Solid Psychological suspense, and everyone’s nightmare.
Minka Kent writes books that I cannot put down, and I’ve enjoyed every one that I’ve read.
No blurb or plot spoilers from me, and as always with these types of books, it starts off innocuously enough, and I was trying to pick which bits of the story were pertinent information to remember. The thing with thrillers is that there is always a twist and a connection between party’s that are seemingly unrelated.
Good solid read at 4 stars.
When I was You by Minka Kent is a fast paced page turner of a thriller with plenty to keep the reader interested. The book tells the story of Brienne Dougray, a woman trying to get her life back on track having survived a brutal attack that left her with no memories and a case of anxiety and borderline agoraphobia. She rarely leaves her house, and her only real contact with the outside world is her lodger, Dr Niall Emberlin whose friendship and support is helping her to feel safe again. When a mysterious key arrives addressed to her , she does a little investigating and is shocked and distressed to learn that someone may have stolen her identity. Brienne begins to hunt this stranger down, at first online and eventually in person, but the truth she uncovers is far more disturbing than she ever imagined.
To say any more would potentially spoil the reader's enjoyment, but suffice to say there are layers of betrayal and deception and plenty of twists, turns and shocking moments. This was a fast read, possibly a little predictable but plenty of fun none the less. The ending was a little to quickly and neatly wrapped up in my opinion, but that is a matter of taste.
I read a review copy courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own .
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* They had be in the first half ngl i was like for real another "blame it on metal illness 'thriller' " but luckily that wasnt what it was! better than i thought!
This would have been an absolute 5 star read had the ending not been sort of rushed and nonchalant. This is the storyline I wanted in The Silent Patient and I’m so happy I read this book. The mid-storyline twist was fantastic! I just wanted to keep reading. A perfect example of a great psychological thriller. The ending just felt like the author wanted to quickly wrap up the story which was disappointing. I suggest you read this book if you want to be shocked by a twist mid way through the book that will turn the story on its heels.
I have read other books by Minka Kent, and When I Was You did not disappoint, it grabs you right from the beginning, very well written. Can’t wait for the authors next book.. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy.
I lost sleep reading this one! Sometimes you get lucky and come across a book that you just can't put down. Grab this one and prepare to do nothing else with this all consuming story.
This book was nothing like I read before. The premise is simple, a woman got brutally attacked resulting in some memory loss but with each turn of the page, things get more and more mysterious. Characters are well developed and these people are not always what they seem. The most compelling part for me was the way the story was told. It kept me guessing. Revealing details just at the right time. The author didn't dwell in any graphic images or violence and lets you imagine it yourself. To me, those are the best psycho-thriller story. Of all the books I read from this author I think this is her best work yet. I really don't think I can find a big complaint about this book I loved it from the beginning to the end. Highly recommended.
Brienne Dougray suffers severe memory loss following a brutal attack. The only bright spot in her life is her friendship with her tenant Dr. Niall Emberlin, who becomes her only connection to the outside world. Brienne is shocked to find someone has stolen her identity and wants answers. But the further she looks into the case, the more she questions what is real and what is false and realizes that all may not be what it seems.
When I was You is an easy, breezy afternoon read- not usually the words you hear to describe a thriller! This is what I like to call a thriller lights. There is more drama than twists and the plot is easy to follow and figure out. You need to take a leap of faith and suspend some belief (especially at the end!), but it was worth it for me for the fun ride the Kent takes you on. I could see this making a great movie or mini-series!
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for an ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.
3.5
Twisty and suspenseful.
So, how do i do this with no spoilers?
This is kind of a mind trip with a good side of psychology mixed in.
Brienne has troubles a plenty and even more so with someone mirroring her.
Toss in a Niall and you get a wallop of drama and definitely you have to question Brienne's choices.
Fab story that I really enjoyed. Loved the premise of the story and couldn't wait to find out what was really going on. Fantastic writing and a book that I would recommend to anyone. 10 out of 10.
The last book I read by Minka Kent was The Memory Watcher & I liked it - a lot! I went in expecting the same dark, compelling & twisted thriller, but was left disappointed. To be fair, the book started off well & has a good twist early on, but from there on it gets very predictable.
After barely surviving a brutal attack, Brienne Dougray rarely leaves her house. Suffering from debilitating headaches and memory loss, she can rely only on her compassionate new tenant, Dr. Niall Emberlin, a welcome distraction from the discomfiting bubble that has become her existence. But Brienne’s growing confidence in her new routine is shaken when she stumbles across unsettling evidence that someone else is living as…her. Same name. Same car. Same hair. Same clothes. She’s even friended her family on social media. To find out why Brienne must leave the safety of her home to hunt a familiar stranger. What she discovers is more disturbing than she could have ever imagined. With her fragile mind close to shattering, Brienne is prepared to do anything to reclaim her life. If it’s even hers to reclaim.
Brienne was possibly the only good character in this book even then towards the end her actions come as unsurprising & predictable. The plot was good but I lost interest soon. There was always the feeling, I've read this somewhere before. The story about a woman with some kind of amnesia or identity crisis is already done, so I was expecting some kind of mind-blowing twist at least at the end. I enjoyed reading Minka Kent's last book so this will certainly not be my last.
Thank you, NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer Publishing & Minka Kent for an arc!
A bit too much a slow burner for me. A readable book but didn't keep my full attention throughout. I don't think i could fully connect with the characters.
Not for me. I just rolled my eyes at the main character a lot. I have loved some of Minka Ken'ts works, so this wouldn't stop me from picking up another one. I just didn't care for this one very much.
4 stars! thank you for the advance reader's copy.
This book follows Brienne - a woman who gets brutally attacked and is petrified to go outside and live her normal life. This book was very relatable and the main character was someone I connected with right away. The author's writing was fantastic and I will definitely be reading more by her! SUCH great character development. This book was also full and twists of turns - I was on the edge of my seat until the end!
The beginning was slow going but once that first twist came they just kept coming and picked up the pace. Ended how I expected it to but it did keep my questioning with all those twists. Overall a pretty good read
WHEN I WAS YOU by Minka Kent - Now that is a Thriller! Is the suspension of disbelief required in parts when reading this book? I said it before about other publications, and I will repeat it - the answer is yes, but I still enjoyed the hell out of it!

Thank you, NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer Publishing, for loaning me an eBook of WHEN I WAS YOU in exchange for an honest review.
When I Was You by Minka Kent was so good! If you're looking to lose yourself in a book right now, this one is a very good choice!
What a great thriller! I loved this one so much that I bought the audible version. This one will leave you thinking what the heck did I just read!
Ok gosh Minka Kent is so good! Like so good! She’s probably in my top 5! When I Was You has me questioning everything! This is brilliant. Brienne was attacked and got a roommate so she wouldn’t be alone in her huge house. Things are for sure off... who is the woman with the same name who dresses like her that she keeps seeing around town? What is going on? Is Brienne even really Brienne? Who knows!!
