An academic deep dive into the history, and present, of the public restrooms, Bathroom Battlegrounds delves into the historic issue of restrooms as an entity, first for sanitary reasons when public health was at the forefront of social good, and then into the more modern issue of gendered restrooms. It's interesting to note that the first public restrooms were all-gendered, for all intents and purposes, and only transitioned into the modern gender binary that we typically see today for the (somewhat sexist) reason of providing "delicate ladies" with a more private, comfortable, and ostensibly cleaner space than was provided for the men - why this couldn't have been provided for all genders is beyond me (though looking at the time period, which is to say, the Victorian era, I'm not so naive that I don't entirely understand).

Bathroom Battlegrounds is an intensely researched but still very readable examination of how we got to where we are and why something as simple as a public restroom has become a major point of contention in our society. Definitely worth the time.
