I'm a little late reviewing this book. Sometimes I take on more than I can chew! I do carry this title and the second book as well. It is popular with the seven to ten-year-old crowd. I always recommend graphic novels for reluctant readers to boost their confidence and to develop a love for books.
It is a huge hit! So huge I cannot keep it checked in. Kids love it. Teachers love it. Thank you for a good book that is not overwhelmed with potty humor.
I love John Patrick Green. I love to read everything he publishes. So hilarious. Lots of great "dad jokes" in here that kids will love.
A very entertaining graphic novel which will rise among the ranks of DOG MAN and DIARY OF A WIMPY KID. I laughed out loud more than once and I know my students will get a kick out it! There are so many solid puns in and jokes in this book that I am so excited to read the next books in the series. There's a bit of potty humor but nothing that is concerning in the slightest, in fact, I think it was actually well-done and really made me laugh.
I would fully recommend this to any kid who loved DOG MAN and is looking for the next hilarious graphic novel to fly through. Will absolutely be purchasing for my school library!
A fun new graphic novel series for kids. Lots of great puns and corny jokes that will definitely be appreciated by the target audience. I appreciated the jokes were more focused on the silly and less on the gross out humor. I can see this series growing into a popular one, much like Dog Man or Captain Underpants.
InvestiGators Brash and Mango are assigned to go undercover at a bakery and find out what happened to famous chef Gustavo Mustachio who has disappeared. But they are soon called away from that investigation for a more urgent case involving an explosion at the Science Factory. What happened to Gustavo Mustachio? What happened at the Science Factory? Are the two cases linked or do the InvestiGators have a whole bunch of cases to solve?
This starts off seeming like it is a pretty simple mystery but it gets more and more complex. It’s very well done so it isn’t ever confusing, but it is definitely not just an open and shut case. Brash and Mango are a good comedic and investigative team. The book is loaded with enough puns to make the pun-obsessed satisfied, but I didn’t feel like it got too cringe-worthy. The plot line is very imaginative as is the world that Green’s created here. I can see this appealing to lower grade readers all the way on up to middle schoolers. Some of the vocabulary may be a little tough for the lower graders, but with the help of the illustrations it should still be approachable. And with the way our middle schoolers are constantly asking me for new graphic novels, I may need this to keep the graphic novel devourers satisfied. (And it is sophisticated enough I don’t feel like they will think it is babyish.) Hand this to reluctant readers, mystery fans, and graphic novel fans. They’ll love you for it. Looking forward to more mysteries with this crime solving duo.
Notes on contents [based on the ARC]: No language issues. No sexual content. There’s a scene showing a cartoon version of a brain surgery (so not super realistic and not bloody). A person gets attacked by a were-creature (not gory, more funny) and turns into a strange object every time there’s breaking news. A creature falls into a vat of radioactive material and turns into a radioactive baked good.
I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is areas-alike to Dogman but with Gators! Lots of puns, gadgets and ridiculous circumstances make a fun mystery/adventure story. I know kids would check this out of my library for sure!
This was a very cute graphic novel, perfect for kids reading early chapter books. The Dog Man crowd will love it.
InvestiGators had me cracking up! I'm a huge fan of punny-humor, and this book has plenty of that! Brash and Mango are a great investigative duo, and I loved their antics. There are also some wonderfully bizarre side characters, like a doctor who was bitten by a helicopter; I'm going to be thinking about that for awhile. I'm hooked, and I can't wait for book 2! Fans of Dog Man will sink their teeth into InvestiGators!
I need this book to be on my library's shelves yesterday. I kept laughing out loud while reading InvestiGators and surprising my coworkers. I love the sheer amount of puns and just plain goofiness. InvestiGators is what I wanted Dog Man to be when I first read it (I know kids love it and I always make sure to have at least 6 copies of each volume for my library, but I find Dog Man weird and disconcerting). That said, hand this to any fan of Dog Man and they will eat it up!
