Took me a while to really get into this one, and when I finally did I have to say it was just okay. Caroline was strong and true to herself, never looking back and regretting the sacrifices she made. Hugh, well, I still don't know what to think of him. Kind of a cold fish. Anyway, mystery solved and on to the next one.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to read this arc.
I absolutely loved this book. It's the kind of story that draws you in right from the start until the end. Caroline and Hugh are both amazing characters and their story is quite intriguing. They both have the same goal of finding answers regarding the ex of Caroline's sister. This book has mystery and romance, a perfect mixture. I'd definitely recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a lighthearted mystery to read.
This one had me hooked from the dedication. I couldn't put this one down. I liked that the character of Caroline felt real--almost as if we were just two gals sitting around talking about being a princess and escaping a murder plan. You know, typical girl stuff.
I also liked that this one was part of a series, but I didn't need the first one for this one to make sense. The author embedded a good amount of information to help the reader.
Loving the mix of suspense and romance! After Caroline renounces her title and then loses her husband in a tragic way, she goes into hiding – unwilling to go back to her family after they disowned her for her marriage. But when her sister’s fiancé, who was presumed dead, shows up asking for her help, while confused she wants to figure out what is going on. At the same time, her old bodyguard, and previous crush Hugh shows up, and he clues Caroline into what exactly is going on with her sister’s fiancé and the danger she is in. As Caroline and Hugh work together to put together the pieces of the story and the reasoning behind what is going on, while also running for their safety, we see if Hugh can continue to deflect Caroline’s feelings or if she finally breaks down his walls. I was somewhat confused throughout the book, but everything ended up clarifying itself in the end. I really loved Caroline’s character because she was so strong and unwilling to go running back to those who disowned her for wanting to live her own life in the first place. I also really enjoyed the suspense and mystery of trying to figure out what her sister’s fiancé was doing and the reasoning behind it, and the connection between them all had me reeling! Overall it was definitely an enjoyable book!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Fast-paced with plenty of mystery and a touch of suspense, there’s a lot to like about this royal romance. However, two things held me back from the loving it. The first thing is that I had no idea that this is actually the second book in a series, and isn’t a complete standalone. There were definitely moments where I felt like I was missing something, and things aren’t completely wrapped up at the end of the book. Secondly, the story is told completely from our heroine’s perspective, and while I liked our hero, when the book was over I still didn’t know much about him. He’s the strong, silent type, so not hearing his side of the story made the romance even more one-sided. Had these two issues been resolved, this would’ve easily been a 4 or 5 star read for me.
The story follows Caroline, a self-described “disgraced princess, widow, and recluse” who is hiding out after the sudden death of her husband. She’s tried to distance herself from royal life, but gets pulled back in with the reappearance of someone from her sister’s past. Things get even more complicated when her former bodyguard (and teenage crush), Hugh, appears as well. Ten years have done little to diminish her attraction to Hugh, but he’s never seemed to reciprocate her feelings. As Caroline and Hugh work together to piece together the mystery, old feelings surface and Hugh isn’t quite as immune to Caroline’s charms as he was in the past.
The writing is solid, blending some humor and lightness in with the suspenseful aspects of the story. It’s a clean read with no explicit scenes and a slow burn romance. It took a little while for Caroline to win me over, but I was definitely rooting for her and Hugh in the end. Without Hugh’s perspective, the reader is left to make assumptions about his feelings toward her (or agree with whatever Caroline is thinking). Getting to know Hugh better would’ve taken this story to the next level, and making the reader aware that this is the second book in a series might help them make an informed decision about whether they’d like to read the series in order. I’d definitely read more from this author in the future, and appreciate receiving an ARC via NetGalley. I am voluntarily leaving a review of this royal romance.
It is told from Caroline's POV and it is a bit like she is talking to us at times - this is a writing style I tend to enjoy especially with ROM Com's for me it creates a stronger connection with the mc
Caroline seems to have a lot of secrets hiding in her closet and as the story progresses it looks as though if they were to be exposed not only might they be damaging to her personally (royal image and all that jazz) but they also might hurt those she cares about.
Curious it seems by nature and maybe even a bit of nurture (wait till you meet moms- heck grandma even) Caroline tends to waltz right into trouble even when she is trying to be helpful. I did find her various predicaments quite amusing as well as her inner monologues.
I had to remind myself at times she was raised as a princess so her "real world" skills are not quite present? Putting it mildly
Then we have Hugh - Hugh is a cautious man - A man of few words.
A big bear of a man that I would definitely cuddle with on a cold Dresdin evening... Just saying
I liked that he tried to do what he perceived as the right thing even if he eventually figured out that he didn't have a chance of following the book when it came to his Princess
The story line was pretty solid and kept an entertaining pace, for the most part, occasionally there was a bit of a lull or something occurred that pulled me out of the story. The end was a bit abrupt but it did seem to tie up the story line ... for now.
Since I did not read the first in this series I did have to put the pieces together (which was quite easy) regarding Leah and now I am curious about her story.
The copy I read was comp
The bodyguard and forbidden romance trope in one book was a sure sign this book was going to be good and it definitely didn't disappoint! It was more eventful than I thought it was going to be but it had managed to balance the romance and action so well, it's impressive.
Okay so it was a bit slow to start like it took me a few chapters to get into the story enough that I cared to read more. However the middle and end of the book are amazing! The story really picks up and gets going. You start getting anxious to find out what is next.
A sweet fairytale story. Caroline is the black sheep of the royal family and is recovering from the death of her family. Hugh is the man who had broken her heart and is once again her bodyguard. The story is filled with multiple layers of intrigue between the different characters. The plot is filled with plenty of surprises and plot twists. As they continue to run from danger they also get to know each and find themselves and love.
I am a sucker for a good bodyguard romance, and this one had all of the elements I like. There was lots of intrigue and action to keep things interesting, and the story moved quickly. I liked the romance between Caroline and Hugh, and there was a good amount of tension. Hugh is sort of the strong silent type, so I think I would have preferred this book in 3rd person to get more insight into him. I do look forward to reading more from this author. 3.5 stars!
*I received an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
This book is part of a series, which isn't indicated on Goodreads or on the information listed on NetGalley, this isn't an issue when reading the book, but it would be information I would like to see listed so I can find related books.
There are substantial similarities to the British Royal Family (BRF), in fact, it's dedicated to Harry and Meghan which nearly put me off as I am not a fan of that relationship. Still, it is not a reimaging of the British Family. Yes, there are paparazzi issues, and some of the scandals did affect the BRF, mother's affair with a horse trainer, divorced parents, questions of paternity, etc.. Still, the main characters are not similies to the current crop of Royals.
I stayed up well into the night to finish this book, the story was gripping, I loved Caroline as a character, she was the peacekeeper in the family, and she followed her heart. There was plenty of intrigue and romance. I think if there had been dual POV or at least a few insights into Hugo's thinking, it would have really tipped this book into 5 stars. I wanted to know more about him, how he felt about all that went on with Caroline.
This was a great read, and I am definitely going to look into the other books that feature the Drieden family. I anticipate more will be forthcoming as the book ended in a cliffhanger, not about our current couple but a set up for another member of the family.
I received an arc of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was so excited to get a copy of this one after enjoying Emory's debut so much, and it did not disappoint! Caroline and Hugh's chemistry was arguably better (to me) than Thea and her love interest (whose name escapes me) from the first book. I like Emory's unique blend of suspenseful-spy-mystery-rom-com and haven't read anything quite like it. This was a fun, easy read from start to finish and I hope for more of this series in the future!
I really wanted to like this book, and to me it fell a little bit flat. The writing was good I just couldn't connect to the characters as much as I wanted to!
The Royal Bodyguard is a mystery/romance follow up to The Royal Runaway. This continues the story of the royal family of Dreiden. While the first book focused on Princess Thea, The Royal Bodyguard follows the recently widowed (and disowned) Princess Caroline. Caroline has gone into hiding, but soon finds herself in the midst of a cat-and-mouse game with her sister's presumed dead fiancé. Caroline and a familiar person from her past, a palace bodyguard, try to unwind what is happening and stop harm from coming to the royal family. Hints in the last chapters of the book suggest another installment of this family's saga is coming soon!
I received an ARC of this via Net-Galley.
The Royal Runaway was spectacular and this follow up is just as good! Just a great story and characters! Can’t wait for more!
Okay so firstly a huge thanks to Netgalley and Entangled Publishing for this Advance Reader's Copy.
I haven't read the first book in this series ' The Royal Runaway' so I had no idea what I was getting into but suprisingly I liked this one plenty. This book starts with princess Carolina of Drieden who was exiled from her own country when she broke rules and disgraced her family by running away with a race car driver Stavros. On the begining note we get to know that her stort marriage was not a happy one and her husband dies a few days sometime after leaving her under media scrutiny. Since then the princess went in hidding and writes expose under a pen name. She was in Lake Como when she encounters her sister's ex-fiance who was supposed to be dead. I didn't know the story here or whats going on but neither did Caroline. So when her blast from the past, her former royal bodyguard,Hugh reappears into her life, they unite in their search of Christian. So thus begins their adventures all over Europe which was really fun and adventurous and full of mystery and humor. I really like the ending and a third book was definately hinted!(for all Lindsay Emory). I was really surprised how I enjoyed this book and how quickly I finished reading it. Really really awesome and fantastic narration and plot twist with adorable characters thats gonna make your day.
Anyways, highly recommended and I loved reading this! Coming out on Nov. 11.
Happy reading.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Entangled/Amara Publishing for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. Is this part of a series? I sort of felt like I was missing information. I loved Caroline, her spunk. Didn't really understand the whole thing with Christian?? The grandmother's were hilarious and annoying!! COomplications, unexpected situations, and why the need to keep blowing up and lighting fires?? But I must admit it held my attention. 3.5 stars
Caroline is a deposed princess from Dresden. Her grandmother the Queen disinherited her when she eloped with a race car driver. Now a widow in hiding, Caroline is stunned to come across the supposedly dead former fiancé of her sister the crown princess. This meeting is the beginning of a mysterious and dangerous adventure across Europe.
Hugh has spent much of his adult life in service as a body guard to the royal family of Dresden. Much of that time has been spent guarding Princess Caroline, with whom he has been secretly in love with for years. Her life is in danger, and Hugh is determined to protect her at any cost.
Can Hugh protect Caroline with her fighting him every step of the way and will the two of them ever be able to admit their feelings for each other?
I absolutely loved The Royal Runaway so I was thrilled to receive this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book was told from Caroline's (the disowned princess's) point of view. I immediately loved Caroline and was drawn into the story. Stavros, the race car driver Caroline ran off, with was killed in a car accident early on in the novel. Caroline retreats from the world and is secluded in Lake Como when she runs into Christian, the supposedly dead ex-fiance of her sister, of all people. Caroline soon learns that several other people are after Christian, including her former bodyguard and first love, Hugh and she is the missing piece to finding him. Caroline and Hugh reluctantly team up to find Christian and sparks fly from early on. This story has romance, humor, intrigue and some mystery. It was really fun to join Caroline and Hugh on their adventure throughout Europe. The Royal Bodyguard also feature's some favorite characters from the first novel but can be read as a standalone as well. The ending sets up perfectly for a third book and I can't wait!
I'm a fan of Princess/Bodyguard romances and The Royal Bodyguard looked to be an interesting twist on the trope since Caroline is no longer a princess and Hugh hasn't been her bodyguard for years. And I did enjoy the chemistry between the two of them. I loved all the action in the story. I also thought Caroline's narration was interesting, her use of things like "/sarcasm font/" giving the sense that you're reading something she wrote herself. All of those things kept me turning the pages long after my bedtime.
But I was confused by the timeline. Caroline's sense of alienation from her family makes it seem like she's been gone much longer than she has. And I was never clear on what exactly Christian had done when he left Thea or how other characters may have connected to his plans. The resolution feels rushed and the big reveals glossed over.
I think some of my confusion is because The Royal Bodyguard is actually the second book in Emory's Runaway Royals series. It's not labeled that way because the previous book was from a different publisher. Had I read Thea's book first I might have had a better understanding of the backstory. I wish more effort had been made to ensure this one would stand alone. In fact, I felt the ending might be setting up Thea's book next before I did some research.
In the end, The Royal Bodyguard is an action movie sort of romance novel - it's a lot of fun as long as you don't think too much about the plot.
