I liked the focus on the sisters, but they felt a little surface level to me for the most part. I think the first third was really strong and was doing well at defining them, but it somehow got lost along the way.
I actually couldn’t read this as the format on my kindle was appalling but it’s one I will look to buy a physical copy of
I don't feel I can give an accurate review of this title because I DNFed it not too far in. The writing was not for me-- the characters were really one-dimensional and every time they spoke or thought, it was to reinforce what that sister's dominant personality trait was rather than to bring anything new to the story. I usually love reading about sisters, but this one didn't do anything for me.
This is a really great book full of love, laughter, heartbreak, loss, and literally every other emotion there is.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read and review this book. While this title is no longer within the realm of my current reading interests I appreciate the opportunity in receiving an ARC.
Three sisters, Maggie, Eliza and Tricia, have grown apart after the death of their mother. After the sudden, unexpected death of their father, they reunite and discover they have a half sister, Serena, who took a DNA test on a whim and discovered her relation to them. Family secrets are uncovered and the road traveled to form relationships is paved with bumps, but taken nonetheless.
This was just an OK read for me - like I've seen others mention in their reviews, I did not like or connect with the three main sisters. Their wealth and privilege, while I know the author was purposeful in writing, was still off-putting to me. I was more drawn to Serena, which I'm sure was the case for most readers. But she still wasn't enough to bump the book from a 3 to a 4 for me. The writing was great and I will definitely read more by the author, but this particular story was not a home run for me.
Thanks to Lian Dolan, HarperCollins and NetGalley for the ARC.
The Sweeney Sisters drifted apart after their mother passed away, and now, back together after fifteen years because their father has passed away, the girls receive some surprising news. Serena Tucker, it seems, is the fourth Sweeney Sister. Though she doesn't look like the rest of them (blonde hair instead of red), or share a mother (her mother Birdie was a chilly WASP in her own right), Serena calls into question: what does this mean for their family? For the legacy of their late father? For his unfinished memoir? For the sisters themselves?
A hilarious, heartwrenching, heartwarming story - perfect to pack for a summer vacation, both breezy and fast paced.
Thank you to Netgalley and William Morrow for advanced access to this title!
If you're a big fan of romantic comedies involving rich people and beaches, this is probably right up your alley. Dolan does a great job of blending a quick, believable plot with a good setting to create an enjoyable beach read.
The Sweeney Sisters show us the lives of Lisa,Maggie and Tricia, each with very different personalities one from the other, they are the daughters of a literary lion, who after death gives them the surprise of their lives, one that will turn their world upside down and show them the true meaning of the word "sister".
I received this book in exchange of an honest review.
If you miss those great Nancy Meyers rich people rom-coms, with the beach settings and the clothes and the houses with amazing kitchens, Lian Dolan’s latest novel, The Sweeney Sisters, may be right up your alley. Plot, character, setting, and dialogue all come together smoothly to create a colorful tale perfect for these shut-in days, and very reminiscent of Meyers’ films.

This book is great! Would definitely recommend. Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This was a decent read. It was a little different from what I normally read. I liked the main characters in the story. I liked following the sisters as they move through life in this situation. I recommend.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
Thank you for the chance to read this novel. I could not connect with the characters and wasn't able to finish.
I enjoyed The Sweeney Sisters by Lian Dolan. Dolan writes about the three daughters of a literary legend who dies and their discovery of another unknown sister. We are how the original three process and work through including her in their lives. This was a very endearing story and the characters were absolutely relatable.
Enjoyed this read. I am a fan of the author's podcast and have read her previous books, one I loved, the other I did not. This was an easy read that did a good job of connecting and developing the characters.
Thank you to Netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Three fiery red headed sisters lose their accomplished author father unexpectedly, and oh does the drama ensue. What a great story about idolization, strong women, weak men, and a surprise sister that, despite emotion and anger, becomes family.
Liza. Maggie. Tricia. The Sweeney sisters. They are so real and honest and flawed that you can’t help but fall in love with their story. They have an ethereal late mother, a famous yet deeply flawed father, and this secret that is thrust upon them at the worst possible time. Serena. The sister that lived next door, right under their noses, and yet unknown. Although William Sweeney was not the most honorable man, or the best father, he did have quite the effect on his daughters. As they struggle to find his last manuscript, it seems as if they all find themselves. Their true selves, out from under the shadow of this acclaimed literary genius. And it’s a beautiful story to watch unfold.
You'll enjoy this book if you like family dramas and enjoyed Brunch and Other Obligations or The Secret Women. I thought this book was very entertaining - about three sisters finding out that they have a half-sister! With romance, sibling rivalries, and questionable intentions there was lots of drama to go around.
I love reading books that talk about reading books! Add in the sister arc and you’ve already got me hooked, This book was such a good read and I’ve already purchased it for my sister and best friend!
I was so excited to get my hands on a copy of The Sweeney Sisters and let me just say I was not at all disappointed! This story is filled with secrets, sisters, and a little bit of drama. It was a perfect book to escape from reality and I would recommend others to read it.
Bill Sweeney was a famous literary author. When he dies suddenly of a heart attack in his sleep, he leaves many secrets for his three daughters to discover. When his will is read, they learn that he had another daughter, who is older than them and was their next door neighbour while they were growing up. He also left a mysterious memoir that is to be published after his death. The sisters have to unravel their father’s secrets, while also dealing with personal problems.
Serena, the half-sister of the Sweeney girls, found out about her relation to Bill Sweeney through an online DNA test. She ended up being a match for one of the Sweeney girls, so she knew she must be his daughter. That also uncovered her mother’s affair with Bill, which was strange since they didn’t have a relationship after that affair even though they lived next door to each other for years. I’ve read many articles about the popular online DNA tests that have revealed that family members aren’t actually related. It’s creepy that this is a common occurrence, but that makes this story timely.
This story had a third person omniscient narrator. That means that everyone’s thoughts were told in the narrative. This was a unique way to tell the story because none of the characters could have secrets from the reader, including the minor characters. The story was still suspenseful, because Bill had secrets, and he wasn’t present in the narrative since he had already died.
This is a great story!
