Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
I would like to thank NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this ebook.
Music Is My Life by Myles Tanzer is filled with information and facts about artists and bands who have taken the music industry by storm and some of them who will continue doing so in the upcoming years. This will make a great gift for that one music-loving teen or middle grader that you know.
Artists curated by mood! Many of these were familiar to me, but it was great to listen to songs I had not revisited in years as well as to discover new ones.
Music Is My Life has a lot of ways to help you cope with life through music - cry it out, get creative with it, shout about it. Of the artists mentioned in the book, I had seen about 10 of them live, which was pretty cool. There are song examples and facts about them and they are all split by your moods so you can choose your playlist based on how you are feeling. There are some really cool illustrations in this book and all genres and eras of music seem to be included so at least someone you're interested in should be in here!
I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.
"Music Is My Life" takes a creative approach to music appreciation and education by matching musicians to moods and activities. This is a great book for preteens and teenagers.
really great picture book. ideal present for toddlers and young children. Bought it for my little niece. love it.
This book is not what I originally expected, I thought it's a book that recommends songs for different moods, but I realized this book is more about introducing kids to singers (80 of them). Most pages introduce the singer and recommend a few of their famous songs associated with the section titles (moods), while some focus solely on the musician's career history. I want to say it's an interesting book, but couldn't even make myself finish reading to the last page. The hand-drawn illustrations, but I don't think I would want to buy this, or for anyone. Sorry.
I love this book! Every page is like a colourful poster paying homage to a different artist... some you will know and some you might not, some golden oldies and some bang up to date!
It would be impossible to feature all of the greatest artists of all time in a book of any size, but the author here lets us delve through their mixtape collection and pick out some personal favourites.
In fact, each biography comes with a little playlist with a song for every mood from each artist - such as a song for a broken heart, a song for dancing, and a song for crying.
Colour bursts from every page in the gorgeous illustrations. This book is a coffee table essential for modern times and would make any music lover smile. You might just discover some new tunes too!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Love, love, love this book from Wide-Eyed!! Such a genius way to introduce many styles of music based on feeling and thoughts. I absolutely love it and think it is such a great addition to any family's library!
The artwork is really lovely, and the artists featured was a really great selection. I love the idea behind this book!
I love every aspect of this book. The colorful illustrations, musicians and artists to pair with emotions, the write ups. Everything in here is creative and beautiful.
Music can touch you and speak to you and drive you.
I want to binge this whole playlist.
I really liked this book and plan to buy it as a gift for an 11 year old cousin when it comes out. I think this is probably the best age for this book as I feel it's probably not detailed enough for anyone too much older. It contains information about the different artists in a brief, snappy way and the illustrations are great. The range of artists includes is what I like most; there are some well-known ones to keep you interested but still lots more to discover.
What a clever idea for an anthology! The author organizes this book into sections that reflect moods such as "cry it out with, fall in love with, celebrate life with, focus with, dance around with" and more. Each section features artists as, for example, cry it out with Lana Del Rey, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Joni Mitchell and others. There is then information about each artist including biographical facts and suggestions of songs. This book with illustrations of the musicians would make a great gift for an eight year old or above child in your. The suggestions are good for adults too.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this read in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fantastic nonfiction book! The illustrations are attractive and the spread of musicians that were chosen are a fantastic mix of genres and generations. There are lots of modern musicians (Lizzo is included!) as well as classics like David Bowie, Blondie, Prince, etc. Amazon lists the age-range of this book as 8-12, and I think that seems about right. It is a great middle-grade book for kids looking to learn more about music. It also encourages emotional recognition and control by suggesting artists for different moods. I think teens may also enjoy flipping through this book, even though it is written a bit young for them.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This book is a recommendation guide of music to listen to when your going through different emotional stages in your life and gives basic information on songs to listen to by numerous artists.
I would say that this book is aimed at ages between 9-15 as a guide.
This book was good but could have been made more interesting.
I received a free digital ARC through NetGalley. A collected biography of musicians that spans both the new and popular and the older and classic.
Hmmm… This wasn't exactly the book I wanted, nor was it the book I thought to expect. It looked to be a kind of recommendation service, and in splitting musical acts up into what they do – inspire us to be innovative, make us dance, give us solace when we're feeling up against it – it does try its best and attach suggested artists to a specific purpose. The first entry, Lana del Rey, in the 'glumness' section, seemed to forecast a really good, accessible book of musicology for the young, showing how her records work, and what she does with her musical choices to get us to feel certain things. But that was a rare highlight, for elsewhere the writing is just cheese. It might be partly because the 'glumness' has to be got through first, but this was silly hand-holding. "You know, it's alright to feel like you'll never find love, listen to what Adele says about it. Oh, and grow out of it, you're only 9 years old." I paraphrase. "It's always important for you to feel comfortable in your own skin." And I don't paraphrase – that's how the page on Christine and the Queens ends.
So while this book might just win some people over to music they have never heard of before – how many people in the target audience had ever clicked through to Ryuichi Sakamoto on Spotify before now? - the writing didn't really serve to give me what I sought. It's certainly too full of platitudes and stereotypes for me, like the old Smash Hits magazines had been rewritten after some mindfulness and self-activation classes. One and a half stars.
This was an interesting collection but i wish that the art was more consist throughout as some of the artist were done beautifully whilst others looked horrible. The facts and info were interesting but it did feel a little thin when compared to similar collections. This is a fun and quick little read that is a great gift for music fans.
