I enjoyed this historical romance of Miss Hannah Pendleton and Nicholas the Earl of Darby. And all the rest of the characters.
Miss Hannah Pendleton is excited to have her first season in London. She is also excited to see a childhood friend that she has a crush on. But when she finds out some news about this childhood friend she is surprised.
Nicholas the Earl of Darby is seeking revenge for the death of his first wife. So when his friend has asked him to look after his sister during her first season. But looking after her might be hard to do.
This story had a lot of different type of emotion. This story takes place during Christmas time.
I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
This was a short but fun book to read. It started off with a surprise! Death on a wedding night at Christmas! The author managed to pull it off though and the Earl of Darby was able to find his happy ever after and avenge his first wife.
Miss Hannah Pendleton is nursing her pride after her childhood crush falls in love with another. Determined to break a few hearts of her own, she hurls herself into the exciting and hectic schedule of a first season. Always clever and direct, the smooth manners and practiced words of the gallant but meticulous bachelors do nothing to stir her soul until…
Since his wife’s suicide on their wedding night, the Earl of Darby has carefully cultivated his rakish reputation. It keeps overprotective mamas at bay and provides him with unlimited clandestine affairs. But when Nicholas sees a lovely newcomer being courted by the devil himself, her innocence and candor revive the chivalry buried deep in his soul. The ice around Nicholas’s heart cracks as he desperately tries to save Hannah and right a hideous wrong committed so long ago.
This was a really good book. I really liked both characters. I really liked the flow of the story. It was an unexpected treat. I highly recommend.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
The Earl of Darby begins darkly with his wife Alice committing suicide on their wedding night due to her rape and pregnancy by another. Her mother and the earl’s mother plotted and married them quickly to hide the pregnancy and save Alice. It just did not work.
Now years later, Darby is helping his sister enter society along with Hannah Pendleton, sister to Lord Pendleton (book 2). Pendleton has asked Darby to look after Hannah while he is away. Not only is Darby captivated by Hannah, so is the rapist of his wife Alice. What follows is intrigue, kidnapping and treason as Darby protects Hannah and strives to prove Alice’s rapist guilt.
Great as a stand-alone, but perfect in the series, too.
This novella had a good plot and great characters. The main characters were very likable. The story moved quickly and I finished it in a few hours.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Well written regency novella with likeable and believable characters falling in love despite their personal tragedies in the past. This was a quick (160 pages) read with a good pace and well executed. I would definitely look out for other books of the author.
This is apparently my 2nd Christmas story. Hehehe. And I didn’t even notice. Thanks NetGalley for that.
This book historical regency romance, the 4th in its series. It’s a light and quick read, about Hannah and her brother’s best friend, Nicholas. But she was half in love with the other best friend till then. Formula but hey, it works. And sometimes you look for formula. 😊 I do sometimes.
Thank you @aubreywynne for the copy of this book. I’d thank the publisher but not sure who it is. Self published maybe?
A tragic beginning at Christmas casts a dark shadow over what should be a happy celebration. Nicholas, Lord Darby, seeks revenge for the death of his young wife. Five years later, he's closer to his goal. Then into his life comes Hannah, his best friend's sister. Her coming out is at the same time as his sister's. His job is to watch out for both ladies while out in society, but the evil from the past now threatens Hannah, the woman he loves. A sexy dark hero, a sweetheart young lady and her aunt, Lady Roberta who keeps everybody's spirits uplifted, move the romance to a conclusion that makes two couples happy. Recommended if you're looking for a hero. 4 1/2 STARS
Earl of Darby by Aubrey Wynne is part of the Wicked Earl's Club and the Once Upon a Widow Series. This is the story of Nicholas, the Earl of Darby and Hannah Pendleton. I did feel this could be a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Nicholas doesn't have trust anymore nor does he enjoy the holiday season after the death of his wife on their wedding night. The only person he holds true and dear is his sister. But when his friend asked him to keep an eye on his sister Hannah, who along with his sister, is making their debut into society...he agrees. Hannah has set her mind to enjoy the season and befriends Nicholas's sister. Hannah having mixed feelings about Nicholas goes forward to do her best to enjoy her time. Nicholas becomes worried for Hannah when the man that ruined his wife and possible other starts to show interest in her.
Hannah ends up open up Nicholas to trust and feelings again. Enjoyed their story.
Earl of Darby by Aubrey Wynne is part of the series called the Wicked Earls’ Club. The novels focus on a group of Lords who joined a club called the Wicked Earl’s Club. The rakes are determined to stay single and maintain their bachelorhood. The Earl of Darby’s sister is coming out as his friend’s sister that he agrees to help chaperone. Little does he know what is going to happen.
Hannah Pendleton is excited about her coming out. Her brother has left her with her Aunt Bertie and asked the Earl of Darby to help chaperone the ladies. She has always thought she was in love with her brother’s other friend only to find out his has fallen in love with another person already. So she has decided to just have a fun time with Matilda and all the opportunities available, only the Earl of Darby seems to be more fascinating and interesting. Maybe this is the one.
I enjoyed this novel. Aunt Bertie was a fun character who added some humor to the story and made me laugh. There is a suicide that starts the book, so it was hard to believe that book would be positive and a fun read, but it was. This is the first book I have read in the Wicked Dukes Club and I did not feel I was missing information to enjoy the book. The Earl of Darby is an interesting historical romance with some thriller elements.
The Earl of Danby has lived his life with regret and sadness, since the death of his wife. Having been married for only one day, Alice took her life but before doing so, left a letter that would haunt him. Several years later, his best friend asks him to watch over his sister, Miss Hannah Pendleton, who is making her debut in London society. She has befriended his sister who has also blossomed with her friendship with Hannah. Everyone loves Hannah, so it is easy to understand when Nick also falls for her, but given his past, he tries all that he can to keep himself apart from her.
Nicholas was a tormented soul, yet he is instantly attracted to Hannah, who is such a delightful and kind hearted character. Both were so right for each other, that it was easy to see this relationship blossoming. I enjoyed reading this story from both characters perspective and found many of the secondary characters added to this lovely romance. A great addition to this series; however, this is a stand-alone story.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This was just an ok read for me... part of it was that the story was written from both the hero and heroine's perspective. I normally really enjoy this as I think it adds to the story to know what each of them are thinking. But the way it was done here, you just relived the story from the other perspective so it was just two repetitive for me. But then about 3/4 of the way through, the author seems to stop doing this??
I really enjoyed the other book that I have read by Wynne, so I was disappointed that I didn't enjoy this one.
Will an Earl sets on revenge, be able to let the past go to make room for a new love ...
Slowly I am discovering the many authors writing for this charming series, The Wicked Earls Club.
And today Mrs Aubrey Wynne was one of them.
As she pointed out in her Afterword note, the story, a Christmas themed tale begins on the worst omen, yet, it is to emphasize the journey the hero will face until he finds peace.
Nicholas, perfect name for a avenging angel during Christmastide. While he was as much a victim as his late wife, he bears the burden of her irremediable decision, and never allowed himself to rest until he sets her soul free from her suffering. But in doing this promise, he got himself trapped in the way, now locked up in the coffin of the walls surrounding his heart.
Hannah has longed for her soulmate all her young life, and she definitively thought she had found him in the person of her brother’s childhood friend, while her instant attraction to Nicholas unsettles her to no end, until she sees a glimpse of the real man he tries to hide behind his society’s mask. From there, she decides to open her eyes and heart to catch him as he might not realize, yet, how much he will need her.
In all, a wonderful story of healing and the strength love can give us.
On a special note, I loved the author gave some particular scenes the outlook from both sides, it is refreshing.
I am just a bit disappointed is the dashing cover model is not sharing the blond hero, fair features.
5 stars for this moving tale.
I was granted an advance copy by the author through Netgalley, I preordered too my own.
Here is my true and unbiased opinion.
I received an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review
Not enough heat but very strong story and characters, 3.5 rounded up
This was a very quick read for me, but fairly enjoyable. Hannah is the sister of a previous book's hero, who comes to London for the Season and unknowingly gets targeted because the growing relationship between her and Nicholas, the Earl of Darby. It all goes back to Nicholas's first wife. I felt like the atmosphere of the book was well done - it was clearly set in the Regency time, with period appropriate details. I liked Hannah as a character, Nicholas not as much but I think that's because I would have liked both the plot and Nicholas and Hannah's relationship to be fleshed out a little bit more. But like I said before, not a bad read and if you want to read a book that's fairly short, definitely pick it up.
