Ashley and Connal definitely had chemistry and it worked for them throughout the book. What they didn't have was effective or good communication. They each held back far too long to be acceptable and had unvoiced expectations unless they were being upset by those expectations not being met. For their poor communication alone I docked a whole star from that review.
That being said, I found the overall story engaging, the writing was inspiring and interesting, the characters were solid and relatable while still managing to be both annoying and wonderful. I'm a fan of this author's style and I find their MC's to be real, flawed, and earnest; they are the type of characters you root for and shake your fist at.
This is a book I'd happily recommend, it did the tropes and genres proud.
Some Like it Plaid by Angela Quarles grabbed me from the start. I enjoyed the tine period. I enjoyed the location. I enjoyed the characters. I enjoyed it all. Their romance wasn't an insta thing. It had to grow... along with respect and understanding of how different their expectations really are of one another. It was more believable this way. They're adorable, and they're both so darn stubborn too which added to the funness. Whenever there's a mix of humor, drama, and some steamy romance like this... you can sign me up!
I started this book quite a while ago and put it down because I was struggling to find a connection between the leads. I actually loved the time travel aspect, and I'm usually down for a good historical, but what keeps me turning that page is the chemistry between the leads. I struggled with feeling it, and in turn, it made their relationship feel off kilter. So hence, my middle of the road rating - I didn't fall in love, but I didn't hate it either.
This was an okay read for me and I thought it would be better. Time travel romance. filled with some buried humor but just too long to get moving and I never really felt any connection between Connall and Ashley. I liked it.
This is my first book by Angela Quarles and very much not my last, I love discover new to me authors and even more some one who writes with a splash of humor and lot of great romance. This was such a fun read for me and one I needed, since I've been sucked into a lot more serious contemporary drama, I needed some fun fantasy and great writing.
Some Like It Plaid follows Ashley Miller who responds to a craigslist ad that seriously take a strange turn. One minutes she thinks shes going on a new adventure that she surely needs with a mysterious and drop dead gorgeous man, off to Scotland, then sucked into the past where Google and computer definitely don't exist. Now she's married, again, and to her mysterious highlander Connall, living in a tribe that women seem to be there for only certain reason, and dangerous enemies knocking at their doors. Ashley however is a breathe of fresh air for the tribe and a whole lot to handle for Connall, so their in for one heck of a roller coaster.
Ashley is such an awesome character, I had a blast following her in her insane journey to the past. I loved how she took her life skills in her time to figure out how to help the people she starts to grow close too. Her sassyness with her husband Connall, is super entertaining, they have some insane chemistry but she keeps him on his toes. She also brings a lot of "woman" touches to how the tribe women can help and do things their own way. In the end its a heck of a journey for her and I feel she takes it in stride, way more that I would of.
Connall is all alpha male, his tribe has gone through a terrible loss of women and children and he take the guidance of their tribe druid to bring home a wife. I felt for this guy, e had no idea what he was getting into bringing and woman from our time to his. It was a learning curve and good one. I love how he learned from Ashley and how he wanted to make her happy.
Overall this was a great light read and something that any fantasy, time-travel romance lover would enjoy.
Ahhhhh this was just such a great read. I just didn't want this book to end and I was sad to turn the last page. I'm so excited to see what's next from this author.
Time travel. Hot Highlanders. Steamy scenes. A fun story.
These are the things that Some Like it Plaid give us. I was really charmed by this book. It was a fun romp into Scotland. It reminded me a bit of Outlander but a less involved version.
Character development was a bit rushed but it did not take away from the story or the love that developed between Ashley and Connall. They worked on a lot of topics that are very relevant when it comes to relationships. Respect and trust are absolutely important. I also loved that this book reflected on women’s rights. LOVED it.
This is the perfect book to cuddle up with by the fire and with a whiskey in hand. It will definitely give you some warmth.
When Ashley Miller sees a Craigslist ad for an all-expense paid vacation to Scotland with a handsome Highland “escort,” she’s all over it. Worn out from working two jobs to pay off the debts her scam artist ex-husband left her with, she just needs a friggin’ break already. Rolling, misty mountains of the Scottish Highlands, here she comes! But one minute she’s sipping a latte and the next she’s zapped to the 2nd century—and promptly informed she’s managed to wed her handsome Highlander without even an “I do.” Oh, hell no.
After a devastating tragedy, Connall’s tribe is left with few marriageable women. When his Druid priest suggests a place filled with bonnie lasses, he of course agrees to go fetch one for himself. But nothing prepared Connall for his sassy new wife, nor his tribe for a woman determined to see equal rights for all women.
This was a decent read. It was a little slow at first, but got better as it went on. The characters were likable and the overall plot was good. The romance aspect of it was a little on the flat side, but still enjoyable. I recommend.

I recieved a free copy from.netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I really liked the concept behind Some Like It Plaid, even though I am not bring on the whole time travel to the past romance novels. The start of the book felt slow but once they ended up back in time, it really picks ups. However, I think the part that really held me back was the thought that any modern person would chose to live in 156 AD. I mean how long are the H/h actually going to have a HEA before they both die young. The actual story was great with out hero accepting the knowledge of someone from the future with the side of a magical equivalent to Google and his becoming more and more accepting for equality between genders without going too far beyond the thinking of his time so as to be realistic. 3.5 stars.
Some Like it Plaid is very Outlander-esque but a bit lighter of subject and easier to read. It is the story of a woman who has had a lot of setbacks in life who answers a Craigslist ad for a job, and got way more than she bargained for.
It had a few plot holes that made me a little crazy (i.e. what about her family??) but in general it was an enjoyable and quick read.
3/5 stars
I thought this was a good romantic story set in the ancient Scotland highlands. I just wasn’t able to connect to the characters as much as I normally do.
Brief Synopsis
Ashley answers a Craigslist ad for a free trip to Scotland in exchange for housework and finds herself married to Connall in the 2nd century Scottish highlands.
Pacing & Points of View
The pacing of this story was average with the main points of view being Connall and Ashley.
Characters
I really liked Ashley's character and I would've liked to see more of her backstory. I wouldn't call this an enemies to lovers romance, but there was definitely some tension from Ashley due to be yanked back through time and suddenly married. There were plenty of sex scenes to keep you reading and those had the most chemistry. There was really no build up of chemistry and day to day occurrences that really keep you on the edge of your seat in a romance. This is most likely one of the reasons why it felt a little instalove. Another was the lack of communication between Ashley and Connall. I don't think they really discussed anything other than the issues going on in the village instead of personal issues or thoughts with each other. Both of these things lead me to feel disconnected to the characters and made the story a little flat for me.
Overall
Overall, I would say I liked this story. I just wish I could have connected to the characters more through the main characters communicating feelings more or

Fed up trying to pay off her ex-husbands debt, Ashley answers a craigslist job ad and meets a time traveling Scotsman desperately seeking a wife. After travelling back to 156 A.D. Ashley learns she must spend a month with hunky Connall before she can travel back home. Some Like It Plaid by Angela Quartes' is a fun, fast paced read with plenty of hot and steamy romance along the way. If you love time travel romance and hot Scots this book is for you.
I am a sucker for anything time travel, add to that a historical romance? BAMM! I am all in!
I enjoyed the first few chapters but after that this book lost me.
I tried to finish this book a few times now but alast! I’ve DNF-ed it.
Granted, historical romance is not typically my thing, but I've read and enjoyed other things by Angela Quarles. (In fact, her Stolen Moments series is one of my all-time favorites!) So I thought I would give this book a try. It was... okay. Not great, not horrible, just okay.
The first ten percent or so is the backstory, concerned with explaining to the reader how and why Connall ends up traveling from ancient Scotland to present-day New York City. It's a bit confusing at first, but things fairly quickly fall into place so that we become aware of what is going on. Both Connall and Ashley adapt remarkably well to their new surroundings, although he does a bit better than her at accepting things as they are.
Lack of communication between the two creates a myriad of problems along the way, as they get to know one another and deal with the various issues of life in a archaic environment. The biggest issue is that both have feelings for each other that they are unwilling to express, and expectations that they don't bother to explore. Ashley ended up in a much better situation - regardless of how primitive it was - than she was experiencing in her own time. And (although I totally agreed with her), I found it absolutely absurd that Ashley would expect Connall to change everything about his entire society to suit her 21st Century viewpoints. But Connall expecting her to fit right in to his lifestyle after having seen what she was used to was nearly as bizarre. I did like the eventual compromise that they came to, but it was certainly hard won.
The one real love scene between them was pretty spicy, and some of the other love scenes were equally intense. The interactions between these two were a bit flat and sometimes seemed kind of forced. Still, you couldn't help rooting for them to realize and delcare their love for one another. When they finally did, the writing was a bit sappy, but the sentiment was delightful.
The peripheral characters were interesting and a lot of the side action was intriguing. There was mention of several characters who story archs were never fleshed out much, leading me to believe that this may be the first of a series with more episodes to come. I'd be interested in checking those out to see where things go from here.
I give this book 3,5 stars.
I had hoped for a romcom when I saw the cover and read the resume of the book. The beginning didn’t disappoint but then when the two main characters time traveled to Scotland in 156 AD the story became a lot more serious and almost a history lesson.
I really loved learning about Scotland’s history in 156 AD and the raids and fights between the clans or the Romans that invaded the country at the time or how they lived and how the women was undermined and wasn’t aloud in the clan meetings. But it wasn’t what was promised I think.
I loved the two main characters Ashley and Connall and the chemistry between them is scorching hot and their sex scenes are so steamy especially the cave scene. All the other men in the clan are amazing and I look forward to Connall’s brothers story next.
If you like magic there is a good amount of this in the story too.
I can recommend this book if you like Scottish history, big burly Scottish warriors, great feministic women and an amazing steamy romance.
I got this book from Entangled Publishing and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley and Emara Publishing for my free review copy. All opinions are my own. Continuing with our Droughtlander coverage… now this book I loved! Some Like it Plaid jumped out at my on NetGalley for two reasons – Abs and Tartan 🥰. There is literally no shame in my Scotland game. I love a good brogue, kilt, or red head. In this story, our hunky future chieftain leaves 1st century Scotland for 2019 San Francisco to catch himself a wifey, whom he promptly teleports back to Scotland (Druid magic IDK) and shenanigans ensue. Funny, romantic, and totally cute. I loved it! 4 stars.
Some Like it Plaid by Angela Quarles is a novel filled with conflict and romance after Ashley answers Connall’s Craigslist ad regarding a trip to Scotland that takes her back in time.
Readers will enjoy this fun, light novel that is rife with romantic chemistry, misunderstandings, and a happily ever after.
Ashley is fed up with working all the hours she can to try to pay off the debt her ex left behind. She just wants to escape, which makes the job she sees in Craigslist, looking after a Scottish highlander, sound like the perfect escape. Too bad she finds out the advert for a wife got lost in translation and she is bound to hunky Connall with all the problems of living nearly two thousand years in the past. I found the story to be interesting and entertaining, not sure that the title really reflects the contents. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this story. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Angela Quartes' Some Like is Plaid is a fun time travel read. I love reading historical romance books, but I have never read something that takes place in the 1st century. Great read! Ashley and Connall's story is wonderful. Could not put it down. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
Some Like It Plaid by Angela Quarles is a unique take on time travel and historical romance. Great believable, broken and developing characters. The storyline is complex. I was pulling for Ashley and Connall from the beginning. The way the story develops sucks you in.. the supporting characters really pull the story together. The time period was also one that I have not read a lot f stories about.
Enjoyed everything about this book. Enjoy!!!
