I really liked this one... One of the things I liked about it from the beginning was the uncertainty - was this going to be paranormal? Was it horror? Was it a straightforward thriller? There were elements of all of these woven in the story, and they were crafted together into a whole that left me guessing in a way that I found maddening and enjoyable at the same time. Having your child go missing is every parent's worst nightmare, and Tudor did an excellent job laying out the stress and the strain that would inevitably follow such an event. I found the characterizations excellent and the pacing to be spot-on.
The secret behind The Other People was presented with just enough red herrings and confusion to heighten the tension, but as things began to clarify, details were rolled out in a way that felt incredible and credible at the same time. This is the third or fourth book with a similar theme that I have read recently, and I have really enjoyed each of them. The underlying concept is a fascinating one, and I think Tudor's handling of it was managed in an innovative and engaging way.
Holy Moses, I absolutely LOVED The Other People by C.J. Tudor! This is my first time reading a book by her and it has me wondering what took me so long.
The Other People is fast-paced and completely addicting. Once I started I didn't want to put it down and I could see lots of people reading this in one sitting if you have the same reaction as I did. I couldn't wait to find out where it was going, and I really enjoyed the creepiness of it. I think it would make for a great Fall/Halloween read.
I really liked the multiple viewpoints and how things tied together at the end. Maybe there are "too" many answers for some readers, but I personally was incredibly happy with it. At the same time, the last chapter still left me with a chill but made me grin, just a little, and there were a few times that I had to laugh at certain things. I enjoyed the dry humor, and I thought it helped with the heaviness of the novel. And what book would be complete without yelling at characters? I got annoyed with Gabe a few times and I hope I'm not the only one! I also loved the nod to Bill Hicks.
Final Thought: I'm so glad I finally read a C.J. Tudor novel and now I can't wait to read her first two books. If you're in the mood for a unique thriller with some creepy vibes but also lots of murder, The Other People should be a perfect fit. I know it won't be for everyone, but I loved it so much and I'll definitely be reading her other book VERY soon. I swear it!
Thank you to NetGalley for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Okay, fine, 3.5 stars rounded up instead of down, as is my usual inclination. It's probably an all-around four-star read, but I find myself hesitating to jump fully into that extra half-star because I'm not sure if I actually enjoyed it that much, or I just liked it so much more than The Chalk Man that I'm building this one up by comparison. That's not to say I didn't enjoy The Other People. I really, really did. I think that while I was reading it I was, for the most part, extremely on board with the book. By the time I got to the end I was left feeling kind of glad it was over, and not in the usual, satisfying, this-thriller-has-thoroughly-worn-me-out-phew-I-need-a-nap kind of way.
This one was pretty wild, and very twisty, as any well-written thriller should be. To be clear, this is an extremely well-written thriller. C.J. Tudor is an incredible writer and I would probably read anything she wrote, regardless of genre. I found myself frustrated because my personal reading pace just wasn't fast enough to keep up with how quickly I wanted to be reading this book. I danced that razor's edge of wanting to know what happens before it happens, and it's been so long since a suspense novel has actually made me feel that jittery feeling of, well...suspense. Again, though, I was so unimpressed by The Chalk Man, which was really a letdown because I was so excited for it when it debuted. It's really not fair to compare them because they're quite different in plot and style.
Seriously, though, if you read this for one reason and one reason only, it should probably be the writing.
That said, the plot was working really well for me until around the 60% mark. The deeper into The Other People I got, the more inundated I felt. Just absolutely swamped with details and happenings and "Oh look! Another element to the plot!" and "Now look here! Another twist to only further derail you!" to the effect that after a certain point I began to worry that there was no way to end it in a way that wouldn't be either underwhelming or overly confusing.
It ended up feeling a bit of both for me. By the end, I was mildly confused and had started losing interest some time a while before the last page turned just because there was too much going on, and too few satisfying answers. This is more down to personal preference than anything, though. There was a lot of meandering through the three distinct-but-somewhat-weak storylines that sort-of-but-not-really connected, and it just gave off vibes that the story was having a hard time finding its way.
It's kind of like when you give a kid a bat to take to a piñata, but you spin them around a few times first. Sure, inevitably the bat is going to connect and you'll get the prize inside—you'll get to the desired end, mind you, and it'll be fine—but there will be a lot of swinging, confusion, missing, and general stumbling along the way. Except in this case, you're the kid and you're blindfolded and confused and you just want to beat the dang piñata and be done, and really the result is only good because it's better than, say, hard peppermints. I really wanted that ending, and to be fair, I did get it. My piñata was just filled with not-terrible-but-not-amazing candy. Underwhelming. The ending was Tootsie Rolls.
I don't want to dissuade people from reading this though. Especially if you're like me and you were disappointed by The Chalk Man, because this one is much different and, in my opinion, much better. It was very twisty, spectacularly creepy, and delightfully suspenseful, and all with the added bonus of being both original and very well-written.
4.5 stars - This book had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I could not turn the pages quick enough. Now that I am finished, I want to go back and re-read it. C. J. Tudor is a master of this genre.
THis book is a quick read! I had to know who The Other People were and what was their role. It was a quick paced story with good twists to keep things moving.
The .Other People by C.J. Tudor is an exciting and unusual mystery. Its about a father's search for his lost daughter. Everyone tells him that she was killed and buried but he doesn't believe it. He felt he saw her in a car after she was supposedly klled.. WQhat makes this book so speciial his the father's determination to find his dauhter, risk his own death and his belief tha the can find her. I read this in one day and it's a long book. Just glad I had a free day!
Gabe is driving home and sees his young daughter in an unknown car in front of him. His cell phone is dead so he stops to call home and finds out his wife and daughter were murdered in their home. Did he really see his daughter in that car? Other chapters introduce us to Katie, a single mother who works at a rest stop Gabe frequents and Fran, a mysterious woman on the run with her daughter. There are lots of mysteries along the way and I was curious how Gabe, Kathie and Fran were all connected. I wasn't crazy about the supernatural events but otherwise really liked this book as well as C. J. Tudor's other books.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review! Many thanks and here’s my short review!
I have really enjoyed CJ Tudor’s previous books so I was excited to dig into this one too.
Honestly- It kinda fell flat for me. I did enjoy it- and I still recommend it. It just wasn’t amazing to me - 🤷♀️
🌟🌟🌟 stars from me. It was just a bit to unbelievable for me - but still enjoyable -
Dude.
What just happened?!
Like there are still some parts that I’m trying to wrap my brain around.
It’s supernatural, but it’s also not. He’s having an affair, but not. That person killed that person so now that person is dead- but has to kill someone else?
Seriously- what just happened.
This book is cyclical. Nothing is what it seems and is vengeful and somewhat understandable?
The characters were 50/50 to me. Gabe felt complex and layered, while Katie felt predictable.
I would totally read a sequel set around Fran!
The ending was wrapped up in a bow with some frayed edges coming out.
Meaning a lot of it fell into place just right and other parts were like seriously what?
I definitely got some Stephen King vibes from this one. All that paranormal mixed in with some violence and mayhem.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one! The writing is good and so suspenseful.
I couldn’t put it down most of the time.
Think of a road trip, Taken, Inception (mainly the weird dreams), and any vigilante movie ever made.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early reading copy of this book. I was so excited to receive it. I had been anxiously waiting for Tudor to release another book because I really enjoyed the previous books written. This book was a wild ride. Kept me locked in and entertained from the start. Enough slightly creepiness to have me on guard. It was a very fast read because I just couldn’t wait to know the ending. I throughly enjoyed this book and know that thriller lovers will too. Highly recommended!
This was my second book by C.J. Tudor and I can safely say that I am a fan! I absolutely love her infusion of the supernatural/paranormal into her thrillers. It adds such a wonderful layer of suspense.
In The Other People we meet Gabe, a man dangerously at the end of his rope. Ever since his wife and daughter were murdered he has spent his life driving the motorways. Convinced he saw his daughter in a car on the day of her murder, he refuses to accept his daughter is dead and continues to search for her.
Fran is on the run with her daughter but never feels safe. Alice falls into troubling sleep trances. Never knowing when she will be pulled under she tries to avoid certain triggers - like mirrors. In mirrors, she sees a girl looking back at her that is not herself. When she wakes up she has little to no memory of what happened but she's always left with a pebble in her hand. How do they appear? How is it possible to grab something tangible from a dream?
Katie is a single mother working at one of the service stations Gabe frequents. She saves his life after he's attacked one evening and finds herself immersed in his life when he mentions "The Other People". They dole out justice on their own terms. Gabe is determined to find out what they have to do with his wife’s death and his daughter's kidnapping.
Just when you think you have this story figured out - another secret is revealed. Everyone has something to hide and something greater to lose. You will find yourself second guessing everything. This one kept me turning the pages well into the night.

My Thoughts
This book pulled me in from the very first page! I loved how C.J. Tudor ended each of the POV/chapters with a hook. It made the book so compulsively readable, I never wanted to put this book down! Every time I thought about taking a break at the end of the chapter, something would be revealed and I'd keep flipping the page.
I had so many theories and suspicions while reading this! I had 2 full notebook pages filled with theories while reading. And while none of my guesses were actually that far off from what happening, the book was so intelligently woven, I didn't mind. I loved watching all of the threads and details come together. And I especially loved questioning whether or not this book was paranormal or full based in reality! It's one of my favorite ways for thrillers to build suspense. However, I was completely in love with the actual paranormal elements. I thought the final scene with Alice was just a little unnecessary
This was my first book by C.J. Tudor and it definitely won't be my last! I loved how suspenseful and well written this story was. This book held my attention and kept me enthralled the entire way through. Definitely recommend this if you want a quick, thrilling read!
My review is live on Goodreads and will be posted to my blog on February 21st at 9am
I enjoyed The Other People by C.J. Tudor. I like the writing style - the chapters are short and it is a quick and easy read. As the mystery unravels, the characters who are rotated amongst the chapters are woven together. There is a paranormal aspect to the story and I didn't really see it fitting in or necessary to the story. The story was a bit creepy but not scary. 3.5 stars, rounded up

I've been a mess ever since The Good Place finale (take it sleazy) and can't stop thinking about death, and being in the mind of a man who lost his wife and daughter isn't helping... so unfortunately, this book is peaking my anxieties right now and I can't finish it. I'm very interested in returning to finish this at a later point in time.
Oh my! The Other People by C. J, Tudor might be her most addictive yet. I started reading it early yesterday on a break at work and got annoyed that I had to wait until after work to finish it. What a hook! A man thinks he sees his child being driven in a strange car in front of him, decides himself crazy and drives on....only to be told a little while later that his wife and child have been attacked and murdered. I don't want to say a lot more in the review lest I give away spoilers. The Other People is best gone into as blindly as possible. It kept me on the edge of my seat and also pondering the question of what the world would look like if The Other People was a true story. I mean would anyone be safe? Who hasn't been egregiously wronged in some way, whether on purpose or accidentally? Who hasn't wronged someone accidentally or on purpose. This book made me think about how grateful I am that most people are not dwelling in hatred and bitterness. Also, for a fiction book with supernatural hintings, surprisingly, it gave a good life lesson to me on thinking about how much can go wrong when one constantly nurses pains of their past. Really addictive, fast read, and SO MUCH FUN!!!
I have not read any of this authors other books but I will now! This book had a fresh storyline, superb pacing and a fantastic ending. Loved every minute!! The chapters left me saying, just one more then I’ll put the book down. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was my first book read by C.J. Tudors. And I loved this books. It was such a riveting suspense. Was hooked from the 1st page!! The authors writing is addicting!! If you’re looking for a solid read look no further!! I can’t wait to read her other books now!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Another awesome creepy story from C. J. Tudor! The other people follows both Gabe and Fran, each traveling the motorway for their own reasons. Fran is fleeing, a Gabe is searching for his missing child. In the middle of it all are The Others, believing in their own kind of justice.
I've read The Chalk Man and The Hiding Place and enjoyed both, so I was excited to read this book. Sadly, I was disappointed with this one. However it looks like I am in the minority because all my Goodreads friends gave it rave reviews. I found it to be a really slow burner and struggled to keep reading. The story and characters were all over the place. There were so many storylines which made it hard to follow. The supernatural element wasn't needed and just made the book more confusing. The whole book was so farfetched and preposterous.
Thank you to NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and C.J. Tudor for a copy of "The Other People" in exchange of an honest review.
This is my first read by C.J. Tudor but definitely won’t be my last. The story line was great and it captivated from the minute I started reading all the way until the end. I thought the writing was smooth and easy to follow and I was able to connect with the characters on many levels. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a fast paced, mystery/suspense book.
