I received a complimentary copy of In Her Shadow from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Great mystery and thriller! Almost anxiety inducing, the main character almost seems to be stalked by this dead woman's past presence. At every turn, Colleen simply cannot live up to the large shoes she was left to fill. Although I foresaw the huge plot twist, I still enjoyed reading it as it unfolded.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

2.5 stars. This is an entertaining mystery with lots of twists and turns. Colleen, pregnant and in a relationship with her boss, moves into his mansion in a small community where everyone loves his estranged wife, Joanna, who has moved out to live with her sister--or has she? The story kept me reading, although I did guess a lot of the major twists by the time I got to them. I didn't feel like the characters were especially compelling or fleshed out, so overall this was just okay for me.

Colleen is the pregnant girlfriend of Michael, whose pregnant wife disappeared some months earlier. He brings her into their home and leaves her to the tender mercies of theirHousekeeper and Chef, both of whom were still emotionally tied to the missing wife. When I first started reading this novel my thought was “Rebecca”. I was wrong. I won’t go further into the plot, but no one is who they appear to be and everyone has ulterior motives for all of their activities. Each chapter deals with a wide variety of characters and tells part of the story from their viewpoint. It is very well written and well plotted. Thanks to Net Galley and Ballantine Books for an ARC for an honest review.

I could not get into this book. It just seemed to have the same old premise. Woman finds rich guy, woman moves into his home and has no idea how rich he really is and how isolating. Sorry I could not finish this

For the most part I enjoyed this book, but there were a few parts that didn't quite make sense at the end and I'm not sure I loved the ending as a whole. The chapter headings were great though!

This was a pretty good book, I enjoyed the read, I wish it would have had a little more to the ending, It definitely had an end I did not see coming,

This book sucked me right in! And I found myself reaching for a notebook to keep some notes while I read.
Michael is moving his pregnant girlfriend Colleen into the house he once shared with his wife Joanna, who walked out on him. The grand house is cold and the staff hostile. As Colleen tries to settle in she feels like Joanna's presence looms over her.
Then bones are discovered in the grove across the street. Michael falls under the suspicion of the detectives handling the case and Colleen will do anything to help protect her new life.

How could she move into the house he once shared with his wife?
Why is everyone acting weird? Dean, the chef does nothing to hide his dislike of Colleen. Only cooking meals Joanna liked. The housekeeper Samara, giving her Joanna's bathroom robe to wear. Rachel, the next-door neighbor who takes little jabs at her. Even Michael acts a little weird.

I want Colleen to get the heck outta there! Cause I don't trust anyone.

That twist at the end was so good. I never saw it coming.
I hated every time I had to put this book down because I needed to know what was gonna happen next.
So good! You should definitely give this book a read!

One of my favorite books is "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier, which was originally published in 1938. Over 80 years later Kristin Miller's novel, "In Her Shadow" is strangely reminiscent of du Maurier's original Gothic novel. This story centers on a young woman, Colleen Roper, who has an affair with her boss and subsequently becomes pregnant with his child. She is whisked away to his estate, aptly named 'Ravenwood' to start a new life together. This is the home that Michael occupied with his missing wife, Joanna, who has not been seen or heard from in six months.

Colleen finds it very difficult to fit in to this new life. The grandeur of the home and the grounds, while replete in luxurious details, is very overwhelming to her. Additionally, the chef and housekeeper are aloof to Collen and are both immersed in their memories of Joanna and resent her presence. The capacious house also boasts an east and west wing. Michael has locked the doors to the east wing which Colleen also finds strangely unsettling.

Colleen's apprehension is further piqued when bones are found in a shallow grave in the grove across the street. Ultimately it is ascertained that the body is Michael's missing wife, Joanna. The two detectives assigned to the case, realize there are many possible murder suspects as they learn more about Joanna's life. The clues lead to many dead ends and the ultimate reveal is shocking.

This twisty psychological thriller held my attention as I quickly devoured the pages. Many thanks to Netgalley, Ballantine Books and Kristin Miller for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When I first started reading this I was wondering what I was thinking requesting it. This author usually writes romance & now she's shifting to a domestic thriller?! I made a mistake but now I have to read it ha. Well I was so wrong!!

I hate reviews that are a copy/paste of the synopsis that Goodreads/Amazon pastes so I'll give my basic rundown of what this book is about. The book starts with young naive Colleen moving into her new boyfriend Michael's home (um more like a mansion). Colleen is about 5 months pregnant with her new boyfriend's baby, who just so happens to be freshly separated from his WIFE for about the same amount of time that Colleen is into her pregnancy.

Where is the wife Joanna? Well Miller doesn't keep you wondering for too long:) All that comes after she's found though...all the pawns in this story yikes... the 'help' of the home, the neighbors, Michael (how 'good' is Michael "Mr Perfect", well and of course don't forget Colleen. I really liked Colleen for the most of the story she's sweet, genuine & likeable. I think she may be blind & dumb though..or just a doormat? Or is she? Or did her past affect her that much to where she just wants love & doesn't see things so obvious to you and me? I sure did feel for her every time they'd bring up Joanna or compare her to Joanna, especially Raechel & Dean. Just about gave me anxiety for Colleen, Joanna Joanna Joanna. Don't be so nice Colleen, tell them to shut up!

Michael, how do you REALLY feel about your wife leaving?? Are you as nice as Colleen thinks? I couldn't get there with Michael as far as liking his character he was too uninvolved & not much substance (from the author). Besides his narratives it was hard to get a feel for who Michael was & what he looked like. There were some moments in this story that had me smiling & thinking 'finally Michael' has pulled his head out of you know where & stepped up as the sweet husband/dad to be.

Then there are the neighbors Raechel & Travis Martin. Whoa! They could almost have their own book with all of their drama in their literal glass house. I was intrigued by Travis, and Miller did an excellent job of describing him especially compared to Michael's character development. Yeah I think Travis needs his own book :)

Oh and we can't forget about the employees of Ravenwood & the detectives investigating everyone. First there is Dean (the chef at Ravenwood), I just couldn't with him. Even though he was described as being attractive & in his 30's he sounded like an old uptight butler borderline robot. Samara was hard to really like because she's not really in the book much as an integral part but when is she around she sure is weird! I do like how the two detectives were integrated into the story, I don't think it was too much or anything to where it made you forget about the main story/characters, it made them more real & I liked having them inserted more as actual characters. To me it was the perfect balance. I really liked Detective Shaw's character. I feel like he wanted to find out the truth, who really was involved in things & not just close the case, plus he seemed nice & I felt bad for him that he was left widowed he needed a sweet (less dumb) Colleen to come into his life...maybe Shaw needs a book too ;) I'm getting off base here this is a thriller not a happy ending Sandra Brown novel haha.

I suppose I should mention Joanna, all I have to say about Joanna is WOW in all the ways. Not what I expected of her character of how she truly was & how she seemed on the outside.

Overall Kristin did an excellent job of balancing all of the characters & developing all of the characters. I liked Colleen so that definitely helped me with maintaining interest, and so many twists I couldn't stop reading it until I found out who the "bad guy" is & what really happened to Joanna. I didn't guess any of her major twists or villains (besides one minor thing with Mandy the pilates instructor & the pills-like come on detectives this is obvious?!).

If Kristin Miller comes out with another thriller you bet I'll be first in line to read it! She has a new fan :)

Thank you so much to NetGalley & Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for the ARC, so appreciative of the opportunity!

This author was unknown to me but, will now be on my auto-buy list.
Colleen and Michael are in love and pregnant.
Michael brings Colleen to his massive estate to live but every time she turns around, Michael's wife Joanna, who disappeared six months ago, is thrust in her face==by the cook, the housekeeper, their neighbors and, Michael himself!
Then, Joanna's body is found less than a block from their house.
Who murdered this 5 month pregnant woman? Unfortunately, there is a list of possibilities, with Michael at the head of that list.
What's Colleen going to do? She loves Michael and, will do anything to keep their marriage together but, she's fighting an uphill battle
The pace of this book is blindingly fast but, so worth keeping up with. It's a roller coaster ride that you can't wait to see the end of and, you won't know whodunit until the very end!!!

"In Her Shadow" by Kristin Miller was a great read. The story is told by a few different characters and the suspense lasts right to the end. I think that this book will appeal to a wide variety of readers, especially those looking for a good mystery.

From the very first page you get a creepy twisted vibe. It keeps you guessing until the shocking conclusion. This is my first book by this author and it is also her first attempt at this genre. She did a excellent job that will definitely have me coming back for more.
Coleen is pregnant by Michael. He brings her to his huge estate Ravenwood where he lived with his wife until she disappeared. Feeling unwelcome and overshadowed by his missing wife Coleen tries to find out the truth. Infidelity, lies and manipulation is all front and center throughout. Great Who Done It!!

A new girlfriend who’s left in the dark and also in the shadow of her boyfriend’s ex is an awkward place to be. Add in a murder and too many suspects and it can be quite dangerous to boot! The characters Miller created are unique and clever, the plot twists and intrigues and the chapter titles are ominous enough to keep you from putting the book down. You may think you’ve got this one figured out, but you’d be wrong. Well done to the last page!

"In Her Shadow" was a great book. The book starts with Colleen Roper’s murder and then goes back a week to tell the story of how the murder comes about. Five months pregnant and advised that she needs bedrest for the health of the baby, Colleen is brought to the home of her boyfriend, Michael Harris, for the first time. She was not expecting the home to be a mansion. Making it more unsettling, the east wing of the mansion is closed up, with locked doors, and Michael is still employing the personal chef and housekeeper from when he and his wife,Joanna, lived there before she abruptly left him six months ago. The day after Colleen moves in, Joanna’s body is found buried in a grove of trees not far from Ravenwood, Michael’s home. The police are immediately suspicious of Michael, especially since there was an incident of domestic violence the day before Joanna's abrupt departure, he has a sizeable life insurance policy on Joanna, his business, Harris Financial, is in financial trouble, and because Colleen is his former personal assistant and is five months pregnant, meaning this new relationship began soon after his wife left. As the police try to figure out who the murderer is, with one detective convinced it is Michael but lacking sufficient evidence for an arrest, secrets start coming out involving Joanna, Michael, the household staff, and the next door neighbors, Travis and Rachael Martin (with Travis the head of marketing at Harris Financial).

The author does a great job of revealing information in such a way as to keep the reader guessing about the identity of the killer. This book has one of the best plot twists and surprise endings I have read in quite a while; it is masterful. I would definitely recommend this book.

I received a review copy of the e-book via NetGalley.

I will leave a review on Amazon or B&N on April 21, 2020

In Her Shadow wow what a twisted story, this was a fast paced read and once I got reading I couldn't put it down. My first book by this author but this is one of my favorite genres and I will definitely be reading more of her books. I so didn't see the final outcome. I would certainly recommend this book to those that enjoy psychological thriller.

I received an Advanced Readers Copy from NetGalley and the publisher, and this is my fair and honest review.

It's a hard one for me to review because I sure don't want to spoil it. The ending caught me off-guard. I mean that in a good way! Invest the time; so worth it.

This was a page-turning psychological thriller, reminiscent of Daphne DuMaurier's Rebecca, with a surprising twist at the end. The setting is an elite neighborhood in Point Reina, a suburb of Half Moon Bay on the northern California coast; the fog-enshrouded Cypress trees and stormy coastline add to the haunting atmosphere.
The story is told in first person from multiple viewpoints:
Colleen Roper is the young, pregnant girlfriend of her former boss, Michael Harris. She's madly in love but out of her element when he brings her to Ravenwood; the eerie similarities to Manderley are not lost on her. The staff, and even Michael, seem to have made the mansion a shrine to Joanna, Michael's estranged wife. (Hence the title, "In Her Shadow.")
Michael is a type-A, controlling, hot-tempered young business owner whose secret financial troubles are about to end when he can collect the proceeds of a life insurance policy on Joanna, who we learn had multiple affairs and a few secrets. Apparently Joanna abruptly left Michael 6 months earlier., but shortly after the story opens, her body is found in a grove of Cypress trees across the street from Ravenwood. Michael is the prime suspect in her murder.
Rachel is a Point Reina neighbor who was Joanna's best friend until she found out Joanna was having an affair with her husband, Travis, another volatile and controlling man. Both Rachel and Travis are suspects.
Detective Shaw, still reeling from the death of his beloved wife, is assigned to investigate the murder mystery. Despite his partner's desire to wrap up this high-profile case quickly, Shaw is concerned with tying up every loose end.
Getting pieces of the story from various viewpoints gave the reader better insights into each character.
