With her large divorce settlement, Bernadine purchased the small town of Henry Adams, KS, on eBay. (Can you do that?) The town, started by freed slaves in the 19th century, was going downhill, but now it seems like a very pleasant place. (This is #10 in the Blessings series, and since I hadn't read 1-9, I was a bit confused by all the characters at first). There is to be a mayoral election in Henry Adams; Bernadine's nasty ex is backing a shady candidate, and there is a woman running, too, which some are unhappy about. There are a lot of people in town who have made mistakes, especially Mal, and many who have turned their lives around. A satisfying ending concludes this character-driven novel. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
What a quirky group of characters inhabiting this small town in Kansas. Bernadine, following her divorce and settlement from her husband, buys the town off of E-Bay. Since she owns the town, and most of everything in it, it can be run the way she wants it to be. Her ex-husband returns to the area, ready to scam the next bunch of unsuspecting victims. Bernadine has other ideas and has the resources to put a wrench in his plans. A mayoral election, which should have been cut and dried, turns into a circus. Throw in an oil pipeline, desperate farmers, a crooked seed company and a local pig (yes, a hog) who goes to Hollywood and makes it big, and you have the makings of an entertaining story.
This a good bet since it's by a prolific and successful author. This has interesting characters and the right amount of drama/conflict, and a satisfying ending.
I really appreciate the copy for review!
