Super adorable rom-com about a state attorney Bridget and her intern, Matt, who turns out to be her love interest., and more. The story was charming, funny, and heartfelt. Just remember that, what happens in Vegas, doesn't always stay in Vegas. You get to find out which way Bridget's heart will lead her.

I didn’t connect with Andie J. Christopher’s first book, Not the Girl You Marry, but I love her story ideas and really wanted to give her books another chance: Enter Not that Kind of Guy.
What it's about: This one follows State attorney Bridget Nolan after breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, But with her brother's wedding right around the corner, she needs a date to help avoid running into her ex since he's a part of the wedding party. So when Bridget's legal intern, Matt, also needs a way to get his ex off his back, they decide to help each other out and agree to a fake relationship.
What I loved:
-I really liked Bridget and Matt as individuals. I thought Matt was really sweet and kind and a wonderful love interest. And Bridget was smart, witty and someone you'll want to root for. Together, I thought they had great chemistry and were really great for each other.
What I didn't connect with:
-We didn't read when Matt's feelings for Bridget changed. I don't mind insta-love, but with Bridget and Matt it felt like it was never explained why they felt such an instant connection. We know that his feelings for her happened while he was interning with her, but that entire part of the story isn't shown. (Time jumps from them meeting to the end of his internship, but we're told that he developed the feelings while they were working together.) Not seeing why he developed these strong feelings for Bridget made it hard for me to fully understood where those feelings came from.
-There was just so much plot that, for me, it made it hard to fully get on board and root for their relationship. It just felt like there was constantly something happening that distracted from their love story.
Rating 2.8-3/5 stars
I was really excited to read this book because I love the "office romance" trope, but it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. The story itself is cute, but I couldn't really get into the writing style. That being said, this has more to do with my preferences as a reader than anything else. In other words, I can be picky in my reading preferences but I want to acknowledge that simply because I didn't enjoy a specific book, it doesn't mean others will feel the same and that I won't recommend it. I think NOT THAT KIND OF GUY is a great starting point if you're looking to get into the romance genre but don't know where to start. It reads easily and balances many beloved romance tropes that I will never tire of reading.
This book just had too many storylines going on, and as it continued more were added that it was hard to keep track. Boss/intern, rich guy saving the day, fake date to a wedding, etc. Despite so much going on, it was still quite predictable. It was hard to finish. Not the Girl you Marry also had some of these problems, but I had a harder time with this one for some reason.
Fun, charming, adorable romcom novel with just the right amount of steam and great chemistry. Enjoyed this even more than the author's first novel. This was the perfect swoony escape.
A romcom that brings to mind the movie The Proposal, this book starts off very quickly where law student Matt Kido interns at a state's attorneys office in Chicago for the driven and incredibly smart Bridget Nolan. Sparks fly but nothing happens until Kido's intership is over and Nolan asks him to be a plus one on a family/ bachelorette trip to Vegas. For people who like Pride and Prejudice, modern storytelling and strong female characters!
I love a good rom-com so I was really excited to pick this one up. It was cute and entertaining! It held my attention but I don’t know that it will be too memorable down the road. It was a fun read and I’d recommend it if you like light and fun rom-coms! Thank you netgalley for sending a free copy.
A fun sequel! Enjoyed the new protagonist and the surprise way it stayed on theme with the first book's how-to-lose-a-guy relationship challenge.
Absolutely loved this book and the story. It reminded me so much of The Proposal and I loved that film. Already provided a review here: https://atthecooltable.com/giveaway-not-that-kind-of-guy-by-andie-j-christopher-is-your-next-quarantine-and-read/.
I was sadly let down by this novel through no fault of it's own. I honestly just think I don't connect well with the author's writing style.
The story was cute as well as the romance but I just didn't feel connected to it.
Bridget Nolan has her life together. Except when it comes to romance. After breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, Chris, she’s been reluctant to get back on the boyfriend horse.
Enter her new intern. As a successful State attorney, she’s no stranger to interns but they aren’t usually like Matt Kido. Scion of a wealthy well-connected family, Matt was set to spend his summer interning at a high powered firm alongside his girlfriend. Until he came home and found her cheating on him. Unable to face a summer working with his ex, he joins Bridget’s office where it’s love at first sight. At least for him.
At the end of the internship though, all bets are off. Bridget isn’t his boss any longer. And she needs a date to the bachelor/bachelorette party. In Las Vegas. Where Chris the ex will be along with his flavor of the month.
This is a sweet and sexy, falling for the boss, what happens in Vegas doesn’t stay in Vegas romance.
I liked this one! The coworkers to lovers trope was done well and I liked the heroine quite a bit. I liked the families as well.
I don't usually read a lot of romances, but something drew me to this book. In the end, it feels like a mash-up of every got-married-in-vegas and hooking-up-with-the-boss movie you've ever seen, and not in a bad way! But it does feel like maybe this also should have been a movie. There were a few dangling plot lines that felt totally unnecessary, sort of like the author was placing them there only to introduce the character for future books.
A fantastic follow-up to NOT THE GIRL YOU MARRY, NOT THAT KIND OF GUY is another sharp contemporary romance from Andie J. Christopher. Christopher continues to be one of those writers whose style either really does or absolutely doesn't work for readers, so be sure to take a scroll through a sample before you pick up a copy. Our female lead is Bridget Nolan, the sister to our hero in book one, Not the Girl You Marry, and our male lead is the wealthy intern who falls head over heels for her at first sight. Add in a desperate need for a bachelorette/bachelor party trip date and what happens in Vegas is definitely not staying in Vegas.
This was a cute little rom com of a book. Very predictable but fine. I had a hard time figuring out who was who in his family for a while. I couldn't figure out why her brothers were still so hung up on her exboyfriend, but I guess without it the whole book couldn't have happened. The ending was a little far fetched but was expected.
Again, totally underwhelmed! Before reading my review of Not That Kind of Guy, I’m going to highly recommend returning to my review of Not the Girl You Marry to see where I’m coming from on this, because I’m going to kind of base my feelings off of that (and if you didn’t read Not the Girl You Marry, you’re not missing anything).
Bridget Nolan has a past riddled with reasons not to get involved with a guy, ever again. Her ex royally screwed her up for love, and her mom abandoned her family when she was just 13. So she’s not looking to like Matt, the rich heir of billions who’s interning for her at the Special Prosecutions Bureau.
Matt, in contrast, is immediately swept away by Bridget’s looks, stubbornness, and whip-smart attitude. Though he, too, recognizes this relationship is a bad idea, he can’t stop himself once his internship ends – and things go horribly wrong, and what happens in Vegas did not stay in Vegas.
What I will say for Not That Kind of Guy is that it is a major improvement over Not the Girl You Marry. I reread my review before writing down my thoughts on this novel, and I can say that I definitely believe this novel came out better. But like, not much better. Christopher doesn’t do much better at tackling the “insta-love” problem – Bridget and Matt’s “attraction” is forced and uncomfortable, again. “Sparks” do nothing for me if I can’t see the real reason for attraction. For what we know about Bridget at the beginning, her desire for Matt makes little to no sense. Matt’s feelings for Bridget make only slightly more sense, in her being extremely similar to his (actually terrible) mom, which, you know, speaks for itself… However, I will say that it’s clear Bridget and Matt are more compatible than Hannah and Jack. Hannah and Jack take the stage in this book, too, for brief moments here and there, and they actually fit together better as supporting characters than they did in their own stories. Like, where was that magic when I was drudging through all 320 pages of Not the Girl You Marry?!
Christopher, again, failed to move the plot along quickly. The drama is sooooo drawnnnnn outtttttt that she loses me! Quickly! And it took me a week to make my way through this book. Her characters review the same problems again and again, turning them over for the reader repeatedly yet never making progress towards changing themselves, or towards the climax of the story. I honestly believe nothing came to a head until about 90% of the book was behind me (sorry, I read on Kindle here…). For a romance, I really think that’s a drag for the reader. Christopher’s romantic scenes also fall flat, so there’s nothing to carry you from point A to point B, and it gets boring fast.
I think it’s time to take a break from Christopher’s novels. Not to say I won’t return to them later, but I need her to work out the very evident kinks in the storytelling happening here. I think I’ll sit back and see what other reviewers are saying next time she releases a book!
So unfortunately, again, skip Not That Kind of Guy. Just not worth your time. I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, and it was published April 14, 2020.
Not That Kind of Guy by Andie J. Christopher brings us Bridget Nolan, the sister to our hero in book one, Not the Girl You Marry.
Bridget is a lawyer who works for the state's attorney office. She's recently broken up from her long time boyfriend and has no interest venturing back onto the dating scene. Matt becomes her intern for the summer. He's flirtatious and charming. There's an undeniable attraction between Matt and Bridget. He likes her but he knows it won't go anywhere; however, that doesn't stop him from trying.
Once the internship is over they decide to become friends. Bridget invites Matt to come with her to Vegas for Jack and Hannah's (book one's couple) bachelor/bachelorette party and... What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas as one drunken night with Matt ends up in wedding bells.
I really liked the premise of the book and how Andie unfolds the plot. This book would have been 3 stars if it weren't for the 80% mark when I reached THE moment and everything went down hill drastically. The whole 'Matt loves her then thinks she's after his money' thing was just unnecessary drama. At that point, the appeal of Matt was lost in my eyes and there was no redeeming him.
Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the way the author has connected this series thus far and how she reunited me with some beloved characters from book one. Initially, I was super excited to dive into this book, but sadly I was let down. Maybe my hopes were too high. Or maybe this author just isn't for me. Regardless, she is still very much talented; it's evident in her writing style, so I suggest you take a chance on her storytelling before coming to conclusions based on solely on reviews.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Berkley Romance through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.*
Cute enough Romance. I’ll definitely recommend it in store. Honestly though, I never really felt the chemistry between the two main characters and the love scenes were kind of bland. I felt that some of the side characters were more interesting than the two main ones.
I loved Andie J. Christopher's Not the Girl you Marry, and I really enjoyed this one too. I liked the way that Christopher played with various dynamics - power dynamics of Bridget as Matt's mentor/boss during his internship at the State Attorney's office as well as Matt's status as the super rich, super privileged, but kind of meandering law student from a prominent family. I liked seeing Jack and Hannah from Not the Girl You Marry, but I also liked that they were a huge force in this story and it really got to be its own. This was sort of a cross between a workplace rom com and an enemies to lovers rom com, and I think that Christopher has a knack for making her readers care about the characters she creates.
Not That Kind of Guy by Andie Christopher is a fun lighthearted romance with a realistic look at what a millennial dream romantic encounter would include!
Bridget is a hard-working lawyer who helps those who are not able to help themselves, she struggles with student loan debt, and a failed relationship with someone she didn’t love but held on to for security and to not turn out like her parents.
This is becoming a classic millennial tale! Overworked & underpaid for a job you love, in debt for pursuing an advanced degree, and trying desperately to not make the same mistakes as your parents.
In swoops Matt! A wealthy, kind, younger, and gorgeous man who somehow understands all of Bridget’s struggles without any real judgement. He sweeps her off her feet with his personality, and then solidifies it by providing for Bridget in an emotional (and financial way).
This was a sweet romance with a lot of twists and turns leaving you unsure about a happy ending. Plus, it exemplifies a millennials true happy ending, (spoilers) their student date being paid off!
3/5 stars.
