This book hooks you from the very beginning! Heather Chavez does not disappoint in this debut book. Twista and turns left and right! Full of suspense! Will keep you on the edge of your seat.
I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
A thriller with lots of twists and turns. A woman stumbles across an attack that unbeknownst to her had connections to her past
This boom started with a punch- literally. One seemingly random assault witnessed by our protagonist leads her down a crazy road filled with affairs, murder, and enemies from the distant past. I kept asking "Huh? How is THIS or THAT related? How does this play into the plot??" In the end, however, everything is wrapped up nicely with a pretty red bow. A rollercoaster ride from the beginning -- definitely worth reading!
Wow, what a debut! Know I’ll be watching for more by Heather Chavez. This book grabbed me from the beginning and refused to let go until I was finished! When you start, prepare for nothing else, because you will be finishing it before you can do any other tasks! Well written, character development is above most books development making you yearn to know what’s going to happen! Suspense you can cut with a knife, so many twists you may get a bit dizzy, thrills, chills, and shocks leaving you gasping for breath after realizing you’ve been holding it for entirely too long! Don’t hesitate, grab a copy today, preorder it for delivery on day it comes out, because I promise this is one of those 2020 books you will not want to miss! Highly, highly recommend, to anyone and everyone who loves twisted psychological thrillers with dark, disturbing themes that will leave you in chills!

I really enjoyed this debut thriller! The fast pacing, nonstop action, and twists kept me turning the pages.
This book grabbed me from the beginning.
Was it a bit unrealistic? Sure, but who cares. It was a fun, twisty, suspenseful ride. I didn't know what was going to happen next, which I loved. It was fast paced and I kept the pages turning quickly. I loved the story, and the writing, which drew me into the world that was being written about.
(do NOT google Jerusalem cricket...yuck!)
I want to thank the publisher and #netgalley for the advance copy. This did not impact my review. As always, I write for future readers, so I like to tell it like it is.
Thank you #netgalley and #heatherchavez for the early copy- this is my unbiased and honest opinion.
I'm not sure how to review this book. I really enjoyed it and at 40% I did something I have never done- updated my progress on GoodReads just so people could see what a fun and crazy read it was! But by the end of the book, things sorta petered out a little....
No Bad Deed reminded me of Harlan Coben, who is my favorite author. Tons of twists and turns and I said "What the hell" at least 10 times while reading. I couldn't figure out where the book was going or how everyone and everything was connected. I love not knowing what is going to happen next.
The problem I had was right around 85% mark - it just started not making as much sense for me. I felt like there were some loose ends and the author rushed a little to connect the dots. It was a great book and I will definitely read her next book - excited to see the authors upcoming growth.
3.5 stars. If you are looking for something fast-paced that you will be glued to all night, this is a perfect choice. It's a thriller in the vein of Harlan Coben or Linwood Barclay, where a bad thing happens to an ordinary, decent suburban person and from there it speeds along as the protagonist is sucked into a crazy plot and probably has to rescue their perfect All-American family. This suburban person may or may not be someone who would bore you to death in a book focused on character development (in this case, she is), but they are just fine for non-stop action.
The plot here was a bit outlandish, and I'm not sure I followed every convoluted thread by the end, but it absolutely delivered on maintaining my interest! Would definitely recommend if you are looking for something a bit mindless, but exciting.
The good...twists and turns abound. No Bad Deed is a new twist in the genre and felt like nothing I've read before. The writing is decent and I do look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
The bad...I really wanted to quit this book a few times. It starts off strong and ends pretty strong, the middle gets kind of dull and fantastical. I wasn't invested in any of the characters, so I didn't much care what happened to them, but I did like the story-line so I pushed through.
Overall, not a bad read. Not over the top suspenseful or anything, but a good mix of women's fiction and suspense.
It’s winter. It’s dark and cold (or at least as cold as it ever gets at the beach on the Central Coast of California). For a few weeks, I’ve been craving one of THOSE books: the kind that grab you early on and keep you reading until you finish. And, thanks to Harper Collins/William Morrow and NetGalley, I finally got one in No Bad Deed, the debut novel by Heather Chavez.
It opens with a Northern California veterinarian, Cassie Larkin, driving home after working late. She happens to see a man assaulting a woman in a full-on physical battle, and she makes a split-second decision to jump in and help the woman. She tries to save the life of this complete stranger, and although the man gets away before he can be apprehended, he warns Cassie that her own life is basically over as he runs off.
The next night, Cassie’s husband takes their kid trick-or-treating and disappears. The parents had been experiencing some problems in their marriage (apparently unnoticed by people around them) and she had wondered if he might be having an affair. That suspicion is confirmed by his best friend, so of course she believes it. Not only that, she comes to believe that her husband’s disappearance is related to the threat from the creepy man who threatened her.
With terrific pacing and slowly advancing tension, the book follows the events as Cassie’s life starts to unravel, all because she was a Good Samaritan and saved a stranger’s life. This book grabbed me on page one and kept a steady pace all the way through, and I loved it! I didn’t predict the outcome or any of the various twists and turns in the story, but that’s not unusual for me.
One little creepy factoid was that in this book I learned (probably more than I wanted to know) about Jerusalem crickets. I looked them up, although they totally creeped me out in the story, and OMG the pictures were disgusting! Then I learned that Jerusalem cricket is just another name for POTATO BUGS…and I was even MORE creeped out.
Despite the ick factor of the bugs, I really did love it. I think Chavez is a terrific writer, and I totally cannot wait can’t wait for her next book. Five enthusiastic stars.
No Bad Deed is a book that will keep you reading well into the night.
Suspenseful, emotional and just all around fantastic.
Heather Chavez is now on my favorite author list!
Though I regret ever searching for “Jerusalem crickets,” I really enjoyed this book. Cassie is a punchy, strong (if overly so at times) heroine and the plot gives plenty of twists with a premise that is a fresh spin on the genre.
One rainy night, Cassie Larkin witnesses an assault on her way home from work. She stops to intervene, and the attacker leaves her with an ominous line: “let her die and I’ll let you live.” She would never guess that soon her husband will disappear and her life as well as her children’s will hang in the balance.
This one kept me guessing to the end and nothing is as it seems. Well written and tightly paced, I’d definitely recommend this one.
Thank you to William Morrow and NetGalley for this review copy.
Veterinarian Cassie Larkin is hurrying home—she’s late again. But she still stops when she sees a man assaulting a woman by the side of the road. After calling 911, she foolishly tries to stop him. He threatens Cassie saying, “let her die and I’ll let you live.” He steals her car and gets away before the police arrive.
The victim does survive but Cassie will never forget his menacing face. He has her purse and phone so she’s afraid she’s put her family in danger. Then she learns her husband knew the victim and he disappears, leaving a cryptic message. It seems like her whole world is crumbling apart. Was the attack just a random event or something much more sinister?
A fast-paced story that will keep you guessing till the end.
My copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My thanks to the the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review it.
When I started this book I was expecting thrilling suspense but, for approximately the first three-fourths what I found, instead, was a story lacking spark or tension. I thought the characters were bland and unbelievable and I felt no connection to them. Specifically, I did not like the main character and really didn’t care about her. I didn’t understand many of her actions and thought there was an over abundance of coincidences throughout the book.
The pace of the book picked up somewhat toward the end; however, the explanations were forced rather than clever.
No Bad Deed has a fabulous first chapter, full of fast-paced action and high stakes. The story never really slows down. Everything bad that could possibly happen to screw up Cassie Larkin's life happens: her husband is cheating, missing, disgraced, fired, kidnapped and maybe murdered. Her children are stalked, cyber-bullied, kidnapped, beaten up, and thrown from a moving car. Her neighbors lie to her and about her, she's setup, burned out and framed for murder. It moves fast and keeps your attention, but after a while the story started to have a little bit of a "perils of pauline" feeling to it. No one ever gets tied to the railroad tracks, but someone is buried alive in the grand finale.
The twisty, perverted back story that brings all this down on Cassie is complicated and not quite believable. So, four stars, not five. But I will watch for more from Heather Chavez.
