C J Tudor is amazing. Reminds me of a modern day Alfred Hitchcock. Layers and layers of mystery unraveled one chapter at a time. And SUSPENSE..... so much h it makes it impossible to stop reading long enough to eat or sleep. This is what the word THRILLER was intended for. This book deserves more than 5 stars!!!
A man driving home, stuck in traffic, pondering his life. He’s sure his wife is upset for being late. He then sees his daughter in the car ahead of him. He tries to stay behind the car only to lose it. Calling home a Voice answers who is not his wife, he is told to come home. Upon arrival he is told his wife and daughter have been murdered. How can it be? He saw his daughter in the back of the car! Gabe spends the next 3 years driving up and down the highway in search of the car he saw his daughter, Izzy, in the back of. Why won’t anyone believe he saw her and that she didn’t die that day? And if she is alive, where is she? And who is the little girl that is in her grave? Where was Gabe that day? And just who is The Other People? This story takes Gabe through so many twists and turns.
Be careful what you wish for.... the price might be hefty.
CJ Tudor has recently joined other greats in rank and has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I have read all three of her books and every single one of them has impressed me with not only her storytelling skill but with her poetic prose. You can count on her for unsettling, creepy, disturbing plots. The Other People is a fast paced thriller with a supernatural element that keeps you enthralled. Deliciously dark and haunting, I can’t wait for her next one!
Having read C.J. Tudor's "The Chalk Man" and liking it well enough, I decided to pick up her newest title. This book. I will say that I enjoyed this book much more than her first novel. "The Chalk Man" had a very macabre atmosphere and had more of a madman mystery to it's plot. It slowly seeped into your mind and wrapped it's gnarled roots around your psyche. "The Other People", on the other hand, has you questioning just what type of story it is. It has psychological suspense, a murder mystery, very unsettling clandestine organizations, and who knows, maybe some supernatural. Tudor does a great job of using all of these plot points to really keep you searching for the right piece to stick into the puzzle. Sometimes an author lobs all of these various ingredients into a story and it tastes muddled or just plain confusing. Tudor manages to use these elements to sharpen the edges of the story and really punch up the taste of the final product.
Overall, the characters were interesting, the plot was solid, the atmosphere was on-the-edge-of-your-seat uncomfortable, the ending was well-kept and satisfying enough. I did find a lull about a quarter of the way through the book when it seemed to sparingly throw us crumbs to lead us to the future of the story, but the atmosphere pulls you along through it well enough. Also, The Other People. You'll know what I mean when you read it. Scary, unsettling, unnerving. It's the aspects of a story that seem outlandish but teeter so close on the edge of plausible that really get under your skin. The ones you see in your peripheral vision. Great story. Would recommend.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for an e-ARC of this title.
Please someone help and tell me what I read. This was fast paced and I couldn't stop reading. But honestly I could barely keep up with what was going on. I am pretty sure I am still lost on on of those highways. I am also left with quite a few unanswered questions. This is a 3.5 star review for me. This was dark and creepy with some amazing characters. I just have a few unanswered questions which is why it will round to 3 instead of 4.
This novel was super creepy and super dark but I loved it. The Other People was by far my favorite CJ Tudor book that I’ve read. It was twisty, scary, had a touch of sci-Fi, and had me constantly on my toes. There were a few times where I got a little confused with all the twists and turns in the plot, but all in all it was a very enjoyable read. This is one that will stick with me for a while. Thank you to Netgalley for sending it in exchange for an honest review.
Can you imagine driving home and seeing someone who resembles your daughter being kidnapped, but you can't stop it?? Welcome to the nightmare that is Gabe's life. This book starts off with a serious hook to grab you. As a parent that is my worst nightmare that something will happen to my son I can't protect him from. They say what goes around comes around. What if you could make that happen? Take karma into your own hands? That's basically what this story is about.
This story is a little creepy, a little scary, definitely dark and complex. It has a Stephen King"ish" feel and influence in the writing. I'm not a big fan of paranormal, but it works here.
"People say hate and bitterness will destroy you. They're wrong. It's hope. Hope will devour you from the inside like a parasite."
The storyline is completely original and a different twist on your typical thriller. I look forward to reading more of Tudor's work, this was my first book of hers.
My thanks to C.J. Tudor, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really like this author's books. I recommend this book as well as all the author's other books. I look forward to more books by C. J. Tudor.
CJ Tudor is an amazing author who delivers a hit with The Other People. This book details a father who is trying to find his kidnapped daughter. What would you do to find your daughter and to what lengths would it take to find her? CJ Tudor describes in vivid detail what she would do and it is a thrill ride to an amazing conclusion in this book. Highly recommend!
I received an ARC from the publisher in return for an honest review.
I overall enjoyed this book. It was definitely a page turning thriller! I’ll have to admit, I liked The Chalk People a little bit better though!
Disappointed. Liked the previous thriller but felt like this just fell flat. It all seemed a little too unbelievable and far fetched. Really only the last 50 pages were with reading.
Having read Tudor's previous book, The Chalk Man, I was very excited to get my hands on The Other People. I will admit that the beginning was slow, the first quarter or so, I thought it might be a 2-3 star read, but once it picked up.. wow! I loved the plot and definitely didn't see the twists coming. I definitely recommend pushing through the first little bit to get to some thriller gold!
Oh. My Goodness. This was so good and the premise absolutely scares me. I don't think this could happen in real life but who knows! I loved the layout of the book- the chapters were short, and was an easy read. The chapters rotated between 3 settings for the most part. A chapter would end with something happening to one of the characters and then you wouldn't get back to that until after the next 2 chapters! And ALL the 3 settings had something crazy going on so it just made you want to keep reading. I would definitely recommend this crazy thriller and thank you Ballantine Books and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I just finished reading The Other People by C.J. Tudor and I gave this book 3 stars this book was really good, I really enjoy the thrilling aspect but I feel like it lack something. Here’s a short synopsis:
Driving home one night, Gabe sees the face of a little girl he knows in the rear window of the car in front.
She mouths one word - 'Daddy'.
He never sees his five-year-old daughter, Izzy, again.
The police believe she's dead. But three years later, Gabe still drives the roads, searching for the car that took Izzy, never giving up hope . . .
Fran and her daughter, Alice, aren't searching - but running. Always one step ahead of the people who want to hurt them.
The synopsis really had me hook and I had to read it but it was interesting as I read it, it keep me wanting more, if you thriller/mysteries then this book is for you
Such a great novel! Very fast paced and full of twists. It was heartbreaking and seemed so real at the same time. I was hooked right from the beginning and absolutely loved every second of it!
Well written story. Kept me engaged the entire time. A page turner for sure! Looking forward to reading more books by this author!
Wow! What an incredible well put together thriller. This was my first C.J. Tudor read and it won’t be my last. Gabe’s story in The Other People was hard to read at times. It was gut wrenching twisted and dark. However, it sucked me in and I found I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend reading.
*Special thank you to NetGalley for providing this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review*
Good read with some strange twists. At first I had trouble getting into the story but as the plot twisted and turned I was hooked till the end.
Driving home one evening, Gabe thinks he sees his daughter's face in a car. When he gets home, he discovers his wife and daughter have been murdered. He is briefly a suspect in the murder, but Gabe is convinced his daughter is still alive, despite all the evidence to the contrary. If his daughter is dead, how did he see her in the car that night?
Gabe spends the following years driving around, looking for the car he spotted that night. The narrative is also told from the POV of Fran, who, with her daughter Alice, is on the run from someone, and Katie, who works at a service station where Gabe often stops.
Gradually we find out how Gabe, Fran, and Katie are connected. Gabe starts to find clues about what might have really happened to his daughter. Then there is the Samaritan: who is he, and why is he helping Gabe? Who are the Other People, and what do they want?
There are so many twists and turns in this book, so many layers. I wasn't expecting the supernatural element, and I'm not sure it really added anything to the story in the end. It did make for some spooky moments along the way, though.
Recommended for fans of psychological thrillers and murder mysteries.
Gabe has spent his life searching for his missing daughter convinced that she is still out there even though everyone has told him she has died the same day that his wife died. Gabe continues on this quest and discovers secrets of the night that ultimately lead him to solving the mystery. I absolutely loved this book.
