I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
I had a hard time with this story. It felt like something I had seen or read before. However, I found the plot interesting with lots of twists and turns. Just when I thought I had the story figured out, I find out that I’m wrong.
The characters were well-developed and the story was clearly plotted. The story was a page-turner and a great vacation read. I only wish it didn’t feel like a movie I had watched on Lifetime.
Eleanor has not had the best life. It's made even harder by that fact that her mom and sister are manipulative and conniving people who think only of themselves. Fortunately, Eleanor is close to her dad and she cherishes their relationship. Unfortunately, her dad is sick and that's bad enough, but Eleanor is thrust into a world that is unrecognizable after learning even more devastating secrets about her family. The story then goes into a whirlwind of revenge, secrets, and more obstacles for Eleanor to overcome.
The book was very entertaining and I finished it very quickly. However, I thought the ending was over the top and a little far fetched. However, it was a fun ride and sometimes that's just what you need in a story.
I did NOT see this ending coming! WOW!
Definitely recommend this one. Thank you for the opportunity!
You gotta love the unreliable lead. You never truly know what’s going to happen.
Eleanor has always been left wanting. Her relationship with her mom sucks, her sister too, and then her dad, the only person she has, dies. His parting gift to her is one name. The name of her true, biological father. Whom she knew nothing about.
Thrown for a loop, Eleanor can’t help but want to find out more. Why didn’t this man choose her? It isn’t fair that he chose only his “real” family and their perfect daughter Victoria. Eleanor becomes obsessed. She wants, no - needs- everything Victoria has. And she’ll stop at almost nothing to get it.
Sister Dear is wonderfully twisted and you will definitely find yourself saying, ‘What the f---...” as it ends. Need a messed up distraction? This is your book.
I received a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Special thanks to Harlequin for providing our copy in exchange for an honest & fair review.
We are big fans of Hannah Mary McKinnon. Unfortunately. this was not my favorite book by Hannah. The twist & turns felt a little pushed. The story is fast-paced & it's a fast read, but this one didn't have the same relatability as her other books we've read.
I love Hannah Mary McKinnon’s books and this is another one that kept me eagerly reading from beginning to end. This is a slow burn psychological thriller that centers around the main character, Eleanor. Eleanor’s father has just died and she has just become aware of a secret about her regarding her family. I empathized with Eleanor as she was already down on her luck and living an isolated and lonely existence before the secret was revealed. It was heartbreaking to see how her mother and sister treated her. Once Eleanor decides to dig deeper into the family secret we start to see a more invigorated Eleanor and she is a person on a mission. As this Is a thriller I don’t want to give too many details away. I will say that this is a book that hooked me in and I was really rooting for Eleanor to find what she was looking for and have some happiness in her life. Did she find it? You will have to see. The twisty ending had me remembering a twisty ending in The Neighbors, another book by this author. Like that book this was an ending I didn’t see coming. I loved the suspense in this book and the great character development of Eleanor. Another well written thriller by this author.
Hannah Mary McKinnon has become one of my favorite authors after reading her book, Her Secret Son, last year. Sister Dear absolutely did not disappoint!!! It lures you in and takes you for a ride, a surprise ending for sure!
3/5 stars. This book was fine. The characters were hard to like and there are a lot of characters in this that are mere diversions. It was kind of a satisfying conclusion, in a way.. Eh.. I'm feeling really lukewarm about this one.
Thank you Mira Books and Netgalley for the free advance copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Sister Dear had a strong start but by the middle the momentum kind of fizzled out. I will give the author credit, because it definitely went in a direction that I wasn’t expecting. But my biggest problem was that the characters all felt very fake and two dimensional, and the ending took a very unrealistic turn. I can often look past a plot being unrealistic for the sake of shock value, but it just didn’t work for me here.
I’m sure other readers will enjoy this one, but I think I’ve been reading too many books with a similar premise lately.
This was my first foray with Hannah Mary McKinnon and I have to say the first few chapters had me thinking twice, but it really got so much better and I ended up really enjoying her twisted mind!
I will not give any of the books details as I believe the reader deserves to enjoy the journey, but I will say some of the characters are truly evil, some have no clue what is happening all around them, some have the best of intentions, and some just want to fill a void.
Sit back, relax, and be prepared to expect the unexpected. One may think they know what is going on than BAM everything they thought they knew was wrong.

YAY!!! Loved this book. I really like Hannah Mary McKinnon's work so I was excited when I received an ARC of Sister Dear. This book delivered all I wanted. I did not see the ending coming at all. This is a great family dynamic thriller and you'll love it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author Hannah Mary McKinnon for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
If you’re looking for a book filled with frustrating dialogue where the main character is constantly cut off, look no further. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a thriller; it’s a drama with maybe 2% being thriller-esque. I’m in the large group of people that hated the ending. Overall this book just was not for me.
I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own.
Difficulty read as there were so many times Elenor makes mistakes. Each of these mistakes gets her deeper and deeper down the wrong path. Maybe it Is because of what is actually going on in the real world I didn’t
enjoy reading a book that was depressing.
YES!!!! I knew this book was going to be amazing!!! I loved Her Secret Son so I was so excited when I received an ARC of Sister Dear and this book was exactly what I had been hoping for. It had a bit of everything, great character development, twisted characters and an ending I couldn’t predicted at all. I love Hannah Mary McKinnon’s writing style, I think she is an incredible author. This family thriller will have you completely committed to finishing this book the same day you start it. High recommend!

I really enjoyed this book! I thought it had a unique plot, and very interesting characters. Especially the protagonist, Eleanor. She had some very deep rooted troubles in her personality that made her very relatable!
A very good read! Especially for summer!
Sister Dear was a great read by Hannah Mary McKinnon. Eleanor was very close to her father and her earth was shattered when he died. But she finds out that the man she thought was her father really isn't. She finds out that her mother had an affair and she was the product of that affair. Eleanor is desperate to uncover this different branch of her family tree. She finds out that she has a half sister who she is envious of. She has everything Eleanor wants; a loving childhood, devoted husband, and luxury home. Eleanor is ready to take all of this back, no matter who it hurts. I really enjoyed this book and didn’t expect all the twists and turns. I cant wait to read more by Hannah Mary McKinnon.
I read a lot of psych thrillers, but this was a unique story line. The story starts with the death of Eleanor's beloved father. She's been estranged from her mother and sister for years. On her father's deathbed she learns of a bombshell and it really knocks her for a loop. She learns her father is not the man who just died, but someone her mother had an affair with, years ago. Eleanor finds out she has a half sister out there too and sets out to get to know her in a very unusual way. Plenty of twists and turns and a bit of surprise at the end. Again, I have not encountered this plot before, so I think you will be shocked as I was.
Eleanor is having a hard time, and she is all alone. She has uncovered family secrets that have made her feel even more alienated and she doesn't know what to do. That is, until she makes a new friend and meets a wonderful man. Suddenly, she has more confidence and is enjoying life in a way she never thought she could. What she doesn't know is that these secrets hide something more sinister than she could ever have imagined.
I enjoyed reading this. It moved fairly quickly from one event to the next, and as Eleanor started getting more involved with her new friends, I just knew there had to be something lying beneath the surface. I enjoyed figuring out what I thought was really going on. At the end, I really felt for Eleanor and her situation, and I'd almost like a sequel to see what happens next!
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
5 stars. Loved it start to finish. AWESOME!
This is the story about Eleanor who has a very close relationship with her father and a very strained relationship with her mother. I immediately connected with Eleanor, and could feel her heartbreak knowing her father is dying. While her father is on his death bed, Eleanor finds out he isn't her biological father. Her devastation was palpable. Having been so close to my own father, I can only imagine what a shock to her system this was. The book follows Eleanor as she comes to grip with knowing she has another family.
I knew this book was a thriller but it started out like an intense family drama, with lots of raw emotions, conflicts, hurt feelings, etc. I really loved that part of the story, it was very well done. The thriller aspect really ramped up in the last quarter of the book. And it was amazing. Jaw dropping, intense, entertaining. I loved every minute. WOW!
This book was a fast easy read, the words seemed to just fly off the page. I devoured every word!
Thank you Harlequin and NetGalley for this digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
I've read all of Hannah's books -- my favorite was The Neighbors -- and then this one came along!! She has a way of getting me so connected with the main character that I find I never forget about them no matter how many books I read. And it's exactly how I felt about this one -- Eleanor.
