This book was written in a way I have never read before! It was scattered and jumped around in the same manner of my thoughts. It was funny and weird and I enjoyed every minute of it!
The story was confusing and misleading at first, then everything was clear. It was a great read and it makes me want to seek out other books by this author. It very much stood out against the other books that just seem like the same story told in only a slightly altered way- it was a refreshing change. I think I might want to read it again!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read such a great book!
I really tried, I gave it my best shot, but I really could not get into this book. The back and forth was making me dizzy and the writing did not help. The child spoke like an adult, and while I know intelligent children, this didn’t ring true. This book could do with a new editor’s perspective as the premise was a good one, just poorly executed.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
This was a light-hearted, hungriest romp through Venice. Rake and Blake, twin multimillion dollar playboys, are night and day different. Rake wakes up hungover and confused discovers he is in Venice, with no money, no phone and an odd cast of characters, including a young girl who may just be his daughter. Claire Delaney is a street-smart woman who has always has to look out for herself and is up to whatever is gonna with Rake up to her ears. I liked the story and it was an very enjoyable read. Maryjanice Davidson is always enjoyable as an author, love her books.
I did finish this book, even though I was very tempted to put it down several times. The premise of this story is interesting but the execution missed the mark. While there were some laugh-out-loud funny parts, the writing style ultimately proved too distracting for me to enjoy this book. The characters were caricatures and the story trudged along so slowly….
The result was a storyline buried in the extreme.
Wealthy twin Rake wakes up in Venice (he’s from California), soon meets Delaney and then Lillith ...who might be his daughter. The story evolves as they get to know each other and try to figure out what has happened to Rake's identity, money, etc. It was a bit torturous looking for more and it just wasn't there.
I tried with this book multiple times, I am someone who devours books in hours or days when reading. I wanted to love this book, I was intrigued by the plot line and the idea but it fell flat for me. I felt like some chapters and parts were hard to follow and the thoughts were a bit scattered . I did enjoy the ending but overall the story line and the characters were hard to connect to. I appreciate the early read from Net Galley.
The Love Scam by MaryJanice Davidson was a cute, quick read that would make for a good beach read while sipping a spritzer. The romance between Rake and Claire didn't connect with me as much as I would have liked it to, so this book fell a little short of my expectations. The varying storylines were a bit hard to conceive at times and I thought it needed a bit of redirection in some spots. Overall, this was a cutesy read that had some funny spots.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I really did try with this one. I love the Undead and Unwed series by MaryJanice Davidson, but unfortunately for me, her other books just miss the mark. The writing style with its constant interruptions and side notes was tedious instead of fun. The plot moves ridiculously slow and very little information gets shared about the characters and what is happening to them.
This book was a really big let down.
I went into this book super excited. I love con books with romance. But, unfortunately, this fell flat for me. The romance seemed too much on top of all the “comedy”. I was hoping I would love this book as I adored the Undead series from this author years ago. Thank Netgalley for giving me this chance to read this book prior to its release.
I received an E-book ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions are mine and mine alone! This book is about a wealthy and carefree bachelor,Rake Tarbell, who wakes up hungover in Venice, Italy with no money, no family or friends, as well as no memory of how he arrived in Venice. But what he does wake up to is a girl named Lilith, who claims to be his long lost daughter and Claire Delaney, a mysterious woman who has brought Lilith with her to find Rake. Claire Delaney is a woman, who is strong, witty, with just a little bit of mischief, so she has no sympathy for the problems for a spoiled man-child she perceives Rake to be. But will the days and nights searching for answers to the mysteries behind Rake's missing money and presence in one of the world's most romantic city's draw Rake and Claire closer together?
Overall, this book was amazing! It hit all the marks I am looking for in a romantic comedy! The characters were well developed especially Rake and his brother, Blake. I loved the character development of Rake as well as the transformation the reader is able to see throughout the adventures the characters go through. The romance between Claire and Rake was pure comedy. The chemistry was built up well and believable. I had to keep reading in order to figure out the mysteries surrounding not only Rake and his missing money, but also Claire and her work. The pacing of the story was good and loved the little add-ins the author included within the story. It made the reader feel the author was not just writing a story, but talking directly to the readers. The ending of the story felt a little too convenient to me, but it was wrapped up nicely! Overall, I would highly recommend this book to those who love a great romantic comedy with an over the top male main character and a strong female! I can't wait to read more by this author!
Thanks, NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this title. My first time reading this author's work and have to say it was difficult to follow while the premise was intriguing the completion just fell flat. I really wanted to like this story
This book was scattered and hard to follow.....it had it’s funny points but over all I was disappointed.
This book worked for me, and here's what I liked:
1. The cover is cute and drew me in.
2. Funny dialogue, funny inner monologues, and lots of comedy. I was often smiling.
3. A theme of taking care of the underdog and being helpful.
4. The idea and importance of family.
5. The three main characters (Lillith, Delaney, and Rake).
Here are some considerations:
1. I would consider this a funny story (almost a caper) before a love story. It reminded me a bit of P.G. Wodehouse stories. The romance is there, but didn't seem like the main plot line. Very quirky characters and writing style.
2. Lots of inner monologue that might be hard to follow- I enjoyed it, but it's probably not for everyone.
3. This is an over-the-top story and not reality based at all; I am totally fine with that- this was a silly, sweet escape read for me. If you are looking for something that feels real-life, this is not it. IF you are looking for a feel-good laugh and a smile, this will fit the bill.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin for an advance digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Challenging writing style that makes this a difficult read. Odd formatting, maybe in an attempt to denote the ongoing, somewhat confusing, inner dialogue. Almost felt like it was better suited to be a script than a book?
I could get into the story, I believe, if the above pieces were addressed. For now, it took WAY too much effort to stay on track with plot and characters.
This book is too confusing. I had to stop reading. I’m suprised considering her books are usually a good read. I give this book to two stars because there’s some humor in it, but I had to stop reading.
**** I received an ARC for my honest review.******
The other half of the story to Danger, Sweetheart. The 2 books takes place simultaneously, interesting plot lines that divide the set of rich twins brothers and set them each on their own humorous and adventure filled path.
I am incredibly lost with this book. I am five chapters in and I’m so frustrated with these characters and I don’t really know what’s going on. This back and forth with the timeline is incredibly difficult to follow and there are conversations between characters that I can’t follow because I don’t know whats going on. I can’t keep reading this book, I am flustered and it doesn’t make and sense. The short description is way better than the five chapters I have read. If I purchased this book I would be asking for my money back, just needs to have a better flow.
I received an advance copy of this book. The story had a lot of potential. It however jumped around a lot and was confusing at times. Parts of the book were drawn out it could of been shorter. I found it confusing that the twins in the story were Rake and Blake. The book had the foundation there for a excellent story but was very predictable and did not wrap up lose ends to various subplots in the story.
As I was reading this novel, I was thinking how much it would suit it to be turned into a movie!
Funny, quirky and very romantic!
Highly recommend!
So painful to read. The only reason I finished it is because I have a personal motto to finish every book i start. The book had promise but could not deliver. The characters of Rake, Delaney, and Lilith were funny and interesting but the constant inner dialogue was too much. The writing was too hard to follow at times and I just struggled to care about this book.
Add this book to your summer beach bag. The Love Scam was an everything you ever wanted kind of read: mystery, adventure, comedy, love, sex it has it all. The authors style made Love Scam hard to put down. Some descriptions where queasy-funny like when Rake is talking about vermouth being the devil’s urine or the taste of vermouth barf from drinking too much. Another was Rake’s hangover and not knowing if he had a headache or if his brain was trying to eject from his skull in self-defense. Lots of fun and a great read.
