When author Ward's perfect life is destroyed by the murderous attack on her daughter, she flees her home, leaving everything and everyone behind as she hides from the truth of her daughter's death. Journalist Bree, who has not worked for many years, decides a series of articles on Ward's career and personal life, before and after her daughter's death, could be a best seller. The relationship between the two quickly devolves into a stalker/ victim relationship. This is the center of the story. But Emily Liebert has built some serious layers into the story so we find both women reexamining some people who they thought they could trust. A very good story line with some unexpected additions that lead to a very unexpected ending.
Perfectly Famous by Emily Liebert ⭐️⭐️
This was going to be a 3 star review until the very end; the last chapter ruined it for me. That final twist was too much; way over the top. The book did keep me entertained and it was a fast read. While I enjoyed Bree’s storyline, I had a hard time connecting with Ward and Stevie. I feel that their background should have been more developed in the beginning. I’m sure this would be a fun and entertaining read for some, but that over dramatic ending certainly spoiled the book for me.
When I first started reading Perfectly Famous, I kept confusing the characters, Bree and Ward. Yes, they are single both moms with teen daughters. And yes, they have similar voices on that page. But by about 50 pages in, there were enough distinguishers that I was able to tell them apart, and the book got a little better for me.
Ward is a famous author, who was interrupted at a book event for her most recent release, by the news that her daughter has gone missing. It didn’t turn out okay. She was abused and attacked, and didn’t make it.
Fast forward 5 months and Bree, a divorced mom trying to build a career for the first time in sixteen years, gets it into her head that she is going to write a series of articles on Ward and is going to turn that into a book. Why is she sure this will be a success? Ward has been missing since the night her daughter disappeared.
Bree’s kind of a psycho, stalking Ward’s brother down and visiting Ward’s house, but justifies it as what a reporter needs to do to get the story. She’s also kind of a mess with her dating life. She’s found a nice guy Scott, but has developed a crush on Ward’s brother too. And there’s a bit more drama there than seems necessary.
Ward is also a piece of work. She’s shifty and easily excitable and refusing to work, which everyone thinks is a huge deal, except she lost her daughter only 4 months ago. She reunites with some friends and an ex boyfriend shows up and that whole thing is confusing and unnecessary.
As I write this book, I’m liking it less, but it was somewhat enjoyable for most of the book. But that ending.
Special thanks to Netgalley and Gallery Books for an advanced e-galley in exchange for my honest review.
Was really excited about this book, but it didn't make sense. It was hard to invest in the story and just fell short.
It’s a story about a famous author whose daughter got murdered and decided to disappear. Then a former journalist who happens to be a big fan of her wants to know or uncover the mystery surrounding the daughter's death.
The book is promising, a mother who lost her child tragically with no idea why. The plot was good, and it kept me interested. I'm a bit disappointed with the story flow as it gets to the ending, I felt like there should be more elaboration and action, but overall it is alright.
In Perfectly Famous author Emily Liebert tells the story by going back and forth between the two main characters. Ms Liebert gives the reader some twists and edge of your seat moments. This is the first book I've read by Ms Liebert (won't be the last!) and her writing reminds me of Mary Higgins Clark. I want to thank Net Galley and Gallery Books for an early copy to review.
This was my second book by Emily Liebert (first was Pretty Revenge) and I enjoyed this one a lot more! The plot started off a little slow as you learned some background on each character as they were navigating through present day situations. Most characters and situations were relatable - relationships, raising children, navigating the dating scene, friendships and the ever elusive work/life balance. There were parts that felt tedious and bogged down in unnecessary details, but overall the plot moved along quickly but then really picked up in the last quarter or so. The plot thickens, a few different things all happen at once with some being pretty dangerous. Just when you think the main characters might get their happily ever after, Liebert blows it up! When I finished that very last sentence I sat there just blinking and then reread the last paragraph. WOW!
Perfectly Famous grabbed my attention right away. The first chapter sucked me in and I was enjoying the glorious ride of a good suspense novel until the ending happened. I went from rating this book with 4 stars to sliding down to only 2 stars at the end. I am still trying to figure out what happened and why the author decided to make the finale so...shocking, but yet not really exploring why this ending should be the best fit for the story. It did not make sense to me why some of the things happened and what motivated the characters to act certain way. So with a heavy heart, because I really enjoyed most of this book, I have to rate it with only 3 stars.
Thank you NetGalley, Gallery Books and the author for providing me with an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I have never read a book by Emily Liebert so I didn't know what to expect. To my surprise, the book was better than I was expecting. I enjoyed the character/chapter structure, it made it easy to read and understand each character. At times, Bree's naivete drove me a little crazy but it was all part of the plot. Overall, I really enjoyed the book; however, I wish the very last paragraph was not there...why so twisted?!?!
Thanks NetGalley and Emily Liebert for the advance copy!
Ward DeFluer is a famous writer with it all when one night her daughter goes missing. From Stage Left enters Bree Bennett a recently divorced journalist and a fan of Ward's. Told from Ward and Bree's perspectives it's a fast-paced page-turner which I enjoyed. That ending left my JAW on the floor. A great ending! Thank you to Galley books and NetGalley for my advance copy. I recommend this one for a quick afternoon read. All opinions are my own.
Bored? Nothing else to do?
What possessed Bree to go on an obsessive hunt for her favorite author so she could write her life's story for her?
Bree is divorced and hasn't worked for years. She wants to start back at her journalist job, but it turns into something much more.
Ward DeFleur is an author who writes crime fiction and has an actual nightmare happen to her. Her daughter is brutally murdered on the night of a book signing. Ward leaves the book signing with fans waiting in line when she hears about her daughter and doesn't fulfill her contractual obligation to the publisher because she disappears and hides from everyone.
Will Bree find Ward and at what expense? As her search continued for the author, a text message warning her to stop what she is doing frightened her, but she kept on. Who could have sent that text and what did it mean?
Meanwhile, Ward was still hiding but still not feeling comfortable especially when her old boyfriend made a comment about being at her book signing the night her daughter was murdered.
Many questions arise, and which characters are keeping secrets?
Will Bree find Ward, and will they find Stevie's killer?
There are multiple possible suspects, but I’m guessing you won't figure it out.
The ending twists were definitely a surprise. 4/5
This book was given to me by publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
So, I read the last paragraph to my partner and he said, "I like any book that can end with a bang." This book hooked me from the beginning to the end and I truly enjoyed it.
There are a few gaping holes: how are we expected to believe that Bree, a reporter, would take everyone at face value and not do a little background check? And not just Bree, but other people involved in Ward's life? Those things aside, this was a book that kept me guessing, even as I felt sure that I knew what was going on.
Ward is a bestselling author and mother to Stevie, a teenage girl who is murdered on the first night of a book tour. The author drops out of the public eye and stops writing. Bree is a fan of Ward's, recently divorced, and mother to Chloe, who's about Stevie's age (hence some of the connection Bree feels with Ward). She is getting back into the workforce and gets a job at a local newspaper where she pitches the story idea: locate Ward DeFleur and tell her story since Stevie's death.
Bree has no judgment when it comes to men. Say it with me, if someone seems obsessed and 'off' when you hardly even know him, Don't. Trust. Him. Ward has questionable judgment, too. Again, obsessed is NOT a couples goal. Let's just say that the romance portions of the book were nerve-wracking.
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.
Really enjoyed this book and knew certain characters were not all they seemed but the ending really fell off for me. Definitely a good read if you like psychological thrillers. Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for the ARC.
On the night that famous author Ward DeFleur's daughter disappears, she winds up at the police station answering questions about the possibility of obsessed fans while her daughter is out there somewhere, needing help. She falls apart when discovering her beautiful daughter has been murdered.
A year later, Bree Bennett tries to research more about Ward and the tragedy that occurred the night that she felt lucky enough to meet the famous author. She wants to write about what happened to Stevie, Ward's teenage daughter but can' t seem to figure out where she disappeared to.
Told from two different perspectives (Ward and Bree) the novel is about the mystery of what happens to Stevie and the danger that the ladies are in because the murder has never been found or captured.
Overall the first half of the book is good, with interesting characters. The last part of the book just did not do it for me. I wanted to rate three stars, but the beginning was written so well and I am very hopeful that the last chapter will be resolved with a sequel or a rewrite would be in order. I can't say more without risking spoilers.
Thank you to NetGalley, author Emily Liebert, and Gallery Books for this temporary advance review copy for me to read and enjoy. As always, my opinions are my own.
Great book, an exciting read. I want to see more from this author. The mystery surprised me. Something that doesn’t always happen.
By and large, I loved this book. So many wonderful diversions and red herrings that are very well placed. And, then it just ends. I was left with a great many questions. I'm not sorry I read this story. And, I did enjoy 99% of it. The ending was weak!
I enjoyed this book,, thought it was going to left unresolved but no right in the last second she gave us the info, i suspected it but was glad for the resolution. I liked the characters except for the jewish stereotypes felt unnecessary to play into that but the story flowed and was easy to read and kept my interest
Bree is a recently divorced mother She and her teenage daughter haven’t been getting along. Bree is back working as a journalist. One of Bree’s favorite author Ward De Fleur has her daughter Stevie brutally murdered. Bree wants to write a real crime novel about them.
The book is about Wade, a famous writer, whose teenaged daughter was brutally murdered. Wade has gone into seclusion since her daughter’s death. The second main character is Bree, a recently divorced journalist, who is interested in writing Wade’s memoir. However, Wade does not want to be found. This is a fast read and a good story.
Even though it was a little predictable I just loved this book. The story line is about a writer that received a phone call saying that her daughter was murdered. With a strong plot the story was told from two viewpoints it made the book very interesting and fast paced. I love book about writer and this one wasn’t different, It was the kind of book that I couldn’t put it down until the end. Filled with a lot of actions and suspense I highly recommend it for people who love thriller that keep you on the edge of their seat.
