The projects in this book are basic and will make very simple but nice items for day to day use. I liked that the step by step pictorial illustrations and instructions are detailed so you’re not left wondering if there should have been more steps in between.

Overall a great book for the beginner leather crafter.

A really good introduction to leatherwork, showing the tools and techniques you will need to make these lovely little projects. Good for beginners.

Nice thing about this book is it gives ratings of difficulty of the leather projects. Having never worked with leather, I was uncertain if this would be a good book for a beginner and found that the directions were pretty clear. Not sure how easy leather will be to work with, but look forward to trying some of these projects.
Thanks to netgalley for an advanced copy of this book for an honest opinion.

Love the concept. Work the eather isn't easy and this book doesn't change that, specially 'cause there's no basic treatment, however this really like it

Such a great book for the person who already sews a bit but is intimidated by leather. The projects are cute and contemporary and not home-ecky. I'm off to source some good thin leather now!

Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for a digital ARC.

Little Delights in Leather is an accessible and appealing leathercrafting tutorial project book full of projects assembled using a home sewing machine. Originally published in French in 2014, this English translation is due out 28th Nov 2019 from Schiffer Publishing. This edition (which reads seamlessly in English) is 96 pages and available in hardcover format.

The thorough introduction (~17% of the content) includes tools, materials, beginning techniques, leather definitions and types, selecting materials, braiding, finishing, and more. The 10 tutorial chapters contain appealing, mostly feminine(ish) projects with 8 bags/purses (and accessories), and 2 wearables (baby moccasins and kid-sized mittens).

Each of the projects includes a difficulty rating (none of them are beyond a keen beginner), tools & materials, recommended leathers, measurements, and step-by-step cutting and assembly instructions. The photos and illustrations are clear and easy to follow. I liked it that the templates for each pattern are included in the actual chapter, not at the end of the book, so there's no flipping back and forth and hunting for the correct pieces. That was a big bonus for me. Each of the pattern pieces is also clearly and well labeled, saving frustration and materials.

Many of these projects are color blocked (or can easily be adapted), so readers can use up even the smallest scraps. A lot of the projects could also be adapted to use partly woven fabric, making this a good purchase for more general crafters and sewists. The measurements are given in US standard. Materials are easily sourced from a well stocked crafts shop, or online. There is no index or resource lists, but it doesn't present any difficulties, so I haven't detracted anything for that. This is a nice resource for beginning to intermediate leatherworkers, or more general crafters looking to expand their materials repertoire to leather.

Note: The publishing info states that the book is due out 28th Nov, but it appears to currently be available from online retailers; (so this review is being published early).

Five stars. Just making one of the included projects would save enough over retail to cover the price of the book.

Preliminary caveat: I worked for years in a custom leatherworker's studio as a patternmaker and production assistant; we made everything from mass-produced leather wrist cuffs and men's vests to OOAK leather corsets, motorcycle pants, and more. As such, I can be hypercritical about construction choices on RTW leather garments and accessories, and I have strong opinions about quality methods and techniques.

It's probably unfair but I have to admit, I was predisposed to skepticism with respect to the quality of this book due to the goofy title. (Little Delights in Leather? Really? Is it about making leather cupcakes and macarons because please.) I assumed--before I even downloaded the digital ARC--that it would contain amateur construction techniques (like riveting everything together in oak-tanned leather) and incredibly simplified projects like, say, a single-layer cuff bracelet, a pet collar, a change purse, etc.

I am so thrilled to be proven wrong!

The book features a chart explaining leather weights/thicknesses right at the outset, which is a refreshing change from books which put such a thing at the rear with glossary/appendices. You need to buy leather to make these things, so might as well put the reference table for novices where they can find it first.

Voituriez hasn't dumbed down her subject. She encourages readers to be fearless about leather production methods, offering tips on sewing by both hand and machine. The projects include a range of useful items--from a tablet case to various styles of bags to mittens to baby shoes and more. The projects are structured to include reasons to learn skills such as leather braid construction or tassel-making. Turns out this is a great new title for crafty-minded makers interested in learning to work with leather.

The title, enh, it still bothers me. Unless perhaps the book is aimed at a demographic market that uses "delight" as an unironic noun?

I received an ARC of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Some cute little accessories to make with pieces of leather. Husband was hoping for larger projects that he would enjoy and felt these were too young and girlish for him to want to make. Small purses, phone pockets, baby shoes, etc.

This book is very good for someone who is a beginner, or has a little knowledge about working with leather.
It has clear instructions and guidelines, along with step by step instructions and diagrams.
At the start of each project it tells you exactly what tools and materials you need, and also the measurements.
There is an explanation about the different types of leather.
I think that it would be easy to adapt the projects to your own designs once you have become more proficient.
It is a lovely book which is easy to read and understand.

This is such a little delightful book ;)

It's gorgeously and simply laid out with step-by-step instructions, templates, and photos. I think it's a great resource for people who already work in leather or for those who are not new to sewing. On my end, it's a bit intimidating since I'm not a fan of sewing (but I'm a fan of leather). It's a great gift for someone who is already proficient in some of these techniques - and hopefully they'll grant you a gift of a leather good in exchange :)

This is a lovely book that makes working with leather more accessible. All the projects are chic and stylish and the pictures are beautiful. The instructions are very clear and the diagrams make everything easy to understand. I particularly like the tote and the little fox purse. The specialist tools required are minimal and you could probably have a go with what you have. It is a lovely book just to browse and it is so clear that you could use the knowledge contained to adapt the projects or design your own.
