After reading this one i ordered it for-the library. Such a good book for kids to understand crying.

Review run date was set for 20 April 2020 for Netgalley, unfortunately life stood at a standstill as I finished the final semester and three subjects of my studies. On 28 March 2021 I was set to write the review and my health became an emotional roller coaster so here I am today 04 October 2021 going to write my review will be post on my blog, Facebook blog, Amazon.com.au, goodreads, kobo, googlebooks and iBooks.
A great book for parents to read to children who ask on why people cry young and old. For children who don’t understand emotions, feelings or have empathy or sympathy for those who are crying. The story book tells of why people cry maybe they are sad, happy or their feelings are hurt. This is definitely a book that I will indeed keep on my bookshelf as I might need to read again to my autistic boys or keeping for my future grandchildren.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review for Netgalley. This book was beautifully written and illustrated. It features a mom explaining to her son the variety of reasons people to tend cry about. I thought it was written in a very thoughtful and kind way. so good!

"Some days we cry because we call out for a hug but all we get back is an echo."

Why Do We Cry? begins with a boy asking his mother why we cry. There are many answers to such a question and the mother helps the boy explore the many reasons why we may shed tears.

As the mother explains the reasons why we cry, the illustrations become a bit surreal, to show the emotions and feelings associated with crying, from sadness to anger to grief. The mother compares and contrasts, all the while weaving a poetic story about her own life or memories and emotions.

This book reminds us that it is okay to cry, that crying can be a release, a way to heal, or let go. It helps us understand the difference between emotions and how they affect us.

There's an educational spread at the end of the book that teaches us the different types of tears, one of which--emotional tears-- is featured in this book, what they are made of, and even how much they weigh!

My Thoughts
“….our tears go in search of the answers we need” – so goes one of the lines in this book. And it is maybe my favorite line (actually I am not sure, since every other one is equally favored as well!)

Why Do We Cry takes the reader on a fantastical journey through vivid illustrations and heartfelt, gently flowing prose to explore the many reasons we cry, and how it helps us. The book points out that we cry because we are sad, angry, confused, overwhelmed, excited, happy, and sometimes simply because, and at other times for another of those umpteen human emotions.

More importantly, I truly appreciated that the book’s message that it is OK to cry. The book uses both the details and expressions in the illustrations, as well as the metaphors and direct text to inform and help the readers. I also loved the ‘All About Tears’ page at the end of the book that includes facts about tears and a couple of activities as well.

A great resource for parents and caregivers to help answer (and even understand for themselves) that difficult question, “Why do we cry?”

Times have changed, but for years, boys were told not to cry. In this story, Mario asks his mother why we cry. His mother has to think about it for a few moments and then she shares ideas with her young son. The text is beautiful in this book. The reasons for crying are not just simple answers they are metaphorical and poetic. The illustrations are not direct to the text, but hint at what is meant. I read this to my 6 year old grandson and we had quite a discussion about each page and each reason for crying. He is a very emotional child, so this was a great book to read to let him know that it is okay to cry. Kids can still be mean about crying and tease others calling them cry babies, but not nearly as often as in the past. I loved this beautiful book and think it needs to be in every family and school library to help children understand that crying is normal. The end pages includes some scientific facts about tears with some activities as well.

Crying is an emotion that is overwhelming and sometimes confusing. Children wonder and may ask questions about it, but adult may wonder too especially how to answer these important questions. This bo is an interesting and helpful way of approaching this question. This is a picture book using poetic language and metaphors to explain crying. Through a story it explains tears, reasons for crying, show we all cry and it is fine to cry. We need to cry for many reasons. Sometimes we find it difficult to express how we feel in words, but crying is a language everyone understands. Tears flow in joy, sadness, pain and for other reasons. This story shows why we cry. It also has a discussion resource in the back that includes science and physiological function information. The beautiful and vivid illustrations help the story along very well. If you ever find yourself wondering how to answer this question this is a good book that will help. Parents, guidance counselors and teachers will find this book helpful. We recommend Why Do We Cry? for your home or school library.

This book was beautifully written and illustrated. This lovely picture book features a mom explaining to her son the many reasons we may cry. There are a range of emotional and physical reason for tears and Mario's mom takes us through some of those reasons in a thoughtful and poetic way. I also appreciated that the book explained some of the science behind crying. I would highly recommend this book and plan on purchasing it for our school library.

This was a great children's book that explains the different reasons people may cry. It was a cute story about a mother and her son explaining complex emotions. I would definitely recommend!

I barely have any words to describe a book as stunning as this. What I will say instead is that this book is very important, for both children and adults alike. And this conversations about crying, pain, healing needs to be had with every child.

This was so beautiful! And the pretty illustrations are so well connected to the mom's answers.
There are surely a lot of reasons why one cries, and this book peacefully chases and capture them perfectly!
By the end there's even an explanation about the different kinds of tears, which I as a grown up didn't know.
Can't wait to read it with my little one coming!

Why Do We Cry, written by Fran Pintadera and illustrated by Ana Sender, is such a lovely book! After a young boy asks his mother why people cry, we are taken on a journey through the mother's memories and emotions while she explains to her son the reasons that people cry. The book concludes with factual information about tears and some thoughtful questions you can discuss with your reader. The words are child appropriate and the illustrations are beautiful. This is a great story to begin a dialogue about feelings with your reader, but it will also resonate with adults. My favorite line is " Sometimes we cry because we can't find the right words. Lucky for us, tears speak an infinite language."

Why Do We Cry? is an sweetly illustrated and sensitively written book for young readers. Originally published in Spanish in 2018, this English translation released 7th April 2020 from Kids Can Press is 34 pages and available in hardcover and ebook formats.

The book takes the form of a dialogue between a mother and son about why people cry and why it's good to examine and experience negative emotions so we can process them and what function tears (and crying) actually serve physiologically and emotionally. The text by Fran Pintadera (weblink in Spanish) is supported and enhanced beautifully by the nuanced illustrations by Ana Sender.

This would make a superlative reading circle, library group, or classroom read for youngsters. There's a short discussion resource at the back of the book which includes some science based information on tears and the physiological functions they perform.

Learning to process strong emotion in a positive and constructive manner is -vital- for development. I appreciated that the dialogue was sensitively handled and that the author chose to make the child male was a nice touch. I think that this could be a very valuable book *especially* given our current pandemic world situation.

Five stars. Beautiful little book with universal relevance.

I read this aloud with my 5yo and thought it did a good job explaining a very complex thing - tears. The colors were vivid and my daughter said the pictures were pretty. We, rather I, enjoyed the "FAQ" about tears at the end - we were able to talk about the questions after the book and count it towards out science for homeschooling to day and that was lovely.

I have been training and teaching visually impaired students for the past three years. I have spent, therefore, a lot of time thinking about the eyes. That's what really caught my eye (hehe) when I first saw this book available on NetGalley. I wasn't expecting a complete book about the anatomy of the lacrimal glands or other structures of the eye, but I was happy when I got to the end of the book and saw that there was in fact some technical information about eye, tears, and the role of tears in vision. Not much, but enough for a young reader. 

What I really love is that the author gave us plenty of reasons why we cry and explored them both with words and with pictures. The artwork is outstanding and somewhat ethereal at times. Other times the artwork is kind of frightening and this may require some adult guidance. (Maybe.) The story is wonderful. I happened to read a version translated into English from Spanish and found the story still managed to flow quite nicely. 

This is the kind of book too where I think an educator or a parent might be able to do some guided learning especially for a student with an emotional disability. If the student is having a particularly difficult day, it might prove useful to access the book and identify why tears are flowing at any given moment. Giving a student an opportunity to identify with a character or a picture might be a great way for the student to access his/her own emotional state instead of insisting they come up with their own words. 

I like books like this. It's not too small for big kids with emotional difficulties; and it's not too tall for those wee ones in our classrooms either. I think it is spot on even for adults who simply need to be reminded that crying is a part of life, a part of every human being on earth, and that there are many reasons why we shed tears. 

I think this is a great little book, well written, beautifully illustrated, and accessible across the age spectrum. I would like to see this book transcribed into braille and I hope there are some plans for this to be done.

Why Do We Cry will be in my top books of the year. There is nothing comparable to turning a page and having your breath taken away. The hardest thing to explain to children can be emotions. This book is the end all be all for that problem. I haven't and probably will never see a depiction of tears like this again.

Why Do We Cry was such a beautiful book about all the reasons we cry; good, bad and sad. The illustrations perfectly captured the spirit and tone of the book. I couldn't wait to share with my children. At the end of the day, it is always okay to cry no matter who you are.

This was a book whose title actually my eye and spiked my curiousity. Although we all cry I am not quite sure what I was expecting for the book to actually be whether it was a nonfictional telling with all the scientific facts or something that is completely different due to the cover.

The formatting of the book is quite simple as it follows a question-and-answer type. The boy who is with his mother at the park asks the leading question and instead of his mother changing the subject she actually somewhat opens up. Atlhough her son doesn't get to see the adventures that the reader gets to she explains what emotional tears are and how different feelings are expressed by them.

The pictures are colorful and bright while open to their very own interpretation due to there are various monster creatures lurking around.

But the cream of the book was a nice little factual section at the back and a few activities to allow readers to interact with it. And so do I recommend this book? I most definitely do, especially if you are in the process of teaching children about their feelings.

Absolutely loved this story. Easy to read for a social emotional lesson as well as an everyday book for my own children. Lovely simple and relatable story. Also loved beautiful illustrations! A great addition to any library 📚
