I liked the first book in the series, but it really has started getting stale. Unfortunately, I just don't think it will grab my students attention.
The fairytale reform school series is wonerful. I am in my late thirties and I love to read these books with my son who is 10. I think i would read them alone if he didn't like them!!! They are full of great characters and fun adventures. If you like fairytales this are the books for you.
Gilly is such a fun character. I love reading her story along with my daughters. They find her escapades adventurous and just the right amount of suspense.
My 11 year old daughter read this review copy, as she has enjoyed the previous books in the "Fairy Tale Reform School" series. This did not disappoint her! She liked that Gilly was part magic and harnessed some of her fairy magic. The characters were all very interesting and she appreciated the humour. She felt that the plot flowed well and it ended on a good note.
When I try to describe the books in the FTRS series, I sometimes feel as if I am just riffing on the trailers for "The Princess Bride." Think about it - chases, escapes, giants, evil masterminds, sword fights...they have a lot in common. Of course, in Gilly's case, most of the people involved are students or teachers at the Fairy Tale Reform School.
In this climactic installment, we find Gilly and her friends trying to find the last of the ingredients that Rumpelstiltskin needs to complete his curse on Enchantasia. Along the way they suffer "through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered" just as Sarah describes her quest in "Labyrinth." Despite evil wishes used against them, a cranky Kraken, fireballs, a wyvern and everything else the Stiltskin Squad can throw at them, the students don't give up.
Anna, Gilly's younger sister, is still working with Stiltskin and Alva. Will Gilly have to sacrifice the sister she loves to save everyone else? And will she and her friends make it through the final battle in one piece? Throughout the series friendship has been an important factor in the success of the characters. As Maxine writes in her essay, "We keep each other in check...when you have your friends by your side, the future doesn't feel so grim."
Fans will not be disappointed in the showdown to decide the fate of the kingdom once and for all. There is plenty of action, humor, some self-reflection, and resolution. You don't want to miss it.
Highly recommended for middle grades and up.
Cursed by Jen Calonita is the 6th book in Fairy Tale Reform School series. This is a book geared a younger audience. Cursed follow Gilly and her band of friends who are not quite "good" but is definitely no where near bad. They all met at school that was created to keep them from becoming villains. While there have continued to butt heads with some the world's biggest villains. Will our heroes be able to stop the real villains and save the world?
I thought this was a fitting end to the series. I listened to first three audiobooks. The first book was great and by the third I decided not to finish the series. When I saw the option to get this book for free I gave it a chance. I am glad I did because it gave my some happy closure.
This is a book geared towards a younger audience but by no means did I think this was terrible. Calonita is fine author who created an interesting world and showed that good and bad is not simple to see, and second chances needed to be given. I would definitely recommend this book to a younger audience. It was well written, there is interesting story, a lesson, and a variety of characters. I am giving this book four stars because it was enjoyable and the author stayed true to her world.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Young Readers for ARC. This is an honest review.
Cursed is the sixth book in the Fairy Tale Reform School series by Jen Calonita and is currently scheduled for release on May 1 2020. I do recommend reading the series in order to understand what is going on and the relationship details. In fact, having read the previous books and the two books in the spin off series, it took me a bit to remember important details and figure out where we had left off.
The evil Rumplestiltskin is planning to cast a curse that will erase Enchantasia as the world knows it, and a fairy prophecy declares that Gilly Cobbler will play a key role. Never one to shy away from adventure, Gilly and her friends embark on an epic, swashbuckling journey to stop Stiltskin from getting the ingredients he needs before it's too late. Gilly can't help but wonder if it's already too late for her beloved sister, Anna, who's still a member of the villainous Stiltskin Squad, and will seemingly stop at nothing to thwart Gilly and her crew. Only by harnessing the skills she may have inherited from her fairy grandmother can Gilly stop Stiltskin and reunite her family. But with time running out and her fairy skills lying dormant, does Gilly have what it takes to prevent the evil curse and ensure a happily-ever-after for the Cobblers? Or will she lose Enchantasia and her friends forever?
Cursed brings readers back into the story right in the middle of the action, and there is a great deal at stake. I have to admit that it took me a bit to remember who everyone was and if characters from the cross over series made appearances and where everything stood. But, I did figure it all out and was able to follow the action. Gilly is still trying to figure out her place and what she wants, and still is struggling to let people help her and themselves. The action is almost constant in this installment, which keeps the story moving along. However, it also made the character's actions and decisions feel much more reactionary and less thought out. There was little discussion, thinking things through, and character growth than in the previous books- at least in my opinion. I think fans of the series will want to read the book to see how the larger storyline with Stiliskin and Anna conclude, and I am glad that I read it for that reason. The conclusion was well done, and at wrapped things up nicely, but I was somehow expecting more from the book as a whole. It was good, but perhaps my expectations were sky high because of how much I enjoyed the start of the series, but it was not all I had hoped.
Cursed is a good wrap up to a series, and I think those that are fans of the author will need to read it.
I have not read the previous books in this series but had read book one of the Royal Academy Rebels and loved it. I was not lost. I grew up on Disney and fairy tales so I always find myself enjoying books like this one that adds a spin. It was a quick fun read.
Cursed is the last book in the Fairy Tale Reform School series, and it makes for a satisfying ending. Gilly Cobbler and her friends are trying to save all of Enchantasia from Rumplestiltskin. They meet new characters along the way, including Gilly's elusive grandmother, all while Gilly is still grappling with the betrayal of her sister, Anna. Like the other books, this one is action packed and filled of interesting takes of our beloved fairy tale characters.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC.
Well the final instalment of Gilly Cobblers adventures is truly a rip roaring ride. She’s determined to save the kingdom of Enchantasia from the evil Stiltskin and his partner Alva . Gilly and her numerous friends are trying to prevent a curse being cast over the land and in order to stop the nasty couple need to find the Genie Darlene before Stiltskin does but with Gillys sister Anna as part of his wicked gang will they get there first ?
This enchanting series will surely delight many middle grade age children but I who am far from that age group truly enjoyed this story. It’s a delightful treatment of traditional fairytales and very imaginative. Easy to read and with surprises along the way this adventure will have fans of the series anxiously wondering if there will be more stories set in Enchantasia . Well as the Fairy Tale Reform School series ends stand by for the Royal Academy Rebels to worm their way into your hearts !
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fa
I just absolutely love this series! I recommend it to all my young patrons looking for something a little different. Great characters and fun story lines make this a favorite.
I have absolutely enjoyed the FTRS series and this last book doesn’t disappoint. I really feel as though fans of the FTRS series will be happy with how everything wraps up. While I know that this is the last book in the series I am really hoping that Calonita will continue to write stories that take us to Enchantasia because I’m not ready for the journey to be over.
This fairy-tale inspired series is a whole lot of fun! Gilly is a really enjoyable heroine, and I love seeing all the fairy tale elements worked in. Start at the beginning, but if you like witty, madcap middle grade fantasy, this series is a sure bet!
I am a big fan of the FTRS series and was ecstatic to get a copy of the last book in the series, cursed. I think this book had more of an adventurous feel than the other books in the series, but I was all for it. I think overall the book was really well written although I felt a little sad once I finished it because I didn’t want the series to end!
However overall I know FTRS fans should be scrambling to buy this book! So amazing! (Whew, that was hard not to spoil anything)
A satisfying ending to the quest of Gilly Cobbler and friends to rescue her sister Anna from following Stiltskin and to save the kingdom of Enchantasia from the evil designs of Alva. Not great literature, but it's a rare middle grade series that motivates me to read the entire series. Every series fan will be clamoring for this.
