Cassie's Good Samaritan gesture- she tried to help a woman being violently abused by a man- turns everything in her life on its head. The man -Carver - steals her car and with it her ID. The next day, Cassie's husband Sam disappears while trick or treating, leaving their young daughter Audrey behind. What happened to Sam, a teacher who seemed, at least to Cassie, as someone who was totally up front? But he's not and Cassie has to unravel a mystery she never expected. No spoilers! The chapters are short (making it easy to read just one more, then another) and the story telling fast paced. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. This is a well done thriller that keep you turning the pages.
Well that was one crazy thrill ride!! No Bad Deed by Heather Chavez is one of those stories that doesn’t seem completely plausible, but at the same time you don’t care because you are so enthralled by the mystery of it. The story starts out on a solid foot, Cassie the main character witnessing a brutal beating of a woman on her way home from work. Not being able to let that happen she stops to intervene. Everything that follows is unexpected and keeps you guessing until the end. Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Publishers William Morrow for the ARC!!!
Cassie is driving home from her veterinary clinic when she spots a man assaulting woman. She dials 911, but fearing for the woman's life, she makes the I'll fated decision to step in. Before escaping with Cassie's van, keys, and purse, he tells Cassie he'll let her live if she let's the woman die. The next night while trick or treating with their daughter, Cassie's husband Sam disappears.
This sets off a twist filled psychological thriller that will leave you breathless. The central characters are well developed, considering there are a lot of players in this story. The plot is well put together, though there is definitely some suspension of belief on the reader's part in order to get through the book. Overall, this is a fantastic debut novel that I had a hard time putting down. I highly recommend!
I would like to thank Netgalley, author Heather Chavez, publishers William Morrow, and HarperCollins for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I'm normally not quick to give 5 star reviews but I've been handing them out left and right lately. This book was a surprisingly good read. I went into it not expecting to love it as much as I did but after reading the first chapter I knew that I was hooked. I'm not sure I've read a more fast paced, edge of your seat thriller since Taylor Adams' No Exit. The pacing in this book doesn't let up. This is a page turner in the best way possible. I try not to attempt to put the pieces together in a story but I found myself doing that. I was trying to make sense of everything because the pages are jam packed. I don't mind if I figure out the twists in a book but with this, there was no way possible for me to do it. This book is a ride so I think its best to just enjoy it without trying to figure out where you're going.
No Bad Deed starts off in the middle of the action. I love when books do that because it instantly draws the reader in. Heather Chavez is excellent at that. We meet Cassie right as she's driving home from a late night at work. Then this is where the magic happens. She sees two people arguing so she calls 911. Then she does what probably not many people would, she gets out of her car to intervene. That simple (or not so simple) action started this whole chain of events that is wild and crazy. I don't want to say much more about the plot but just know that the events that happen next are unpredictable.
While its clear that I loved this book (I read it in less than a day), the only thing I didn't really love was the ending. I'm not sure if I expected more or if I just didn't want the book to end but to me it fell a little flat. However, that didn't make me love the book any less. This is still a fantastic read with a fast paced twisty plot.
Big thank you to HarperCollins Publishers and Netgalley for the egalley. This book is so good and one of my favorites I have read so far this year.
Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book. Everything changes for Cassie after one split second decision on one rainy night. This one was a little slow for me, but the writing and plot were good. Recommend.
After a promising start the story became at times became far fetched and illogical. In the end it was not a satisfying read.
This book started off strong. Cassie stops off the side of the road one night when she see's a fight between a man and a woman. The man is trying to kill the woman, so Cassie helps. That man, Carver, tells her he should have let him kill the woman. Carver takes off and takes Cassie's van. The police give Cassie a ride home, and as usual her husband is disappointed. On Halloween night, her husband disappears leaving his daughter with strangers while trick or treating. What follows is Cassie's hunt for the truth.
This book was a slow burn to me, and there were just too many players. I lost interest fast into what happened to Cassie's husband, because so many other story lines kept popping up. I did finish this one, but I don't think this is one I could recommend.
Oh. My. Gosh. I need a moment. This is Heather Chavez’s debut novel and she needs to keep writing because I NEED to read more from her! Holy. Crap.
.
This book was fast paced and had my full attention right away; it’s just action packed. I finished this book in less than 24 hours and I hardly put it down. Seriously, my heart was in my throat the whole time and I constantly had a nervous feeling in my stomach about what might come next.
.
It’s written so that the story is told entirely from one character’s perspective in first person. That’s one of my favorite writing styles and in my opinion makes for easy reading. I also really liked the main character.
.
There were amazing twists, the kind that make you gasp, and the end was totally satisfying. Guys, you need to read this. Can’t recommend it highly enough!
Thank you HarperCollins Publishers, and NetGalley for early access to No Bad Deeds for my honest review. Unfortunately, I am no able to finish this book due to the beginning. The protagonist make a fast decision, gave me a sinking feeling the story was going to go on and on with bad decisions which might create a hole for her. I really enjoy Heather Chavez writing and attention to detail. I look forward to future books from her.
Omigosh!!! Don't know where to start! Well, after reading several books with fairly unlikeable main characters, Cassie was a breath of fresh air! She is sort of a smartass. I LOVED her! She is driving home at night, sees an assault in progress and tries to stop it. MISTAKE.!! Her world begins to fall apart next. Strap in for a roller coaster ride! I can't recommend this one enough! Four stars because this does require suspending believability, but definitely do not let that stop you!
Thank you to NetGalley, Heather Chavez and William Morrow for this ARC!
This book started out great for me, but towards the middle to end, the crazy twists and turns seemed a little too crazy and also confusing. It was still an ok read, but not going to be a favorite.
Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Twists and turns, reveals and an out of left field reveal (which I normally do not care for- but it worked in this book), kept me turning the pages to determine just what the heck was going on, going down, who is telling the truth, who is the bad guy and well.......read this for yourself! Whew!
This is a fast-paced thriller in which Veterinarian Cassie Larkin sees a man and woman arguing by the side of the road. After calling 911 to report the dispute, she makes the very bad decision - one that she will regret later - to get out of the car and intervene. When the huge hulking man turns on her after she tries to attack him, he snarls at her “Let her die, and I’ll let you live.”
Not one to take anyone's advice, she puts her training to use and saves the woman's life, finds her car and purse stolen by the known criminal and within 24 hours her husband is missing. That's just the icing on the cake folks.
This is a fast-paced thriller that leaps off the pages. The twist and turns keep happening. As Cassie tries to locate her husband, she learns some interesting things about her husband. Facts that have her wondering if his disappearance was voluntarily or was it related to the threat made to her the previous day? He has been distant lately, but why? Is there something wrong? Something he isn't telling her perhaps. Or is she reading too much into his disappearance?
So, suspend some disbelief, curl up in your favorite reading spot, and be prepared to spend some time with this fast paced, thrill ride of a book. Who is telling the truth? Who is reliable? Is anyone reliable in this book? One thing is certain - not everything is exactly as it seems.
My super sleuthing skills did not help me at all with figuring out this book. That was a plus! Just when I thought I had things figured out, Chavez, changes things up, threw in some more twists and left me scratching my head while turning those pages.
Riveting, captivating, entertaining and dark.
Plus, ugh...Jerusalem beetles. Am I the only one who had no idea what they were? GROSS. I'm with you Cassie, gross, gross, gross.
Thank you to HarperCollins Publishers -William Morrow and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
While driving home from work, Cassie sees a man and a woman fighting on the side of the road. After deciding to intervene, her whole life is thrown into chaos. This suspenseful book had me hooked from the start and not knowing which way to look!
Cassie was easy to root for, a protagonist who actually seemed bright enough to work through the mystery on her own. This is the great benefit of showing vs telling for me. The police officer leading the investigation had a healthy amount of skepticism without veering into stubbornness which can be a pet peeve for me in these types of stories. All in all, I thought it was a very well executed mystery.
The only minor criticism was that I started feeling like maybe there was one too many characters once the big reveal actually happened since I was getting the background characters mixed up.
Holy wow! This book captured my attention from the very beginning and did not let me go until the very end (and if we’re being honest, I’m still reeling).
There is so much going on in this book with so many twists and turns that I cannot even begin to tell you what it is about. There are definitely hints of a domestic thriller, but I do think it goes beyond the confines of that genre.
A great thriller is heart-pounding, fast-paced, and keeps you guessing until the very end. This book definitely does that! The story is definitely farfetched, but if you can appreciate that than I think you would enjoy this one. I continually tried to make sense of the story, but I was not even close in figuring out how everything was intertwined. It was that good!
If you are looking for a new, unique thriller, check this one out. Available 2/18/20.
I truly appreciate Netgalley and the publisher William Morrow for the gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to the publisher (William Morrow Books) and NetGalley for a copy of this book to read and review. I couldn’t put this book down! One night Cassie is driving home when she sees a man trying to murder a woman. She stops it but not before the nan warns her she should just let the woman die for her own good! What follows next is a wild ride as Cassie tries to find her husband who goes missing and who she learns but can’t believe has been having an affair. This was a fast pace thriller with lots of twists and turns! I enjoyed it so much I read it in less than 24 hours!
Really well written! I was on the edge of my seat a few times. Great imagery really put the reader in the moment. I’ll definitely be checking out more books by this author!
4 out of 5 stars
I would like to thank NetGalley and William Morrow for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Veterinarian Cassie Larkin is driving home from work one night when she sees a man assaulting a woman on the side of the road. Feeling like she has no choice but to help Cassie pulls over, gets out of her car and tries to help the woman. When the man sees her he tells her to go away. That he has no plans to hurt her but Cassie does all she can to stop him, including calling the police and getting closer. When the man escapes he takes her van. She knows that he now has her address and the keys to her home.
The next day happens to be Halloween and when Cassie's husband Sam disappears as he is taking her daughter Audrey trick or treating Cassie knows she must do everything she can to find her husband even if it puts her life in jeopardy.
Heather Chavez has written a fast paced mystery that keeps you interested until the last moment when it all comes to a head, revealing a shocking twist.
Cassie Larkin is on her way home from her veterinary business she owns. Once again it’s a late night which means she missed dinner with the family. Close to home she sees a man and a woman fighting and it getting physical. She dials 911 and is told to stay in the car which she doesn’t do. She gets involved with the situation and finds the woman close to death. The man tells her to ‘let her die, and I’ll let you live.’ Kind of a weird statement and then he steals her mini-van, which also contains her purse. The police arrive and get statements and Cassie is finally able to go home.
She’s worried that the man will come after her and the family but the police tell her she should be okay. The next day is Halloween and her husband is taking their daughter out. She gets home late again and is at home and notices they haven’t returned and it’s getting late. She tries to call but no answer. She goes looking for them and finds her daughter but her husband has gone missing. He left her with a woman he knew from school. Then she gets weird messages from him saying he needs time and has been having an affair.
Then she keeps getting messages that are strange, finds out someone is watching her, finds her house bugged and her husband still missing. She is working with the police but no luck finding the man who attacked the woman or her husband. Cassie decides to go on offense and starts her own investigation and finds suspicious people and things that don’t add up. Then she gets shocking news about her past and how it all ties together with what’s going on and makes a last stand that could cost her the life of her family and herself.
This book was so fast paced and action packed that it made it almost impossible for me to put it down(I finished it in two sittings). The characters and the storyline are definitely unforgettable. I would definitely recommend for a quick thriller/suspense read.
This is a debut novel for Heather Chavez... and I must admit that I’m impressed right off the bat!
The cover of this book is also creepy, yet stunning! The rain makes everything just a little more “uncomfortable.”
This fast-paced, high-action thriller will be released on February 18th,2020...just a little over a week away!
I strongly suggest that you get your hands on a copy! I am very thankful for Netgalley and Harper Collins for allowing me to read an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
Late one night when Cassie is on her way home from an emergency surgery performed at her veterinary practice, she sees a man and a woman fighting on the side of the road. She quickly pulls over, calls 9-1-1 but it is in that split second, against the operator’s advice, when she decides to get involved that she will WISH that she didn’t for the rest of her life. Especially since the police don’t seem to believe a word that she’s saying.
“When Detective Rico walked away [ from her], he wiped his hands on his slacks, as if trying to rid them of something unpleasant.”
The madness starts on Halloween evening when the dog that she operated on the previous night returns even sicker than before, she returns home to find that her husband is missing and her daughter has been left alone with strangers.
The following morning her husband’s car is gone, he won’t answer his phone to explain ...but he will answer texts...
“It’s complicated...I’m not alone.”
There were many times that my jaw-dropped. “I bit my tongue with enough force to draw blood.” Cassie, my friend, I would have too if my mouth hadn’t been closed while desperately trying to figure out your situation.
“3...2...1...” That’s certainly a countdown, the messenger is sending you a warning, but what happens when you have no idea when the timeline starts and stops, and what will happen when the clock strikes 1...?
Of course I’m not going to give you any clues as to what occurs...now what would be the fun in that? The best part of a mystery are the unexpected plot twists, and this has quite a few. They are also explained quite well. You aren’t left wondering to yourself... saying ...”wait, huh?” Many times thrillers have dragged me down a path that make ZERO sense but thankfully this is not one of them.
My rating has been knocked down a star simply because of unanswered questions that I have. I would’ve preferred the story to have gone on a bit longer if it wrapped up some of it’s loose ends. Closure is something that I crave in books. This story is somewhat closed, but bits and pieces are still left missing.
That being said, this book is pretty damn fantastic. There is a wide cast of characters that are thoroughly flushed out. Detective Rico, strict and accusatory when he must be, but also a family- man at heart was one of my favorite characters. I hope in the future that there could be a series starring him as a main character? Maybe? PLEASE.
I connected immediately with our main character Cassie, a wife, veterinarian and a mother of two: Leo, 15 and Audrey who is in the first grade. She is quick-witted and sarcastic with comments like...” I had spent so much time with the police lately I wondered if I should whip up some friendship bracelets.”
I identified with her...”When I was single my clothes remained in puddles on the floor until laundry day.” And The old me was the kind of girl you’d love to take to a party. She mixed a killer mojito, knew the answer to every trivia question, and had your back if you picked a fight with your ex’s new girlfriend, even if you were in the wrong.” ( Me, in my 20’s!) “ But old Cassie could be a bitch to live with. She was surly and could hold a grudge , and she didn’t always think clearly, especially after too many of those mojitos.” ( Also me in my 20’s, sub the mojito for a Vodka Red-bull.)
I definitely recommend this book and will be looking forward to future titles by this author. 4 solid stars.
Stay tuned below for the questions/concerns that I wish I knew the answers to. NOTE: will contain spoilers!
1. What happened with the picture of Sam having sex with another woman? (Not literally- I know it was likely burned in the fire at Zoe’s house.) It was said that after studied it was doctored so that the top of the woman/girl was made to look younger but it was definitely still him with another woman and verified to be in the present day due to a scar. Who was this woman? It clearly wasn’t Cassie/ Megan.
2. Did Cassie ever return to the coffee shop and fulfill her cash promise to the barista? If so, was anything else said?
3. Why wasn’t Sam honest with Cassie/ Megan up front about the “supposed” scandal. He hadn’t gone to work for weeks, so where was he going? Why was he pretending to have the flu?
4. What EXACTLY happened on Halloween night? I wish that a timeline was given at the end and better explained.
5. Were the bloody zombie teeth just a plant at the abandoned house? Was Sam ever really in the house at all?
6. What type of punishment will Helen receive for her deceit?
7. What happens now with Leo and the other boy on the field? As well as the social media posts? Was that part of this situation too, or something else entirely to throw the reader off?
The novel started out with a bang, and I flew through the first 50% or so. However, the second half of the book lost its way a little bit and it just became too difficult to suspend my disbelief in the way everything played out. There were so many twists and turns which, while somewhat exciting, also made it tricky to keep track of who was who and exactly what was going on. I often had to pause and really think about how to connect the dots, which took away from the enjoyment of reading a little bit. Overall, this was a pretty quick read but the implausibility and chaos of the ending left me wanting more.
