An woman who goes back to her family house which is a funeral home to investigate the death of her loved ones. She finds out nothing is how it seems and everything she ever knew was wrong about her family. Most families have skeletons in their closet but what happens when those skeletons get out. This is a great read that kept me guessing the whole way.
This has become a series of characters that I have grown to love. It is my first crime series where the people are all the same and the story just continues to build. Reading books one and two is a must, and thankfully book three has a great recap of the other two in case you aren't binge reading the series. I feel so many things gathering closure, but still have so many quesitons pertaining to the Undertakers Daughter series!
These books are so good! I tend to jump in and out of series without taking the books in order, but with this series, I've read most of them. This series about Rowan never fails to keep my interest. We have the twisted mind of a deranged serial killer, Julian. He has his secrets, and Rowan has some secrets of her own about him. We also have a fun yes damaged romance that will have you longing to know how things are resolved. I can't wait for another wonderful story from Webb.
Another book by Debra Webb! This author keeps writing amazing books. I can’t say enough about her work! I am a huge fan and am always excited when a new book comes out.
I am sorry for not reviewing fully but I don’t have the time to read this at the moment. I believe that it wouldn't benefit you as a publisher or your book if I only skimmed it and wrote a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for not fully reviewing!
While I enjoyed this book for the most part, I was into it a good way before I realized it was #3 in a series. My plan is to go back and read the first two before I can truly give this one the review it deserves.
Thanks to Debra Webb, Harlequin and NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
I have really enjoyed this series and The Darkness We Hide was great! I love Debra Webb’s writing style and am a huge fan of these books! I highly recommend. You could read this one as a stand-alone, but I would recommend reading the other first.
Thank you to MIRA and NetGalley for this ARC.
I didn’t realize that The Darkness We Hide was the finale in the Undertaker’s Daughter trilogy when I read the blurb and decided to read it for this blog tour. Debra Webb did a fantastic job of catching me up to speed with the previous two installments so I knew what I’d missed. Dr. Rowan Dupont had left her job with the Nashville police and returned to her family’s funeral home almost a year prior to this book after her father was murdered at the hands of a twisted serial killer that Rowan knew as who she thought was a friend. Julian Addington has continued to toy with her even though the police and FBI have tried to track him down for months.
Rowan’s running her family’s funeral home and serving as the undertaker, trying to live a normal life with her childhood best friend Billy, who also happens to be the chief of police of their small town of Winchester, Tennessee. While their relationship has blossomed into something romantic, Rowan is waiting for Julian to take away everyone she loves before he takes her life, and Billy is at the top of the list. As she digs deeper into her mother’s past, who committed suicide when Rowan was just a tween, Rowan uncovers more secrets and lies than she knows what to do with. These clues lead her and Billy into much more dangerous territory–physical and emotional–than she’s ever faced.
I really enjoyed Rowan as a character. She was loyal, caring, and she really put those she loved first. She does have some big abandonment issues to face, and that leads to cold feet when it comes to commitment with Billy. The supporting characters in The Darkness We Hide were well fleshed out and unique, and I didn’t have a hard time remember who was who.
I give The Darkness We Hide a 4.5 out of 5. I think I would have been more invested in the final twist if I’d read the entire series, but it was still exciting and effective nonetheless. The small town Tennessee setting lent an air of claustrophobia at times, but also a cozy familiarity as well. The pacing was nice throughout, and the suspense definitely built until everything explodes near the end. I really enjoyed the epilogue. Everything wrapped up neatly.
this was a really good mystery novel, the characters were great and I really enjoyed trying to figure out what was going on.
This is book #3 in the Undertaker's Daughter series. I have only read book 2&3 but I just loved this series. I have book #1 on my TBR pile for hopefully over the winter. I love how the author can make characters that you just fall in love with, keep you turning the page to see what will happen next with all the suspense, secrets and lies and also of course those nasty characters that you hope don't make it to the end. This book could definitely be read as a stand alone because the author does do a fantastic job at summarizing the other two books into this one for anyone new but also doesn't over do it and bore the reads that have read the previous books.
So many lies, family secrets get uncovered in this book. Rowan has to be one of my favourite characters - likable, relatable, caring, badass, plus I just love her dog. With all the suspense in this novel there is still time for a budding romance!
It was hard to put this book down. I can't wait to read other series by Debra Webb.
I really have in the past enjoyed reading stories from this author but I must have missed prior books in order to really enjoy this. I always felt as if I were missing something that would have made this more than just an okay read for me.
As Rowan delves into her past and finally tries to move forward with her present she knows she can't let her guard down. Rowan is discovering things about her mother that she isn't sure she understands. The mystery of who Julian is and why he is obsessed with Rowan and why he was obsessed with her mother also becomes clear. She knows in order to stop him she has to understand more about him. But this doesn't alleviate her fears, the thought that she is putting her friends and her newly evolved relationship with Billy in jeopardy. Julian will destroy everyone and everything she loves until she stops him.
The truths that are uncovered in this book I didn't see coming but make so much more sense as to why this is all happening. But even if she can stop Julian will this truly be the end? There are more characters that you get to know in this strange little town and more people that could be put in jeopardy.
I truly love this series and I hope this won't be the last time we see Rowan and Billy.
A twisted, crazy story! This book is part of a continuing story and the preceding books are essential to read before this one. I binged them all and it was well worth it! The Darkness We Hide is the finale of The Undertaker’s Daughter series featuring Dr. Rowan Dupont and the serial killer, Julian Addington who has been stalking her for most of her life. This a series that needs to be read in order, despite the author’s references to events from the previous books. You will not be disappointed! I am a serial killer junkie and Webb does this well.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book. All thoughts are my own.
Amazing book. If your looking for a thrilling read this is the book for you. I spent endless nights reading this until it was finished. My heart pounded as I felt like I was transported into this book. Definately reccomend
Debra Webb has become one of my "go-to" authors when I want to read a good crime fiction novel. Several of her series, and she has several, fall into my top favorites. The Darkness We Hide is the third installment of the Undertaker's Series and was a marvelous conclusion to a story arc that has been building throughout the previous two books.
Dr. Rowan Dupont is the "undertaker" for Winchester, TN like her father before her and his father before and so on. She lives in a beautifully restored Victorian mansion that also serves as the funeral parlor. To say that her life is and always has been unusual is an understatement, and not just because of her eclectic career choice. Rowan's mother hung herself from the chandelier of the mansion, her twin sister was murdered and unusual murders have surrounded her family all of her life. Friends and allies have betrayed her leaving her with more questions than answers and with secrets piling on top of one another until it appears that the final murder just could be Rowan's.
The characters, as with all of Webb's series, are very well written. We know them intimately by this point and can feel their anxiety, fear and anger seeping through the pages. Although I thought I had this one all figured out after the second installment, I was completely off base - good thing I read this one! It was a great crime fiction read and a satisfying end to the story - or is it? Who knows with Debra Webb!! I want to note, again, that this is the third book and it really is necessary that you read the first two in the series before reading this one. You will be lost, confused and frustrated if you don't. Otherwise, I highly recommend The Darkness We Hide.
This book picked up right where the last one left off (and I'd recommend reading the series in order). It answered SO many questions I have, which alone made me enjoy it. I thought it wrapped up the series very well. All the strange things that have been happening make sense, and the killer is chilling.
Rowan is a good main character - I can totally understand, for example, how difficult it would be for her to choose to go on with her life and have friends and relationships, given what keeps happening to people she loves. The supporting characters are good too. One small example - I liked that Billy's mother actually liked Rowan and was nice to her - most books go with the opposite approach. The pace was steady, and it was a quick read. I'd definitely recommend it to people who enjoy thrillers (but as I said earlier, read the other books first!)
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for letting me read and review the book!
So after I read 2 books back to back that were kind of duds, this was a welcome change of pace. This is third book in this series. I had previously read book 2 and this picks up where that left off with Rowan, the undertaker’s daughter, enjoying a bit of quiet time after chasing off a prolific serial killer that has been haunting her family for years. Knowing that it is only a matter of time before Julian, her serial killer shadow, makes another appearance, Rowan vows to dig out her families secrets in the hopes that she can find answers to so many secrets her family has long kept hidden. The secrets she finds will upend everything she knows and understands about her family history. I remember all these characters, so it was fun to catch up with them again. The pace of this book is a little different than book 2, but there are also far more resolutions in this book, and the ending very much feels like a resolved storyline for all involved. If this series is set to continue, I am curious to see what happens to Rowan and her beloved sheriff boyfriend, Billy. This is a fun, quick read. Can be read alone or as part of the series. Review posted to Goodreads, Litsy, LibraryThing, Amazon, and Facebook.
The Darkness We Hide is a suspenseful and captivating story. It has some interesting but gruesome points regarding the mind of a serial killer. I enjoyed reading this book, but it is the third book of a series, so I felt lost at times. I will reread after I read the first two.
Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read and review this book.
I was provided this book free for review from Netgalley.
I loved this book! I love romantic suspense, there wasn't a ton of romance but there was a bit sprinkled in which was nice. I could never figure out where the story was going which was refreshing since I have read so many thrillers it can be hard to be surprised by a story. Billy and Rowan were both very likable characters which I feel really worked for the plot. I like that you never knew who was playing which side. I would definitely pick up more by Debra. I recommend this for anyone who likes a surprising suspense with well developed characters.
Yeah, this book was really fantastic! I've really enjoyed reading this series, and now that it's done, it feels satisfying, they went though hell, but they survived, and they're stronger, and they've earned this happy ending, you know?
This is the final showdown with Julian. He's been haunting her footsteps for about a year now, when she discovered that he was the murderer way back in the prequel novella. This is also the book that we learn more about her mom, and boy are there still some secrets there!
Oh, and finally, we see Rowan and Billy together. I mean, the sparks flew in the first two books, and they finally did something about that at the end of book 2. But now it's a few months later, they're a solid couple, and it was just so sweet to see them together, worrying about how his parents think of her, things like that. Adorable!
That ending was just so darned satisfying. It brought together several things, the horrible childhood her mother had, what she did, and things that we didn't know about, fully, with the FBI mole. It just was exactly what it needed to be and was fantastic to read!
Loved reading this book, it was a great conclusion to this series and so entertaining to read!
