Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This book is simply beautiful! It read like poetry to me. Ultimately, I did give it 4 stars, because it felt a BIT simplistic and/or short to me, but I really, really love the message behind this one! This is another one I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for to add it to my classroom library!
This was so cute and heartwarming to read! The art style was very different to what I've been seeing lately and I really enjoyed it.
Told with lyrical text and fluid illustrations comes a picturebook that asks us, "why do we cry?" Mario's mother indulges us: it is because we are sad or hurt or overwhelmed, and it's the one language everyone can understand. With metaphor and mimetic images, Mario's mother explains the many reasons one might cry--even from happiness! This text allows for a safe, honest discussion about our emotions that is as educational as it is beautiful.
The backmatter, for those more geared towards its educational purposes, is so interesting--even I learned something new about tears and crying from it! Overall, it's a great book perfect for grades K-2.
" Why do we cry?' Mario asks his mother. Thoughtfully his loving mother explains to him some of the reasons why humans cry. Between the prose and illustrations young children will get an understanding of why tears flow from our eyes.
Tears are a way of expressing our emotions whether they be tears of happiness, painfulness, or great sadness. The mother tells her son that tears are universal and crying is not a sign of weakness. Mario's mother finally states, "But more than anything, sweetheart, we cry because we feel like crying."
The author also educates readers at the end of the book by including a segment, "All About Tears" which includes: What are tears? What kind of tears are there? What are tears made of? Why are tears good for us? What shape are tears? How much does a tear weigh? and Who cries? Activity suggestions are included also. I loved the book and thought it was well-written. It was originally published in Spain. It would be a wonderful addition to a home library, a classroom, and/or, an elementary school library. I highly recommend it.
So beautiful and poetic!
A little boy asks his mother why we cry and she gently explains all the different emotions expressed by tears: sadness, anger, loneliness, frustration, confusion, and happiness. The pictures are wonderfully expressive. They feature the mother as a young girl experiencing all the feelings she is talking about, and this makes her explanation so powerful. The message of tears being a universal language and helping us in a variety ways (to relieve pain or stress, to express our joy, to empathise with another person to name bu a few) and not knowing gender, race, or age boundaries is a very positive one. This book is a marvelous resource for parents and teachers who are trying to help children develop their emotional intelligence and deepen their understanding of the world.

A great book for discussing feelings with children. Beautifully illustrated. I definitely recommend this one!
I thought that this was a gorgeous little book to read.
The story is sweet and tender and the topic is covered so well.
No hesitation in giving this one 5 stars, I thought it was lovely
Very highly recommended!!
This was a sweet and short story detailing a conversation between a mother and his son when he asks why we cry. She poetically tells him all the reasons humans cry. This would be a great book to help children learn about their feelings.
I am en emotional person. I cry. My daughter is a cryer. My sexy sir is a cryer. I’m surrounded by emotional people. This book was beautiful. It explains different types of tears and different times we cry. What are the reasons? How does tears help?
I really enjoyed all of the symbolism in the beautiful words and illustrations.
I received a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Such a delightful read explaining about emotions and how they can make us cry a different variety of tears and how they can make us feel.
This book is a fantastic book for children to help them understand their emotions and not be ashamed of how they feel or how they release them.
It was a wonderful read. ^^
We discover here, the answers of the mother of little Mario, who asked her "why do we cry?".
Over the double-beaches, we can read a new reason, always very poetic and very well illustrated.
I was touched by the author's speech, which shows that tears can come for many things and that in any case, it's something normal and not a sign of weakness.
I hope it will be translated into French because it's a book that I would love to read to the youngest! ^^
Small bonus: a few pages at the end of the album to explain, in a scientific way, what are the tears. Very nice!
Why Do We Cry is an excellent book to read to your 4 or 5 year olds. It empowers the act of crying instead of depicting it as a weak response. It teaches its okay to cry and that is so important. I love the illustrations they were absolutely stunning. I was so happy to see at the end where it gave actual facts about tears, giving children the science behind a bodily response like crying was such a smart thing to do. Love this and is a story I would read to my children.
A beautifully illustrated, powerful book about a child asking why we cry and the mother's explanation. At the end of the book is some of the science around why we cry and the different types of tears, along with some questions and activities to do with children. Most importantly for me, this book tells us that it is ok to cry and that crying doesn't show weakness or have to mean sadness.
“Why do we cry?” by Fran Pintadera was such a delightful read. This children’s book is perfect for the little ones to get a better understanding of crying and teardrops. I am an educator and I love finding books that I can read to the students.
This book has beautiful written prose and educational content. I think it can help kids understand what crying can mean. There’s multiple meanings as to why someone may cry and the author and illustrator created a story that is fun to follow. At the end of the story, we get educational content that explains things, like what is a teardrop and what they are made of. It also provides possible activities that can help with the kid’s reading comprehension.
Apart from the well written story, there’s also the beautiful illustrations. Both the writing and illustrations work so well together. I can’t imagine one without the other. I highly recommend it to educators and parents!
I received this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This picture book beautifully normalizes the reasons why children (and adults) may cry. It passes no judgment and does not belittle. Rather, some of the many reasons for tears are described; these include anger, sadness and happiness among others. Crying is seen as a normal response to being human. At the end of the book, there is additional information, some of it scientific, about tears. The book is sensitively illustrated with gorgeous pictures that enhance the text. This would be a great title to share with a child you know.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this read in exchange for an honest review.
