A fantastical read that will have you googling history and events to find out more. Ashley is disillusioned with the integrity of men to fully respect the thoughts of women and equality. Hiding from men collecting the debt of her ex, she answers an ad that brings so many more questions and a scarey reality. Connell has the best interest of his tribe in mind when seeking a wife that will heed his word, boy he gets a huge surprise with the woman that he brought home. Raiding parties, no modern medicine, central heating, I dont know if I could survive back in time, but the hot Scottish men are tempting. Love the story, love the characters, and most of all the HEA. Cant wait for more.
I've read several time travel books so I was prepared for this to be another cut and paste story but the author had a creative twist that caught my attention right away. Of course, Ashley is attracted to hunky highlander Connell but she has no intention of becoming his bride. The heroine is just as strong as the hero in this love story and he will have to come halfway if he wants to keep her from returning to her time period. This is a stand-alone novel but I'm hoping it will become part of a series. A great read for Scottish romance lovers!
What a lovely read! I was a bit hesitant when Connall went forward into the future...it's always so cringeworthy! And I feel it so personally. I was glad when he grabbed Ashley to go back in time. Loved how Quarles set up the "magic" for the book, especially with google! That was great! I am really looking forward to the next brother going forward to find his mate. I'm assuming there will be another book...I certainly look forward to reading a next book!!
Some Like it Plaid by Angela Quarles is a fun time travel romance novel. Ashley is such a realistic woman from our modern times. She just went through a divorce, she doesn't seem to get along with her family now that her ex turned them against her...and she is paying her ex husband's bad debts. Tired of working two jobs and living in a pod in urban America,. Ashley applies to a job offer on Craig's List.
What she thinks is a job offer is actually a marriage offer to a Scottish man from the past who needs a wife to have his kids. Sooner than she can process his cute accent and manly swagger, Ashley is in the past with Connell. The chemistry between them sizzles and they have many obstacles to overcome. The communication issues between them are hilarious as this is as much a romantic comedy as a time travel novel.
The most intriguing character in the novel is the Druid, Mungan and The Emperor Norton. I find myself wanting to read novels about them as they are mysterious and fascinating!
Overall an enjoyable read!! Will definitely read more novels by Angela Quarles .
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of Some Like it Plaid for me to read and enjoy. As always, my opinions are my own.
Well. The general idea of the story is actually rather appealing. I‘m just not down with the delivery. It might be due to my being new to the author’s writings that I found it difficult to enjoy the tale. But SOME LIKE IT PLAID felt lacking in depth to me. I know this is supposed to be a sort of mix of rom com with historical romance and I shouldn’t think too much about it. But none of the characters drew me as a reader; in fact I found both MCs annoying. As for the chemistry between the pair - aside from the obvious lusty, sexual ones - I just didn’t see it.
Personally, I thought the book trying to take on too many things, like the hero’s wretched past, the raid, the alliance, etc etc, but barely touching the surface of the matter. It’s like it’s undecided whether to stay on the amusing, lighthearted vibe or go the angsty, heavy stuff. This is what I felt throughout reading and frankly it bugged me so much I almost didn’t finish.
Copy of this book is kindly given by the author/publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Some Like it Plaid by Angela Quarles is what I hope it the first book in a series with the men of Connell's village. Ms. Quarles is a new author to me so I'm definitely going to check out her other books.
Being the eldest son of the Chief when a meeting is called to solve the lack of marriageable women in their village, Connell is chosen to go and find a solution. Their Druid Mungan offers to send one person into time and he volunteers. When he lands in San Francisco 2019 he doesn't understand why no one wants to be his wife. So with the help of Emperor Norton (Another story that is worth reading) he places an ad on Craigslist for a "Scottish Lass Wanted". Little does he know that when Ashley answers the ad that she'll have to adjust to 1292 AD where things are not equal to women. Can he be able to convince her that organizing the women of the village is not accepted in his time? When they are attacked again and Ashley disobeys his orders to rescue the elderly can he convince her to stay?
Ashley Miller is working 2 jobs and making jewelry for her Etsy shop to pay of her ex-husband's debts all while dodging bookies wanting money from said hubby's bad bets. When she answers Connell's ad and washing and cleaning really means you have do this and the bucket in the corner of the hut? Yep, that's the bathroom and it needs to be emptied daily. She'll have a signal tower built to warn everyone of an impending attack, help the elders escape plus transport a pregnant mom with a baby on the way get to the Castle Keep when she leaves it will be the women she helped tell him that he'd better convince Ashley to stay.
This is such a fun storyline so creative. I really enjoyed when Connell was in the present time and how odd everything was to him. Not only a foreign land but era and language it was such a fascinating storyline. When Connell and Ashley made the trip back to his land and time it was like that’s so crazy. I wish her attitude would have been a bit more positive and maybe had some stories to tell about her land and time to everyone. The ending was super good too, he made it back to her in time but she was also already changing her mind to stay. I loved that she rallied the women together. She was making an impact on the tribe and it wasn’t until people started talking to each other did Connell realize how much the tribe and the women needed Ashley it also how much he needed her.
I received a copy from NetGalley via the author; this is my honest review. #SomeLikeItPlaid #NetGalley
-Right off at the start the story is engrossing, interesting, and gives you the premise for the rest of the story and the need for time travelling.
-There is another story behind so it's probably better reading the next books in order.
-So Connall blows in way in the future and tries to adjust for the short time he'll be there. I think the funniest part was when he tried to pick up a woman on the street, saying he came from the land of Scotland.
-I loved Norton, even if we don't really meet him, but the fact that he wanted the Craigslist's ad to be discreet gives out a good vibe.
-The fact that Connall was macho-alpha didn't bother me as much as the need for Ashley to have rights and convert every women around to the opinion of the 20th century.
-I don't recall having this much swearing in all the other books from Quarles. There was no need for it and didn't reflect people of Ashley's time.
I enjoyed this one! It is a time travel romance from our time to ancient Scotland. The writing was witty and I liked the hero and heroine. Thank you to netgalley for the ARC.
****Some Like It Plaid is a clever time travel story about a warrior who needs to find a wife because most of the women in his clan have been captured and put into slavery. Connall is transported to modern day San Francisco where he meets Ashley, who has no idea that the cooking and washing job in Scotland she applies for will actually be before Scotland even exists... in 156 AD. ..and involves a lot more than cleaning. The author has done a fair amount of research on the period when Rome was extending its control. She has created a plausible, oftentimes exciting story that incorporates superstition, magic, hardships and the difficulties of just surviving all wrapped up in what this reader would consider a New Adult love story. Ashley has to make a lot of adjustments and Connall is unprepared for a woman who doesn’t hesitate to speak her mind or take matters into her own hands. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book from NetGalley.
I enjoyed this time travel romance. Ashley is an overworked divorcee living in a pod and struggling to pay off her ex-husband's debts when she meets Connall. She met him after responding to a job interview, but missed that he was actually looking for a wife.
When Ashley and Connall return to his time, Ashley struggles to make sense of her new reality, even while trying to find a way home. Their relationship develops slowly and has many bumps along the way, especially on the role of women is Connall's tribe.
While I liked the characters and enjoyed the story, it just fell a bit flat to me. I didn't feel invested in their story and, while I finished the book, didn't feel like I couldn't put it down.
If you enjoy the genre, you will like this book.
