So this is one of those yes and no books. It was fast paced and I loved the characters but on the other hand I think it was way to long and the secondary plot lines just didn't fit.

I struggled with this book. It was a great attempted at a YA Thriller and the pace was excellent but the content felt exaggerated. I had the impression the author tried to cram a lot of stuff into the book at it made it less believable. A Bisexual main character that is a high school PI, her murdered ex is a strong, feminine activist of color, her grandfather is ex-intelligence, the mysterious VT was a dancer at Julliard who dropped out and says he literally joined the circus.

Honestly, the angst of the main character is a little grating but hey, she's a teenager and not a deal breaker, but the more I read I found myself giving a few eye rolls. I wanted Flora to be a strong character and when she was looking for clues it was easy to root for her.

For YA novels, character development can be tricky and ultimately, these characters were a bit outside the box of believable for me. I was looking forward to an LGBTQ YA book and am a bit disappointed that I wan't enjoying You're Next like I had thought I would at the beginning.

Wow! This was such a great book! I really loved the main character, Flora. She is deeply flawed, but so relatable. I enjoyed the complexities in her relationships with the other characters (though some moments were heart-wrenching!). The story is tightly-plotted and full of action. It's one I'll be thinking about for a long time to come!

I really enjoyed You're Next. It was a fast paced mystery that will keep you guessing until the end. With the way things ended, I am hoping for a sequel.

Loved it! The writing lends itself to quick page turning and I really loved how the MC's key friendship unfolds. Can't wait to read the author's next book.

If you grew up reading Nancy Drew and watched Veronica Mars, you'll like this book. I wish this existed during my teen years. It's not the perfect book but it was a fun read.

If you are looking for a fast paced, suspenseful mystery/thriller for your young adult, look no farther. Flora is a teenager who feels like she has to be a detective. Because her meddling in one case caused a killer to go free, she wants to help victims now even more. This is well written, maybe a little far fetched but overall a good, tight mystery which reads fast and keeps you engaged.
Thanks to NetGalley, Jimmy Patterson Books and Kylie Schachte for the advanced copy in exchange for a fair review.

This book was excellent. The perfect book for anyone interested in a fast paced mystery/thriller. The characters were fleshed out and a good plot unique. I would definitely recommend!

I enjoyed this novel but I’m giving it 4 stars for two specific reasons. First, the main character, Flora, could not accomplish all that she did as a 16 year old. I realize it is fiction, but it has to be believable. Second, there were references to a first case which made this feel like a sequel. It concerned me that Flora rarely slept, and missed a great deal of school to be a crime fighter. But truly, those things aside, You’re Next was a good novel. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to be an early reader in exchange for my review.

It was a great mystery with strong, complex characters - things didn't just wrap up happily ever after either. Which is fine. However, there's a bit of a logic issue with how the big shocker at the end did/when it had time to happen within the timeline. There were a couple of big plot holes - that being one of them (and I can't mention part of why because it'd be a big spoiler about the climax), but there's also the bit at the beginning where the main character decides not to take the car and states her reasoning for why, but then it's never mentioned again. You'd think that would have a HUGE impact on the amount of guilt she was feeling - choosing to ride her bike across town instead of taking the car, and what happened. But it's just not mentioned. So why even mention that she had the option of taking the car? Make up an excuse that she's afraid of driving at night or can't see well or something.
Besides these couple of (big) things, the book is strong and holds well and is a quick read. I think I finished in two days. I would recommend it but these are issues that should have been caught in development.

I absolutely loved this fast-paced and engaging novel. Young readers who are fans of crime fiction will devour this story. Schachte does a phenomenal job of presenting a detective procedural that is grounded in the world and issues of YA readers. The ending is incredible and will have readers begging for more! Highly recommended.

It was a nice try at a young adult thriller, but most parts just were written way to childish for my liking.

the writer kept referring to issues happened in the past, which made me feel like I was reading a sequel and really felt like a big missing part.

It had some nice mystery elements, but those were easy to figure out.

This book aggravated me to no end. It was fast paced and it held my attention HARD. BUT, the main character, ugh. And the ending! UGH!

Overall it was extremely well written, but there were just some overly dramatic, unbelievable moments. Also, I kept feeling like I was missing something, like this was the second in a series and I had somehow missed the first book.

Fast paced, fun read!

Flora Calhoun is a high school detective. The police are not always happy to hear from her or find her at crime scenes. When a close friend of hers is murdered she sets out to get justice. This book kept me guessing and had several twists and turns I did not see coming. Some of the situations are not realistic for 16-17 year olds, but overall I really enjoyed this book.

Thank you NetGalley for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

You’re Next by Kylie Schachte is a fast-paced thriller that will keep you guessing. Flora Calhoun is known for being somewhat of a girl-detective. A few summers ago, she found a dead classmate and didn’t stop until she found the killer. Unfortunately, her meddling allowed the killer to go free. Her mom couldn’t take it anymore and left her with her younger sister and grandfather. Most of her classmates have shunned her except for her ever-forgiving best friend Cass. Detective work is in her blood and she just can’t turn down a good mystery. Suddenly she receives a call from a friend who she has barely spoken to in months. She needs Flora’s help, and even though it’s the middle of the night, Flora is on the case. She arrives just minutes after her friend has been shot. The police write it off as a mugging, but Flora has a feeling there’s more to it. The deeper she digs, the more attention she gets from the real killers. Soon, her family and best friend are in danger. Will Flora drop the case to protect the ones she loves, or is already too late? Publish date: June 23, 2020 #netgalley #YoureNext #KylieSchachte

You’re Next reads to me like a posterchild (posterbook?) for why there should be an intermediate age group in publishing between YA and adult. Because it was a good book, yes, but the plot just felt ridiculous when you consider that the main character, and most of the people involved, are just sixteen.

I mean, the writing is solid. The mystery is solid. The characters were great and I loved their relationships and the development.

It’s just I couldn’t get past the age thing.

I know, I know. Suspend your disbelief, you say. But I could not. I tried, and I failed.

But let’s back up a moment and look at what you, the hypothetical reader who is more successful at suspending their disbelief than I, might enjoy about this book.

The mystery. It’s a very tense and tightly plotted mystery, for all that there were a number of times I said, incredulously, they’re SIXTEEN. And Kylie Schachte is very good at incrementally increasing the tension until you’re desperately reading to find out if everything’s okay.

The characters and relationships. Probably the central relationship in the book is Flora’s family relationship, which is full of angst, even though they all love one another (which, let’s be real, is the best sort of angst). But there’s also a ride-or-die friendship going on. And a very good romantic relationship (though 16/18 was a little ehhhh for me, but the dynamic was great).

The writing. I loved the writing, to be honest. Like I said above, Kylie Schachte is excellent at ratcheting up the tension, and I think that’s down to just how good her writing is.

But, as I mentioned at the start of this review, all of this was tempered because I couldn’t get past the characters being sixteen. I mean, the plot was more intense and dark than a lot of adult mysteries I’ve read, and I’m supposed to believe it’s all carried out by people who are still 9 years from a fully-developed brain? Okay.

So if you think you can suspend your disbelief sufficiently, go ahead, read this book. (I mean, read it even if you think you might not be able to, because you never know. Also it’s a very good book in itself.)

One last thing: I want it noted I do not appreciate that ending, thank you.

Veronica Mars meets One of Us is Lying. Scenarios were a little unrealistic at times but a decent choice for certain readers who are fans of fast-paced murder mystery/thriller.

Such a good book that kept the pace the entire time. I think this is going to be such a great book for the YA genre and this is feeding into this true crime spree that is reaching all age groups. This is exactly the kind of book we are looking for!

You're Next by Kylie Schachte is a stand-alone, ya mystery/thriller.

It took me a minute to get in the story, but then, o girl what a ride it was.
The storyline kept me in suspense til the end and don't get me started with the twists and turns. I was reading, sitting on the edge of my seat, a well written book I liked to read.
