A great resource for artists, whether experience or a beginner. There is plenty to learn from this book and I think it is also great for kids.
I was sent this book in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
What a delightful book! This book is by French artist Robert Lament featuring his step by step instructions and detailed but simple drawings of how to draw over 150 different animals from domestic to wild animals. I adore this book, and even though the sketches are from the 1920's and 1930's they are fantastic and Robert Lament's step by step tutorials really have survived the test of time.
This book would make an amazing gift to keep for any child over 8 and even adults.
Each page has a page next to it for you to try the same drawing shown, step by step.
What a delightful and educational book! I recall having these books in art class when I was little and obsessing over how to draw a dog. This book brings back all of that nostalgia with sophisticated drawings that challenge the artist to transform shapes into realistic cartoons. I absolutely adore it and can't wait to buy it for my nieces and nephews. (But lets be real, I'm the one who's going to use it the most for my bullet journal!).
The Draw Any Animal Book is a compilation of instructions for drawing animals that were written in the ‘20s and ‘30s for a children’s weekly newspaper. The drawings consist of simple shapes and lines that form into a variety of animals, such as dogs, rabbits, elephants and even insects.
The step-by-step illustrations are easy to follow, with many consisting of only a few steps. Since it is fairly simple, this is something many children and adults alike could master. I’m definitely not an artist, but I managed to complete several drawings and it was fun to try.
For someone who likes to doodle and draw, this might be the perfect book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
Some books withstand the test of time and this is one of them! The Draw Any Animal Book is a compilation of step-by-step lessons written by a French artist in the 1920s and1930s for a weekly children’s paper.
This is a simple book chock full of different animals that you will be able to draw in no time. Seven basic shapes and the use of geometric lines figure in to each of the 150+ animals for which there are typically 3-6 steps illustrating how to draw it. In a few of the lessons, there seems to be a couple of steps missing, like with the peacock, but for the most part they appear to be complete. There are all sorts of animals included, such as many varieties of birds, big cats, ocean creatures, insects, and farm animals. There are also unusual animals that are not typically found in drawing books, such as quail, pheasant, raptor, peacock, hyena, antelope, and slugs.
What is really nice about these lessons is that the drawing steps are very clear and are the focus in the book. There is very little text to distract the budding artist — sometimes a drawing tip and at other times a brief bit of trivia. A very unusual and compelling feature of this book is that Lambry illustrates how-to-draw the same animal from several different poses - for example, a profile, from overhead, straight on and from behind. For example, dogs include 5 different poses and for ducks there are 7 different ones. Also, there are practice pages included for each animal.
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group - Quarry Books and NetGalley for a temporary advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
This is a drawing guide book which breaks down the animal into basic shapes in 3 or 4 steps. It has a very comprehensive collection of animals, including some categories rarely found in art books. There are rodents, weasels, insects etc. in with the tigers, lions, and bears. On some of the complicated animals step 2 to step 3 is a huge leap and it is hard to see everything that was done. Even with that, great book. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for letting me review a digital ARC.
In The Draw Any Animal Book by Robert Lambry readers learn how to turn shapes into realistic animals in just a few simple steps. The instructions are clear and concise and easy to follow along with. The book has a fun vintage feel.
The range of animals and the level of simplicity is a strength in this book. I also love the space to try it out yourself next to each animal entry. Another bonus point Is the great range of options for different birds to draw!
I will say, like many how to draw books, sometimes the images jump to a level of completion too fast from the previous version. It’s like the last step is frequently rushed and allllll these details get added on the last step. Kinda ruins the point of the step by step concept if you ask me... I see this a lot in these type of books though.
Cute, interactive, useful, and as I noted the great range of animals is cool!
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is an okay book with a huge selection of animals, insects, fish and other creatures to draw. Instructions are super simple, with little text. The animals are all drawn with that classic "make a triangle and then a circle here and then two parallel lines and then erase all this part and then add that" kind of style, instead of showing you how to just draw the basic shape of an animal. Some of the animals look really realistic while others just looked off to me.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.
This book teaches how to create simple but accurate line drawings of a variety of animals. Text was only used when he needed to point out how he created a distinctive feature of the animal. Each lesson was basically 3 to 5 drawn steps showing how to create each animal, and the steps were clear and easy to follow. Common animals were often shown from different angles – like the side, front, and back – and in different poses. He covered around 150 animals, from cats and dogs to reptiles, rodents, rabbits, turtles, bugs, fish, and many more. His method basically uses simple lines to get the correct proportions in place and then he added distinctive details so that a person seeing the line drawing can tell which animal it is supposed to be. Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to draw simple line drawings of animals, especially children and crafters.
At first I honestly have to say I was initially pretty disappointed in this book but then I realized what makes it fantastic is the shear simplicity of it. There is little to no explanations just concise and detailed drawings that focus on the basics of 10 shapes to create a variety of animals with a touch of trivia mixed in. I feel this book easy enough for beginners but is perfect for all ages. I think this is a gem for those wanting to learn to draw animals and will greatly improve your technique. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
The Draw Any Animal Book by Robert Lambry. Very clear and concise examples and instructions. Can finally draw at least a couple of pictures of animals. Will be able to draw more with some practice. A wide variety of examples.
Many Thanks to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
A great book with clear and simple instructions , great step by step illustrations and creates great results. I am a beginner so I can tell you it’s perfect for absolute beginners completely honestly. A lovely addition of facts about the animals this is a wonderful book for any age wanting to take their first step into art.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
This is an excellent little book for learning how to draw animals in a simple way. Despite it being so simple the animals are realistic and a great starting point. There are several different compositions for each animal using variations of techniques but all easily done by a complete beginner. I like the way everything is done in pictures and there are very few words. It is a perfect book for all ages, and has certainly stood the test of time considering the author was born in 1902 and died in 1932.. This new version of his work allows for the reader to try out their own drawings within the book.
The subhead of the book is pretty much perfect description of it. I was expecting more doodle-style drawings, but I was surprised that the animals are drawn very realistically. The introduction shows simple shapes that are useful when drawing animals and then the book shows each animal step-by-step. Only few animals could have a few more steps because, for example the peacock is a step-by-step how to draw the body and the tail appears out of nowhere. But other than that, I have no other complains, the book is nice, and I think it would make a great gift for anyone who is starting to draw regardless of age. The trivia facts about some of the animals is a nice detail.
In "The Draw Any Animal Book", Robert Lambry shows how to turn 10 different shapes into over 150 different animals. There are step-by-step illustrations for each design, and practice pages to work on your skills.
