Having tackled a few small home improvement projects, the Black & Decker Complete Photo Guide to Outdoor Building book appealed to develop my understanding from there. Particularly, we have several garden paths which need renewing and I appreciate the clear explanation and photos which makes the process so much easier to understand.

There are various projects in the book and several have inspired future projects including a deck and free-standing arch which I hope to try out in the future. Whilst I wasn’t able to action any of it yet, I found the instructions simple and easy to follow. I look forward to referring to it in the future. It’s a five out of five on the en-JOY-ment scale.

This book was in pre-release format when I got a copy as such it may have been missing some content like the green house material. With this in mind this book had a much bigger focus on decks and sheds then gardening things that would be useful to me right now. The instructions were clear and should be easy to follow if one was so inclined.

Anyone can complete the outdoor project of their dreams with this step-by-step guide complete with photos of each step.

If you are like me and have big ideas for outdoor projects by don’t know where to being, this book is for you. It explains in detail how to make a project reality and shows what each step looks like. It covers four areas: Walkways, Patios and Decks; Walls and Fences; Play and Entertainment Projects; and Sheds and Structures. In each category, you will find a number of different projects to choose from. Contained within each project is an explanation of the benefits of each, such as loose rock path or stepping-stone path.

The tools and materials are clearly stated so you won’t have to run to the store mid-project. The illustrations are mainly clear photographs with the details of that step alongside. While most of the projects are a big undertaking, by using this book, they are doable.

I received an ARC from Quarto Publishing through NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion or rating of this book. I am voluntarily submitting this review and am under no obligation to do so.

Black & Decker Book of Home How-To Complete Photo Guide to Outdoor Building is an upcoming addition to the B&D series specifically focused on decks, sheds, garden structures and other permaculture structures. Due out 31st Dec 2019 from Quarto on their Cool Springs imprint, it's 144 pages and will be available in flexibound format.

This book is packed full of step by step picture tutorials for a number of appealingly useful and attractive projects which are do-able for the average homeowner. A very short introduction is followed immediately by chapters covering: walkways patios & decks, walls & fences, play areas, sheds & structures. The book does include a metric conversion chart and abbreviated index, but nearly all of the page content is used for the projects themselves.

Each project contains a finished design picture, an exploded isometric drawing with labeled parts and cutting lists (US standard measurements only), an introduction and supplies list, and a step by step picture tutorial with succinct descriptions.

The projects run the gamut from short afternoon projects easily completed by a beginner to full-on advanced projects which could easily challenge an experienced DIYer. There are some specialty items which I really had never considered within the realm of DIY (like a brick masonry wood fired pizza oven).

One codicil: I'm not sure if the book underwent some editing deletions without being reflected in the promotional materials (I received an early eARC which wasn't final for release), but the promotional title is: "Complete Photo Guide to Outdoor Building: Decks - Sheds - Greenhouses & Garden Structures. There are no greenhouse plans or tutorials in the eARC I received. That doesn't detract from the book in my opinion. The 22 included projects are quite nice and will enhance the outdoor areas of any home.

This is a wonderful book. There were many nice looking yard projects that I believe any person could make without major difficulties. I wanted to start building something almost the minute I opened the book. The narrative was interesting and helpful. The photos were big and colorful. I have several How-To books and will be adding this one to my collection!
