I don’t know about this one for sure I just couldn’t get into it at all but I really tried I mean really tried maybe I’ll try to pick it up again one day
I really liked the premise of this, especially when I wasn't sure if Lee was real or not.. But the longer it went on, I felt like it spiraled and was repetitive. I love that it's different and strange!
I truly enjoyed this book. It was a little far fetched but definitely different from any books I have read before. The story is about a girl who has a twin that lives in the forest. No one knows about her sister and just assume that Jolene was left by her mother who was a "wild girl" and believe to have been murdered/kidnapped. However, when Lee commits a crime and attacks someone from town everyone thinks it's Jo. Jo basically goes on a mission to save her sister but also to save herself. The books is a great thriller and at times you are quite sure what Jolene "Jo" will do. The ending does end quite abruptly or a little too quickly for me. I am thinking maybe there may be a sequel? But overall a good book and recommend if you are up for unique read.
This was heartbreaking!
I felt so bad for both girls and I honestly didn’t know what to make of the book at first because it threw you into the middle of it but I found myself dying to get back to the book to see what would happen.
The writing was so raw and real and it was believable about small towns and trailer trash. This really tugged at my heart strings.
I wanted to love this one, I really did - creepy Appalachian YA lit centered around sisters, mystery and backwoods rambles sounds *right up* my alley, but the writing style and pacing of the plot really detracted from the appeal of story. The beginning, middle, and end were unevenly paced, the writing was extremely repetitive and while I wanted to connect to Jo and Lee's story, it never did happen. There wasn't anything that I actively disliked with this one, but it really was just okay.
This book built up such a cool creepy vibe that I love in a thriller. I wasn't "wowed" by the ending, but the rest makes it worth recommending.
I want to thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for giving me the opportunity to review this book. I admit in my joy at joining NetGalley I may have been overzealous in my requesting numbers. As this book has already been published, I am choosing to work on the current upcoming publish date books in my que. As I complete those I will work on my backlogged request and will provide a review at that time. I again send my sincere thanks and apologies.
This was a very atmospheric, eerie book but I really struggled to connect with or care about the characters. I really feel like if they had been fleshed out just a teensy bit more, I would have loved this one.
2 stars. I DNFed this at chapter 6. I had been reading this for months and could not muster up any care for the life of me so I skipped to the end of the book and I am so glad I didn't sit here and reading the whole thing would have been a waste of time. More thoughts to come.
Due to being a high school English teacher, I am often behind on writing reviews. Here is a summary of my initial thoughts.
Great story and loved the romance. Loved the cast of characters and how the story came to be. Great story and I would read this author again.
DNF
This should not be recommend to fans of Sadie. It isn't like it at all. The characters were all annoying and it was poorly written.
Very eerie and atmospheric, but I really struggled to connect with the story and care about the characters. Sometimes books just need one more revision to be perfect, I think this was an example of that.
This book sounds like an amazing thriller and the plot sounds different then anything I’ve read before but the progression of the book was a little slow and we are left with some unanswered questions and some half answered. I wish the story had more to it since it’s so different, I mean a twin who eats rabbits raw like? That’s insane, but like always you should read for your own. The writer seems to know what she wants to say but more answers would of made this a 4 1/2 and not a four.
This book was very suspenseful. I loved reading it. I had no idea where Jo l energy and Lee would end up at the end of the book and that's what I really enjoyed about it.
Jolene has a secret twin sister that she met when she was 5 years old. The thing is... her sister lives in the woods and no one knows about her. One night Jolene is out with her friends and her sister attacks one of the boys from town that went with her to see a haunted bridge. Since no one has ever seen her twin sister, Jolene is accused of attacking the boy. Jo now needs to decide if she tells the world about her sister or does she ruun away with her?
The characters are a little hard to connect with just because Jolene doesn't make decisions that make sense all the time and the story is repetitive. But you never know what is going to happen next and what secret is going to be revealed. Overall I would recommend to someone who enjoys thrillers.
Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy.
Unfortunately, I could not get into this book at all. The premise of this book was interesting and the comparison to Sadie is what grabbed me and made me go back. My general rule is if I can read the first chapter or two of a book, put it down, and not think about it again then I don't usually go back to it. I gave chapter two a shot and I just could not go any further.
A tale of two sisters who can't stay away from each other, for better or worse. Jo and Lee are twin sisters, but no one knows about it except them. Jo grew up in Ohio while Lee is raised off the grid in the woods. Everything changes when Lee spies her sister with a boy in the forest--and attacks him, forever changing their lives.
Some Kind of Animal is everything I loved: dark, atmospheric, unexpected. and yet just as beautiful in its bleakness and feral ruthlessness. All the female characters are strong and complex, with intense ties to one another. Overall, I loved the story and I hadn't expected to. That alone deserves 5 stars in my book.
Jo has a lot of secrets, and her family's secrets cause her a lot of trouble. Even after her mother's disappearance fifteen years ago, the townspeople still talk. Her biggest secret? Jo has a twin sister who lives in the woods, and one day she does something that brings Jo into the spotlight.
The premise of this story was so interesting but it didn't grab me like I was hoping it would. I felt sorry for Jo and was a little confused at times.
Such a beautifully written tale of two sisters who can’t seem to stay away from each other.
Jo is fifteen, living with her aunt in rural Ohio. She has a secret she’s been keeping from everyone in her life for 10 years: Jo has a sister, a twin named Lee. Lee has been pretty much on her own since she was little, living off the grid in the forest, visiting Jo at night. When Lee catches Jo kissing a boy in woods one night she attacks him, setting off an explosive chain of events that will change both their lives forever.
I absolutely loved this story! It was dark and atmospheric, bleak and somehow beautiful. I loved the odd but fierce dynamic between the sisters and their friend Savannah. It’s always great seeing such strong central female relationships, especially when reading YA. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by everything about this novel. Can’t wait to read more by this author.
Some Kind of Animal is an atmospheric and beautifully written YA debut novel. The story is about two sisters; one with a secret she is keeping from everyone. The secret is that Jo in fact has a secret twin sister that no one knows about who lives in the woods, eating animals to survive. Jo's secret is safe until her sister attacks a boy from town and everyone assumes it's Jo. Now Jo must decide if she finally tells people her secret or if she takes the fall for what her sister did. The plot is indeed intriguing and the result is a creepy story. If you're looking for a good Halloween read, this is it. Be sure to check out Some Kind of Animal today!
I really did not contact with the characters, but I did feel bad for Jolene. Interesting idea, but not executed to the fullest.
