Evie is sent to live with her uncle in New York because of a scandal she caused in small-town Ohio. Evie has a talent for being able to tell things from touching objects. She keeps this a secret in NYC. We meet others also with different talents. Meanwhile, people are being murdered by a serial killer with an occult mission. Evie, her uncle, and the gang investigate and find out that the end of the world is imminent if they can't stop the paranormal events. I absolutely loved this book! The book is YA but the characters are all 17 and older making it feel more adult. I loved Theta the best. She is a flapper with a mouth on her and full of the latest slang. All are very realistic characters and real-life people and events are mentioned throughout to add to the reality. The pacing continuously keeps moving forward until the exciting end. I'm eager to continue the series.

I have had this book for ages and finally got around to reading it, now wondering what took me so long. NYC, ghosts and murder mysteries… all things that pique my interest. I have to admit I was initially intimidated by how big the book was, but the story flows pretty quickly and certainly has some moments of extreme tension as I found myself holding my breath waiting to see what happens. I liked the historical elements included in the story, as well as the diversity in the characters and relationships. Some of the characters I felt were more well developed than others… some felt like the same kind of annoying caricatures throughout but that being said, I still really loved this story.
My one eye-rolling chuckle is if people with “powers” were supposed to be so secretive and rare, what are the odds that almost everyone that Evie encounters in this story has some kind of power?!
What this book sets up and where it leaves off has definitely got me needing to read the sequel ASAP!
