This one will absolutely haunt readers. It's more police procedural than suspense, but the horrors are still prevalent and down right scary!
Meg Gardiner is easily one of my new favorite authors. Her writing is not only consuming, it puts you right into the story and makes it feel like you’re living it. To be honest, I could not read this at night for the first couple days. This was such a great suspenseful read that I am very excited for the 4th book.
3.5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐💫
I really enjoyed the first two books in the UNSUB series so I was beyond excited to dive into The Dark Corners of the Night. I found the beginning was not entirely gripping, and I ended up putting the book down a few times before finally picking it up again to read a good chunk of it. In short, the beginning was too slow.
However, I am glad that I did decide to really give this installment a chance because the plot did start to move forward at a good pace and I became more and more interested in the story, the characters, and the case. As the story developed it became more dark, tense, and suspenseful.
If you like gritty Police/FBI procedurals, you might enjoy this series. For maximum enjoyment I would personally recommend reading them in written order.

Where do I even start with this book? I'm a super big fan of Meg Gardiner, however, the last book in the UNSUB series, Into the Black Nowhere was not a favorite of mine, so I had a little trepidation going into The Dark Corners of the Night, however, those feelings were quickly overcome! I was able to get right into the story and kept with it throughout all of it, just as interested in the beginning as I was the end!
This story is not like any other that you may read. Who is the UNSUB and will Caitlin and the team be able to deliver the correct profile and catch the bad person before it's too late? I think it's safe to say that this story has a lot of highs and lows, ups and downs, and mouth dropping moments that will leave you reeling through the end of the book!
Caitlin is one bad chick! These are the characters that I live for! The ones that don't take anything from anyone and have the ability to scare grown men! But in this book we see a softer side to her and I like that just as much!
I sure hope there's more to come for this UNSUB series because it has become a great one to hang on to! I look forward to more greatness from you Ms. Gardiner!
I would like to thank the author, Meg Gardiner, the Publisher, Blackstone Publishing, and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.
I really enjoyed this! It started slow and I had put it down for a couple of weeks, but once it really picked up I ended up flying though it to finish. It was really good and the killer in this book is incredibly smart and stealthy. I really liked the way it went and how it turned out. And that epilogue! I’m so glad I’m continuing to enjoy this series.
Meg Gardiner's UNSUB series is a must read for crime lovers.
The Dark Corners of the Night brings the thrills, chills and deep insight into profiling that we've come to love from Gardiner. Caitlin Hendrix is one of my favourite protagonists. She's smart, story and vulnerable all at the same time. In this installment, she's called to LA to investigate the Midnight Man, a serial killer who enters homes and kills parents, leaving the children behind.
I loved the exploration of of the profiling process. You can tell the research and detail that Gardiner has put into the book. The killer has shades of different real life criminals, which is something I love when I read.
While it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading them in order to get the character development and relationships between the characters.
This is a top notch read for lovers of the genre and if you are a fan of Criminal Minds, you must read this series!
FBI Behavioral Analyst Caitlin Hendrix has been sent to Los Angeles to help investigate the serial killer, called The Midnight Man. He sneaks into houses in the middle of the night . kills the parents, but leaves children unharmed except for being terrorized. His attacks have escalated and Caitlin will have to relive her past in order to fix the present.
This is a roller coast of a ride, with twists and turns that swirl menacingly through a well written plot and deftly defined characters. Caitlin is a great character .... a dedicated profiler, seemingly unafraid, and what she does best is hunt serial killers. She wants justice for the victims.
The suspense starts at the very beginning and the pace is held steady until the surprising, unexpected conclusion. Although 3rd in the series, this can easily be read as a stand alone. I do recommend reading in order, though.
Many thanks to the author / Blackstone Publishing / Netgalley for the digital copy of this riveting crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own .
The third in the UNSUB series is an extraordinary thriller. This series grows to new heights in this tense plot that oulls no punches. Just the right level of tension & action throughout, dripping with authenticity.
I’m already a Meg Gardiner and UNSUB series fan, so The Dark Corners of the Night was on my 2020 radar already and high on my wishlist!
The UNSUB series novels each stand on their own, echoing familiar, known high profile serial killer cases and all centralizing around our heroine, Caitlin Hendrix. Suspense and crime fiction fans will definitely enjoy this series and should start reading Meg Gardiner immediately if they haven’t already.
And now, Meg Gardiner has done it again! The Dark Corners of the Night has the slow build, with constantly increasing suspense that leads to a break-neck paced ending that the other books in the series also feature. We still get the Caitlin we know and love, but while prior books were suspenseful police procedurals, I’d call The Dark Corners of the Night more of a detailed, character study and profiler procedural than the first two novels.
If you’ve read Gardiner’s other UNSUB novels you should definitely grab a copy of The Dark Corners of the Night. If you have yet to start the series, while this book could absolutely stand on its own, I’d recommend starting with the first book in the series, UNSUB.
3.5 Stars
I stopped and started this a few times a few months ago, not able to get into it. Finally picked it back up and I'm glad I did.
Enjoyed the police procedural parts. The geographic profiling was fascinating. The case was hard to read because of the brutality, killing the parents and leaving the kids behind was tough to read about. The ending pursuit dragged for me and I had to skim a bunch to get through it.
I have to say the romance is my least favorite part of this series. The continued close relationship Sean has with his ex, yes I know they have a kid together, but they're like best friends. I'd constantly be questioning whether they're going to get back together or not too, just like Caitlin.

Blackstone Publishing and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of The Dark Corners of the Night. I voluntarily chose to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
This book is part of the UNSUB series featuring FBI behavioral analyst Caitlin Hendrix. I was not aware of that fact when signing up to read this book, though I did find that I did not feel lost during the reading. There are broad strokes given to the background, which I can assume is the general content of the two previous books. The character development is a bit lacking in The Dark Corners of the Night, though that can be attributed to the placement of the book in the series.
The central case, an UNSUB who calls himself the Midnight Man, is interesting with good investigative developments to move the plot along. The part of the book that I did not like was regarding Caitlin, which is a problem because she is the main character. The mentioning of her personal flaws and the stalking by what seems to be a previous foe muddy the story and take away from the main plot. Flaws make a person more human, but one particular one seems more gimmicky than realistic. Overall, The Dark Corners of the Night was a fast read, but I am hesitant to recommend it for the above reasons.
MEg Gardiner has done it again! She is such a phenomenal thriller writer & I just adore her books. A fabulous addition to the unsub series
I waited so long for this book (since the last one came out!) and it did not disappoint! This series from Meg Gardiner is my absolute favorite thriller series. It’s fast paced and impossible to put down. If you love Criminal Minds, you’ll love this book. But I do think it’s necessary to read this series in order as they all end on cliffhangers! Can’t wait to see what she publishes next! Five stars
Meg Gardner does it again with her 3 installment in The Unsub series. I absolutely love this series. It is a must read. It is as if you are reading an episode of Criminal Minds. It has all the perfect elements dark, creepy, and a murderer is on the loose. Well done again, well done!
Another solid entry in the Caitlin Hendrix series! In a plot seemingly inspired by the Golden State Killer, Caitlin hunts a monster who preys on families in their seemingly safe suburban homes. While I do think some of the scenes of Caitlin dealing with her PTSD from past books were stretched a little too long, the chapters from the killer's POV really sped things along. I can't wait to read the next installment in this series!
A police procedural to catch a psychopath who is killing parents and terrorizing their children. A bit too much psycho babble at times from the BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit) that kind of dragged things down for me. Other than that, likable characters and lots of action. I read this not realizing it was the third book in the series, but it worked well as a stand-alone.
I've been a big fan of Meg Gardiner's UNSUB series since the first book came out a few years back, so I was eagerly anticipating the newest book in the series, The Dark Corners of the Night.
Like the others, this book follows FBI behavioral analyst Caitlin, who is on a new case for a serial killer they've dubbed 'The Midnight Man', as he breaks into houses of families in the middle of the night and kills the parents, leaving the children alive. We jump right into the action with this one, so I was hooked from the very beginning!
This installment of the series focused more on the police side of things - we see Caitlin in action trying to determine who the killer is more than we see the crime scenes. You can tell Gardiner has really done her research - the procedural parts of the book came across very knowledgeable and well written.
I finished the book in just a few hours, and am already eager for the next book, which seems to be set up to tie in some of the storylines from the earlier books, which is exciting! The only thing I wish I could have seen more of in this book was a better understanding of why our killer was the way they were, and more about their motives. There was a lot of symbolism the killer used, and the meaning of those things was discussed throughout the book, but I was wishing some of those pieces could have been wrapped up slightly neater. That said, I rated the book 4.5 stars!
Meg Gardiner has done it again! Engrossing and very well written, The Dark Corners of the Night is the perfect mystery novel. It grabs you from the very beginning and does not let go until the very end.
The story is about a serial killer who comes for the parents and leaves the children unharmed. FBI behavioral analyst Caitlin Hendrix has come to Los Angeles to assist in the Midnight Man investigation and do what she does best—hunt a serial killer.
This is one of those thriller you cannot stop reading. Highly recommend!!
Closer to a 2.5 than a 3-star. If you like police procedurals/thrillers with a heavy-dose of Mindhunter psycho-babble, then you will love this book. For me, this was four pounds of stuffing inside a two-pound turkey: too many carbs and not enough protein. I could add that the serial killer fits my "improbable" profile, but I will concede the series of events as plausible. The recurring cop figures are stereotypical and subplots such as romantic relationships receive cursory treatment. Still, the narrative can be compelling at times due to the nature of the crimes, but if you're like me you'll be flipping pages of toasted bun to get to the burger.
So behind on my reviews and I hope I can remember enough to write out something coherent! :)
I really enjoy this series and this one was just as good as the first two but I think at the time I read it I wasn't in the mood so it took longer than it should have.
It starts out with an explosion dealing with the Ghost (if you have read the other books in the series you will know what that means), and someone Caitlin knows was severely injured. Caitlin has been dealing with the person calling himself the Ghost since the end of the first book I believe.
Now it's been about six months and she is still dealing with what happened during the bombing but she has a new case so she heads to Los Angeles to help profile a case. There has been some murders where I man comes in late at night and kills the parents and leaves the kids unharmed. He talks to the kids and writes things on the wall. He calls himself the Midnight Man.
This case is hard for Caitlin to deal with since it involves families and especially when they find out who they think it could be, not that she knows killer but his profile. It's hard to explain without spoilers.
Anyway, this case takes a toll on Caitlin and the whole team as the killer starts to escalate before they can find him. Some things happen with one of the families he was going to kill and it starts to make him spiral out of control. Things are just really hitting Caitlin hard. There are some side things that are going on with what happened to her friend in the bomb, also her boyfriend Sean and sometimes I got irritated at Caitlin a bit. Can't really put myself in her shoes to know if she should really act that way, so it just irritated me.
This book did have some pretty good twist and turns along the way and at one point I was surprised at where it was headed, so I really did enjoy this even though I felt like it took me a while to get through it! :)
I do recommend you read these books in order because of the overarching story with The Ghost and they are just to good not to read! :)
