Giving this the benefit of the doubt and giving 3 stars, but really more of a 2.5. I received this through NetGalley, but ended up listening to it on audio since it's such a BEAST of a text. I really agree with the general consensus that The Sisters Grimm could have been cut down by 100-150 pages. There was soooo much information that we honestly just didn't need. I genuinely fell in love with the characters, world, and magic system, but the story itself dragged. I really wish it was shorter. I would honestly consider maybe picking this one up from the library and attempting to read it physically. Maybe it would help or maybe I would just get even more frustrated by the unnecessary length. We shall see. Overall, average. It would have been way more had it been cut down and more to the point.
*Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins for an advanced copy!*
I enjoyed this book because it was very witchy to me. I love when women are portrayed as elementals because it seems very empowering. Like you are one with nature and nature is everywhere. Everything is very connected. So my little side tangent asid this book was all about females kicking butt and taking names. I have always been a fan of the Grimm brothers stories and how dark they are and this didn't disappoint. The only confusing part for me was the multiple POVs (there were 9 or 10 I think and they were told in the the past and the present). So while I enjoyed this book it was hard to keep track of when and who was talking.
Really loved the storyline and enjoyed getting to know the characters but it did get confusing at times trying to follow who was speaking or who's point of view I was reading. Would love to get even more backstory and more detail since some parts seemed choppy and rushed through. All in all, a great read and interested to see if it becomes a series or if there are other books from Leo and the soldiers' points of view.
I enjoyed reading several aspects of this book! The pacing was wonderful, characters were well drawn, and the reading experience on the whole was delightful.
Love the cover! Beautiful book on the inside and out. This book offers hope and heartbreak in equal measure. Great ending, can’t wait for the next book.
I was originally drawn to this book because of the beautiful cover. The book did not disappoint and I recommend it.
I've been slowly making my way through this since December. Very slowly. The premise for this is interesting and the cover is gorgeous, but for me it was just really weirdly written and set at a glacial pace. Also warning: incest, sexual assault, child abuse, self-harm, suicidal tendencies, and a bit of explicit content. I liked the idea of girl empowerment, sisterly bonds, and people finding their own voices and what makes them unique. However, none of that was enough to cover the rest of this jumbled mess for me. If you get about 20% in and you're not enjoying it, you're probably not going to.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Voyager for providing me with an e-ARC, however all thoughts and opinions are my own. I'm sorry, I just didn't enjoy it.
This is a amazing book with outstanding imagery. It was a delight to read and I loved the charcters. The author has created a YA novel that appeals to adults to . I highly recommend this book for your reading enjoyment for all who enjoy YA action fantasy . Very well done characterization of all of the charcters . I look forward to the next in series. Very well done to the author.
Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own.
This story builds very slowly and really took me a while to get into it, but once I did I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a very well-written fairy tale about sisterhood. Recommended.
This is book about four young ladies, born to four different women but all have the same father. These four girls are all born between October 31st and November 1st & have powers of different elements. They must choose between being good or evil, if they choose evil then they can join their father but if they choose good then they must fight against him and possibly each other. They each have a warrior that they must defeat or they will perish before meeting their father. And it all comes down to evening of their eighteenth birthday.
I wish there was more development of the characters and everything really. I was really excited to read it but I was hoping that it would develop and we'd find out more information but it was missing a lot. I did enjoy the book for the most part though.
I enjoyed this book and I liked the idea behind different women coming together to find their destiny and to discover who they are. There are some excellent feminist themes in this novel and combining that with the fairytale aspect was right up my alley. Unfortunately, there are lots of POVs in this novel that took me a while to actually get into the book. It definitely took me about 100 pages to get grounded in the novel and figure out who is who and what is going on. I liked the theme of forgotten childhoods and what we leave behind as we grow, which is an underlying theme in a lot of fairytales and I liked the author's take on that idea. Ultimately, I think it could have been shortened just a bit and I wish the characters met a bit earlier in the book, but I did enjoy it and would recommend it to others.
If you like a slow building, dark fairytale with strong women leads, this the book for you. The author takes you on a journey from multiple points of views and across many timelines. It was an interesting and exciting book. A two to three day read. There will be some slow sections so expect it. Overall the plot is solid and will make you wonder if you have or know anyone thats is a sisters grimm.
This book was amazing but what blew me away the most was the atmosphere. I read this book in 24 hours because I didn’t want to leave this mystical and magical place that Menna Van Praag created. I can’t wait to read more by her!
As children, Goldie, Liyana, Scarlet, and Bea dreamed of a strange otherworld: a nightscape of mists and fog, perpetually falling leaves and hungry ivy, lit by an unwavering moon. Here, in this shadowland of Everwhere, the four girls, half-sisters connected by blood and magic, began to nurture their elemental powers together. But at thirteen, the sisters were ripped from Everwhere and separated. Now, five years later, they search for one another and yearn to rediscover their unique and supernatural strengths. Goldie (earth) manipulates plants and gives life. Liyana (water) controls rivers and rain. Scarlet (fire) has electricity at her fingertips. Bea (air) can fly.
To realize their full potential, the blood sisters must return to the land of their childhood dreams. But Everwhere can only be accessed through certain gates at 3:33 A.M. on the night of a new moon. As Goldie, Liyana, Scarlet, and Bea are beset with the challenges of their earthly lives, they must prepare for a battle that lies ahead. On their eighteenth birthday, they will be subjected to a gladiatorial fight with their father’s soldiers. If they survive, they will face their father who will let them live only if they turn dark. Which would be fair, if only the sisters knew what was coming.
So, they have thirty-three days to discover who they truly are and what they can truly do, before they must fight to save themselves and those they love- Goodreads
I struggled with this book pretty early on, which sucks because the story the author was trying to tell was pretty good. But it is boring to say the least. I love the concept that these girls are magical and are able to reach each other in their dreams. I also love the concept that they are completely different people trying to make it in the real world but acknowledge that something is going on with them. The fact that they are able to choose their own path come their 18th birthday does wonders for me.
However, the book drags way too much. The author takes too long building up the novel and some "chapters" are redundant. For instance, it was always they don't know they have powers but they feel something for way too long in the book.
What saved this book was the fact that it was written in different point of views. So you knew what each girl was going through and thinking. I loved it. But again the book was so hard to get through. I wish the author would have done more with the history of this world, more magic.
Another book I was hoping to like more than I did, but that's okay because it gave me some ideas into what kind of books I'd like to read in the future
It took me about a third of the book to get a feel for how the story was organized. I'm not sure a teenager for whom the book is written could stick with it that long, especially if as a younger child had read the Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley.
The Sisters Grimm is a really interesting idea for a story, but I struggled with the pace of this story and found that overall, it just didn't live up to my expectations.
The story features four girls who will be turning 18 soon. As their birthdays draw closer, they begin to remember their long-forgotten history. They are each a Grimm sister and at 18, must fight the evil brothers. It's basically a good vs evil plot with an epic fight at the end. There was an interesting romance twist with one of the evil men falling for one of the girls. I enjoyed that part of the story quite a bit.
The story is told through alternating views from each of the girls and I found it very confusing. It was hard to connect with any of the characters. The timeline jumps back and forth from present-day to each girl's pasts. The chapter's title does tell you where you are in the story, but I still found it very confusing to follow. There are chapters that feature "Everywhere" the battleground for these good vs evil fights, and I really didn't enjoy those chapters.
Overall, I just felt that the idea for this story was great, but the execution of the story fell flat.
I would recommend this book to readers that enjoy a lot of detail in their fantasy stories, as well as readers that like a forbidden love plot.
I was provided an advanced reader's copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
If you’re looking for a long read you can tuck into during quarantine with magical lands and lots of characters, look no further than The Sisters Grimm. Half sisters Goldie, Liyana, Scarlet, and Bea spent their childhood in Everwhere, learning about their magic and growing their powers, but at thirteen, they were ripped from their world and thrust into ours. Now they’ll have to find each other again and work together to return to their homeland and overcome the evil there.
I really liked the characters in this book. Each girl had her own personality and struggles, and I liked how they worked together as individuals. I also enjoyed how each had an affinity for a different element, and those powers still manifested themselves in different ways even in our world.
It was a bit long, as I mentioned before, and I only got to about 40% before I started skimming some parts, but I picked back up devouring each and every word at the end, because I had to know! I think it wrapped up nicely, and I was happy for the epilogue/Legacy part, because the actual story does end pretty abruptly.
This book is perfect for getting lost in the different worlds of the characters as well as Everwhere, but do prepare yourself for a bit of dark. It’s not all fun and games and some people may lose more than they bargained for.
The writing of this book is great. It is a slow story about sisterhood and women’s inner power. It definitely has a fairytale feel throughout.
This felt like it could have benefited from further editing. The set up took so long that I assumed this was going to turn out to have a sequel coming, but instead it turned out that the ending was just incredibly quick. The premise was incredibly interesting and I enjoyed the transformation of the mythologies and fairy tales underpinning the story.
