The Darkness We Hide by Debra Webb is a great suspense book. The ending wraps up in a way that was wonderful. It left me feeling satisfied. The middle was where it really picked up in pace for me. Then, there's the beginning that felt like it was dragging me behind. Debra Webb's cast of characters were my favorite. Just the right amount of everything that made them pop out. From their personalities to their attitudes, I was hooked. The main protagonist's relationship with her male friend finally heats up in this story. I was excited to see where that would lead. This novel was dark, mysterious, and kept me guessing-which is what I expect from suspense novels. The plot, once it picked up, was entertaining. From middle to ending, this tale was good!
Rowan is still struggling to uncover all the secrets about her family. The more she finds out the more entangled the mystery becomes.
Rowan is a great character. She and Billy are fantastic together. I love how this author is very subtle with the love stuff. She always has great lead characters which depend on each other through thick and thin.
This story will keep you on the edge of your seat. This author just keeps putting out fantastic reads. She has the best characters and some of the best plots out there. From the first word till the very end…you will be captivated.
Do not miss this book…heck do not miss the whole series! And I would read them in order. Each book picks up where the last one ended.
I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
This is my first book from Debra Webb and I did not realize that this was the conclusion of a three book series when I started reading it. That didn't cause any issues for me as there is plenty in this book to bring the reader up to where they need to be in this suspenseful conclusion but for anyone that likes to read in order get he other two books first because I can't say I haven't missed anything important.
I love a good suspense story this book about a serial killer who has been after the MC for many years has plenty of tension and intrigue. This book was fantastic int he fact it kept me guessing to the very end.
There are many of secrets and lies uncovered in this book. While I was able to follow the story easily without reading the previous books in the series, I will admit to wanting to go back and read those to fill in some of the blanks so I will most definitely be looking into them.
I love this author's writing style and will absolutely read her other books.
I received this book from NetGalley and Harlequin - Trade Publishing for an honest review.
Not sure what it was about this book but I just couldn't get into it. Its not a bad book just okay just seemed to drag alot and so I would loose interesting. It does have some good moments some okay moments but overall this book was just okay for me.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
This is the third book in the Undertaker’s Daughter series, I have read the other two books and although I think you could still enjoy this book if you had not read them I think it would be a more satisfying read if you know the complete backstory.
I really enjoy this series. I like that the author has used what feels like a fresh storyline. Dr. Rowan Dupont having come back to her hometown to run the funeral home, the family business after her father’s death by a serial killer who as it turns out is her former therapist and friend. In this book the story starts to really come together and all of the secrets come out at the end. We learn so much about Rowan’s family and finally discover why serial killers seem drawn to Rowan as they seemed to have been drawn to her mother, Norah.
Rowan‘s relationship with police chief Billy Brannigan is finally moving in the right direction, they are meant to be together. I loved the way this book ended, it was full of edge of your seat action, suspense and was satisfied all of my questions from the first two books.
I really enjoy this author’s works and I will definitely be looking for more of her books to read in the future. I’m not sure if this is the last in this series but I would definitely be interested about reading more about Rowan Dupont.
Dark, twisty and complicated; fast paced and arresting from page one. I literally couldn't put it down.
A great read for those who like their mysteries a little less cozy.
This is my first Debra Webb book, so I can only give the perspective of a new reader.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and all of its action, but was acutely aware that this is a book in a series. Webb does an admirable job of filling in the pertinent pieces of information, but the character connection was missing. You could tell there were other books and readers of the series would have a much deeper emotional connection to the stories especially the resolution.
That's not to say I didn't really like the characters. I really loved Dr. Rowan Dupont and her boyfriend Sheriff Billy. I didn't even get the backstory that decelops their relationship, and I found myself rooting for them as a couple. So much so, that I am going to go back and read the first 3 books of the series just so that I can fully understand book 4.
So, basically, I would definitely recommend this book to mystery lovers, but I would suggest starting with book 1 as I plan to do. Thanks Netgalley for the copy.
This has been an enthralling series. I would definitely recommend reading it in order as each book builds off the last This installment gives us many answers to questions. Webb is an intelligent and accomplished storyteller. I highly recommend.
Many thanks to Harlequin and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Heart-pounding suspense is what best-selling author and reader favorite Debra Webb does best and she is back with a nail-biting new novel featuring Doctor Rowan Dupont that will once again keep readers on a knife’s edge and on the edge of their seats: The Darkness We Hide.

Scary, terrifying and shocking, The Darkness We Hide features the clever, meticulous, determined and intrepid Rowan Dupont in another nail-biting mystery that will have you reading all through the night.
A top-notch thriller that is simply outstanding, lock your doors and switch on all the lights because The Darkness We Hide is a captivating chiller you will not want to miss.
I hadn't read the previous books in this series and despite there being a long summary of them, I still felt like I was missing something. I did enjoy the book despite this, but think I would have enjoyed it more had I had the pleasure of reading the previous books to help tie together the plot.
Dr. Rowan DuPont is a forensic psychiatrist who assists with homicide investigations. In book 1, The Secrets We Bury, Dr Rowan DuPont finds bones in lake where her sister was found dead. Rowan is adjusting to taking over family funeral business after moving back to Winchester, TN from Nashville. She is still reveling in the mysterious deaths of her sister and mother and eventually her father. The biggest betrayal with which she is grappling is the discovery that her friend/confidante Dr Julian Addington is a serial killer. In book 2, the story continues with Rowan determined to track down Dr Addington who remains on the run.
In this last installment of the Undertaker’s Daughter series, it begins with the untimely death of Burton Johnston who worked as the the Franklin County coroner for four decades.
There was a calm before the ultimate storm of more deaths. The town had hoped that Julian Addington had died and they would be safe again. Unfortunately, there were many people who wouldn’t believe he was dead until they saw his body. Rowan would never feel safe until he was dead or behind bars. She is determined to uncover the secrets from the past which overshadow her mother. Her mother wanted to be a writer but never seemed to produce anything worth reading.
A trip to visit her mother Norah’s grave proves to be more eventual than she wanted. A dead man is found lying on her mother’s grave with a message in his mouth for Rowan. Now, Rowan knows Julian is alive and well back to torment her. Who is this man and how is he related to her mother?
Her investigation into her mother’s past and Julian’s murders don’t sit well with Detective Pryor who resents this vigilante.
Rowan and Billy Brannigan have always known each other before she left for Nashville to work as a forensic psychologist. Meanwhile, her childhood friend becomes chief of police of Winchester. Their paths reunite during the chaos of the serial murders and Julian Addington mystery. Eventually, he persuaded her to acknowledge her feelings for him and he moves in with her.
Together Rowan and Billy uncover secrets and lies which have been entangled over the years. The story becomes more complex but eventually all the questions are answered and mysteries resolved. The only question left is what will become of the dynamic duo?
The Darkness We Hide is the third and final book in "The Undertaker's Daughter" series. I will start by saying that you really can't read the this book or book #2 as stand alones. I would recommend starting with the first book, The Secrets We Bury. The final book has major spoilers for the overall storyline involving Rowan and the serial killer Julian Addington. So, not spoiling anything, I will say this was the perfect conclusion to the trilogy. There are a LOT of question answered and a few surprising reveals. The ending was exactly what I wanted for Rowan. I highly recommend this trilogy!
This is my second book from Debra Webb and didn't realize that this was the conclusion of a three book series when I started it. That didn't cause any issues for me as there is plenty in this book to bring the reader up to where they need to be in this suspenseful conclusions.
I love a good suspense story, and this tale of a serial killer who has been after the heroine of the story for many years has plenty of tension and suspense. Many times in books like this you can see what's coming ahead, but not so much The Darkness We Hide and I liked that it kept me guessing to the very end.
There are many of secrets and lies uncovered in this book as one would expect in the conclusion of a series. While I was able to follow the story easily without reading the previous books in the series, I will admit to wanting to go back and read those to fill in some of the blanks. I also liked that there was some romance to the story between Rowan and Billy.
Overall, I really do like this author's suspenseful writing and would absolutely pick up other titles from Debra Webb.
An ARC was provided by the publisher. This is my honest review.
🔪🔪🔪🔪 out of 5
After reading the previous book in this series I was seriously hooked- so many things were also left unanswered that this last book in the series was essential reading! (And this folks is why I hate cliff hangers and books about the same couple).
Our heroine is surrounded by death. She grew up as the undertaker’s daughter and now runs a funeral home herself, and she finds out her mentor and friend is a serial killer and her past is shrouded with more death. Now is the time to catch a killer and answer all the unanswered questions that surround her mother and twin sister’s deaths.
First of all I definitely recommend reading the other 2 books in the series first as this is very much the climax of the series. The book was well written even if I didn’t agree with some of the psychological reasonings for deaths (like I did more than 2 psych courses in uni). But it packed a punch and it was a great conclusion to the series.
The Darkness We Hide is the finale of The Undertaker’s Daughter series featuring Dr. Rowan Dupont and the serial killer, Julian Addington who has been stalking her for most of her life. This a series that needs to be read in order, despite the author’s references to events from the previous instalments.
Rowan has finally gotten the answers she sought. Answers that were horrific, shocking and difficult to wrap one’s head around them. Readers can relate to the variety of emotions she felt on learning the truth. Despite the horrific nature of the revelations she got the closure needed to move on.
The author introduced a few new players who brought their own share of what the hell moments. These along with the existing characters would have the reader wondering who can and cannot be trusted. Almost everyone appeared suspect.
Readers will enjoy how the storyline involving the serial killer developed. What was of most interest was the manner in which the author revealed his identity to Rowan and how he escaped capture all these years. However, one may find the showdown with the serial killer disappointing. The build-up leading to that moment was intense, but when the showdown occurred it did not deliver as one would hope.
The romance between Rowan and Billy, which was served as a side dish, developed nicely and watching them finally get their happily ever after was a treat.
Conclusion/Recommendation.
Overall, The Darkness We Hide is an entertaining, suspenseful and captivating story. It depicts interesting yet gruesome points regarding the mind of a serial killer. Recommended for fans of suspense and thrillers.

Synopsis: Some secrets are worth dying for.
For months, Doctor Rowan Dupont has been staring death in the face. It followed her back to her hometown of Winchester, Tennessee, ten months ago, cloaking the walls of her family’s Victorian funeral home like a shroud. In investigating the mysterious deaths of her loved ones, Rowan has unearthed enough family secrets to bury everything she’d previously thought true. But each shocking discovery has only led to more bodies and more questions; the rabbit hole is deeper than she ever imagined.
Despite settling in to a comfortable life with Police Chief Billy Brannigan, Rowan knows dangerous serial killer Julian Addington is still out there. She can’t let her guard down now. Not when she’s this close to ending his torment once and for all. But with a storm brewing on the horizon, she’ll get only one shot before the impending darkness takes hold, threatening to wipe away every truth she’s uncovered—and everything she holds dear.
Review: I had to DNF this book. It was very hard to keep everything straight with it being a third book and I’d rather wait to read the first two before I jump in. This isn’t a DNF because the book is bad, it’s a DNF for now because I need to make a book review for this and I don’t want to DNF a book with amazing writing and characters because I can’t understand what’s going on.
Verdict: Read book 1 and 2 before this!
A unique series that has suspense, romance, intrigue and combines the FBI, local police and a need to understand family history.
In this story we see life is starting to go to normal, but with an eye to the unknown as they still haven’t caught the main serial killer, they still don’t know who the mole is, and their are still questions about family history and dynamic. But in this time a romance has emerged and it is great to see some joy for the main characters. This is the end of this storyline and I would recommend reading all the books in order as each story provided hints and information that all comes together in this book.
The twists and turns that this story took were incredible and I did not see some of them coming. Parts of the final showdown were predictable, but not the majority and I enjoyed the secretive nature that unfolded. This would be a great binge read and I loved that I felt part of the journey from the first page of the first book. Throughly entertained and plan on reading more from this author.
Thank you for the chance to share my opinion and read this book!
I love this writer and this series . It is fast paced and love the characters. Highly recommend.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book 📖
Looking into the mysterious deaths of her loved ones, Rowan Dupont only found more questions and more secrets than she had bargained for. Each discovery had led to more bodies and deaths, and the serial killer Julian Addington is still at large. This is her final chance to take him down for good.
This is book three of The Undertaker's Daughter Series. I think it would help to have read the earlier books first, though there are summaries of pertinent information from the prior books woven throughout this novel. Rowan is still the undertaker, still dancing around the FBI involvement and the supervision that they and the local police have. It was a quiet four months since the close of the prior book, but there are deaths again. The coroner died just before a breakfast meeting with Rowan, and apparently, he was investigating something about her family history. Discovering his evidence leads her to dig more into her mother, though there are other deaths and a mystery visitor that start pointing her in the correct direction.
I didn't expect the past that tied Julian and Norah or the lengths to which Norah had gone to try to keep herself and her family safe. It feels sudden, given how much secrecy there had been earlier in the trilogy, but does explain the level of obsession. Julian had been so terrifying because of how he was able to slip through security checkpoints and go undetected for so long; that does get explained at the close of the book as well. There are a few different threads throughout the book that get tied up at the end, actually, and the epilogue provides a happily ever after that I had hoped for but almost didn't expect to see given the tension level throughout the series. This a thriller series more than a romance one, but hits both notes very well.
An action packed suspenseful book which gripped me in most parts. But having not read the earlier books, I did not get nuances of the story, though the author had summarized the story. I took it to be the chase of a serial killer.
Rowan had been stalked by a serial killer all her life who tormented her by killing her loved ones, keeping her as the absolute last. Her relationship with police chief Billy was also progressing. But life was uncertain until the killer was caught or killed.
I have read many books by the author, so I knew what I was getting into. The characters took time to be familiarized to, but later I could just follow Rowan as she went about unfurling the secrets which went back decades to her parents’ deaths. The aura was dark and suspense and a sense of danger was found in every corner.
The protagonist was the undertaker which was something new for me. There were twists and turns in the book along with a Serial Killer Club which were fascinating. Overall this was enjoyable, I would have probably loved it more had I the read the previous two books.
