Photos of You by Tammy Robinson
This book was an emotional rollercoaster. My heart broke so many times for Ava who was dx with breast cancer.
I think this book gave me all the feels as being a nurse and working with palliative clients I have seen stories like this play out so many times. You also think what if I was in Ava’s shoes what would I do or how would I feel?
Ava had a great outlook on things and I hope if I’m ever faced with something similar I will too.
I will def be checking out this authors others books in the future!
Ahhhhhhh, I had forgotten this was just the preview until I picked it up on my NetGalley shelf lol. I would absolutely like to finish this title.
Grab your Kleenex, this one is a tear jerker. An Emotionally honest, raw account of a terminal cancer journey. Ava reflects on her life as she comes to the end of her journey. This was such an inspiring read, as this woman knew her end was near she was still embracing life, having amazing adventures, living life to the fullest and finding the love of her life when she least expected to.
Since she was a little girl all Ava dreamed of was the lavish wedding she envisioned. Now she realizes this may never happen with her returning cancer, she won't have time to find someone to love and spend the rest of her life with the way she always dreamed. What if she has a wedding while she's still alive, a celebration of her life, all her closest friends and family, the "wedding"of her dreams. Can Ava afford it? that's why you have friends right? One friend posts on social media telling her story and seeking assistance. Then a magazine picks the story up for an article. This one article turns into a series following her on her terminal cancer journey to her wedding. Ava unsure, reluctantly agrees. Much to Ava's surprise she finds a budding friendship with the photographer, James that turns into a relationship. Does James really know what he's getting into, is he prepared to watch Ava die. This heart wrenching, thought provoking love story of finding love in the last moments of your life was such a hard read, but so beautifully written, I wiould highly recommend.
I truly enjoyed reading this preview and I can tell this is going to be a really good read.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this story.
Photos of You promises to be both extremely touching and heart-breaking if the extended preview is reflective of the entire novel. Ava has just learned that her cancer is back and it is terminal. She has some time left and wants to fulfill a childhood dream of having a wedding, so we just get glimmers of what's coming.
The preview is really coming to terms with the recurrence and figuring out how she's going to spend her time. She has supportive parents and two close friends. The writing is easy to read, and I felt like I was there with Ava. I tend to avoid books that make me cry, and this promises a lot of tears, but it also promises hope and beauty. I am looking forward to reading the whole book.
I already sent in a review for the complete book. More details are on that review. It is a great book.
Thank you @netgalley for the extended preview.
Knowing this book will be a tough subject matter. I expected the book to be more gloomy. The chapters went quickly and I already enjoyed the characters based on the extended preview. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the book.
Well this book is definitely going to pull at the emotions. I wasn't sure if this book was going to be for me, the first couple of chapters I wasn't quite into it, but by the midway point of the preview it had me hooked. Her triangle of friendship and support that they offer is exactly what every girl wants. Ava is about to under a hard and changing year and the journey and experiences that it is going to take her on. It is definitely going to be a book I read at home so that I can keep a box of tissues right next to me.
Thanks to Tammy Robinson, Piatkus and NetGalley for the advance preview copy, can't wait to read the rest of it.
On top of posting my thoughts on books on my ever expanding to read list, I recently signed up for NetGalley. A website where publishers and authors post book previews for people to review. I automatically went and found a publisher I have enjoyed other books, Forever, and found this extended book preview, Photos of You.
Its not typically the type a book I go for, but the cover is beautiful, and I was immediately drawn in to the description. I have distant family who has suffered from cancer. Some who have died. A friend who lost her beautiful daughter at two years old. People I went to school with, the same age as me, who have passed on because of the beast that is cancer. Its scary. Its everywhere. So I was surprised to be drawn to a book that reminds me that we are mortal.
In this preview, Forever released the first 10 chapters. It starts right off with Ava finding out her cancer is back, and it's terminal. In shock, she leaves and while breaking down on a bench outside the hospital, has a conversation with a terminal patient, who tells her to not be one of those people who gives up on living life, just because they know they are dying. It sticks with her. So many things she knows she will probably not be able to do before she goes. The one thing that she truly wants, is to have a wedding.
In the first ten chapters, it spans a few months after finding out she is dying, and its rough. Tammy Robinson's use of imagery is flawless, and it fully immerses you into the story. It's beautiful and tragic. It made me feel for Ava, and had me ugly crying from the first chapter to the tenth. The chapters cover her twenty-eighth birthday party (the same day she finds out her terminal diagnosis), telling her parents their only, miracle child is dying, and her two best friends. In the span of a few months, she goes into a deep depression. She relents to her mothers demand to try treatment, but refuses to do the same treatment as before. She is tired, and weak, and sad. Bitter. Which, lets be honest, who wouldn't be? I know I would be mad as hell if my life was being cut short.
By the end of the preview, Ava finds out that the treatment she was taking didn't help at all, and her cancer has spread farther. At that point, she is done. She wants the one thing she can manage before she dies: a wedding. With no groom, and not being able to have a classic wedding, she decides to make it a celebration of her life. A place where she can say goodbye to her family and her friends. She doesn't want a funeral. Its kind of beautiful.
Photos of You by Tammy Robinson will be released February 18th, 2020. I totally plan on buying a box of tissues, a bottle of wine, and finishing what is sure to be an amazing, touching, thoughtful story, that I am sure will have me an emotional mess for days.
I can already tell that I am going to need a box of tissues while reading. Working as a cancer nurse, I know all too well what it is like to be fighting for your life, again. I’m going to have to brace my emotions for the full read.
Ava is young, she has and amazing family and fantastic friends. She also just found out she has terminal cancer and wants to throw herself a wedding as a last wish. This is the kind of material I tend to avoid, with it's highly emotional, sad, premise. However, I found the writing to be excellent and in just a few chapters I am endeared to Ava and her people and want to find out what happens next.
I have tried hard to stay away from this one as I knew very well this is going to get me very emotional but it was fun as well. I am now totally interested to read the full version. Planning a wedding for Ava who has incurable cancer without a groom sounds crazy and fun too. After all, when she knew how much time she has, she definitely goes for the thing she badly wants to experience. In the preview itself, it is visible how the parents of a child with deadly disease are coping. No one can be stronger than them truly.
Based on summary, things are going to get crazier a million times and hopefully Ava enjoys her limited time. Hope there is a miracle in store for her.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the preview!
Ava Green turns twenty-eight on the same day she is given the overwhelming news that she has terminal cancer.
Despite having made a bucket list of all the adventures she'd like to fulfill during her lifetime, Ava realizes more than anything, what she'd always wanted was a wedding and to be loved.
There may be no groom, but Ava enlists the help of her family and friends to assist in planning her big day - one where she can be present to celebrate her life.
But is it really too late for love?
Thank you to Netgalley for this extended preview of Photos of You. So far, the story is heartwarming with witty, fun characters you feel like you must already know in your own life. I look forward to reading the rest!
This is going to be a heart-breaker, but definitely one that has the potential to change lives for the better. I can't wait to read the book in it's entirety and I have all of the chocolate and kleenex ready!
This extended preview definitely left me wanting more of this story and these characters!
The writing and storytelling were wonderful and emotional. I felt like I was right there with Ava as she comes to terms with her diagnosis and plans the wedding. Also, I cannot wait to read what brings her to the point described in the prologue. While I know this book will make me cry, I really want to read the whole thing.
The preview sets up a story of a young dying woman who has dreams of getting married. She decides in her final year she is going to have a wedding. In the short preview I have already fallen in love with her family and friends. I am looking forward to reading the rest and finding out how her story ends.
Ava Green has just found out that the cancer she beat 3 years ago is back with a vengeance. Not even 30, Ava wants to have her biggest wish come true before she dies...to get married...even though she's single.
This excerpt was very emotional and intriguing following Ava's diagnosis and resolution of how she wants to spend her last days. There are some really touching passages as Ava reflects on her life. As far as I've read, the characters seem to be well-rounded and relatable, flawed and hopeful. I look forward to reading the book when it comes out!
This was an excerpt for Photos of You by Tammy Robinson. Thank you to NetGalley and Forever Publishing for the advance copy excerpt in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! What a fantastic book preview of Photos of You. I love the unique premise of this story about a woman who wants to plan her wedding after being diagnosed with a terminal disease. I have never read anything like it; the story is raw and real. I cannot wait to read more!
