Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for my copy to review.
This is a first for me as for Natasha Preston's books because I've really liked all of her other books but this one just fell flat for me. I wanted to DNF it a couple of times because it's just so slow. I honestly thought it would pick up but it didnt and nothing really goes down until the last few chapters. It wasnt really thrilling or suspenseful to me. I was kinda surprised by the positive reviews saying it was fast paced. Ivy said she was a good problem solver but she didnt really solve any problems or confront the situation. Most things could have been taken care of easily if she just wouldn't so overly paranoid.
Whenever there is a title such as "The Twin" you know this is going to be a creepy thriller. I could not put it down as soon as I started it! I absolutely loved the way this was written and am very happy that I was able to read this. Bravo!
This was a great story that follows twin sisters that have been separated since their parents divorced, One twin living with each parent. After their mom dies suddenly, Iris comes to live with Ivy and their dad. The story follows the twins and the challenges of settling into life after the huge changes of losing a parent and living together again.
Ivy isn't going crazy. She just can't convince anyone of that. Ever since her mother died, things have been odd. Ivy's twin sister, Iris, comes to live with them when mysterious and sinister events start to unfold. Ivy realizes that Iris is slowly succeeded and turning everyone against Ivy. Now she must work alone to figure out the truth behind her mother's death.
I enjoyed reading this book, my first book by Natasha Preston. Thank you Netalley for an arc copy for an honest review.
This book was crazy! It was one of those reads where you see what's happening and want to jump in the story and tell the character "Watch out!" The idea of someone manipulating all those around you so they start to turn against you and when you warn them they think you're losing it is scary enough, but when it's your identical twin sister it takes the creepiness to a whole other level. Ivy is just trying to live her life after her mom dies, keep up with her friends, boyfriend, and swimming but can't shake the feeling that Iris is slowly pushing her out and taking over. I felt so bad for her, being alienated and not having anyone believe her. The ending was not what I expected and I had to take a night to process my feelings about it. I kind of hoped it would be different, but also it was fitting to the story.
I was totally sucked into this and it goes by quickly. Get ready for some mind games!
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's for the opportunity to read!
The Twin is another haunting and thrilling read by Natasha Preston! I've been a fan of the authors work for some time now and always get excited when I realize she's writing another book! Her novels are like candy to me and I easily devour them in one sitting. This particular book reminded me of a horror movie I recently watched so it was extra exciting! I highly recommend it.
This was the first ARC that I've received that I was familiar with the author beforehand. I actually have a couple of her other books sitting on my shelf but I haven't been able to get to them yet (due to my out of control TBR). This was a solid 4/5 star read for me and if the ending hadn't felt a little rushed and there weren't some issues with some swimming terminology, I would have probably given it 5/5 stars. I swam in high school, so when she said that they jumped off the diving board for their races or start practice that's not quite right . . . they're called starting blocks. Also, the "hats" they wear are called swim caps.
Ivy finds out that her twin sister, Iris, is trying to push her out of her own life--and might be responsible for their mother's death.
Above is the description that caught my attention to request this book. I mean, who wouldn't find that intriguing? Ivy and Iris's parents divorced when they were young and Ivy stayed with their dad while Iris moved out with their mom. They still spent time with each other but as they got older it became less and less. I won't get into any specifics, but Iris is not someone to mess with because she is always one step ahead of you.
I enjoyed reading this book even though I felt like it was a slow build and then it seemed to rush to the end. It was a pretty quick read and I can't wait to get to her other books that have been sitting on my shelf. Happy reading!
The Twin is an young adult psychology thriller by Natasha Preston. Twins Ivy and Iris choose to live with different parents when they divorce. The death of thier mother has them both living at home with thier dad. Things begin to happen that concerns Ivy but noone seems to take her concerns seriously. The plot was easy to.figure but the ending was not what I was expecting. A very enticing book.
Thanks to netgalley for allowing me this book to read for an honest review.
4.5 Stars
I am shook by this ending. I have read most of Natasha Preston's books and have enjoyed them. The Twin was no different. It was full of drama and intensity and had me anxious for our MC Ivy. Ivy's twin Iris, comes to live with her and her dad after their mom does in a running "accident". But soon after Iris arrives, she starts manipulating situations and relationships in order to take over Ivy's life. While it started a little slow, the last 2/3 is heart pounding and fast. After each chapter you're left wanting Ivy to get her life back. I really felt for Ivy and her perfectionist and anxious nature. She worked her ass off for her life and now it was being ripped away from her. I can't imagine what that would be like to be terrified and have no one believe you. The ending was very Natasha Preston like, in that it ends without a resolution and just kinda drops off. You're left wondering what the freaking flying frack just happened. It does read like a Lifetime movie at points, but this was a nice change of pace from my usual reads. Thanks for @netgalley for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
Ivy and Iris are identical twins. Ivy lives with her dad, Iris lives with her mom. Each of the girls spend time with the other parent during breaks from school.
When their mother dies tragically, Iris comes to live with Ivy and their father.
Ivy is trying hard to get into Stanford the college of her choice. She is anchor of her swim team, a straight A student, has a wonderful relationship with her father, has two best friends and is dating Ty the football quarterback. Her life is perfect. She also works extremely hard at everything. She studies very hard and practices her swimming every chance she gets.
Ivy is concerned when Iris moves in. Iris is having a hard time with their mother's death. Iris doesn't talk about their mother at all.
When they go back to school, Iris ends up having all the same classes as Ivy. She also has taken over her friends. Ivy understands Iris is trying to find her place at school. Somehow it seems like she is stepping in and taking Ivy's place from her.
When a test is stolen and high concentration of chlorine is found in the pool, Ivy is blamed. Suddenly her world is crashing down around her. Her dad doesn't believe her innocence. Her boyfriend doubts her, even her best friends have deserted her.
It is definitely apparent that she has been set up. Her life as she knew it is gone. What more can happen? How much worse can her life become?
If she only knew, this is only the beginning.
A psychological thriller that leaves you shuddering in your shoes!
Excellent!
Overall, it was an interesting story, but the ending left me feeling very unsettled- and not in a good way. I didn’t like how there wasn’t really any sort of resolution.
I loved this book, I have bags under my eyes from finishing it last night. It made me so anxious and I knew just how Ivy felt when she was going through all this. Its terrible not being able to help her. I kept thinking what is going to happen next! Crazy book!
I binge read @authornatashapreston books last year and was so excited to learn that she has a new book coming out this year. I couldn't put it down. I was completely hooked and of course the ending was great! It was an intense, fast read and I loved it.
I tried so hard to like this novel. Natasha Preston is one of my favorite authors in the world - I've read all of her YA thrillers multiple times, I own all of them, and have bought multiple copies for friends. I've finished every single YA thriller she has released, even if it wasn't my absolute favorite. I just could not get into The Twin.
I stopped reading at about 55%. At this point, absolutely nothing has happened. I can tell that the premise of the novel is supposed to be that Iris is trying to intrude and disrupt Ivy's life.... But at 55% all she has done is the normal annoying things every single sister/popular high school girl has done (stealing clothes, causing drama between friends, pretending she's doing nothing wrong). Yes, I recognized those things as somewhat weird, but they're all things I did in high school. Does that make me interesting enough to be the antagonist of a young adult thriller? Not really.
Natasha Preston is known for her young adult thrillers that take you to the edge of your seat. She's taken us on a who-dun-it murder in a cabin in the woods, the worlds creepiest cellar, a literal torture building, AND MORE. I expected more than just high school drama with The Twin.
*I will try to finish this novel again when it is released, hopefully in audiobook form. I will update my review on Goodreads when/if this happens.*
This is a decent YA psychological thriller.
Twin sisters have been separated for the past 6 years. Reunited by the death of their mother, the sisters don't possess the bond typical of twins. This is a classic 'bad seed' scenario. Ivy is the good twin and Iris is the bad twin who is hellbent on taking Ivy's place. Who will win in the end?
This was a fun read and I enjoyed the ending, but I didn't find Iris to be that sinister of a character. I guess I was expecting someone more nefarious and, though her actions throughout the novel were dark, I didn't find her to be particularly frightening even if she was calculating.
This is a simple book. It’s more of a mystery then a thriller. None the less, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed The Cellar, more.
Twisty with an end I definitely did not expect! I felt so sorry for Ivy and how manipulative her twin Iris was. This book definitely shows you that sometimes you should be wary of those closest to you. When twins Ivy and Iris mother dies, Iris moves back in with Ivy and their dad. Ivy is looking forward to being close to her twin again, until she isn’t. Iris doesn’t just want everything Ivy has, she wants to be Ivy.
In the novel The Twin, two separated twins, Ivy and Iris, are brought together by the unexpected death of their mother. But soon Ivy begins to release her twin Iris isn't as innocent as she seems.
I love Natasha Preston. The Cellar is still one of my favorite books. The premise for this book is extremely interesting and it is very believable that the narrator is a 16-year old girl. I thoroughly enjoy dark and creepy books, and the mystery is just an added bonus.
Unfortunately, I found this book extremely predictable. I knew by chapter ten what the outcome of this novel would be. I continued reading, hoping I was wrong. But alas, I was not. I found myself trudging through to the end of this book. The plot does not pick up until the last 9 or so chapters of the book.
I really wanted to enjoy this book but it was about as entertaining as detention.
The blurb for The Twin sounded utterly fascinating as I’m always on board when it comes to creepy, evil twins. Plus I know this author for the bestselling series The Cellar (admittedly I haven’t read said series but I figure if you reach the NYT bestselling list then you can’t possibly be a bad writer). So what could possibly go wrong? Apparently, a lot.
I’m not here to bash a book or an author, but this book truly moves at a snail’s pace. Sure, there’s some gaslighting by Iris (the supposedly evil twin) but it doesn’t really escalate till you’re 75% in the book. I was tempted many times to simply give up on this book, but I only prevailed cause reviewers who made it through claimed it was worth the wait.
Sure, Iris acts strange and like Ivy, we’re left questioning her strange bi-polar personality, but other than that, we can’t see her as being purely evil. And for being a YA, it is very tame compared to other edgier books I’ve read in the genre. I’m also baffled by all the reviews that claimed this was a fast-paced thriller. Using short sentences and barely any description doesn’t easily equate to fast-paced. And there’s some suspense but then again since not much happens that I found to be too alarming, it doesn’t really elevate the stakes at hand.
Is Iris really trying to take Ivy’s place? And if so, why? That’s the central question and it would be an interesting one if it had merely moved at a faster pace or had some truly terrible things happen to Ivy. Now I know that this author used to post their writing on Wattpad (I’m not judging since I do enjoy A.V. Geiger’s books a lot and she used to be on there as well) but I can’t help but feel as though Preston’s writing is too simplistic and that her thrillers aren’t even on par with middle-grade thriller books (I mean a lot more happens in a Goosebumps book than what occurred throughout this one).
The dialogue was a bit stilted in this book, especially anytime Iris spoke. I get that she’s weird but the way she speaks doesn’t even sound like a normal teen or one that is popular anyway.
I really wanted to love this book or at least enjoy the ride, but instead, I was bored witless and wish I could’ve been Ivy binge-watching Riverdale instead.
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Children's for this copy of The Twins. The opinions are my own.
When their parents divorced the twins Ivy and Iris were split up, Ivy went to live with her father, Iris with her mother, but when the woman dies in an accident they are reunited and Iris has to live with Ivy and their father.
Ivy and Iris couldn't be more different. Ivy is logical, Iris is more emotional, Ivy is a swimmer, Iris a cheerleader, Ivy prefers small group of friends, Iris seeks the popularity.
Ivy is trying to deal with her mother's death, focusing on her healing, her swimming, friends and boyfriend and trying to be close to Iris, since they lived separately for so long. She's ready to do anything to help her sister feeling at home. But soon she starts to realize Iris isn't not what she seems. She acts weird, butting in bewteen Ivy and her best friends, using her clothes, slowly taking over her life. Soon everyone are besotted by her and Ivy becomes suspicious. Why is Iris taking out on her? What is she doing? Realizing her sister is bent to take over her life and friends, Ivy begins to wonder, too, about their mother's death and her safety. Is she paranoid and overthinking? Or is there something really wrong with Iris? Is she in danger?
The twin is a chilling psychological thriller that left me breathless and pushed me to read faster because I needed to know how would it end, what would happened next. It's the first book I've read by Natasha Preston, but I like her writing style. Told in first person, by Ivy's POV it's easy to get involved in the story, worrying with her, thinking about her sister and her life and twists, following Ivy in her investigations.
Ivy's situation made me so angry and I really hated Iris and her manipulative side, even though she's a great character, a psychopath. I was a bit disappointed reading how none, even Ivy's father and closest friends couldn't believe her. How far a jealous person could go. The ending frustrated me a lot, because, even though it's an open one and usually I liked them, this one left me so angry and sad. Iris is cunning, smart and cruel, but I like her character a lot, even though she's the "villain". Overlooking my feelings about the ending, the story is a gripping one, full of surprises, mysteries and a beautiful psychological thriller. A really scary one.
A perfect thriller for the YA audience!!!!
Spoilers!
She is the perfect twisted sister, I hope there is another book to follow up like she has done before.....Because I really want to see Iris get what she deserves. I thought Ivy was smarter than that!!! Someone else should have been able to put the pieces together.
