I sometimes wonder when I am going to give up trying to solve the mysteries before the police team is able to? Well, ... never I guess, because I always have so much fun attempting to link all the clues and seeing afterwards that I failed again. I do admit that I have no trouble suspecting certain things, but never the whole shebang.
This is the best brain gymnastics there is! Maybe, just maybe, the day will come that I will succeed in solving the cases.
In the first book the author gives us a lot of details about Iris' personal life and although this story can be read as a standalone, but I do advise to start with book 1.
Both books start rather slowly but the speed picks up soon enough.
If I have to choose a favourite character, I would say Ben Slattery. I have a soft spot for officers who work a little outside the system.
Why she ran? That's something you will have to discover for yourself. :)
I enjoyed it a lot. 4 stars
Thank you, Geraldine Hogan and Bookouture.
A fast paced, action packed and well written mystery that kept me on the edge till the end.
I liked the well thought cast of characters and the solid mystery.
Even if I didn't have any big issues with the characters or the plot I think it's better to read the previous instalment and there's quite a lot of backstory.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
This is the second book in the Iris Locke series and in my opinion you really have to read these books in order. There are an awful lot of references to her last case. I love the banter and one liners between Iris and Slatterly. The storyline was a bit stagnant in places but the climax soon made up for it and I got the killer wrong. Was this book good enough to make me search out the first? Already downloaded. Say no more. A good read and almost four stars.
I would like to thank the author, publisher and Netgalley for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
Second in the Iris Locke series. This follows on after revelations from the end of the first book and Iris is still trying to come to terms with learning about her past and her parents not being who she thought they were.
Lots of twists and turns in this story, never boring. I particularly like the partnership between Iris, a young ambitious detective and Ben Slattery, a much older and cynical old school detective. Although they’ll never be best buddies, they work well together and there is a good mutual respect.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my review.
Book 2 in the Iris Locke series.
The story is slightly different from the blurb as Rachel and Eleanor are not best friends but carer and patient.
The team, especially Iris, are still reeling from the events in book 1 when a call is received that the body of a young woman has been found.
An so begins a story with twists and turns to keep you hooked right to the end.
The description of Corbally and especially the forest made it feel as if you are actually there.
I love how the relationship is developing between Iris and Slattery and look forward to the next book.
Why She Ran is the second book in the police crime series set in Limerick by Geraldine Hogan and like its predecessor it is an entertaining police crime novel with a number of twists and turns.
The police team are faced with a murder and a missing person but who is the real victim?
The story moved along at a good pace & kept me interested throughout

The setting of a rehabilitation centre is perfect for this book. Rachel is a very caring nurse and she is found brutally murdered. When Eleanor Marshall is found missing from this high security centre, she is seen as the obvious suspect but to the detectives on the case this is not so. They feel that Eleanor may have been one of the victims. The fact that Eleanor has epilepsy, needs medication and is on the run does not bode well for her either.
Unraveling the case, we find a dysfunctional family in the form of the Marshalls. Eleanor is their eldest daughter and Karena their second. Kit Marshall is a powerful, influential man in the community and he can buy silence wherever he wishes (including the detective force investigating his daughters disappearance). However, when on further investigation the truth seems to strike close to home it makes the lives of several people more at risk and with the murder of their youngest daughter Karena the detectives know that Eleanor's life is now a high risk one and they should find her before the murderer does.
Very descriptive, with very well developed characters this story was well told.
The Synposis will have reader picking up the book the story will not hold readers attention. Why She Ran is slow paced mystery that lacks focus, the story has many plot holes and readers are left wondering if this was the same book their had wanted to read.
It is a stand a lone novel yet this readers is wondering if the information lacking in book two is found in book 1.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of Geraldine Hogan Why She Ran.
I am so enjoying this series .iris is called to a murder of a young woman who has been murdered with her partner Slattery . a young girl goes missing at curlew hall Eleanor has run when she found the body and her dad is a powerfull man in the community her sister and mum are so worried but how the story unfolds is just brilliant I so enjoying the two main characters in this book so cant wait for book 3
I really enjoyed the first in the series and I think this one was even better. The same great characters are back for this outing with a new gripping mystery. I liked the realistic portrayal of the investigation and how the mystery was unravelled. It can be read as a standalone but I would recommend the first book to give you a better idea.
Why She Ran is the second book in the Detective Iris Locke series, but that did not get in the way of my enjoyment and I rated it 4.5 stars. Enough backstory is provided, without undue spoilers, that I read and enjoyed this as a standalone...but I am very tempted to read the first instalment now. I'm an avid crime reader but found the Irish tones to this gripping thriller and style of the author Geraldine Hogan gave a freshness to this mystery, and I loved the Irish setting. And there is plenty of story in this novel! Detectives Iris Locke and her offsider Slattery are terrific characters with intriguing histories and challenges. But there is plenty of substance to the main storyline in Why She Ran, keeping me intrigued all the way. Eleanor Marshall is a girl from a privileged family who should be enjoying an enviable lifestyle, instead of being locked away with other delinquents. And she should be completely safe. But after the young nurse supervising her is brutally murdered one night, Eleanor absconds. While searchers hunt for her in the woods near the Comeragh mountains, her sister is also killed, and the pressure falls on Detective Iris Locke to piece it all together and show her aptitude for permanent promotion. Who wanted the nurse dead and why? And how does her father's earlier death link in...if at all? Why also kill Eleanor's sister? And is Eleanor herself the murderer or in grave danger? After reading Why She Ran, I am keen for more by this author.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
Detective Iris is called upon to investigate the murder of young woman name Rachel she was caregiver who was well liked. We learn that Rachel befriend a trouble girl name Eleanor who from upstanding wealthy family and we learn that she was running crime the scene and is the only supesct.
As Locke and Slattery are investigating finding Eleanor her sister Karena is adamant that Eleanor couldn't have killed Rachel but when she is find dead the case takes a turn and even though Iris has doubts that Eleanor is the prime suspect, Iris suspect she has to dig in the past to learn who the murder is.
I like the banter between Locke and Slattery and even though first book was engaging more then this one but it's still was a good read.
This is my first book in the series, so the references to the previous book was beyond my understanding. This story is well written with a good plot. Some more focus on the character Eleanor would have made the narrative better. The personal life of the detective could have been shorter. Overall a good book. Definitely recommended.
This is the second book in Geraldine Hogan’s Iris Locke series and the only one I have read so far. It can be read as a stand alone book but I feel as if it might have been better to have read the previous book as I don’t like not knowing answers to my questions!
I liked the characters of Iris and DS Slattery and they were well developed. The banter between them was great and the final couple of chapters really emphasised the bond which they shared.
I did find I was putting this book down a lot as it wasn’t gripping me with the story line. Yes, I wanted to find Eleanor but that was the only reason I kept on reading. I wish there had been more placed on her point of view i.e. more flashbacks as her medication cloud lifted as this would have allowed the plot to have developed more evenly. However, the plot seemed slow to develop and there were too many bits that felt like padding i.e. the death of Rachel’s ‘father’ William etc.
Unless, this became part of Kindle Unlimited or there was a low price for an ebook I don’t think I would want to spend my money on it.
I was pretty excited to start Why She Ran, I really liked Her Sisters Bones and Iris is a great character.
Unfortunately I just couldn’t get into this story. The writing doesn’t flow well and I found myself confused within the first few chapters. After making it over 40% through I just can’t finish it.
This is book two of the Detective Iris Locke series and it’s it’s a good follow up to book one. Iris has been put in charge of a new case involving the brutal murder of a support worker at rehabilitation centre and the disappearance of of a young girl Eleanor who was one of the patients and is the daughter of a rich and important guy in the local community. What follows is a complex story with some good characters, the writing was excellent and we had more of the back story from the previous book. Once again I really liked DS Slattery he is a great character and he and Iris make a great team. It’s a good read and I really enjoyed it although I felt it fell a bit flat towards the end but I will still be on the look out for the next in the series.
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
After such a dramatic ending of the first book, I was expecting more from this series. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite deliver. I found this second book so boring, extremely slow paced and predictable. I skimmed a lot of the book and it was a struggle to finish. A lot of the book was written in way too much detail which made me switch off. I do like Iris and Slattery's characters but there personal lives kind of took over the story. The ending was a bit ridiculous as well. The first book was definitely better.
I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Detective Iris Locke is still reeling from the crack in her family from her last case when she is called to investigate a murder of a 20 year old carer. One of her charges has disappeared and it would seem she is in the frame for murder. Can Locke and her faithful partner, Slattery, solve the case before anyone else is killed?
I enjoyed this and the banter between Locke and slattery is great. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
“Why She Ran” was very slow paced and predictable. The writing was enough to encourage me to finish the story, but it wasn’t the gripping crime thriller I was hoping for.
I found this book to be unexciting and rather slow. The description sounded like it would be a good suspenseful book but there was none. Any of the parts that should have been full of excitement came across as flat. Eleanor was alone and running for her life in the woods yet very little of the book centred on her. Those parts that did left me wanting more description. The police officers had difficult lives yet I couldn’t find any sympathy for them. The plot of the book was great but the characters seemed flat and overall I just didn’t care what happened to them. With some more description and spark this could be a great book.
