This book seemed to be all over the place with the points of view. It started off very strong and I really think it had potential to be a very strong plot, but overall I didn’t care for the reveals.
This book could have been so good, but it was completely disjointed and unorganized! I was confused for about 70% of the way through, and there were so many different storylines that I couldn’t follow all of the connections. If there were chapter headings to tell me whose perspective I was reading from, it would have helped tremendously. I also felt like the story was written in parts, and copied/pasted together with very little transition or explanation as to why certain things were happening. Very disappointing!
The Other People is the latest book by C. J. Tudor. Ms Tudor does an excellent job of pulling the reader into the story and making it difficult to put down. The Other People is one of the books where you tell yourself just another few pages and continue reading for much too long! I want to thank Net Galley and Ballantine Books for an early copy to review.
C. J. Tudor’s books are like reading Stephen King books - suspenseful and always eerie. This book is as great as her other ones! Thanks for a spooky read!
I really enjoyed this book. I enjoy the writing style of Tudor. Like The Chalk Man you have a mystery and you have an actual story.
I felt this is a book about love, despair, grief and secrets and the price of all four.
I'm hoping that Tudor has another book in the works, I am never disappointed.
This is C.J. Tudor's best work yet. The storyline was crafted to perfection. Not only did it keep you engaged, it held you captive. Murder, vigilante justice, dark web activity, and a supernatural vibe. This book does NOT disappoint. Tudor is firing with all cylinders in this thriller. She has easily moved into the ranks of an author whose books I'd buy on her name alone. No need to read the synopsis, you just know it's gonna be great! #TheOtherPeople #NetGalley
The Other People is another imaginative and complex story by C. J. Tudor. And I loved it. Several lives are interconnected starting with Gabe, his murdered wife Jenny, and murdered – or was she missing? – daughter, Izzy. Then there’s Fran and Alice, Katie and her kids, Charlotte and her daughter, Isabella, and others. Yes, it’s complex, but it isn’t confusing.
I enjoyed the character development and the unexpected, both in the twists and in a bit of paranormal.
This was a fast read and a real page-turner. Thank you to NetGalley and Ms. Tudor for allowing me to read and review The Other People. It was my pleasure; I was definitely entertained.
CJ Tudor’s previous books were so good that I had to get my mitts on her new one ASAP. I’m very happy I did. The Other People grabbed my attention and didn’t let go. The main characters are so well-defined that I felt for them like I’d feel for longtime friends. Gabe lost his wife and daughter, but he knows his daughter is alive, because he saw her after she was supposedly killed. Or maybe he’s just lost his mind. Katie is a waitress in a dinner and she feels sorry for Gabe, who keeps driving up and down the roads where he last saw his little girl. Their stories are similar, but they don’t know it yet. Fran is running from something with her little girl, who may or may not be her daughter. As Gabe keeps finding out more information about his family’s murder, he discovers clues about The Other People. Who are they, and how are they involved, is the meat of the story. Nothing was as I expected and the plot made me think. What would I be willing to do to avenge, or get justice, for the death of a loved one. The author is so good at pacing the story that it never lags and the ending… what an ending. Five stars!
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley/Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine!
We're all guilty of this ... in a state of denial ... terrible things happen to other people ... the ones you read about in the newspaper ... or see on television ...until one day a phone call bursts your bubble and you realize it was only an illusion and your world explodes! Gabe is told his wife and beloved daughter Izzy have been brutally murdered and yet ... he just saw her face peeking through back window of a rusty old car littered with stickers. Gabe puts his life on hold and spends his waking hours traveling up and down the tributaries of the nearby roads searching for "that" car in hopes of rescuing his daughter and proving the authorities wrong. "Missing is different to being dead. In a way, it's worse. Death offers finality. Death gives you permission to grieve ... to hold memorials, to light candles and lay flowers. To let go." His quest leads to crossing paths with not only the denizens of the night but also the mundane ... the nice blonde-haired waitress Katie, at his frequent night time truck stop diner .... with kind eyes ... and whose children Sam and Gracie are watched over by her baby-sister Lou while she toils in her dead-end job. C J Tudor expertley weaves a chilling narrative populated by seemingly unrelated forces and circumstances leading to an intricate mosaic of a mystery ... the bread crumbs are laid out for us to follow to an unexpected but explosive denouement .
Woven together is the violent murder of Katie's father and the dysfunctional family life of all her sisters ... the younger,Lou and the older Fran ... who disappears the day of her father's funeral. The mysterious linkage cannot be discussed without exposing possible spoilers. However, should punishment and retribution always be expected?
Thanks to NetGalley and Ballantine- Random House Publishing for providing an Uncorrected electronic proof in exchange for an honest review. This is my third wonderful experience in reading Tudor's highly acclaimed and expected page-turners ... equalling her previous: The Chalk Man and The Hiding Place. I think I'm hooked forever. I am a huge C.J. Tudor fan and read this book in one day. There were lots of twists and turns and I did a lot of guessing. A few creepy parts but isn't that part of the experience? I was satisfied with the ending and gave the book a solid 4 stars. Eagerly waiting for her next release.
Everyone thinks Gabe's wife and daughter are dead...murdered in their home three years ago. Except Gabe believes she's alive. He saw her being taken that day in the back of an old car, and he hasn't given up looking for her.
As I started reading this book I had the thought that the writing style was a bit like that of Joe Hill's writing. Then the book mentioned Stephen King (Joe Hill's father), funny coincidence. I read a bit more and thought, huh...this feels a little bit like the book NOS4A2. And then the book mentioned Nosferatu the vampire and I got chills. It was the small bits of supernatural occurrences that put me in mind of Joe's work. Upon completion, however, the book most reminds me of The Chain by Adrian McKinty. If you liked The Chain, I feel like you will really enjoy this book.
The Other People follows multiple perspectives throughout the book, five to be exact--but I didn't have any trouble keeping the storylines straight. The author did a good job at giving each character their own voice. Each character is highly motivated by their own agenda and ultimately drove the story on. Despite this fact, it took me a while to read this book. I wasn't hanging onto the edge of my seat, and so each time I put the book down, it took me a while to pick it back up again.
If you like stories about unsolved murders, missing children, unexplained supernatural mysteries, and revenge, then this is the book for you!
Thanks to Netgalley for a chance to read and review an early copy!
I just finished The Other People by C.J. Tudor last night and I immediately had to get to the blog to share my thoughts. This wasn't at all what I was expecting, but it was so much more. I wasn't sure which genre this would be in and to be honest I am still not one hundred percent sure. It is a thriller, with a little supernatural element to it. To me one of the main things that sticks out during the first half of the book is grief, so this is also a bit of a drama. Several of the characters are dealing with grief and they all handle it in their own way. This makes this book so very compelling! On top of there are twists and some great thrills nearing the end. I for sure can say I didn't know what would happen next! So this is a win for me!!
I wish to thank Net Galley and the publisher Random House Publishing Book – Ballantine Books for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book. I have voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is an author that I have not read before. I will not rehash the story but will say it is a powerful psychological thriller. It grips you from the very start and twists and turns you so many time that you come away dizzy from the story. You will not figure this one out for sure and C. J. Tudor does a brilliant job with the telling of this story. Unlike others I did not find it a quick read and it took me longer than most to read. The story just goes on and on and on. I had to take a break and think about it for a day or two before I could return and get caught up in the story again. It hits on so many areas of loss, never giving up, revenge and murder at each segment of the tale. I will read more of her books in the future.
First compelling paragraph:
He noticed the stickers first, surrounding the car’s rear window and lining the bumper:
Honk if you’re horny.
Don’t follow me, I’m lost.
When you drive like I do, you’d better believe in God. Horn broken – watch for finger.
Real men love Jesus.
The Other People by C.J. Tudor opens with an eerie setting and the tension just keeps building.
This is a complex and compelling story told from multiple characters; emitting a pervasively creepy atmosphere that carries all the way until the end. It is a story of grief and loss, murder and revenge and explores the lengths of just how far some will go to avenge the wrongs done to those they love. Enter The Other People, who call it justice but beware, the favor they ask in return could cost you more than you’re willing to pay. From the Dark Web:
Q: What if I don’t repay the Favor?
A: We always try to ensure that the Favor is one you are able to complete, happily and willingly. Failure to complete your Favor threatens the very integrity of our site. That is why we have measures in place to ensure it doesn’t happen.
The Other People is a haunting psychological thriller with supernatural elements but it also offers a unique insight into one man’s grief and unrelenting pursuit of his child; a heart-wrenching exploration of the power and despair of love and hope:
“People say hate and bitterness will destroy you. They’re wrong. It’s hope. Hope will devour you from the inside like a parasite.”
This is a stunning read that will stay with me for a while. I highly recommend this psychological thriller to any fan of the genre. It’s a fantastic read!
A big thank you to NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group, Ballantine Books and C.J. Tudor for providing me with a copy of this book for my honest review.
C.J. Tudor is a new to me author and even though I'm a bit leary when it comes to thrillers once I read the synopsis I knew I had to read it!
The Other People is gripping from the start! The very beginning had my heart beating so fast, especially as a parent, it's my worst nightmare!
I will say it took me a bit to get into C.J's writing style, and some of the lingo and that could be because she's a British author and it was just different than I'm accustomed to.
The Other People is creepy, suspenseful, scary and unputdownable!
A good thriller to make you question reality itself.
3.5, rounded up, because the reading was very enjoyable.
The unimaginable happened to Gabe when he was just going home to his family, like any other day. His wife and daughter were brutally killed. But, if that's true, why did he see his daughter in a car hours after she had been dead? He now spends his days searching for traces that could lead him to understand the little girl he saw calling to him that night.
This book is told in several points of views and another is Kate, a waitress who sees Gabe every week, not knowing the special connection the two share and how important she'll become to him. And to be honest, she was my favorite character in all this. Although, given the circumstances, she's the easiest to relate.
I was a big fan of The Chalk Man but not so much of this author's following work, so I should say I was skeptical about this one. Yet, this surprised me in a great way. While I wasn't as involved as in The Chalk Man, the story kept me guessing every turn. This was surely a great comeback.
I liked how the ending wrapped things up, it gives a satisfactory feeling, although, for a moment, I thought there would still be some knots left. Luckily, I think it was all resolved in a way or another.
My lower grade is because I can't say it left that big an impression either. I had a great time reading and while some elements were interesting, it wasn't all that new. I also have a problem with the supernatural parts I unfortunately can't say here because I don't want to spoil anyone, but it got considerably in the way of my enjoying the read. Just don't expect much in that area.
Still, this is nice as a thriller, and much above what we see around.
I have been a fan of C.J. Tudor since her first novel two years ago and I now know that I am going to be a lifelong fan! This book captivated me from the beginning and held my interest till the very end. I flew through the novel because I needed to see what would happen and I wasn't disappointed! I highly recommend it.
C.J. Tudor’s best book yet!! I was so excited to be able to read an advance copy of this book. Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group Ballantine Books !!! I stopped what I was reading to devour this novel. The Other People is a dark twisty psychological thriller. The story is told through several different view points. There is so much good in this story but I don’t want to give anything away. Do yourself a favor and read this book!!!
This premise is sort of like Strangers on a Train, but with a much more complex web of people connected by the dark web. Basically, if you want to take out a hit on someone who has hurt you or your family, just send in your request and it's done... but you will be expected to assist in future hits. A very entertaining and engaging read with a slight supernatural element.
C J. Tudor has done it again with this intense nail biter. Gabe is driving home late one night when he sees his young daughter mouthing “daddy!” to him from the back of an unknown car. When Gabe’s wife and daughter are found murdered, the police are convinced that he is mistaken, but Gabe never ceases searching in the years following. Enter Fran, who is on the run with her daughter Alice and whose life is intertwined with Gabe’s, unbeknownst to him. What follows is a tale of those seeking retribution for past mistakes who end up receiving way more than they bargained for in psychologically twisted game of whodunnit.
Tudor is undoubtably an excellent writer and I found this plot to be compelling, as I did with the Chalk Man. I found many similarities between this book and Adrian McKinty’s the Chain, which I also read recently. This type of plot seems to be a new trend in psychological fiction and it is definitely intriguing and makes you think. Tudor weaves multiple storylines seamlessly and provides much entertainment with this dark, twisted, enjoyable read.
Many thanks to Netgalley, Ballantine Books and C. J. Tudor for my complimentary e-copy ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
