Less of a thriller and more a slow burn mystery with family drama.
When Ruth shows up at her younger sisters door after years of no contact, Alex knows something is very wrong. The past comes back to haunt them both and they’ll have to face it, whether they like it or not.
Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book in exchange of an honest review.
This book started pretty promising and definitely was intriguing but something about it just felt off to me. I don't know if it was the story itself or maybe the characters. It centers around two sisters and honestly both are so annoying - you don't know who you're rooting for the entire book because they're both the worst. The people around them and in their lives are also completely oblivious and seem alarmingly dumb to everything happening around them.
The plot was a bit predictable and kind of slow but I will say there were some very good detailed descriptions that made me feel skeeved out numerous times so I do applaud some of the writing there.
Overall I don't know, I think I would pass on this one.
Perception.....Alex has a nice home, a great job, a cute boyfriend. So, she must be the honest one. As opposed to Ruth who dated drug dealers, went to jail, ran away from home. Clearly she's the liar. Or is she? I figured this one out partway though, but the book was still entertaining enough to finish. I would have liked one last chapter from Alex though. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for providing me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this title.
This was definitely a wild ride from start to finish! I sat down to read after lunch and the next thing i knew it was time to think about fixing dinner! Definitely recommending this one!
Alex has carefully curated her life, and allowing her wildchild sister Ruth to infiltrate it upends it all. Nay is excellent at obscuring truths and shadowing secrets through constantly shifting family dynamics and hindsight perspective. By the end, dear reader won't know who's who. I received this delectable thriller from the publisher Crooked Lane Books through NetGalley.
Not sure how I feel about this story. It moved slow for me. I didn't feel like this was a suspense/thriller. I more reminded me of drama between two competing siblings.
Alex works in family services, saving children day in and day out, and living with her more reserved boyfriend Chase. She's in the midst of a stressful case when out of nowhere her sister Ruth, that she hasn't seen or heard from in 10 years, shows up at her door, in distress and pregnant. This leaves Alex no choice but to let her, despite their differences and their past. While Alex is at work every day cozying up to Sully, a colleague and police officer, Ruth takes the opportunity to cozy up to Chase, and we end up in a twisted game that the sisters have played against each other their whole lives.
This was a quick and easy read that comes from both sisters viewpoints as they reiterate their pasts and navigate their current situations. It's hard, at times, who to believe, even if you can see the outcome. I thought it was a fun read and enjoyed the way the author played out Chase and Sully's roles as well! It definitely gives a good look at sibling rivalries, as well as the hardest parts of child protective service jobs and I thought the whole thing was well-played.
Thank you to NetGalley, Roz Nay and Crooked Lane Books!
I knew I wanted to read this book after participating in an online Zoom call with author Roz Nay as one of the panelists. The story sounded interesting and I was happy to get a chance to read it from Netgalley.
Alex has escaped her past. She lives with her model/publicist boyfriend Chase in a fancy apartment that she could never afford on her family services salary. She spends her days investigating claims of abuse and neglect against children and separating them from their families if the situation warrants.
Alex is shocked when her sister Ruth shows up out of the blue. The two haven't spoken in about a decade. Chase didn't even know Alex had a sister, so he's even more shocked. So when Ruth knocks on the door - pregnant, jobless, and without a place to live - Alex feels compelled to let her in despite their tumultuous past. Ruth quickly learns that Chase knows virtually nothing about Alex's background, and the sister makes Ruth promise not to reveal anything if she wants to stay with them. Alex tells her boyfriend not to trust Ruth because the woman has spent her entire life lying and making dangerous and impulsive decisions.
The story was entertaining and I'm glad I read it. I didn't give it 5 stars because I saw the ending coming pretty early in the story, but I still enjoyed the ride.
This book is great! Would definitely recommend. Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
LOVED THIS ONE SOO MUCH! Roz you have become an auto buy author for me now.
I lived the relationship between the sisters in this one and I was constantly second guessing myself with Hurry Home! Huge winner for me.
i really enjoyed reading this, I really enjoyed the sibling dynamic of Alexandra and Ruth. I really enjoyed the mystery.
DNF. Thank you NetGalley and Publisher for this early copy! I decided to not keep reading this one, it was not for me. Thanks!
I volunteered to read this book, through netgalley in exchange, for an honest review.
My first read form this author and it certainly won't be my last.
A page Turner of a read and full of suspense. When they think you've got it figured out there's a another twist
Definitely a case of unreliable narrator! Which happen to be my favorite! Alex, who works in child protection services, hasn't spoken to her sister Ruth in years and has no plans to, until Ruth shows up on her doorstep one day out of the blue in trouble. Hesitantly she lets her stay, against her better judgement. This book was fabulous, twists, sharp turns and more secrets you won't see coming by a mile!
Alexandra Van Ness works in child protection and shares a home with her boyfriend, Chase. But then her long-lost sister, Ruth, unexpectedly shows up at her door. Growing up, Ruth was always a troublemaker pulling Alex into her mess. Alex reluctantly agrees to help Ruth under the condition that they will never talk about the past. But when a local child goes missing, they are forced to confront the secrets buried in their past.
I loves the atmosphere the author was able to create. The book had a claustrophobic feel to it, a growing sense of dread. The issue for me was that this was more the story of relationship between two sisters and less of a thriller. Overall, though it was not exactly the type of book I expected still it was a breezy read. I give it 3.5 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher, Crooked Lane Books, for providing me with an ARC of this book.
This book is awesome!!! This was my first book by this author and it will definitely not be my last.
This is the story of two sisters, Alex and Ruth, who have been estranged for many years. Both have secrets that they would prefer stay in the past. I don't want to give much more away and ruin the story for anyone but let me say that I did not see the twist coming at all. I stayed up past my bedtime to finish.
If you're looking for a page turning suspense you must check this book out!
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
A taut, beautifully written story of sisters, motherhood, and the kind of secrets that turn a person into a monster. You won’t know who to trust in this story. Kept me guessing till the end! Great book!
This is a story centered around two sisters who have been estranged from each other and clearly have judged each other based on youthful behavior. They reunite when one sister arrives unexpectedly at the others doorstep. This book is very slow for the first half and I mostly wanted to drop it. It turns out to be better paced and interesting in the second half. I’m not sure I ever really connected with the characters though. It’s a quick read and has some highlights. Good twists in second half.
Thank you for the early copy.
