children in the orphanage is unfortunately something that is real life and this was hard to read about, yet it is real and needs attention brought to that fact. Lynette weaves together these characters, their cases and perspectives together so nicely. I am anxiously awaiting for book #2 and more time with some of these characters.
I really liked how suspenseful and well written this book was. Several different points of view weave a web that isn't clear if or how it is connected until the end.
I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
Eason has done a good job combining nefarious actions in Afghanistan with a murder investigation in the States. While the two separate story lines might be puzzling at the beginning, the connection becomes evident as the plot progresses. The connection comes through women who knew each other in Kabul, two of whom have returned home.
I like Eason's way of including several issues in the novel. An important one is post traumatic stress. Brooke had counseled American soldiers in Kabul. Barely surviving a bombing, she is now in private practice but still deals with memories and some residual effects of the trauma. Another issue is friendship. Brooke finds a friendship nearly destroyed when she misinterprets the actions of another. Faith in God's protection is an important element of the plot as is a budding romance.
There is plenty of action in this novel. It starts with danger in Afghanistan and Brooke nearly being killed. Yet her return to the States does not guarantee safety as she soon finds herself in serious danger.
I enjoyed the novel. Eason brings the many elements together well and provides readers with plenty of suspense. This book is the first in a new series and I'll be watching for the next one.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Honorably discharged from the Army after an explosion nearly killed her, former military psychiatrist Brooke Adams has set up shop to help others--but her days of helping military personnel are over. She's got her own battles to fight from her time overseas, and she's not equipped to take on more. Former Army Special Ops Sergeant First Class Asher James could handle anything that war sent his way--terrorists, bombs, bullets. The only thing that scares him now is sleep. As the shadows close in, the nightmares begin.
Finally convinced that he needs help, Asher makes an appointment with a counselor, and Brooke is pressed by her boss to take him on. When he arrives at her office she isn't there--but a dead body is. Brooke is devastated when she walks in, and Asher is a conveniently strong shoulder to cry on. But she can't take him on as a client after sharing such an intimate and unprofessional moment, can she? And he's not sure he can handle sharing his deepest fears with such a beautiful woman.
When it becomes clear that Brooke was the real target of the attack--and that her secrets go even deeper than his own--Asher vows to protect her no matter what.
This is another great book by Ms. Eason. A great suspense that kept me reading long after I should have gone to bed. Both Asher and Brooke suffer from PTSD. Asher finally knows he needs help with his PTSD and makes an appointment with a counselor. I liked how we were shown what happened to Brooke and Asher to cause their PTSD.
As Brooke is running for her life, she is trying to figure out who is after her. Asher is doing everything in his power to protect her. They discover that a traitor is after them and it stems from the time they were in Afghanistan.
I highly recommend this book to all who like suspense.
I was given this book by Revell Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way..
