What a tribute to a life of sweet ,salt, savory love of food. The people who make food. The dedication it takes to excel in this craft. As a fan I have found her easy to follow. She encourages the novice and challenges the experienced. The fudge sauce alone is with the purchase price.
5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging recipes & foolproof directions from the true 'Queen of Cake'

I've been a dedicated fan of Maida's since I inherited my mom's batter-spattered copy of the original and classic "Book of Great Desserts" (which I still have), and am so happy that fresh compilations including "Chocolate is Forever" are now available for a new generation of bakers to discover and enjoy.
In addition to Maida's singular voice -- authoritative, warm, enthusiastic and vibrant, especially in the recipe headnotes -- her carefully-written, scrupulously-detailed directions are a hallmark of her books, reassuring to novices and helpful to experienced bakers alike.
Many of Maida's trademark specialties from back in the day are here, including Palm Beach Brownies and Queen Mother's Cake, along with other personal favorites (the bourbon- and coffee-addled 86-Proof Chocolate Cake never disappoints, and her Frozen Chocolate Mousse is a make-ahead dream for a special dinner party dessert).
A truly indispensable and timeless dessert book (along with "Happiness is Baking" & "Cookies are Magic").
A wonderful book on how to make so many delicious chocolate foods! I would definitely recommend this book to other at home baking novices, those who adore chocolate or people who have children that enjoy eating/making chocolatey things!
This seems like a really great book & I would have loved to review it. Unfortunately, the formatting on my review copy was an issue and I couldn't get the file to open. I am a huge baker & I really wish I could read & review it.
Maida Heatter's recipes are wonderful little time capsules, and her baking guidance is thorough. The recipes are trustworthy, and produce some of the best cakes I have ever baked or eaten
This book is a chocolate lover's dream, and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend this book and have absolutely fallen in love with it.
I'd like to thank the publisher and netgalley for providing me a copy of this book.
Chocolate is indeed forever!
I highlighted this on instagram and instagram stories and tagged the publisher appropriately as part of the Voracious program
Some pretty amazing looking recipes in here. I like the little glossary in the front that walks you through using all the ingredients and equipment before you start, and the little illustrations throughout the book are super cute.
This book looked so good, I could eat it. The chocolate options were a nice collection of classics, both traditional and new twists. The commentary alongside the recipe made it more personable. I would recommend this book for any chocolate lover and/or dessert lover.
Chocolate is Forever is the second cookbook from pastry chef, Maida Heatter that I've looked at. I like the variety in this cookbook focused on Chocolate. Recipes for cookies, cake, brownies, fudge and even chocolate syrup to make a variety of different drinks.
I like the descriptions of how the recipes came about and where she first saw her inspiration for each recipe.
I do find some of the recipes to be a bit long and detailed and many won't suit the casual baker just because of the required speciality ingredients and specific bakeware.
Overall a decent chocolate cookbook for any chocolate lovers out there.
Thanks to Netgalley.com and Little Brown & Company for this complimentary eARC.
*received a free copy from netgalley for honest review* I really love how this book goes over so many techniques! I want this book in my kitchen at the very least for that I don't think ive read another cookbook with *that* much info on how to do things the book is going to call for! (also love the bowls used in the art, they look like my mom cooking bowls!) Loved the art, simple but cute! and this book has so many different recipes! Many new ones (gonna have to try the chocolate pumpkin one lol), Definitely going to buy this book though!!
Maida Heatter is one of my favorite cookbook authors and this is just the most recent reason to love her. Recipes are clear and detailed and the results are confidence and deliciousness. Her books provide a course for home bakers to gain expertise and experience in new techniques. For me, chocolate is a food group, and this book is an indulgence I will visit often.
Chocolate Is Forever by Maida Heatter
I defy anyone to resist the title, Chocolate Is Forever. We are addicts for chocolate. Anyway it is a known aphrodisiac (if you play your cards right).
Maida Heatter (1916-2019) was once called the Queen of Cake and authored many books on cake making and baking. Her 50 year career has given readers of her recipes the confidence that she is out there with the best. She won three James Beard Foundation awards. If you didn’t know and you are English, The James Beard Foundation Awards are annual awards presented to recognize culinary professionals in the United States.
Like us, her passion was for chocolate and she created many delicious recipes using chocolate in the form of cakes, candies, classics, desserts, biscuits, sauces (and 19 drinks). Chocolate Is Forever, in its 304 illustrated pages, has taken the best, (nearly 100) of the most deliciously irresistible chocolate finger lickin recipes you will ever get your sticky fingers on. I liked her easy style of writing.
What I liked to hear is that she guarantees that each recipe will work perfectly every time. I have done enough recipe book hurling in my time when the recipe fails, just before an important dinner party! However, buyer beware, the book has no photos, only beautiful illustrations.
It will certainly be one for my cookery book cupboard. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like chocolate.

I didn't notice the archive date when I downloaded it, but it was only a day later, so I didn't get much of a chance to study it. The little I saw was not as intriguing as I had expected. Too much fluff and not enough recipes for me.
In the baking world, Maida Heatter is a beloved icon. After her death at 103 years old in 2019, a new cookbook by Heatter has been released, and, like everything Heatter has done in the past, the recipes are excellent. Chocolate Is Forever: Classic Cakes, Cookies, Pastries, Pies, Puddings, Candies, Confections, and More is one of those “must have” cookbooks for chocolate lovers. Not only are the recipes easy to follow, but there is an introduction at the top of each recipe with Heatter's comments, which gives readers and bakers a sense of her wonderful personality. It seems she entertained famous chefs and celebrities, but still stayed humble and adorable, while baking amazing treats.
This is the only cookbook chocolate lovers need to have on their shelves. It contains everything chocolate and more, covering cakes, cookies, candies, puddings, pies, tarts, and chocolate specialty desserts. This cookbook is awesome, and offers something for everyone who loves chocolate (and who doesn’t). There is also a chapter that covers important basics such as equipment, ingredients, and methods that help even veteran bakers improve.
This cookbook includes some of Heatter’s most famous recipes, like Queen Mother’s Cake and her Brownies. Although almost everything in the cookbook is a dessert, there is also a recipe for delicious Chocolate Bread.
Heatter was dubbed “The Queen of Cakes” by Saveur, and won several distinguished awards during her lifetime. Although there are no photographs in this cookbook, there are delightful illustrations. Knowing who the author was, bakers will know that every recipe will be beautiful and delicious. This cookbook belongs on the bookshelf of every serious baker and every chocoholic.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
Chocolate Is Forever: Classic Cakes, Cookies, Pastries, Pies, Puddings, Candies, Confections, and More is a great book, full of wonderful recipes and much more. Who doesn't like chocolate? Chocolate Is Forever includes not only recipes, but also inside stories that take place over Maida Heatter 50 year career. The drool making recipes are easy to follow, and I have already picked out a few recipes to try. If you enjoy chocolate of all types, I highly recommend this wonderful book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is one of a few republications of Maida Heatter's wonderful recipes. Her recipes are always wonderful and it is especially nice to see them being republished and shared with the a new audience. However, there are a few recipes that seem to appear in all of the books coming out now, with little that it is new. It would have been been great to improve on the originals by including step by step illustrations. I understand the desire to keep with the line drawings of the originals books but baking can be complex and showing, rather than just describing, would help bakers of all abilities.
4 chocolate-y STARS ★★★★✩
This book is for you if… you would like to have only one but a very rich source to look to when craving chocolate or searching for ideas to put chocolate easter bunnies and Santa Clauses to use.
⤐ Overall.
As the Title of Chocolate is Forever already suggests, you can find a wide variety of recipes in here, featuring cakes, cookies, pastries, pies, puddings, candies, confections and more. Although it's kind of obvious when you think about it, few people pay attention to baking with chocolate outside of cakes and cookies even though there are super easy and delicious recipes out there to make your own pralines to gift or treat yourself with or quick pastries to serve during family dinners.
Not only recipes but also cooking techniques and important things to consider before and during the process of baking are part of this extensive baking book. Most people just think they can forego specific instruction and then...well act very whiny and surprised when things don't turn out the way they do in the original recipe.
I was honestly missing the fruity content in this book and that is really the only criticism I can bring to the table.

Many thanks to Maida Heatter, Veracious and NetGalley, who provided me with this physical copy / audiobook / eArc in exchange for an honest review.
This cookbook is filled with basic recipes meant to help the beginning baker but I really did not like that this draft did not contain any actual photographs of the content.
Okay... do you want to know a secret? I normally HATE chocolate. I don't know why, I just don't... but this book changed that for me. The recipes in the book are delicious and are made so that they are easy to follow, even following a personal touch that makes the recipes more personable.
I overall loved the opportunity to try something entirely new.
