A wonderful cozy mystery set around the Charming bookstore in upstate NY near Niagara Falls. When Violet, the owner of the bookstore and her police boyfriend are on the latest bike race, the 30 mile race is interrupted by a murder. I like how she helps solve it, but is not necessarily going out of her way to take away the job of the police. As a former literature major, I also enjoyed the excerpts and references to Walt Whitman's poems as well. Fun story and a good one to curl up with on a wintery day. Highly recommend this book and author.
I waited so patiently to be approved for this ARC, and it was worth the wait! This story is so filled with emotions, strong characters, and just a touch of magic to really tie everything together. I am so invested in these characters, this series, I feel like they are friends I cannot wait to visit. I hope this series continues, this latest book was such a strong addition to a magically perfect series.
Fun book! I love when the past is intertwined with the present, it makes for a very interesting read. I liked the reveal. Good book!
Verse and Vengeance takes us back to Cascade Springs and the magical world of the Waverly women and Charming Books. Once again we have a mysterious death to investigate and it's someone whose had their sights on Violet and the mysterious happenings in her bookshop. Can she and Chief Rainwater figure out who commited the crime, can she keep her magical tree a secret? or will her time as caretaker be a disaster?
The mysteries in this series are always layered and interesting, keeping you guessing and wanting to read more. It's a smart cozy, giving us social commentary, literary insight and ironically issues that are truer to reality than some cozies, in a world laced with magic.
I love the personal story arcs in this series as well, Violet coming to terms with her family's job as caretaker of the tree/shop, the sacrifices needed to practice their magic, the issues with her father and her deepening relationship with Rainwater are all explored in Verse and Vengeance and we see powerful growth in all aspects. It creates such a deeper connection to the characters and invests you that much more in the story. Emerson's mischievous escapades are the topper to a great mystery and a great series.
I adored this book.
A visit to Charming Books brings an intriguing adventure that involves both mystery and magic.
PI Joel Redding wants to uncover the secret behind the magical bookshop that Violet Waverly owns. Unfortunately, he is murdered while participating in a local bicycle race. Just a few days earlier Police Chief David Rainwater’s brother-in-law, a Redding client, is found murdered. Police consider the deaths connected but have no motive. A person of interest is Jo, a student and friend of Violet’s, who works for Bobby’s Bike Shop and registered Redding for the race along with providing the faulty bike.
Violet explores other suspects, primarily folks seen arguing with Redding before his death, since she believes Jo is innocent. As usual, Violet’s sleuthing keeps the pace moving. Amanda Flower’s Cascade Springs is a delightful village filled with engaging characters. Two residents of Charming Books include Emerson, a cat that practices magic, and Faulkner, a crow that talks. Ms. Flower creates a well crafted mystery with twists, realistic dialogue and interesting relationships. A compelling read, easily worth five stars.
VERSE AND VENGEANCE by AMANDA FLOWER is the fourth book in the Magical Bookshop Mystery series. This is a cozy paranormal mystery series that centers on a magical bookshop, Charming Books, and its owner Violet Waverly.
Violet’s grandmother is the town’s mayor and has arranged a bike race as a fundraiser for an Underground Railroad museum. Violet and her boyfriend, Police Chief David Rainwater, are participating in the race when they find private investigator Joel Redding dead. Violet works to identify the killer while keeping the bookstore’s magical capabilities a secret from David. The bookstore communicates with her through a book by Walt Whitman. There are several potential killers and the motive for the murder stays unclear throughout most of the novel.
The characters fit well into the quaint town and include a crow named Faulkner and a tuxedo cat named Emerson as well as Grandma Daisy and many others. Additionally the relationships between the characters do not come across as contrived. There are plenty of internal and external conflicts that are well defined for the main characters. The scenes progressed in a realistic manner and the author did a great job of world-building that gives the reader a clear sense of the fictional town of Crystal Springs, New York.
If you like cozy paranormal mystery books, bookstores, and Walt Whitman then you will likely enjoy this story as much as I did. I only wish I could go into Charming Books and explore the books that would find me while I was there. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Another charming entry in the Magical Bookshop series!
A nosy detective is murdered at a bike race. Violet has to figure out why and protect the bookshop's secret
When Violet is recruited to participate in a bike race to benefit the town by her Grandmother the Mayor little does she know that she's going to witness a murder of a nosy reporter who has been following her. Will she be able to find the murderer and clear her friend's name? And why her bookshop essence steering her towards Walt Whitman's works?
Fast-paced fun read that involves a little romance, a little magic and a cute tuxedo kitty.
Book number four in this series is the best yet!
I was delighted to see this series picked up by a new publisher. Hopefully we can look forward to many more books in this series.
This cozy includes a magical bookstore where the books choose you; and a resident crow that talks.
The bookstore keeps steering Violet to the works of Walt Whitman to help solve the murder in this latest installment.
The whodunit was well written and kept me guessing.
The characters are top notch and interesting.
I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next one.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
I had a hard time getting into this book. I think that the focus of the book on Walt Whitman was the problem. I'm not big into his poems and the story brought him and his poems up multiple times. It really slowed down the story for me. I think the parts with Emerson the cat were cute and definitely the better part of the story. I did know who the bad guy was at the end of the story but there wasn't a lot of explanation about how she killed the 2 men in the book. I would have liked more details at the end. I was glad at the end when Daniel proposed but now we have to wait til the next book to find out the answer. #VerseandVengeance #NetGalley

The trouble is finding out what that connection is and who killed the man. One of Violet’s students becomes a main suspect, and Violet does her best to protect the young girl and prove her innocence. Another fantastic entry in the series from one of my favorite authorsAnother fantastic entry in the series from one of my favorite authors Amanda flower, Amanda Flower. there are several series that I read religiously by this author and I’m never disappointed. In this series, the author wizen In this series, the author weaves in the works of other authors and brings it all together in a fascinating whodunit. I received a free copy of VERSE AND VENGEANCE (Book 4 of the Magical Bookshop Mysteries) by Amanda Flower in exchange for an honest review. Violet Waverly’s supporting Grandma Daisy’s endeavors as town mayor of Cascade Falls. Violet’s even participating in the first annual Tour de Cascade bike race. Things are going well financially with the bookshop and professionally at the college for the newly minted “Dr.” Waverly. However, Violet is still struggling with whether to tell her boyfriend Police Chief David Rainwater about her family’s magic when a few more stressors make an appearance: both her father and the disturbing private detective Joel Redding arrive back in town. When Joel Redding is murdered during the race, one of Violet’s students becomes the primary suspect. Since the bookshop persists in throwing Walt Whitman tomes at Violet and since her student’s situation resonates with Violet’s past, Violet’s compelled to action. Will Violet be able to use her literary research skills and natural curiosity to find out who really dunnit?
I enjoyed this book and have enjoyed all of the books in this series. I recommend the writing and stories of Amanda Flower to fans of cozy mysteries. This series has supernatural element, a rivalry between and intelligent raven and a too-smart tuxedo cat, an interfering elder, and a wonderful boyfriend who is actually good at his job.

Verse and Vengeance by Amanda Flower is an awesome addition to this series. Can you tell that I love this series?
Ms. Flower's descriptive writing pulled me into the village of Cascade Springs as Violet and David are to begin riding in the Tour de Cascade bike race and I didn't put the book down until the end. Violet and Grandma Daisy are two of my favorite people in the world of cozy mysteries. I feel at home at Charming Books and want to move in each time I read a new book in the series. The mystery is complex as their aren't many suspects and the one person who might know something keeps disappearing before Violet and David can really talk to her. A quickly paced plot that kept me on my toes until the reveal which took me totally by surprise made this, for me, an excellent read. I'm already looking forward to the next book in this series.
