Kate White concocts a riveting story around a financial journalist’s lost memory and her determination to find out what happened and why. A skillful writer, Ms. White creates realistic characters, a few red herrings, and a formidable pace. Clever and compelling, Have You Seen Me? is hard to put down and then ends with a surprising twist. Kate White is an impressive storyteller.
3 1/2 Stars
This story was interesting. Ally Linden lost two days of her life due to suffering from a dissociative state. She hires a detective agency to help her put together where she was over those two days. She hopes finding this out will help her remember. Many things are going on in Ally's life, any of which could have triggered her. I liked reading about the P.I.'s process of tracking Ally's movements.
Have You Seen Me by Kate White had me turning the pages and staying up late into the night. I was very impressed by how well Ally shared information with those around her. Usually in suspense or thrillers, the main character is hiding things from everyone and very resistant in telling those around her what is going on. And for good reason, since they never know who to trust.
Even though I really enjoyed this book I am only giving it three stars because of how quickly the book ended after we found out what was going on. But if it was only the fast ending I could have overlooked it and would have given Have You Seen Me a higher rating. But combine that with how unbelievable some of the things were that the stalker did, including finding Ally in a huge city and timing it perfectly to try and get her killed by traffic, it was just a bit too unbelievable.
I still recommend it though and look forward to reading future books by Kate White.
I've always liked Kate White's Bailey Weggins suspense novels so of course I liked this one too...
Full of red herrings and a thriller within a thriller, Ally is a great character as she struggles to piece together a past tragedy with present day mystery. Her supporting characters add to the drama but I would have liked a shout out to Bailey as maybe the friend she's working on a true crime novel with..
Just sayin'...
Ally Linden arrives at work, starts her regular routine, just like any normal workday... but it's not. She hasn't worked in the office she is sitting in for a couple of years now, and her former co-workers are looking at her like she has lost her mind, and she has no idea why.
Things aren't adding up, memories are missing, and the last couple days of her life are a complete blur... something is definitely not right.
Have You Seen Me is a riveting story about a woman who has lost her memory and is struggling to make sense of things. She keeps finding little clues that start her on a journey that not only helps to rediscover the two days that she lost, but also helps uncover a tragedy she witnessed in the past. There is a lot going on between the pages of this one, and it is evident someone near and dear to Ally isn't being truthful, and the life she thought she lead isn't all that it appears to be. Hold on tight because this mesmerizing little page-turner will take you on one heck of a ride! Highly recommend!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, via NetGalley request, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.
Kate White has another best-selling thriller in her latest book. Ally Linden has lost her memory of two days of her life. She knows her name, but not much else. A doctor’s diagnosis says she is in a dissociative state. He said this could have been caused by a childhood trauma or a more recent one. Though she has a deep dark secret from her past that she has kept hidden all these years, the bloody tissue she finds in her pocket tells her it is recent. In her desperate attempt to find out what really happened she finds herself knee deep in a life-altering mystery that threatens her life and that of her family.
I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Great story with so many twists and turns! I really loved the characters and how they developed throughout the story. It was an absolute page turner.
Thank you kindly to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for this review copy.
Such a great story with many twists and turns. So many layers to the story. Well developed characters. The story keeps you guessing. Looking forward to being able to suggested it to our patrons.
Kate White has taken an often used amnesia plot and shot a big hole through the middle of it! As the main character realizes that she has a big gap in her memory, she must follow her trail to see what happened. Of course, there are characters that will block her efforts at every step. How and why will be revealed, but it will be a huge surprise.
4.5/5 stars rounded up!
When Ally "wakes up" from a dissociative state in a hospital, she goes on a mission to recover the two days of memory she's missing and what triggered the episode. Armed with only some bloody tissues and a missing phone as her clues, she finds herself in more trouble than she originally thought.
I really appreciated the reliable yet unreliable narrator. Ally was trust-worthy and as well put-together as she possibly could be considering her circumstances. The trip around NYC following her steps was engaging and adventurous. I appreciated how she was honest with the people around her, it was a refreshingly new concept in the thriller genre and made the thriller easier to navigate!
This was my first Kate White novel and Ill definitely be adding some of her former titles to my "to be read" stack!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing an advanced review copy! I wish I hadn't read this back to back with The Split by Sharon Bolton because they did deal with somewhat similar issues although I actually found this novel's dealing with fugue states a bit more believable. It was really enjoyable! Good initial mystery and I liked our main character Ally. There were two main things that brought the rating down to a "just okay" 3 star rating: 1) the dialogue was frequently really unbelievable, just super awkward and drew me out of the story, and 2) the big reveal at the end took a total of one chapter to reveal, settle, and wrap up and it really didn't make a lot of sense to me. It kind of came out of left field and wasn't super believable. It sounds like these things would bring the rating down even more, but the rest of the book was really engaging and quite a page turner! I enjoyed it for the most part! Definitely something to pick up when it's released soon--although maybe don't read this and The Split in quick succesion!
The past couple of days have been a mystery to Ally. She comes to after realizing that she showed up to work at a place she hasn't worked at for 5 years. What has happened the past two days? She is determined to piece together the mystery events. Was it a past event that triggered this episode or a more recent event? She must do all that she can to relive the days to bring the memory back.
What?! I did not see that ending coming. That was a good, fast-paced read. I felt so much worry for Ally as I read through the story. Be sure to read this one.
This was my favorite type of thriller. Kept me on the edge of my seat with a sympathetic character. I enjoy the premise of someone having some type of amnesia especially if it’s subtle. I think it would have been better if the husband character and others had been a little more developed, and the plot line with her brother was less interesting to me including the secondary plot which seemed a little far fetched. All in all it was a great light read that I couldn’t put down.
I always enjoy Kate White's Bailey Weggins series as well as her stand-alones. I find her protagonists very sympathetic. That being said, her latest, Ally Linden is too trusting and easily manipulated. I enjoyed the story of a woman who can't account for her last few days and attempts to discover where and what she might have done amongst misinformation and danger. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read this digital review copy.
This was super suspenseful. I literally started and finished it in one night. From the beginning it has you guessing. I did just watch a murder mystery movie so maybe I was on guard 😀
The whole time I’m guessing “who did it” for all the different pieces. But I was wrong about most everything.
My only downfall with this book is I don’t care for how they ended the story. I wish there had been more closure with the main character, her marriage, job, etc. Other than that, loved it!
Have You Seen Me? is a suspenseful story that will leave you asking what if this happened to me. Kate White writes a compelling story that keeps the reader engaged throughout the book.
I read all of Kate White's Bailey Weggins, so thought I would try her new one. It sucked me in at the beginning and had some twists and turns to make it interesting, but I felt that it just ended. So many authors seem to do that now, it's like they get to 300 pages and end the whole book in 2 pages.
I wish it had been a Bailey Weggins.
Compulsively readable thriller about a woman who shows up at work one day only to find out she hasn’t worked there for five years. When Kate is confronted by her former boss, who is also her former boyfriend she must try to retrace her steps to unravel the mystery. Kate is very confused and upset by this turn of events, especially as she wonders if it has something to do with a horrific crime she stumbled upon when she was only 9 years old. Full of twists and turns, this novel is not to be missed.
I really enjoyed this author's last couple of books. Unfortunately, this one fell somewhere in the middle. I mostly fell flat for me.
My blase feelings with this one are hard to express without giving away spoilers, but I will try my best.
This book wasn't as suspenseful as her other books. I was able to piece many things together pretty easily before they were revealed. The plot and subplots were a little exaggerated and left me feeling disinterested. The twists didn't surprise me.
The ending felt rushed and forced. I wasn't especially happy with it. There was a big attempt at suspense up to the end, then it just ended. I was disappointed.
Overall, this book isn't bad. It just wasn't what I expected to get from this author. I guess we can't always love what every book from every author.
Ally finds out that she’s disassociated after she arrived to work... only to find out she hasn’t worked there in 5 years. She has bloody tissues in her pocket and no recollection of whose blood it is or what happened over the past 2 days. Ally visits with family and works with private investigators and a psychologist to determine what happened 2 days prior resulting in her disassociated state. Readers learn that Ally found a body when she was a child and this may have played a role in her disassociation. Overall, this was an easy read, but definitely not a read I’d recommend or read again in the future. I couldn’t connect to Ally, and the big twist in the story? Nope. Just not thrilled with this one. Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
